Marc Steiner: A Life Standing for Free Speech | Ep. 8

The Real News Podcast

“Existence is struggle,” says Marc Steiner. “It always has been, and always will be.”In this podcast series, we've looked at the attacks on free speech rights today in the United States. We looked at the history and how movements and organizations have stood up for and exercised free speech in their work. We looked at how social media, AI, and disinformation are undermining our free speech, and at how people are responding in the United States and abroad. In the final episode of this series, we're focusing on what free speech means within the context of the life of one person who has been through it all — co-host Marc Steiner. He turned 80 earlier this year.  In this episode, Michael Fox sits down with Marc to discuss all of these incredible layers of his life,  from fighting civil rights and community organizing to underground newspapers, street theater, education, and journalism. What do they all mean for him, how do they all add up to nearly seven decades standing up and fighting for free speech, and how they fit into the battle for free speech today?“You have to step back and really listen to what people are saying so you can bring out their truth so others can wrestle with it,” says Marc. “And if they need confronting in their process, you confront it and push back. Which is why when I think about what we do, how important it is — We have a critical role to play in bringing understanding to the world. The truth lives in every corner. And you have to listen. No one has a hold on it.”In our conversation, Marc says right now the battle for free speech is more important than ever. “I think we're politically facing the most dangerous moment in my lifetime,” says Marc, “where the right is seizing power across the country — the racist right is seizing power. And that now the battle for free speech is more critical than ever. We cannot let them take it away. We have to stand up to that.”The Battle for Free Speech Podcast is a production of The Real News Network.Hosted by Michael Fox and Marc Steiner. Is the key to understanding the universe found not only in the cosmos, but also within ourselves? In this thought-provoking episode of The ‘X' Zone, Rob McConnell welcomes author, researcher, and speaker Garland Landrith to discuss The Universe Lies Within. Dr. Landrith explores the relationship between consciousness, personal awareness, and humanity's search for meaning. He shares his perspectives on how self-discovery, spirituality, and inner transformation can influence the way we perceive reality, our place in the universe, and our connection to others. Drawing from philosophy, metaphysical concepts, and personal experience, he encourages listeners to examine both the external and internal worlds with curiosity and openness. Throughout the interview, Rob and Dr. Landrith discuss topics including consciousness, intuition, personal growth, and the enduring questions surrounding the nature of existence. The conversation emphasizes thoughtful exploration and self-reflection while recognizing that many of these ideas remain matters of philosophical and spiritual interpretation rather than established scientific consensus. Whether you're interested in consciousness studies, spirituality, philosophy, or the exploration of human potential, this episode offers an inspiring discussion about the journey inward and the timeless quest to better understand ourselves and the universe around us.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-x-zone-radio-tv-show--1078348/support.Please note that all XZBN radio and/or television shows are Copyright © REL-MAR McConnell Meda Company, Niagara, Ontario, Canada – www.rel-mar.com. Is life the product of chance alone, or does its existence point toward deeper scientific or philosophical questions? In this thought-provoking episode of The ‘X' Zone, Rob McConnell welcomes physicist, author, and science educator Robert Piccioni to explore the fascinating question: Can Life Really Be Merely an Accident? Drawing upon his background in physics and cosmology, Dr. Piccioni examines the scientific principles surrounding the origin of life, the apparent fine-tuning of the universe, probability, evolution, and the fundamental laws of nature. He discusses how science approaches these profound questions while distinguishing between evidence, theory, and philosophical interpretation. Throughout the conversation, Rob and Dr. Piccioni explore topics including cosmology, biology, the conditions necessary for life, and the ongoing dialogue between science, philosophy, and theology. Rather than offering simple answers, the discussion encourages listeners to think critically about one of humanity's oldest and most compelling questions. Whether you're interested in physics, cosmology, biology, philosophy, or the origins of life, this episode offers an engaging exploration of the scientific and philosophical ideas that continue to shape our understanding of existence.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-x-zone-radio-tv-show--1078348/support.Please note that all XZBN radio and/or television shows are Copyright © REL-MAR McConnell Meda Company, Niagara, Ontario, Canada – www.rel-mar.com. I'm actually pure consciousness."19:36 You can stop thinking and all the imagery, but you can't make the consciousness go away, because that's your Self.20:19 Do you rise above that, Baba, in Nirvikalpa Samadhi or Sahaja Samadhi?20:37 Verse 5 comments21:49 What is watching the mind through the mind?24:31 So there is a duality in the sense that there's a knowingness going on, but there's no second thing, it's just knowing itself.25:40 So we're using the mind's attention to watch itself, is that what we're trying to accomplish with meditation?27:28 So once you get absorbed in that point there is just seeing?28:36 As you become absorbed in between the eyebrows, you are no longer seeing with the eyeballs, but yet you continue to see with your mind's eye?29:40 Reading of verses.31:25 All the universe has arisen in this Self simply by imagination.33:14 "You realize that this space is the ultimate Truth and Pure Consciousness."34:32 "Space is the source of consciousness of Self Existence."35:10 "Every term used is as an imagination for the sake of understanding and communication in this world."37:21 "The universe is also a higher consciousness magic show with no existence value"38:32 What's the difference between pure awareness and pure consciousness?39:09 Which will exist after the finishing of the body and mind — Pure Awareness, or Pure Consciousness?39:26 So awareness requires mind?39:45 What's the difference between Pure Consciousness and Consciousness of Existence?40:27 Sometimes you've given the example, if a person is looking in a mirror, the image in the mirror can't see the person. Is the person in that example consciousness, and the image in the mirror the mind?41:05 Why does the mind constantly test itself?42:41 In reality is there a specific auspicious or inauspicious time?44:15 Why would one come back to the body after the merger has happened?44:51 Just before the merger there's a warmth of duality that is experienced before you merge? Can one experience loved ones before the merger?47:41 What is the concept of 'the feet of Lord Vishnu'?48:51 Is the external world and what's happening also part of the mind — the same mind as the inner mind, but a higher potency?50:01 There is only one divinity, there is nothing else? So then everything is God?51:22 What do you mean watch the thoughts? Either thought is not there, or I am not watching it. 53:30 You don't try to actually watch the thought that you're having? You just continue to watch without imagining?54:32 My video was off during the initiation.  Have I received Baba's initiation?55:01 Just before merging, is there any Samyama that is helpful for Moksha, or is patience all that is needed? 57:38 If you have an intention when performing samyama, will it help to manifest that intention?58:16 Is dhyana, meditation, the ending of experience?___Website: http://www.srby.orgFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/shivarudrabalayogiTwitter: https://twitter.com/SRBYmissionInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/shivarudrabalayogi/Register your free place for the live online meditation and Q&A with Babaji: https://www.shivarudrabalayogi.org/en/online-satsang Website: http://www.srby.orgFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/shivarudrabalayogiTwitter: https://twitter.com/SRBYmissionInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/shivarudrabalayogi/

The greatest proof that God is real may be far simpler than most people expect. Al, Christian, and John Luke join him to examine how nature, Scripture, reason, and faith work together to reveal who God is, why blind faith is not biblical faith, and how believers can keep growing beyond shallow social media theology. Gilles Deleuze is multifaceted and his works seemingly heteroclite, which has made it difficult to assess what a “Deleuzian” philosophy may be, even if there are a host of philosophical concepts that bear his signature.  Most secondary works on him tend to approach him through one of his works on the canonical philosophers, arguing, for example, that Deleuze is and always was a Nietzschean or a Bergsonian or a Spinozist.  But these seem to miss what it means to be properly “Deleuzian.”What would it mean to read Deleuze “conceptually” and systematically across all of his works?  Is there some unifying thread that not only gathers together his philosophical concerns, but also shows us how to read all of his monographic works from start to finish and reveal what a Deleuzian philosophy is?Our guest today, Nathan Widder of Royal Holloway University, proposes a possible way to navigate this dilemma.   For Nathan, the concept that constitutes this guiding thread is the concept of sense.  From his earliest published work–an essay reviewing Hyppolite's Logic and Existence–to his two magni opei (Difference and Repetition, and the aptly named The Logic of Sense), the concept of sense is, according to Nathan, the organizing conceptual principle that drives all of Deleuze''s analyses and animates his philosophical questioning.   So, what is the concept of sense in the work of Deleuze?  What does he mean by it, and how does it organize his philosophical project?  These are the questions we tackle in this week's episode – and if you''e worried that you do not know much about Deleuze, worry no more, because neither did we.   But thanks to Nathan and his new book Deleuze and the Logic of Sense (SUNY Press, 2026) we all learned a lot – and so will you.Full episode notes available at this link:https://hotelbarpodcast.com/podcast/deleuze---------------------SUBSCRIBE to the podcast now to automatically download new episodes!SUPPORT Hotel Bar Sessions podcast on Patreon here! How do you know God exists? What reasons do atheists have to doubt God’s existence? Can you arrive at certainty? These questions are among the most significant that you can ask. If God exists, there are huge implications for your daily life. If not, then you can more or less choose your own adventure, making up meaning as you go. My guest today is Andrew Drinkard, the editor and project lead on an interesting book called Debating God’s Existence: Believers and Skeptics in Friendly Conversation, published by Eerdmans. In the interview that follows I ask him about his backstory as well as the story behind the debate this book was based on. We discuss Dan Barker’s argument against God based on the problem of evil as well as Adam Johnson’s argument for God based on objective morality. Then we engage a bit with Drinkard’s own content in the book regarding divine hiddenness. But before getting to the interview, let me say a couple of words about our guest today. Andrew Drinkard is the director of Inspiring Christianity ministries at inspiringchristianity.com. He holds an MA in theological studies and apologetics from Liberty University and is currently completing an MA in philosophy of religion at Palm Beach Atlantic University. God's Eternal Judgment starts after death and it's vital we are ready for it. He will judge us all individually & seal our eternal destiny, based on our response to Him in this life. We go through 3 Phases of Existence. *(1) THIS LIFE, where our inner man lives in a mortal body - a temporary state, for when we die our spirit leaves our body. *(2) The INTERMEDIATE STATE, when we continue to exist as a disembodied spirit. This is also temporary, ending with our resurrection. *(3) The ETERNAL STATE starts at our resurrection, when our spirit puts on an immortal body. All men are ultimately divided into 2 groups, with 2 opposite eternal destinies, either everlasting glory in God's Presence, or everlasting separation from God in Hell. This is decided at death, when a permanent separation between the saved & unsaved takes place –Stage 1 of man's Eternal Judgment. The condition of each soul at death determines its destiny for eternity (Ecc 11:3). Only in this life do you have the chance to get right with God. After you die, your eternity is fixed forever (Rev 22:11). A man either dies under condemnation or in grace. Man is born in a state of sin & guilt before God (John 3:17-18, Eph 2:1-3). Jesus is our only hope of salvation (Acts 4:12). We have a choice to accept or reject Christ & His salvation. Those in Christ will be with Him forever in Heaven. But those who reject Him will die in their sins & be lost forever in Hell (John 8:24). So, Stage 1 of man's Eternal Judgment happens right after death (Heb 9:27). When his spirit leaves his body, he faces a private judicial sentencing from God. If he dies in his sins, (1) he is found guilty and sent to a place of punishment in Hades. Then later, at his resurrection, (2) he'll stand before God a 2nd time for final sentencing at the Great White Throne & dismissal into the Lake of Fire, the degree of his punishment determined by the degree of his rebellion (Rev 20:11-15). But, Christ made another eternal destiny possible. Those who trust in Him don't face damnation when they die, for Jesus took it for us. They'll be found to be righteous in Him & go to Heaven. So, at death, God sends a man to one of 2 locations - a place of punishment or a place of blessing (Paradise). At this point his eternal destiny is fixed. When God reunites man's spirit with his body in the resurrection, we'll stand before God for the 2nd & final stage of Eternal Judgment, when we'll be released into our final Eternal State, either in glory or in the Lake of Fire. He who dies in his sins will be sent to a place of initial punishment in Hades, to await his resurrection to his final Eternal Judgment. But he who dies in the Lord has passed from death to life (John 5:24-25, Rom 8:1). So, when we die, we'll be released to go to Paradise to await our resurrection, when we'll stand before Christ's Judgment Seat, to receive our eternal rewards and be released into our eternal state, with a corresponding measure of glory. God's Eternal Judgment operates like our court-system: in 2 Stages. Stage 1 at death determines guilt or innocence. At death, God separates mankind into 2 groups. Saved spirits go to Paradise, but the wicked go down to a place of punishment in Hades, a holding cell, where they're kept until their final judgment. Then Stage 2 after his resurrection, decides his sentencing (degree of punishment or reward), based on his works. (1) The righteous will stand before the Judgment Seat of Christ to be judged to determine the degree of their eternal rewards of glory, according to their works, and then be released into their eternal state of glory. (2) When the unsaved are resurrected at the end of time, they'll stand before the Great White Throne for final sentencing & dismissal into their eternal state & place of punishment, the Lake of Fire (Rev 20). They'll be judged according to their works, to determine the degree of their everlasting punishment. We have 2 appointments with God we can't miss, which determine our eternal future. (1) After our death, to determine if we go up to Heaven or down to Hades. (2) After our resurrection, to determine the degree of our eternal reward or punishment. Before Jesus' resurrection, the departed spirits of all men went down to an invisible realm under the earth (SHEOL or HADES), a holding cell, where all men awaited their final judgment. The true story of the rich man& Lazarus (Luke 16:19-31) describes life after death in Hades, for the saved & lost, before Christ's resurrection. It proves men's souls are conscious after death. All went down to HADES, but to different compartments. The saved went to PARADISE (Luke 23;43) or ABRAHAM'S BOSOM, but the wicked to TORMENTS, a place of punishment. By His resurrection Jesus overcame the power of Hades for His Church (Matt 16:18), and when we trust in Him our spirits are born again & made perfect by our union with the resurrected Christ (1Pet 1:3), so at death our spirits no longer go down to Hades, but up to Heaven.

Did God Really Command Genocide? The Truth About the Canaanites Few biblical passages trouble Christians—and fuel atheist criticism—more than Israel's conquest of Canaan. Critics argue these texts portray God as morally indistinguishable from history's greatest tyrants. In this episode, Lenny Esposito examines what Scripture actually teaches about the destruction of the Canaanite nations. Looking at the biblical concept of holiness, the historical practices of Canaanite religion, and the logic behind the accusation itself, he explains why many popular criticisms misunderstand both the historical context and the nature of divine judgment.

How We Disappear: Thomas Mullaney's All-Too-Personal History of Information

Keen On Democracy

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 1, 2026 42:52

“The second law of thermodynamics is not to be negotiated with.” — Thomas S. Mullaney The second law of thermodynamics is non-negotiable. The universe will end. Every human being dies. Everything decays and every record disintegrates. So why record history? Why bother remembering? These are the questions that the Stanford historian Thomas S. Mullaney addresses in his intriguing new book, How We Disappear: A Personal History of Information. How We Disappear is triggered by grief. Mullaney's father — a man he never fully understood, an exile in an estranged household — died unexpectedly in 2017. Sitting in his father's office surrounded by the “paperwork of death,” Mullaney's training as a historian crystallised into an all-too-personal project of disappearance. It's a book about what Mullaney calls “intransitive disappearance” — not the spectacular, cataclysmic kind of traditional historiography (wars, book burnings, genocide) but the everyday, uneventful ways things fall apart. Like Thomas Mullaney's dad. Existence as obsolescence, erosion, sinescence and the slow drift of the unremarkable into nothing. History, in Mullaney's account, is a Sisyphean fight against this nothingness. We tell stories to survive and maintain the polite appearance of coherence. If you actually tried to reconstruct experience — the thing-in-itself — you would need an infinite library of trillion-page books. Existence, for Mullaney, is a swirl of stimuli and daydream. History tries to domesticate this Borgesian swirl. So does consciousness itself. That's why, as Mullaney memorably puts it, “historians do the dirty work of necromancers.” Which is to say they try to negotiate with the second law of thermodynamics. Five Takeaways •       Intransitive Disappearance: The Everyday Way Things Fall Apart: Mullaney's central concept: intransitive disappearance. Not the spectacular, cataclysmic kind — book burnings, genocide, the destruction of the Library of Alexandria — but the everyday, drifty, uneventful ways things disintegrate. Obsolescence. Erosion. Sinescence. The unremarkable drift of the unremarkable into nothing. He became obsessed with these forms of disappearance — a pack rat across every discipline he could think of — for twenty-five years. His father's unexpected death in 2017, sitting in his father's office amid the paperwork of death, crystallised what had been inchoate into a book. •       History as Domesticated Experience: The Trillion-Page Book: If you tried to actually reconstruct experience — the actual thing, unfiltered — you would need a trillion-page book that would make Naked Lunch look like a kindergarten primer. You'd have to say how many hairs were on his head; whether he favoured his left foot over his right; the scent of his aftershave. Experience, unfiltered, is an n-dimensional vortex of stimuli and daydream. Anytime you read a work of history, you are reading experience that has been domesticated into narrative — with turning points, main characters, thematic arguments. Historians know this. Every practising historian knows that the ideal of reconstructing human experience can never be reached. •       The Vocal Defence of History: Why Do It If You Know It's Impossible? Mullaney's answer to the subversive question: history is just the professional counterpart of what every human being does every second of their existence. You, right now, telling yourself the story of your experience, are already well into postproduction. Your experience of being a person in a chair talking to another person on a couch — that is already domesticated. Human beings need to tell stories to live, to maintain continuity, to maintain coherence. Historians do the same thing under certain rules and protocols. The futility of history is the futility of consciousness itself. Neither is a reason not to try. •       The Second Law of Thermodynamics Is Not to Be Negotiated With: The universe will end. Every human being dies. Everything we create decays. Every record disintegrates. Mullaney is unsparing about this. He is also, in his strange way, cheerful about it: we don't need to last forever to have meant something. The meaning is not in the permanence. It is in the making. He would like the Silicon Valley immortality seekers — Kurzweil, the others, all those negotiating with thermodynamics from Palo Alto — to read the book, to face the facts, and then to find the alternative: rejoining physical reality and finding very deep meaning in that. •       AI Bots of Deceased Parents: Stop: Andrew raises the obvious question: what would Mullaney say to the people in Palo Alto building AI bots of your deceased mother and father, so they can exist forever for your children and grandchildren? Mullaney's answer is one word: stop. Human beings do not have the wetware — the biological critical apparatus — to maintain distance from a deep fake of their deceased parent. It short-circuits us. It bypasses our limitations. He cannot fathom, outside of very specific, closely monitored therapeutic settings, an argument in which this is a good idea. Paul Postman's phrase: we are amusing ourselves to death. And there is very little critical reflection coming out of the neighbourhoods where this stuff is being made. About the Guest Thomas S. Mullaney is Professor of History at Stanford University, a Guggenheim Fellow, and the former Kluge Chair in Technology and Society at the Library of Congress. He is the author of How We Disappear: A Personal History of Information (W. W. Norton, June 23, 2026) and four previous books on Chinese history and technology, including The Chinese Typewriter: A History (winner of multiple awards). He lives in Palo Alto, California. References: •       How We Disappear: A Personal History of Information by Thomas S. Mullaney (W. W. In Keen On America, Andrew brings his pointed Transatlantic wit to making sense of the United States — hosting daily interviews about the history and future of this now venerable Republic. With nearly 3,000 episodes since the show launched on TechCrunch in 2010, Keen On America is the most prolific intellectual interview show in the history of podcasting.

Who is Godot? Whether God, objet a, or an abstraction from any object that is supposed to resolve dramatic suspense, it is clear that Vladimir and Estragon imagine him to be an agent of salvation (even if they can't remember exactly what it is that needs saving). Perhaps the name is meant to satirize any states of expectancy—aspirational, libidinal, political, or religious—insofar they seem to be a means to a kind of spiritual completion that is impossible. Except, arguably, in the imagination, including its refinements in the products of the arts. If Samuel Beckett is too cool to provide us with ordinary entertainment and edification, does he mean to bore us, berate us, or do nothing at all? Erin & Wes pass time by discussing “Waiting for Godot,” and whether frustrating expectations is sometimes better than either violating or gratifying them. It took him thirteen years to say that out loud. His patients include a nurse whose blood pressure doubled while trying to save her father, a boy whose growth stalled on an inherited memory, and a great-grandson born unable to breathe (a biological echo of a grandfather who fled a breathalyzer test). If you have ever wondered why the same struggle keeps showing up in your body, this episode reframes the question. You'll Learn:[0:00] Introduction[12:24] Why the diet that reverses preeclampsia 100% of the time was buried for 30 years[18:40] The hospice nurse who made Dr. Massey promise the peroxide IVs wouldn't extend her patient's life[26:58] Discovering human magnificence after 13 years of looking at blood the wrong way[31:56] Changing “I” to “we”: celiac disease as a love story for the family system[41:03] The rabbi who revealed the original fifth commandment and how it underwrites constellations[48:51] The boy whose body formed around his grandfather's fear of a breathalyzer test[1:01:27] The 55-year fantasy that ended when one excluded perpetrator was finally seen[1:46:11] Why Western culture won't raise its hand the way the Zulu villagers did[1:56:47] The ICU nurse whose blood pressure doubled, trying to save her father's life[2:03:13] Parenting kids under seven: how to remove inherited programs[2:10:07] Why every ultraviolet IV is secretly a family constellation in disguise[2:42:29] The 19-year autonomy timeline and why your injuries keep repeating on schedule[2:49:32] Reading leaky gut through Klinghardt's five levels, and the old woman in the shoeRelated The Way Forward Episodes:The Hidden Meaning of The Law of One: Densities, Love & Humanity's Evolution with Edmund Knighton | PodcastFamily Constellations & The Golden Spiral with Danica Apolline-Matić | PodcastHow Trauma & Emotions Cause Diseases: 4.5 Hour Masterclass on German New Medicine with Dr. Melissa Sell | PodcastThe Mechanics of Trauma, Suffering & God's Unconditional Love with Brandon Bozarth | PodcastBeyond Death's Door: Mediumship, Life, Death & the Nature of Existence with Suzanne Giesemann | PodcastThe New Frontier of Biology: Water, Fields & Consciousness with Carlos Millán | PodcastResources Mentioned:Pyramid of Health by Gilbert Renaud | BookFamily Constellations by Joy Manne, Ph.D. | BookI Am (Documentary) | IMDbFind more from Dr. Richard:Dr. Richard Massey | Instagram Find more from Alec:Alec Zeck | Instagram | XThe Way Forward | InstagramDonate to The Way Forward hereThe Way Forward is Sponsored By:Want more crypto insights and a community to back you up?Join the Crypto Freedom Academy today.
