What a way to close out 2021 Gritty Genius podcast series with none other than my former high school soccer teammate, badass Latina and marathoner, Elizabeth “E” Sanchez. In this episode, E and I chop it up about how soccer was a catalyst for empowering our identity and smashing gender roles. We talk about owning our voice and representing in spaces where there are, still, too few women have a voice. We bring to light that in the sport of running, and marathoning, there is a need to smash the “thin ideal” body type and embrace all (our) body types. E shares that her career journey is deeply rooted in her desire to create consciousness shift and help create a more empowered narrative for others. Bio: Elizabeth Sanchez grew up in Adrian, Michigan, but has been at home in Chicago for the past 17 years, raising her family of three kiddos with her husband while working in sports communications. Her first love is soccer, and she was in the Communications Department at the U.S. Soccer Federation for 15 years, serving as an interpreter, youth national team press officer, media operations officer and overall jackie of all trades. She was one of two venue press officers to manage four matches in the historic Copa America Centenario, where she oversaw three group matches (Lio Messi hat-trick, anyone?) and a semifinal at Soldier Field in 2016. In 2019, she transitioned from the international game to the Chicago Fire Football Club, where she was also hyped into signing up for the Chicago Fire Foundation's Chicago Marathon team. Despite being on the cross country team for two years in high school, she would never ever have called herself a runner, but now, 21 years, three kids and one marathon later, she thinks she just might be. I spent the weekend with the American Outlaws for the US Women’s National Team game against the Netherlands at the Georgia Dome. This was a great opportunity to learn more about the organization while taking in my first US Women’s National Team game. Saturday night I hit Night Before event at RiRa, the official bar for American Outlaws Atlanta. Then Sunday I braved the rain for the AO Tailgate before heading into the match, which the USWNT won 3-1. Rocky Mountain Cup clash, and plenty more.   In the second segment, Red Bull's captain Dax McCarty joins the show to talk about city living, New York’s slow start and the pre-training huddle that makes the squad feel like a family. From his favorite NYC brunch spots to his improv skills, you won’t want to miss this one with the always charming McCarty.   The mailbag begins with a letter written on behalf of Calen Carr's permanent ETR status, the guys talk Copa America Centenario rosters, Jurgen Klinsmann's book gets the green light for ETR Book Club treatment, and a LA Galaxy fan in Italy asks for help.

Forget Detroit Rock City. How about Detroit Soccer City? Fresh expansion news took the guys by surprise, but with they dive in with both feet to beak down the current pecking order. Midweek action produced three 1-1 draws, one of which prompted Matt to label one team’s playoff chances kaput. In general, slow starts are difficult to overcome in MLS, and a handful of 2015 playoffs teams are already in trouble. Toronto FC aren’t in that group as an epic road trip comes to a close. Neither is FC Dallas, or the LA Galaxy, where Ashley Cole is forcing some folks to eat some crow. In the second segment, Seattle Sounders director of performance and sports science Dave Tenney joins Andrew and Ben to explain what his team does to get the most out of their players, their efforts to prevent injury and why sleep and hamstring strength are crucial for athletes.  The mailbag begins with the Armchair Analyst’s take on the decisions Jurgen Klinsmann must make to narrow down a 40-man preliminary roster for Copa America Centenario, then the guys discuss the incessant beeping in Andrew’s apartment, Lord Bendtner’s MLS ambitions and the idea of former players becoming MLS referees.

The first midweek action of the year meant less sleep but more MLS, and that’s just fine. Things aren’t “fine” for last year’s powers, however. The table is upside down, at least compared to 2015, and Andrew, Matt, and David break down the surprising Wednesdaynight results then look ahead to the weekend. With Colorado riding high, how will the upcoming addition of Jermaine Jones affect their playoff chances? Will he be more impactful than Didier Drogba, who could come back this weekend for Montreal? The guys also talk SkyCam in KC, the wonderful life of Chris Wondolowski and the imminent departure time of the Tommy Thompson hype train.   In the second segment, Sporting KC's midfield duo of Roger Espinoza and Jordi Quintilla stop by the studio on the heels of a Justin Bieber concert.
