The series explores the book SPIRITUAL EVOLUTION by Dr. George E. Vaillant. The author was a psychiatrist at Harvard and served as a non-alcoholic Trustee for Alcoholics Anonymous. Spirituality can be a hard concept to grasp, and his book helps make it understandable. He defines spirituality as the realization of positive emotions such as love, hope, faith, joy, forgiveness, and compassion – along with awe and mystical illumination. The author argues our brains are hard wired for these and through the 12 Step journey, we're evolving – “sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly” towards realizing them in our lives This episode focuses on Awe and Mystical Illumination –the goal of the 12-Step Journey. Jungian analyst and clinical psychologist Dr. Ian McCabe continues leading listeners on a journey through the 12 Steps "from a Jungian perspective." Fully half of the 12 Steps are about “cleaning up” our relationships with ourselves, with others, and with the “Greater Personality” or as the Big Book calls it: the “Great Reality” within. Father Bill refers to these six Steps as the “CORRECTION PHASE” of the program and the discussion centers on facing and assimilating the Shadow part of ourselves. Show Notes: Carl Jung and Alcoholics Anonymous by Ian McCabe For information on Bill Wilson's experimentation with LDS see: Distilled Spirits -- Getting High, Then Sober, With a Famous Writer, a Forgotten Philosopher, and a Hopeless Drunk by Don Lattin. Here's a brief outline: Distilled Spirits blends a religion reporter's memoir with the compelling stories of three men--Aldous Huxley, Gerald Heard, and Bill Wilson--who transformed the landscape of Western religion and spirituality in the twentieth century. Huxley, celebrated author of Brave New World, ignited a generation that chased utopian dreams and sought enlightenment through psychedelic drugs. Heard, an Anglo-Irish mystic, journeyed to California with Huxley in the 1930s to lay the foundations for the New Age and human potential movements. Wilson, the co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous, joined forces with Huxley and Heard in the 1940s and 1950s, when Wilson began a series of little-known experiments to see if LSD could be used to help diehard drunks. Their life stories are gracefully brought together by veteran journalist Don Lattin. Lattin recounts his own rocky personal journey from 1960s and 1970s counter-culture, through the fast-living, cocaine-fueled 1980s and 1990s, to his long struggle to get sober. By weaving an intimate account of his own recovery with the lives of the book's three central characters, Lattin shows us the redemptive power of storytelling, the strength of fellowship, and the power of living more compassionately, one day at a time. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/fatherbillw/support

He first found his own brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated “the Christ”), and he brought Simon to Jesus. 2. Simon was busy v. 42-43 When Jesus saw him, he said, “You are Simon, son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which is translated “Peter”). The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. 3. Philip was just chillin' v. 43-45 He found Philip and told him, “Follow me.” Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the hometown of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the law (and so did the prophets): Jesus the son of Joseph, from Nazareth.” 4. Nathanael was skeptical v. 46-51 “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Nathanael asked him. “Come and see,” Philip answered. Then Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said about him, “Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.” “How do you know me?” Nathanael asked. “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you,” Jesus answered. “Rabbi,” Nathanael replied, “You are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel!” Jesus responded to him, “Do you believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this.” Then he said, “Truly I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.” Don't miss our news and announcements! 120: Luis Benitez: Professional Mountain Guide has balanced his life between two countries, Ecuador and the United States, and between mountaineering and being of service to military veterans. Luis Benitez  Host Mark Pattison sums up his new guest Luis Benitez with the quote: “The only thing that isn’t ok is to quit trying.” Luis Benitez grew up in Ecuador and the United States with asthma. But that breathing complication didn’t prevent him from going up the famous Cotopaxi mountain, the second highest summit in Ecuador, which reaches a height of over 19,000 feet: “Spending time in altitude really helps your lungs get stronger. The air is thinner, cleaner, and it forces you to breathe hard.”   On this episode of Finding Your Summit Podcast, we talk with Luis Benitez, Professional Mountain Guide in Colorado, who takes his role in mountaineering seriously: “You got to put in the work. The thing I love about mountaineering is that it doesn’t matter how big of a check you write to work with a guide in some remote corner of the world, if you are not prepared, and if you haven’t put in the work, it is going to be the biggest waste of money you have ever put on the table. I think one of the things that is so rewarding about mountaineering is, you can’t fake it.”   What You Will Learn:   The love of the great outdoors and mountaineering itself began at a young age. It was also connected to his fight against the restrictions of asthma: “The higher we would go, the calmer it would make me. Because those were the things that really kept my breathing in check and kept me calm during an asthma attack as a kid...When I really started getting into mountaineering, it think it was like any other professional athlete that really finds that passion at a young age. It is all consuming. You sleep it, eat it, drink it, live it.”    Luis Benitez lives up to his own quote: “Challenge yourself and change your world.” But what was it in his life that was the driver behind this message? Luis discusses the importance of human evolution, the need to challenge ourselves to exceed our perceived limitations. “The more advanced we are from a technology standpoint, the more complacent we are with stepping out of our mental and physical comfort zones. It is one of those unique things where technology has brought us so much and has helped so much. But then there is still this thing of human vs. nature.”   Luis talks about examples of going beyond his limits by talking about his first time on Mount Everest, a mountain he has now been on seven times, with the first blind man to climb it, Erik Weihenmayer. “It was the experience of a lifetime for sure. Thank God for all of us. We said a quiet prayer everyday that, Erik was and is an incredibly capable teammate. So he is not somebody who showed up and expected to be dragged somewhere. He was a very competent and safe climber. Which, we never would have been able to get it done without his level skill.”    Luis Benitez gets into what it has been like becoming a professional mountain guide who was a part of Adventure Consultants, founded by Rob Hall Into Thin Air who passed away on the top of Mount. Everest. Luis met the successor of the company, Guy Cotter, as well. Into Thin Air is the 1997 bestselling non-fiction book written by Jon Krakauer that covers the 1996 Mount Everest disaster, in which eight climbers were killed on an expedition led by guide Rob Hall.   Luis Benitez has done the seven summits 32 times. What was the most challenging mountain out of all of them? Find out when he shares it along with picking his hardest trip. He also talks about how no one summited in 2010. “What can makes a mountain challenging varies. The terrain can be great but the team can be awful, and vice-versa.”    Consulting and Green Space   Learn about how the consulting side of mountaineering has been like for Luis Benitez, along with his interest in politics and economic development:  “I have been lucky enough to grow up within the outdoor industry. I was an outward bound instructor starting when I was 19. My American grandfather owed a sporting goods store. I got into mountaineering in high school, and later on in life, which became my professional career. As you know when you are a guide, you have to be a doctor, lawyer, engineer, priest, rabbi, politician all rolled into one.”  Find out how green space can impact are health and daily lives: “Green space does something to your chemical makeup. In your brain and in your body. There is actually direct causality and health benefits to spending time outside. To the point where doctors now in four countries and in three states are legally allowed to prescribe time outside instead of prescribing a course of medication.”     Warriors to Summits    Luis Benitez talks about starting his non profit organization Warriors to Summits: “We wanted to help create an organization that not only gave back to the veteran community, but do it in our own way. This wasn’t just about sitting under a tree and trying to reconnect with nature and heal a little. This was about going out and stepping out of your comfort zone.” Don’t miss a moment of mountaineering passion with this episode of the Finding Your Summit Podcast with guest Luis Benitez. 119: Pastor Richard Dahlstrom: Senior Pastor at Bethany Community Church, Author of “The Colors of Hope,” “The Map is not the Journey,” “Breathing New Life into Faith,” and Torchbearer Bible Teacher for Timberline Ministries went from losing his dad at a young age to merging mountains with his ministry.    Pastor Richard Dahlstrom  How exactly did Pastor Richard Dahlstrom develop a love of the mountains? Pastor Richard Dahlstrom grew up right outside of Yosemite in Fresno, California. When he was young, his father experienced severe pneumonia and bronchitis, ultimately taking his life at only 53-years-old. By the time Richard’s father was 40, he had really weak lungs, even after being athletic in his youth and never being a smoker. When he was living, he struggled to elevate beyond 3000 feet without breathing complications. After losing his dad when Richard was only 17, self-care and connecting to the outdoors became even more crucial to him.    On this episode of Finding Your Summit Podcast, we talk with Pastor Richard Dahlstrom, Senior Pastor at Bethany Community Church, Author of “The Colors of Hope,” “The Map is not the Journey,” “Breathing New Life into Faith,” and Torchbearer Bible Teacher for Timberline Ministries. In fact, “The Map is not the Journey” is about Richard and his wife of 40 years hiking through The Alps for 40 days. He met his wife in a speech class after he relocated to Seattle to study music. “Hiking, rock climbing, and mountaineering are the best teachers of what it means to live a whole life. I really feel like when I’m out there I am learning lessons that can’t be learned anywhere else.”  What You Will Learn: “My wife and I we started a program, and the best way to describe it would be a blend of bible school and outward bound, where we were integrating bible teaching with rock climbing.” They continued to do this for six years and it just clarified for Pastor Richard Dahlstrom the importance of getting out in the world and directly encountering what God has to say to them through creation and not just by studying text.    “When God made us, He made us as whole people. We are not just brains. We are not just spirit. We are spirits and we have souls, like a mind and an emotional being and we have a body, and all of those things work together as an ecosystem.” By ignoring the maintenance of either the mind, emotions, or the body, all the others may suffer. We can’t be any good to others if our body is in poor shape. His dad’s death really weighed in on the priority he takes in his health and making the most of each moment.    “As a pastor, I go, ‘man, both the Jewish tradition and the Christian tradition are filled with passages in the bible that say, ‘we are learning the goodness of God and the glory of God through creation.’ So, that everytime I’m taking a breath it’s gratitude.” He discusses how he has witnessed people skiing that are surrounded by the beauty of nature that God created for us to enjoy. But they were too busy arguing or cursing to allow their spirit to be moved by the experience.    Pastor Richard Dahlstrom talks about self-care and how he incorporates it into his teachings. “I believe that we are designed to live our life out from a full cup. So, if I have a full cup, and I see you by the side of the road and you are thirsty, then I have the resources to say, ‘Hey Mark, come over here man. There is plenty in my cup. Let me share with you.’ That whole mindset, it creates a mentality of abundance where I go, ‘there is not just enough, there is more than enough.’” In order to live with a full cup with the ability to share requires that we have to live with a full cup emotionally, bodily, and spiritually.    Richard and Mark discuss how they have followed the Everest tragedies that have occurred in 2019. Mark shares a personal story of someone he knew that lost fingers and toes, and then eventually died on Mount Everest. Pastor Richard Dahlstrom addresses the importance of being prepared for challenging tasks, but also having the willingness to back away and recognize when you are in over your head and not letting pride and ego force you to forge onward into a dangerous situation.    Becoming a Preacher Pastor Richard Dahlstrom talks about how he got reacquainted with God on a ski retreat after letting the words of a motivational speaker sink in. The speaker’s theme for the weekend was Knowing God. “He said, ‘I’m just here to tell you guys that none of you are ever going to live the life for which you created unless you make knowing God a central goal.” At this point in Richard’s life, he had stepped away from God, and this speech left a strong enough impression that he enrolled in Alaska Bible College and started helping other people get to know God.    Have Flexible Goals Richard Dahlstrom believes that it is important to not just have goals but to have goals that are flexible enough to adjust and adapt when need be to ensure that you evolve and change towards being where you are most needed. He was preaching to a small group in the mountains and was told by a guy he met in India who was from Seattle that he should go apply to a big church in Seattle. Pastor Richard Dahlstrom reluctantly did so and was hired by a unanimous vote. In hindsight, Richard believes that moving to Seattle to preach was the best decision he and his wife have made together.  Links to Additional Resources: Pastor Richard Dahlstrom: Linkedin  Twitter Bethany Community Church: churchbcc.org Step by Step Journey: stepbystepjourney.com Laird Superfood – Code: Markp20 [Sponsor] Cascade Mountain Tech [Sponsor]   E-Learning Course Be sure to check out Mark’s new e-learning course here. Her work is based on the intersection of where the human body and experience meets past–and even ancestral–trauma, and shows how each individual’s authentic and true self is the source of one’s own good – a place of unlimited abundance, creativity, courage, and joyful existence. During our conversation, Carolin and I will cover interacting with pleasure using all of your senses, what keeps us in a state of lack, and the small decisions she made that took her from sick on the couch to living in tropical paradise. We’ll also discuss: The 4 steps of Pleasure IQ   Her book, Blossom - The 7-Step Journey to Healing Childhood Sexual Abuse and Creating Your Dream Life The 5-day clarity she experienced after a breakdown, and how she leads other women to that place What manifestations she saw during her experience that built trust around what she now calls pleasure IQ    The importance of having a coach or mentor when you're making an energetic shift Balancing feminine and masculine energy Staying at a high vibration and how that looks different for everyone How guilt and shame differ from other emotions, and how they manifest Family constellation work (this is so interesting!) Carolin also describes her morning routine, which includes setting an intention in her free Facebook group, Women in the Flow. How does spirituality impact our understanding and acceptance of scientific findings?Join host Chris Schembra in this episode of his podcast series, 7:47 Conversations, as he welcomes Spencer Gerrol, Founder and CEO of SPARK Neuro, in a conversation to explore the neuroscience behind empathy and emotions. On his own self-defined 5 Step Journey, Mr. Gerrol shares the origin story of his business venture, how being a first-generation American has led to a feeling of personal responsibility, and how he takes “pride in the struggle.”In the practical philosophy teachings of The School of Life, Roman Krznaric states that we must seek to understand our fears, as well as those of others, in our quest to find fulfilling work. Fundamentally, the development and expansion of Emotional Intelligence is the key to success in our business and personal relationships. How then does empathy differ from the Theory of Mind? And is it possible to actually capture data related to our emotions?SPARK Neuro seeks to quantify these intangibles, with tools and algorithms that measure brain activity and physical responses to stimuli. Listen as Mr. Schembra and his guest explore the meaning of 17th century's French philosopher Rene Decartes’s proposition, “I think, therefore I am.” (Latin: Cogito ergo sum) From intuition to deliberate thought, how and what we think defines who we truly are.In 2015, the 7:47 Club was founded by Mr. Schembra to create a conversational environment promoting Authenticity ~ Empathy ~ Vulnerability ~ Safety.
