Hey, folks! It's time for a brand-new episode of Mousterpiece Cinema, and the first podcast that we recorded in 2019! (Not the first episode of the year, to be fair.) It's time for one of our sporadic deep-dives into the Walt Disney Treasures collections of DVDs, this time talking about Mickey Mouse in Black and White, Volume Two. These shorts, which premiered between 1928 and 1935, span everything from the days when Mickey Mouse and his sweetheart Minnie played music and danced around in synchronized movement to...the days when Mickey and Minnie...played music...and danced around...in synchronized movement. Yes, Josh and Scott find out the hard way that a lot of the Disney shorts of the early 1930s tread similar ground, but how many of them stand out nearly 90 years later? Are there any awkward depictions of racial stereotypes? And speaking of racial stereotypes, keep an ear out for some time-specific references to the Golden Globes and how excited your hosts are when a certain film about old-fashioned race relations wins big!

Hey, friends! On this episode of Mousterpiece Cinema, Josh and Gabe are going back in history with one of the Walt Disney Treasures box sets. Specifically, Josh and Gabe are going to learn about the early history of the first Disney theme park with their discussion of the 2-disc Disneyland, USA DVD set, covering four different episodes of the Walt Disney anthology TV show from the 1950s and 1960s. Just as you might expect with an anthology TV show, there's plenty of grab-bag topics to discuss here, from the placement of Song of the South in the first episode to how white audiences contrast with black performers and employees to...a rendition from "Bye Bye Birdie." But most importantly: Josh and Gabe talk more about the idea for Disney to have a streaming service encompassing its decades of films, shorts, and TV shows, and they need your help to get Disney's attention! Find out how in this episode!

For this week's episode of Mousterpiece Cinema, we're requiring all listeners to get their space gear in check, test their oxygen tanks, and prepare for a trip beyond Earth, beyond space, and maybe even beyond our solar system! But in case you're not ready for space travel just yet, you can still listen to the episode. This week, Josh and Gabe dig into another of the two-disc Walt Disney Treasures DVD sets, specifically the Tomorrow Land set, focusing on the way our 1950s society portrayed the future of space travel and science. Are Josh and Gabe able to embrace the optimistic futurism of this set or do they find it too quaint and dated? In short, are they ready to travel up (and at them/atom)? Or do they want to ponder their place in the dirt instead? Find out now!

Hey, folks! It's time for a brand-new, recurring DVD feature on Mousterpiece Cinema, as Josh and Gabe begin their long, slow wade through the world of the Walt Disney Treasures box set DVDs. This week, they start with the Mickey Mouse in Living Color, Volume Two set, covering Mickey's shorts from 1939 onward. (Had it not been for Josh's poor memory, they wouldn't be going backwards with poor Mickey in living color.) They're joined on the show by This Was TV contributor Anthony Strand, as the trio discuss Mickey's shift from being a character to being an icon, Pluto's prominence in the shorts, and how sacrilegious it is to show Mickey Mouse playing a Mortal Kombat-style video game about Dopey the Dwarf. Check it out!

(((HEADPHONES STRONGLY RECOMMENDED))) RATED PG FOR MILD ADULT LANGUAGE This week in the Mouse Lounge: A full docket of Disney News from our departments Entertainment (including a GREAT guest correspondent!), Theme Parks East, Theme Parks West, and Business. Each week in From the Vault we sample a clip from a classic Disney film, short, television or radio program, or Disneyland Record. Walt may not have been an auto aficionado; practical transportation (with the notable exception of a backyard train) was his moteris operandi. He did realize however that car junkies and other addled nitwits that occupy the road make for some great comedic and educational material. From 1950, we take in the entirety of Motor Mania. Now like several weeks ago with the short, Reason and Emotion this cartoon got the Ludwig von Drake treatment for the Wonderful World of Color anthology series. The difference however, is that the former was a wartime cartoon, and was edited for content when it was presented to television audiences. Motor Mania on the other hand is plain old Goofy silliness and the narration remains intact. That said, the delivery of the narration is much funnier with Ludwig, so that version is featured on the podcast. Next up you'll hear a segment from the classic 1970 Dad, Can I Borrow the Car? If you’re at a computer, log into the multimedia section of mouselounge.com where I have posted the script from this sequence and screen captures as well. Plus, without cheating (Google or Wiki, etc.), see if you can pick out who's narrating the short and who's voice is in the training film sequence. If you do get it, it'll be just barely. Each week we present a high definition ride-through from a Disney Park East and a Disney Park West. This week in Disney Parks West, we present our featured attraction; Autopia. (Just kidding!) Actually, what better way to exemplify a road trip than with one of the first loonies on the road, Mr. Toad on Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. From the Disney Family Museum; Since The Walt Disney Company has recently reacquired the rights to Oswald the Lucky Rabbit and announced a December release of Oswald shorts on Wave VII of the Walt Disney Treasures series, hear in Walt's own words how he lost the character and what happened to him. From Disney Parks East, we head over to Epcot and Futureworld and take a wild ride of our own, on Test Track. Each week we feature a unique take on Disney music. On this podcast, enjoy a special Mouse Lounge Mix from the movies, with fantastic references to cars and their drivers. This is a real hoot! Enjoy!
