On episode 414 of Soccer Today we review our preferred U.S. starting lineup for the upcoming Gold Cup; ProSoccerUSA's Arman Kafai joins us for that one. We also review Saturday's Champions League triumph for Liverpool and we talk more generally about finals in soccer.
It's getting close now. But before the build-up to Saturday's Champions League final really kicks in, we've taken the chance to step back and reflect for our latest podcast on the Blood Red channel - on how Jurgen Klopp's superb side have made it to Madrid. And who better to do that than our Liverpool FC correspondent James Pearce? He has been with the Reds every step of the way to the Wanda Metropolitano and he joins Paul Wheelock in the ECHO studio to tell the inside story of what, for the second season running, has been a campaign to remember in the number one club competition in European football. From Roberto Firmino's last-gasp winner versus Paris Saint-Germain, to the hell of Red Star Belgrade, and to the night that Alisson Becker underlined why he has made the crucial difference, James recounts how Liverpool made it through a very difficult group stage before putting Bayern Munich and Porto to the sword in the opening knock-out rounds. Understandably, a large part of the podcast is dedicated to the astonishing semi-final second-leg success over Barcelona, which James believes proved the power of Anfield is real and which he calls the greatest night of his eight-and-a-half-years reporting on the Reds. Which, of course, could be surpassed if Number Six is achieved this weekend. Fingers crossed - and enjoy! For information regarding your data privacy, visit acast.com/privacy

Host and Liverpool reporter Ian Doyle is joined by full-time Liverpool correspondent James Pearce and their former colleague Neil Jones – now of Goal – for a special Blood Red podcast recorded in the NSC Olimpiyskiy, the venue for Saturday's Champions League final between the Reds and Real Madrid. The trio discuss what once could have been regarded as a weakness of Jurgen Klopp is now rightly seen as a strength - and whether Emre Can could be the 2018 Vladimir Smicer.Neil then leaves to meet up with another former ECHO favourite - Andy Kelly, who is very confident, if his betting is anything to go by - before we hear the latest odds from our sponsors, Paddy Power. The podcast resumes with Ian and James debating why Zinedine Zidane is wrong to state that the pressure is split equally on both sides, the way Liverpool supporters have been treated in the lead up to the final, and the special bonds that could carry the Reds to their sixth European Cup.It's a brilliant listen.
