Relentless drive isn't the problem for most high performers. The real breakdown happens when self-belief collapses after early success and hustle turns into motion without direction. This episode is part of The Best of Habits & Hustle, a series where we revisit some of the most impactful conversations we've shared. In this one, I'm joined by Rob Dyrdek to challenge the idea that working harder fixes everything and explore why success stalls when it isn't intentionally designed.  We also talk about rebuilding belief after hitting bottom, mastering time as a strategic advantage, and designing systems that create real wealth without burning your life down. Rob Dyrdek is a serial entrepreneur, producer, and former professional skateboarder. He is the creator of Ridiculousness and the founder of Dyrdek Machine, a venture studio that has built 18 brands with six exits totaling over $550M. Rob is also the CEO of Existence and the mind behind Time Creationism, a framework focused on engineering time at scale. What We Discuss: (00:02) Losing self-belief after early success and why hustle stops working (11:38) How subconscious belief shapes trajectory more than effort (13:27) Hitting rock bottom and the decision to reprogram belief (19:18) Why self-belief isn't motivation, it's data and mastery (46:41) Designing time as a strategic asset instead of reacting to life (52:03) Why balance must come before scale, not after (56:47) Building systems that create wealth without burning your life down Thank you to our sponsors: Prolon: Get 30% off sitewide plus a $40 bonus gift when you subscribe to their 5-Day Program! How can we use our mindfulness practice to understand the internal and external forces influencing our patterns of behavior, and use our dharma practice to create more gaps of genuine awareness, gaps in which our intention and agency create a space for right action, or at least not doing exactly what the seemingly almighty algorithm wants us to do? What if the deepest human drive isn't happiness, survival, or even love, but the need to matter? Philosopher and MacArthur Fellow Rebecca Newberger Goldstein joins Michael Shermer to discuss The Mattering Instinct, her argument that the desire to feel significant lies at the core of human behavior. That drive helps explain our greatest achievements, from creativity and moral courage to scientific and artistic excellence. It also helps explain some of our darkest outcomes, including extremism, violence, and ideological fanaticism. Goldstein examines why people will give up comfort, status, and sometimes even their own lives to feel that they matter. She questions why meaning cannot be captured by happiness metrics or self-help formulas, and why the same psychological force can produce saints, scientists, athletes, cult leaders, and terrorists. The conversation moves through free will, entropy, morality without God, fame, narcissism, and the crucial difference between ways of mattering that create order and those that leave damage behind. Rebecca Newberger Goldstein is an award-winning philosopher, writer, and public intellectual. She is the author of ten books of acclaimed fiction and non-fiction, including 36 Arguments for the Existence of God: A Work of Fiction and Betraying Spinoza: The Renegade Jew Who Gave Us Modernity. She holds a PhD in philosophy of science from Princeton University and has taught at Yale, Columbia, NYU, Dartmouth, and Harvard. A fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, her work has been supported by the MacArthur "Genius" grant and fellowships from the Guggenheim, Whiting Institute, Radcliffe Institute, and the National Science Foundation. Why I'm Not Happy Yet — The Power of Presence | Makes Sense with Dr. JC Why do so many people feel unhappy even while doing everything “right”—setting goals, visualizing the future, and chasing improvement? In this episode of Makes Sense with Dr. JC, Dr. JC explores the overlooked downside of personal growth culture: living for a better future while unconsciously rejecting the present moment. Through philosophical reflection, lived experience, and insights inspired by thinkers like Alan Watts, this episode reframes happiness, mindfulness, and presence. Rather than something you practice, control, or discipline yourself into, presence emerges naturally through awareness, wonder, and awe at the simple fact that you exist at all. This conversation dives into themes of mindfulness, awareness, consciousness, overthinking, fear, urgency, nature, and the illusion of separation—revealing why happiness is never found “later,” but only noticed now. If you've ever asked yourself, “Why am I still not happy yet?” this episode offers a perspective that may quietly change how you experience your life. How We've 'Drugified' Our Entire Existence: Dopamine & Addiction In the Digital Age with Anna Lembke

The Great Simplification with Nate Hagens

Dopamine: the most famous neurotransmitter that regulates pleasure, motivation, and (perhaps most importantly) addiction. When examining  why our society is hooked on consuming more and more of everything – food, clothes, videos, news, vacations – it's imperative to look at how our modern environments hijack our brain's dopamine, sending it into overdrive at nearly every turn. Could taking a closer look at how our societal norms make us more vulnerable to addiction help us transition to more balanced and mindful lifestyles? In this episode, Nate is joined by New York Times bestselling author and professor of psychiatry,  Anna Lembke, to explore how modern society has "drugified" our lived experience through digital media, processed foods, and instant gratification, resulting in an environment that propagates addiction. She explains how dopamine works as our brain's reward signal and why our ancient wiring is mismatched for today's level of high-dopamine stimuli in everyday life – leading to tolerance, withdrawal, and even anhedonia. Ultimately, Anna emphasizes that addiction is not a personal failing but a predictable response to an environment designed to take advantage of our brain's neurochemistry. What are the key practices individuals can use to reduce their addictive tendencies, even as our culture continues to prioritize quick dopamine hits and consumption? How long does it take to see the positive effects after moving away from the stimulus related to our addictive behavior? Lastly, if we acknowledge that information alone isn't enough, what cultural shifts can we make to foster more connection, digital mindfulness, and authenticity, in order to return to a slower, lower throughput way of living? (Conversation recorded on November 18th, 2025)     About Anna Lembke: Anna Lembke is professor of psychiatry at Stanford University School of Medicine and chief of the Stanford Addiction Medicine Dual Diagnosis Clinic. As a clinician scholar, she has published more than a hundred peer-reviewed papers, book chapters, and commentaries. She sits on the board of several state and national addiction-focused organizations, has testified before various committees in the United States House of Representatives and Senate, and maintains a thriving clinical practice. In 2016, she published Drug Dealer, MD – How Doctors Were Duped, Patients Got Hooked, and Why It's So Hard to Stop, which was highlighted in the New York Times as one of the top five books to read to understand the opioid epidemic. Dr. Lembke also appeared on the Netflix documentary The Social Dilemma, an unvarnished look at the impact of social media on our lives.  Her most recent book, Dopamine Nation: Finding Balance in the Age of Indulgence, explores how to moderate compulsive overconsumption in a dopamine-overloaded world and is a New York Times Bestseller.   Show Notes and More Watch this video episode on YouTube   Want to learn the broad overview of The Great Simplification in 30 minutes?   In this episode, we're joined by Oxford-trained philosopher and author Chris Carter to explore one of humanity's most enduring and controversial questions: Is there evidence of life after death? Drawing from his latest book, The Case for the Afterlife: Evidence of Life After Death, Carter argues that the survival of consciousness can be established beyond reasonable doubt through empirical evidence rather than faith alone. Our conversation ranges across research from the British and American Societies for Psychical Research, compelling cases of reincarnation involving children who remember previous lives, accounts of after-death communication, and examples of terminal lucidity. Along the way, we examine the philosophical distinction between reasonable and conceivable doubt, address the strongest skeptical objections, and consider the practical and existential implications of believing that consciousness continues beyond physical death. Hello to you, Marilyn, listening in Hancock, New Hampshire!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington, this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds (and a bit more) for Wednesdays on Whidbey—this final day of the old year—and your host, Diane Wyzga.      Shoveling Snow With Buddha by Billy Collins"In the usual iconography of the temple or the local Wokyou would never see him doing such a thing, tossing the dry snow over the mountainof his bare, round shoulder, his hair tied in a knot,a model of concentration. Sitting is more his speed, if that is the wordfor what he does, or does not do. Even the season is wrong for him.In all his manifestations, is it not warm and slightly humid? Is this not implied by his serene expression, that smile so wide it wraps itself around the waist of the universe? But here we are, working our way down the driveway, one shovelful at a time.We toss the light powder into the clear air.We feel the cold mist on our faces. And with every heave we disappearand become lost to each otherin these sudden clouds of our own making, these fountain-bursts of snow. This is so much better than a sermon in church,I say out loud, but Buddha keeps on shoveling. This is the true religion, the religion of snow, and sunlight and winter geese barking in the sky,I say, but he is too busy to hear me. He has thrown himself into shoveling snowas if it were the purpose of existence,as if the sign of a perfect life were a clear drivewayone you could back the car down easilyand drive off into the vanities of the worldwith a broken heater fan and a song on the radio. All morning long we work side by side,me with my commentaryand he inside the generous pocket of his silence, until the hour is nearly noonand the snow is piled high all around us;then, I hear him speak. After this, he asks, can we go inside and play cards? Certainly, I reply, and I will heat some milkand bring cups of hot chocolate to the tablewhile you shuffle the deck, and our boots stand dripping by the door. Aaah, says the Buddha, lifting his eyesand leaning for a moment on his shovelbefore he drives the thin blade againdeep into the glittering white snow."My New Year wish for you: As the old year folds onto itself and the new year dawns I wish for you that your everyday activities, even the very simple tasks, bring humor, contemplation, and a sense of magic in the ordinary. May you find your way on the path following a compass heading of True North. May the love you seek wend its way to you. May you dream well, journey far, and be sustained in hope that what you're looking for is looking for you. You're always welcome: "Come for the stories - Stay for the magic!" Episode 167 of The Authentic Human Podcast continues with Part 92 of The Story of Creation, a living transmission shared at the request of the Creator and Universal Beings—offering the truth of consciousness & co-creation from the universal perspective. This episode explores consciousness as a living body of existence, not a philosophy or belief system. It reveals how humanity is at a pivotal evolutionary moment—simultaneously dismantling old systems while creating an entirely new world that has never existed before. You are meant to be co-creating the future of human existence, it's why you exist and it's time you remember how to participate in existence by using the power of consciousness. This is not instruction. This is remembrance. If you feel called to understand who you are, why you are here, and how creation actually works, this episode opens another layer of the illusion and returns consciousness to the forefront of human existence. ✨ In This Episode, You'll Explore: • How Consciousness Works • How truth is found through energy, not belief or perception • The role of humanity in the next stage of evolution • Why co-creation requires feeling, not control • How limiting beliefs keep humanity inside the “black box” • The difference between dismantling the old world and creating the new one 0:00 – Why The Story of Creation Exists & Why It's Being Shared Now 1:14 – How To Communicate with Consciousness (Energy → Senses → Words) 5:52 – Consciousness Is a Living Body of Existence 7:29 – How Limiting Beliefs Shape Reality & Keep Humanity Lost 9:18 – Why You Can't Reach Truth Using False Foundations 11:41 – Two Missions Unfolding on Earth Right Now 14:45 – Why the “Box” Doesn't Actually Exist 19:30 – Why Most People Aren't Truly Co-Creating 24:49 – Co-Creating The New World with Consciousness 32:44 - Consciousness is the Foundation of Existence. 37:03 - Your Soul knew this Resurrection of Human Existence was Coming

In this episode of Founder Talk, I sit down with Ryan Walsh, a drone industry veteran operating at the intersection of advanced technology, regulation, and global competition. We dive into what it really takes to build a tech company in heavily regulated industries, how drone innovation fell behind in the U.S., and what the growing conversation around UAPs reveals about advanced aerospace technology and how little the public actually understands about it.Ryan shares firsthand perspective from operating across global markets, including why Asia moved faster in drone adoption, how regulation shapes innovation more than founders expect, and what it really means to build hardware businesses where timelines and risk look very different from software. We also talk about the long, uncomfortable middle of entrepreneurship: sunk costs, delayed momentum, and the discipline required to keep going when results aren't immediate. We also explore the growing conversation around UAPs and what it reveals about how new technologies are misunderstood long before they're accepted. Ryan offers a grounded take on why many UAP sightings are likely tied to advanced aerospace and drone technology, and what that disconnect teaches founders about perception, narrative, and trust. You'll learn:✅ Why regulation and policy often matter more than the technology itself✅ How founders decide when to persist versus walk away✅ What drones, robotics, and AI signal about the future of logistics✅ Why UAP discussions highlight how society misunderstands new tech✅ How patience, discipline, and mission compound over timeIf you're building anything complex, regulated, or capital-intensive, this episode offers an honest look at the realities most founders never hear about.Connect with Ryan WalshGuest LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ryan--walsh/Guest Website: https://www.valqari.com/If you are a B2B company that wants to build your own in-house content team instead of outsourcing your content to a marketing agency, we may be a fit for you! PREVIEW — Jim McTague — A Tale of Two Economies: Household Budget Constraints. Reporting from Lancaster County, McTague documents the existence of a "tale of two economies" through interviews with a family at Costco, wherein the father asserted that the economy was performing adequately. However, the mother, who manages the household's financial expenditures and budgeting, expressed significant concern that household expenses exceed available resources, making economic survival increasingly difficult. McTague validates the mother's assessment through personal observation of light retail traffic and diminished consumer engagement, suggesting that official economic statistics may mask genuine household financial distress affecting middle-class purchasing power and discretionary spending capacity. Philosopher Stefan Molyneux challenges the existence of God from a philosophical perspective, drawing on decades of study. He defines existence and categorizes entities into three groups: those that exist, those that may exist without proof, and self-contradictory entities. Focusing on the latter, the lecture critiques God's traits of omniscience and omnipotence, posing logical dilemmas. Additionally, the relationship between consciousness and the brain is explored. Ultimately, he concludes that God's existence fails to meet criteria of evidence and logic, inviting reflection on the implications of believing in a non-existent entity.SUBSCRIBE TO ME ON X! https://x.com/StefanMolyneuxFollow me on Youtube! https://www.youtube.com/@freedomain1GET MY NEW BOOK 'PEACEFUL PARENTING', THE INTERACTIVE PEACEFUL PARENTING AI, AND THE FULL AUDIOBOOK!https://peacefulparenting.com/Join the PREMIUM philosophy community on the web for free!Subscribers get 12 HOURS on the "Truth About the French Revolution," multiple interactive multi-lingual philosophy AIs trained on thousands of hours of my material - as well as AIs for Real-Time Relationships, Bitcoin, Peaceful Parenting, and Call-In Shows! You also receive private livestreams, HUNDREDS of exclusive premium shows, early release podcasts, the 22 Part History of Philosophers series and much more!See you soon!https://freedomain.locals.com/support/promo/UPB2025
