America's Favorite Speed Painter, Dan Dunn, joins FTT for a fun and interesting talk about speed painting and how he got into performance art, comedy, caricature, painting and more! It all started with caricatures. When he began his career as a professional artist, Dan would draw at over 200 events per year – and anywhere from 12 to 20 people per hour for events. This was his Karate Kid, “Wax on, wax off” ninja training. Yeah… he can draw a face pretty fast! After many years as a caricaturist and illustrator, Dan was inspired by the work of the late, great, original speed painter, Denny Dent. Dan rented a storage warehouse, draped it in plastic and started throwing paint around. He rehearsed for 9 months before he had his first show – a stunning performance in Atlantic City that brought international attention to the classically trained painter. Dan's been painting and performing on stages and screens around the world with superstars like Taylor Swift, Jay Leno and Queen Latifah to name a few! Painter Ray Bonilla joins FTT for an awesome talk about painting, and painting aesthetics. The power of light and shadow, understanding values and strong design and much more! Raymond Bonilla is a nationally recognized illustrator and fine artist in Buffalo, NY. Raymond graduated from the State University in New York at Fredonia in 2005 with a degree in New Media and Illustration. He continued his studies at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco where he completed his Masters of Fine Art in 2009. He was awarded Best in Show in the Great Lakes Emerging Artist Competition, was a finalist in the Artists Magazine Annual Art Competition, has been awarded Gold Medals in advertising from both Society of Illustrators of New York and Los Angeles, and juried into the Communication Arts Illustration Annual. He currently lives in Buffalo, New York where he spends his time painting and teaching part-time at the State University of New York at Fredonia. William Wray made his living as a cartoonist who specialized in painted subjects, he spent many years coalescing a eclectic array of art styles, ultimately finding his voice in a contemporized reflection of traditional California regional painting that focus on humble subject matter rarely considered as fine art. Wray blends traditional skill sets of realism and the sheer energy of abstract expressionism in an ongoing evolution to find the balance between two seemingly unrelated styles. Wray has challenged himself to create a brand of realistic expressionism he hopes to use a bridge into the customarily circumspect contemporary art world. Fine Artist, Pavel Sokov joins Face the Truth this week for a great talk about his life as an artist, from student into a professional, starting off in illustration, then leaving illustration behind to pursue his passion and dream of making it as a fine artist! Pavel Sokov's work can be described as impressionistic realism. Specializing in oil painting, he began at the age of 7 and started selling commission portraits at 17. When he was 24 years old, Sokov was approached by Time Magazine to paint the cover of the Time's illustrious Person of the Year edition. Pavel Sokov's work has been featured in many publications and has won several awards, including Circle Foundation's Artist of the Year Award, Oil Painters of America's President's Award of Excellence,and NOAPS' Best Figure Painting Award. Great Scott! Another brilliant podcast in the bag!!! Scott Burdick, brings it hard with his years of experience in drawing, painting, writing and more! Looking for inspiration as an artist? Look no further!!! "Scott was born in Chicago, where his mother and father early on encouraged his interest in Art. "I spent a lot of time in hospitals as a child and remember my mother showing me how to transform simple shapes like circles, triangles, and squares into objects like planes, helicopters, and fish. It seemed such a magical thing and made spending so much time in casts and on crutches much more bearable." In high school, Scott began taking life-drawing classes at the American Academy of Art under the legendary Bill Parks. "Though I'd always loved drawing, it was Mr. Parks who filled me with the enthusiasm and discipline necessary to improve my skills. His love of painting and creative expression infected us all." After finishing the Academy, Scott continued his study at the Palette and Chisel Art club, where he met his wife, painter Susan Lyon. "It's a wonderful thing being able to paint together all the time and grow as artists together," Scott says. His ideas for paintings come from everywhere. "What makes a subject attractive to me are the same things that attract us all. The beauty of a young girl, the character of a weathered face, the solitude of a farm at sunset, or even the story itself behind someone or something that makes it interesting." Scott believes it is the job of the artist to recognize this when it happens, analyze why, and use his technical skills to convey the feeling to someone else. He notes that some paintings are as simple as stopping at the sight of something interesting, while others may take more time to research than to actually paint. Inquiring minds want to know. "Hollis Dunlap was born in 1977 in Northern Vermont in the USA. He became interested in drawing and painting the human figure around the age of 14. After studying painting in high school, he went on to study at the Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts, graduating in 1999 after painting and drawing the figure extensively for four years. While an undergraduate, he was the first painter to be awarded First Prize at New York's National Arts Club student exhibition for two consecutive years. Hollis was the recipient of the John Stobart Fellowship, awarded each year to a graduating student in recognition of outstanding work, and he is also a 2 time grantee of the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation. More recently, he has become interested in a mix of modern and classical elements in his work. He has had solo exhibitions in New York, Boston, San Francisco, and Miami, and currently paints and teaches painting in Southeastern CT." Are you kidding me? The Actual Brad Garrett? Yes the actual Brad Garrett joins me for a fun chat between two artists! Comedy, voice acting, drawing and painting, being bullied as a kid leading into comedy, and finally, who doesn't like waking up in the middle of their colonoscopy? Brad Garrett won three Emmy’s and a SAG Award for his role as “Robert Barone” on the iconic television series Everybody Loves Raymond. He was also nominated for an Emmy and SAG Award for his portrayal of The Great One in the telefilm Gleason. Garrett’s trademark voice has been heard in over 30 animated features, including the contemporary classics Finding Nemo, Ratatouille and Tangled. Garrett’s film credits include David Chase’s Not Fade Away as well as Music and Lyrics, Suicide Kings and Woody Allen’s Sweet and Lowdown. Garrett’s stand-up career has spanned over thirty years and he was one of the youngest comics ever to appear on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. In the late 80’s he opened for Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis, Jr; in Las Vegas, where he recently opened his own comedy club at the MGM Grand, performing to sold-out audiences. Garrett has performed on Broadway in Neil Simon’s The Odd Couple and was seen in the second season of the acclaimed cable television series Fargo. He also starred in the 2016 two-part season finale of Law and Order: SVU. The Gallery division of Simon and Schuster published Garrett’s autobiographical book When The Balls Drop in 2015.
