Travis Louie Episode 031: December 14, 2024 Fellow Pratt grad Travis Louie joins me to discuss art, illustration, finding your voice and standing out from the crowd. About Travis Louie: Travis Louie's paintings come from the tiny little drawings and many writings in his journals. He has created his own imaginary world that is grounded in Victorian and Edwardian times. It is inhabited by human oddities, mythical beings, and otherworldly characters who appear to have had their formal portraits taken to mark their existence. The underlying thread that connects all these characters is the unusual circumstances that shape who they were and how they lived. Some of their origins are a complete mystery while others are hinted at. A man is cursed by a goat, a strange furry being is discovered sleeping in a hedge, an engine driver can't seem to stop vibrating in his sleep, a man overcomes his phobia of spiders, etc, … Using acrylic paint washes and simple textures on smooth boards, he has created portraits from an alternative universe that seemingly may or may not have existed. His work is about identity and remembrance, with a veiled commentary on racism and the immigrant experience. He would like the fear of "the other" to be replaced with a curiosity about the unknown and a sense of wonder regarding those things that are unfamiliar. In this episode Jessica pressed the wrong button and invited Travis Louie to this episode. An extra long episode occurred. The PaintingLoft Podcast is about the "Dark Art" community. Exhibitions, Artists, Techniques, Ideas, Scandals & Crimes and all the things worth talking about in the realm the two host participate in. Jessica Perner and Scott Holloway are both artists exhibiting their work globally in the field of art that doesn't truly have a title but is widely accepted as "Dark Art".
In this episode we talk about the possible discovery of Rembrandts fingerprints in one of his paintings. There is also a photograph believed to be of Van Gogh but is now believed to be of his brother Theo. Also, a previously unknown Van Gogh drawing appears. Other subjects touched upon are: resizing a painting for my upcoming tarot card project, Odd Nerdrums painting technique, Jessica's show in Italy curated by Travis Louie. One thing we talked about That DIDN'T happen was me posting my recording of my friends and my first D&D game. I was going to fill space for November that I'm paying for with that episode but it seems they are going by a different time zone than me and it was the 1st of December before it happened here. Another time I guess. The PaintingLoft Podcast is about the "Dark Art" community. Chet Zar and Mike Correll interview the amazing Travis Louie, best known for his black and white, old fashioned portraits of both friendly and fiendish creatures. Louie discusses his career, beginning at the Pratt Institute in the late 80’s, early 90’s, through his eventual rise - producing artwork that stunned Robert Williams due to its photo-real quality (Louie is known for wearing a “loop” - magnifying glass - around his neck in order to validate the strokes in his work for critical gallery goers).
