Approximately 180k images.   A little over 24 hours later, Nancy vanishes and the internet starts connecting some dots, suggesting strings were pulled to ensure her disappearance monopolized the national news stage instead of the most recent Epstein files dump.   Netizens cite Savannah Guthrie's 2019 interview with 6 of Epstein's survivors including Shante Davies who was pictured with the former US president Bill Clinton and the now late, Virginia Guiffre. Selznick's production drips with “movie” and artificiality, yet still delivers an ending that seems taken from Greek tragedy. I never thought I'd be glued to my screen watching courtrooms turn into the main stage of American politics, but here we are on March 15, 2026, and the trials involving Donald Trump are heating up like a pressure cooker about to blow. Picture this: I'm sipping my morning coffee in my Washington, D.C. apartment, scrolling through updates on the federal election interference case in U.S. District Court under Judge Tanya Chutkan. Just last week, Trump's lawyers, John Lauro and Todd Blanche, doubled down on their wild push for an April 2026 trial date, arguing that the 11.5 million pages of discovery from Special Counsel Jack Smith's team—stacked up, they say, taller than eight Washington Monuments—demand at least two and a half years to review. According to Politico reports from the filings, they claim it's only fair since prosecutors had that long to build the case against Trump for his alleged conspiracies to subvert the 2020 election results, from fake electors to pressuring state officials like in Georgia.But hold on—prosecutors aren't buying it. Molly Gaston from Smith's office fired back in a Courthouse News Service brief, calling the defense's math ridiculous. She pointed out that 65% of those documents were already public or duplicates, including stuff from the National Archives, Trump's own Truth Social posts, and the House January 6 Select Committee transcripts. They front-loaded the key evidence, she said, with another 615,000 pages dropped over the weekend, 20% from Trump's own entities. No way this justifies kicking the trial into the next presidential term, they argue, especially since Trump knows most of this from the Jan. 6 hearings. Judge Chutkan, the no-nonsense Obama appointee, has warned Trump against inflammatory Truth Social rants that could taint the jury pool in D.C., hinting she'll speed things up if he keeps it up.Meanwhile, across the circuits, Trump's legal calendar is a nightmare. There's a concept within statecraft known as grand strategy. The "grand" strategy means paying attention to every avenue of conflict, not just the military sphere, but also the diplomatic, the logistical, and the domestic, and everywhere else advantage might be gained or lost. It encompasses soft power, irregular actions, public opinion, etc. But at the same time, it also encompasses prioritization and focus, because, while it's important to consider every avenue, resources are always limited and need to be spent wisely.  A great example of grand strategy done right is the US in WWII. We supported the Soviets, we developed nukes, we invaded Europe, we came together as a nation, and most of all, we buried the Axis with our industrial capacity.  For an example of grand strategy done poorly consider Vietnam. Our battlefield tactics were great. But at the strategic level we comprehensively failed in almost every domain. There was vast domestic opposition, political goals were unclear, we failed to contain the conflict geographically, and never really understood the resolve of the Vietnamese people. You might think that the point of grand strategy, if well executed, would be winning. I disagree, I think the point of grand strategy is not losing. (There's probably an essay to be written about how this applies to Iran, but I think we have enough hot takes on that subject at the moment.) Grand strategy asks you to pay attention to all potential avenues by which disaster may arrive. Disaster in Vietnam did not arrive through the front door, it came from many unexpected directions, but an unexpected disaster is still a disaster, and generally worse than disasters which have been foreseen. As one considers the various aspects of grand strategy, what would it mean to have a personal grand strategy? And how would that be different from just living a "good life"? William Allen White, the editor of The Emporia Gazette in Kansas, was an American institution. When he died in 1944, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt commented that America had lost one of its “wisest and most beloved editors.” White understood the value of his unique brand as “the voice of Main Street,” and would often preach his vision of the kind of nation the United States ought to be. From his view in Emporia, White's imagined Midwestern town was a dream for the nation to strive toward. He saw himself as a pioneer sowing the seeds of a great harvest to come, and he believed that the small-town civilization he venerated exemplified what was best in America. In Heartland Utopia: William Allen White on the Ideal Midwestern Town (UP of Kansas, 2026), Charles Delgadillo and Jason Stacy have gathered nearly twenty-five years of White's fiction and nonfiction focused on his idealized Midwestern community and how this utopian vision changed over time. Charles Delgadillo is a lecturer in history at the California State University, Pomona, and the author of Crusader for Democracy: The Political Life of William Allen White, published by Kansas.
