December 11th, 1934. Bill Wilson is on the subway, working his way through his third beer, heading to Towns Hospital. He isn't injured, and he isn't what would be traditionally classified as “sick.” But he knows he has a problem. And he needs help. What he doesn't know as he arrives at the hospital – with a fourth bottle of beer in his hand – is that this will be the last sip of alcohol of his life. And when he's discharged from Towns, he won't be returning. Instead, he'll go on to start the most successful alcohol treatment program in history. How did Bill W. finally kick his addiction to alcohol? And how did his journey toward sobriety lead to the creation of Alcoholics Anonymous? In this episode Fr. Bill's guest Dr. Ian McCabe explores Bill Wilson's spiritual experience in Towns Hospital as well as Bill's prior spiritual encounters that Bill often referred to as an experience of “the Presence.” The discussion sheds clarity on the goal of recovery which is not the elimination of EGO but bringing the EGO into RIGHT RELATIONSHIP with the GREATER SELF. Show Notes: Carl Jung and Alcoholics Anonymous by Ian McCabe Bill W: My First 40 Years “When (Roman Emperor) Marcus Aurelius gazed upon a bottle of the exquisite Falernian wine, therefore, he would remind himself that it was merely fermented grape juice, and that the fine meat dishes set before him were just the corpses of fish, birds, and pigs…” (Meditations, 6.13). --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/fatherbillw/support
Bill W works the steps and has a spiritual experience ….
Several “mini-white light” experiences preceded Wilson’s famous “hot-flash” in Towns Hospital. Largely unknown to most in recovery, Fr. Bill shares Wilson’s spiritual encounters within the broader context of Bill’s spiritual journey.
This is part 2 of 2 of a bit of AA history but it may not be for everyone, so if you are feeling the need for a speaker meeting pick something else from our list. This is an H & I Conference, that features some significant figures in AA's history, John, Col. Edward Towns (as in Towns Hospital) and Sr. Ignatia in part 1. In part 2 we have AA founder Bill W, Dr. Bradley and Dr. Brightman. Part 2 of 2 I could not find out too much about the event itself so if you know more about it please reach out.
