In this episode, we're savoring the drama and intrigue of Emma, Volume Two, Chapters 9 through 18. The aftermath of the Cole's party has Emma rehashing every social triumph and misstep, from her jealousy over Jane Fairfax's piano skills to her playful gossip with Frank Churchill about the mysterious pianoforte.  Meanwhile, Mrs. Elton makes her grand entrance into Highbury society, leaving Emma unimpressed but the rest of the town charmed. Between witty banter, romantic musings, and subtle moments of humor (looking at you, Mr. Knightley), these chapters are packed with Austen's signature blend of sharp social commentary and entertaining drama.  As a reminder, we've historically shared these “big book readalong” recap series in our patreon community, but to celebrate five years of podcasting, we're sharing it on the public feed! There is understandable frustration at the failure to release volume 2 of the Smith Report dealing with the Mar-A-Lago documents case, but we are able to construct strong surmises about what is in that volume based on already available material. Harry checks in again with Marcy Wheeler, whose blog, emptywheel.net, consistently presents the most in-depth and comprehensive accounts of the public record. Through a methodical scrutiny of documents that have come to light in various ways – including a FOIA request from Donald Trump that produced 60 important emails and other documentary records – we can make a detailed sketch of much of the information that Smith likely passed along to Merrick Garland. Critically, some of the information bears on the qualifications for FBI director of Kash Patel, who asserted the 5th Amendment when called to testify about his claim that Trump had declassified the records he took away. Listeners' alert: some of the discussion is fairly microscopic but that's because some of the known information is quite detailed.Read Marcy's blog: https://www.emptywheel.net/2025/01/19/found-dozens-of-damning-documents-about-trumps-hoarding-of-classified-documents/See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Prosecuting Donald Trump

While this podcast's name has changed, this week's episode revolves around all things prosecuting Donald Trump. After a detailed review of Judge Juan Merchan's reasoning and limitations for sentencing the president-elect after his New York criminal conviction, veteran prosecutors Andrew Weissmann and Mary McCord wind through the barrage of motions in Florida to block the release of both volumes of Special Counsel Jack Smith's final report. After underscoring why Volume Two-- concerning the now dismissed classified documents case-- is still under wraps, they dig into the finer points of Volume One, released to the public at 1:00 a.m. Tuesday morning. This first volume lays out the facts and the law as it relates to Trump's DC election interference case which has also been dismissed, though Smith writes, "but for Mr. Trump's election and imminent return to the Presidency, the Office assessed that the admissible evidence was sufficient to obtain and sustain a conviction at trial."Further reading: Here is Volume One of Jack Smith's final report.Want to listen to this show without ads? Think the holiday season is all cheer and twinkling lights? Think again. This week, Woody and Tyler pull back the curtain on even darker legends and terrifying creatures that have haunted Christmas traditions for centuries. From the windswept shores of Scotland to the snow-covered peaks of Iceland, we're diving headfirst into holiday horrors you've never heard before. Knucklavee – the skinless, horse-like nightmare of the Orkney Islands that terrorizes with its grotesque form. Habergeiß – Bavaria's vampiric goat-woman that's as bloodthirsty as she is chilling. Mari Lwyd – a ghostly, horse-skulled figure from Wales that challenges you to a rhyming duel…at your front door. Hans Trapp – the scarecrow-like German legend who stalks the wicked with sinister intent. And that's just the beginning. Woody and Tyler also unearth the dark origins of The Nutcracker—a tale far more nightmarish than the ballet suggests. Plus, you'll meet Grýla, Iceland's infamous ogress who feasts on naughty children, and the mischievous Kallikantzaroi from the Balkans, who emerge each year to wreak havoc, and MANY MORE. Wake Wood (2009), The Wind (2018), Apostle (2018) Folk horror has its roots in tales of witches and paganism, stretching back centuries. In cinema, the term "folk horror" was first coined by Rod Cooper in Kine Weekly to describe the 1971 classic Blood on Satan's Claw. However, the themes that define folk horror—witchcraft, ancient rituals, and the eerie power of nature—have been present since the earliest days of film. A prime example is Benjamin Christensen's Häxan (1922), which delves into witchcraft and age-old rites. Regardless of its origins or definitions, folk horror has endured over time, weaving its way through the history of cinema. In recent decades, the genre has experienced a remarkable resurgence, not just in the United States but globally. This renewed interest may owe much to Kier-La Janisse's expansive 2021 documentary, Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched, which shone a spotlight on the subgenre and sparked widespread conversation. With the recent release of Volume Two of Severin's All the Haunts Be Ours box sets, now seems the perfect time to explore some of the standout modern folk horror films from the past two decades. So, venture with us into the remote villages, pagan rites, and shadowy woods where all the horrors sit waiting for you in the dark corners where people rarely go.  Films mentioned in this episode: Abigail (2024), Alucarda (1977), Apostle (2018), Birth/Re-birth (2023), Blood on Satan's Claw (1971), Cuckoo (2024), Dracula (2006), Five Nights at Freddy's (2023), Flesh and the Fiends (1960), Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024), Isolation (2005), Pet Sematary (1989), Rosemary's Baby (1968), Underworld (2003), Wake Wood (2009), The Wicker Man (1973), The Wind (2018), Witchfinder General (1968), Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched (2021), Zombie (1979)
