In this episode we start with some Club World Cup chat before turning our attention to the Champions League final at the weekend. PSG were worthy winners and play exciting football, but can you separate that from the money, and is there so much going on in football to obscure that conversation? Then there's discussion of Joan Garcia and how Arsenal solve the number 2 goalkeeper issue this summer, before we take questions on adding a creative midfielder to the squad this summer, the big striker choice and how important it is for Mikel Arteta and Andrea Berta to get right, Edu's apparent influence at Nottingham Forest, signing younger players, and lots more.Get extra bonus content and help support Arseblog by becoming an Arseblog Member on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/arseblog Hosted on Acast. Send us a textThis week's episode is packed with drama, disappointment, and a little bit of silverware (finally). We kick things off with STL City's 0-1 loss to Colorado—yes, we're now the third-worst team in MLS, and no, we haven't won a league game since March 15th. Meanwhile, United's corner of the podcast has officially been renamed: “No European Football Corner.”In the Premier League, Chelsea beat Forest 1-0 in a sloppy but dominant performance. The energy was there, the vibes were immaculate, and Champions League football is back. And yes, if Chelsea win the Conference League, we're saying it: better season than Arsenal. Elsewhere, United beat Villa 2-0—though some say Villa were robbed—and Everton stunned Newcastle 1-0.We wrap with a look ahead to the Champions League Final on Saturday: PSG vs Inter—we've got predictions, hot takes, and maybe a few jabs. Plus, the Conference League Final is set: Chelsea vs Real Betis. Can the Blues end the season with a trophy?Tune in for all the chaos, celebration, and classic footy banter! As we finished this episode, the news dropped that St. Louis City SC has released Head Coach Olof Mellberg and current City 2 Head Coach David Critchley will assume first team manager responsibilities..... its almost like we called it. We're in Bilbao this week, and it's got us thinking. How does a football club that refuses to sign non-Basque players manage to qualify for the Champions League, raking in close to €100 million from TV rights, match days, and UEFA money, while Dublin's best bet is a few fivers from the Conference League? The answer is in economics. The Basques were Europe's forgotten industrialists, the only region in Spain to undergo a full-blown Industrial Revolution, powered by local iron ore, steel production, and a shipbuilding boom that made Bilbao Spain's biggest port by 1900. Then they lost it all. Globalisation, China, and the EU opened the floodgates. Unlike post-industrial towns in the UK or Ireland, Bilbao didn't roll over. They moved the port. They built the Guggenheim. They chose ambition. And they proved that even a small, isolated, ancient people, who speak a pre-Ice Age language with no known relatives, can build a modern economy with global reach. What's our excuse? Join the gang! https://plus.acast.com/s/the-david-mcwilliams-podcast. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

The season is over, the dust is settling and it's a busy podcast as Niall and Marley digest it all. Chelsea won the champions league shootout at the City Ground, although Gary Neville wasn't there to see it, as Levi Colwill's goal proved the difference to send the Blues into Europe's premier competition. In 1992, European football was at a turning point. The European Cup was going to be replaced with a new format: The Champions League. European football's governing body, Uefa wanted a classical theme to accompany the new competition, in an attempt to try and fix the image of football which was mired by hooliganism at the time. Tony Britten was the man tasked with writing such a piece of music. He tells Tim O'Callaghan how he did it. Eye-witness accounts brought to life by archive. Witness History is for those fascinated by the past. We take you to the events that have shaped our world through the eyes of the people who were there. For nine minutes every day, we take you back in time and all over the world, to examine wars, coups, scientific discoveries, cultural moments and much more. Recent episodes explore everything from football in Brazil, the history of the ‘Indian Titanic' and the invention of air fryers, to Public Enemy's Fight The Power, subway art and the political crisis in Georgia. We look at the lives of some of the most famous leaders, artists, scientists and personalities in history, including: visionary architect Antoni Gaudi and the design of the Sagrada Familia; Michael Jordan and his bespoke Nike trainers; Princess Diana at the Taj Mahal; and Görel Hanser, manager of legendary Swedish pop band Abba on the influence they've had on the music industry. You can learn all about fascinating and surprising stories, such as the time an Iraqi journalist hurled his shoes at the President of the United States in protest of America's occupation of Iraq; the creation of the Hollywood commercial that changed advertising forever; and the ascent of the first Aboriginal MP.(Photo: Tony in his studio.
