Journalist Evan Ratliff joins Belz to talk about his fascinating new podcast, Shell Game, which has some poignant USMNT-related moments in it. He also expresses his affinity for 2011 Brek Shea, talks about going incognito to a WC qualifier in Salt Lake City when he was doing the famous WIRED vanishing act, and explains how he thinks the USMNT is in need of a couple Clint Mathis or Jermaine Jones-style characters. Here's the Grant Wahl story he referenced: https://grantwahl.substack.com/p/on-the-doorstep-to-doha?r=1ggkr&utm_campaign=post&utm_source=On%20the%20Doorstep%20to%20Doha&utm_medium=iosAnd here's the link to Shell Game, which I do recommend: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/shell-game/id1753117762 Subscribe to Scuffed on Patreon! Few people truly understand the life that Grant Wahl lived as a soccer writer in America. Gabriele Marcotti not only followed a similar trajectory, but also became close friends with Wahl as he pursued a similar career path. Marcotti, now a senior writer for ESPN and regular contributor on ESPN FC, regularly sat in the same press boxes as Wahl covering World Cups and more. He joined Founding Futbol to talk about what made Wahl such a great journalist. Marcotti gives his perspective on how Wahl contributed to soccer's growth in America and also talks about their friendship. He even recounts why his family considered Wahl the ideal house guest. Founding Futbol is a year-long exploration of the critical moments that have led to soccer's emerging popularity in America. Few individuals have impacted the growth of soccer in America more than Grant Wahl. What makes his influence even more incredible is that he was neither a coach nor a player. He wasn't even an executive. Instead, Wahl is the single most prolific writer to cover the game for the most important sports publication -- Sports Illustrated -- at a time when the building blocks of soccer's popularity were being put in place. From the time he joined SI in the late 90s until his tragic passing in 2002, Wahl became a trusted voice for stories surrounding soccer globally and its evolution domestically as well. In a new book, "World Class," editors Alexander Wolff and Mark Mravic curate his best work and provide insight as to how his journalist genius helps advance the craft and the sport of soccer in America. A long time colleague of Wahl's at SI, Wolff joined Founding Futbol to share memories of his friend, discuss how they approached editing the book and so much more. Steve and Mike cover a lot of ground. Mike just got back from a Next Up Coaching Summit where he saw Mike Tomlin speak on minority hiring in coaching and upward mobility; then Mike was involved in the new Grant Wahl book which was published on Tuesday called World Class. Then they talk Caitlin Clark and the WNBA and the House v. NCAA case.
Grant Wahl seems to touch everybody he came in contact with his undeniable passion, integrity, honesty, and simple ethic of trying to write the truth without agenda or bias. Friends and accomplished journalists Grayle Howlett and Alexander Wolf both spent years writing for Sports Illustrated, Wolff having spent 36 years there covering basketball, the Olympics, soccer's World Cup, the World Series, every Grand Slam tennis event, and the Tour de France. Both men share their glowing admiration and praise for Grant Wahl and explain how this book celebrating his talents, unique writing style, and universal appeal came about. They join Kevin and Dave to discuss his impact on the game and explore how he crafted insightful articles that resonated with fans worldwide. In 2019, he launched his Substack, “Fútbol with Grant Wahl,” which became a must-read for anyone passionate about the beautiful game. The remarkable new book: “World Class: Purpose, Passion, and the Pursuit of Greatness On and Off the Field,” which Wolff co-edited with Mark Mravic, features Wahl's most memorable pieces, from in-depth player profiles to gripping World Cup coverage. It's a journey through the heart of soccer, capturing the drama, the triumphs, and the human stories that make this sport so captivating.
World Cup 2022 was a bizarre story that began in 2010, over a decade before the tournament even kicked off. It was (still is we suppose) a story centered on corruption, human rights, and a gaudy display of power and wealth. It was also a bizarre experience on the ground, for fans, journalists, and even the teams playing (probably). It was made even more bizarre for American fans, and in particular fans, friends, and family of journalist Grant Wahl after Grant collapsed in the press box of the Argentina/Netherlands quarterfinal, and was later pronounced dead at Hamad General Hospital. Anyone who knew Grant, or at least his journalism, knows that he was a special human. He was an advocate, and before his death was famously detained outside Al Bayt Stadium early on at World Cup 2022 for wearing a rainbow on his t-shirt. But Grant wasn't the only person who experienced this. In today's episode, we hear from Brian Davis, a fellow footy traveler who had met Grant through US Soccer circles, and who had a similar experience in Qatar. Four Americans will fight another day in the UEFA Champions League following this week's nail-biting group stage finale. Jimmy Conrad, Charlie Davies and Jesse Marsch analyze Christian Pulisic and Yunus Musah's performances as AC Milan had to settle for a Europa League berth (03:01), and discuss Gio Reyna's minor role at Dortmund (14:35). PSV are flying high on all fronts, so how can the USMNT make the most of Sergiño Dest, Malik Tillman and Ricardo Pepi (20:55)? The crew react to the CONCACAF Champions Cup draw (29:04) and discuss MLS's byzantine roster rules following Don Garber's confirmation that no fourth DP spot is coming (41:25). Then, a look ahead to a weekend of must-watch games from an Americans Abroad standpoint with Yedi Robinson and Tim Ream traveling to Newcastle (54:57) while Weston McKennie and Juventus aim to move into top spot in Serie A (59:56). And with The Billion Dollar Goal now streaming on Paramount+, the guys pay homage to the late, great Grant Wahl (64:34).
