Cape Fear is back, Apple TV's new 10-episode Cape Fear series stars Javier Bardem as Max Cady, and we're breaking down the first two episodes. Meaghan is joined by Arthur (filling in for Shirin) to dig into the new Cape Fear adaptation on Apple TV, starring Javier Bardem, Amy Adams, and Patrick Wilson. We trace it back to John D. MacDonald's 1957 novel The Executioners and compare this version to the 1962 film (Gregory Peck, Robert Mitchum) and the famous 1991 remake (Robert De Niro, Nick Nolte, Jessica Lange, Juliette Lewis). Cape Fear's long road from novel to Apple TV Cape Fear started life as The Executioners, a 1957 novel by John D. MacDonald (also known for the Travis McGee series). It's been adapted three times now: the 1962 film with Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum, the 1991 remake with Robert De Niro and Nick Nolte, and now this 10-episode Apple TV series. At just over 200 pages, the source novel is short, meaning the new miniseries has a lot of room to expand the story. Javier Bardem's Max Cady, how he compares Bardem takes over a role previously played by Robert Mitchum (1962) and Robert De Niro (1991), both iconic, very different takes on the character. We talk about how unsettling his stillness is, and how the show keeps us guessing about whether Max Cady is actually guilty of the murder for which he was convicted. In this version, Max Cady's conviction (for the murder of his wife and unborn child) gets overturned after a confession surfaces, setting up a very different starting point than previous adaptations. Amy Adams and Patrick Wilson as the Bowdens Amy Adams plays Anna Bowden, the defense attorney from Max Cady's original trial, a gender-swapped twist on the classic "Sam Bowden" role. Patrick Wilson plays Tom Bowden, the prosecutor in that same case, now Anna's husband. We dig into the implication that Anna and Tom may have colluded during the original trial, and what that could mean once the truth comes out. The Bowden kids: Natalie and Zack Natalie Bowden, played by Lily Collias, is Anna's daughter from a previous relationship, and seemingly the "responsible" sibling. Zack Bowden, played by Joe Anders, is dealing with a troubling backstory and increasingly disturbing behavior, including a deeply unsettling moment involving self-harm. We talk about whether Max Cady is somehow connected to what's happening with Zack, or whether it's something else entirely. The SJLP subplot and our early theories Anna works for the Savannah Justice League Project (SJLP), an organization focused on freeing the wrongfully convicted — alongside her business partner, Noa Toussaint. A separate wrongful-conviction case tied to the SJLP takes a dark and suspicious turn almost immediately after Max Cady is released. We share our early predictions for where the rest of the season is headed, including whether Max Cady is guilty, innocent, or something murkier. What's next Cape Fear airs new episodes weekly on Apple TV, with the finale on July 31. We'll be back with a full Cape Fear season recap once it wraps. PAM PAM PAM PAM, PAM PAM PAM PAM!!!
O tym, a także m.in. o finale "Znajomych i sąsiadów", filmie "Masters of the Universe" i "Pełna przyjemność gwarantowana", dyskutujemy w nowym odcinku podcastu "O serialach".
Jahrhunderts.

Film producer Jason Solomons and Guardian columnist Zoe Williams join Tom Sutcliffe to discuss Steven Spielberg's Disclosure Day – a film which looks at whether aliens are really out there. John D. MacDonald's psychological thriller The Executioners has inspired two Cape Fear films and now there's a 10-part TV series starring Amy Adams and Javier Bardem. Jason and Zoe give their verdicts. They also talk about M. C. Escher's major exhibition at Somerset House. Famous for drawing optical illusions, impossible buildings, and endless patterns, the Dutch artist's work has inspired film scenes in Labyrinth and Christopher Nolan's Inception. Plus we will be revealing the winners of the Women's Prize for Fiction and Non-Fiction.Presenter: Tom Sutcliffe Producer: Claire Bartleet
Send us Fan MailWe're two episodes into Apple TV+'s new adaptation of Cape Fear, and we have some thoughts. The series, which dropped its first two episodes on June 5th, stars Javier Bardem as Max Cady, Amy Adams as attorney Anna Bowden, and Patrick Wilson as her husband Tom — a family now living under the shadow of a man they may have wronged. Scorsese and Spielberg are both on board as executive producers, which raises the bar considerably. We came in with full knowledge of the source material. Mike read John D. McDonald's original novel, and both films — the 1962 version with Robert Mitchum and Gregory Peck, and Scorsese's 1991 remake with Robert De Niro and Nick Nolte — are part of the conversation throughout. What we were hoping to see is a reimagining that earns its place alongside those films. What we got, at least in these first two episodes, is something we're still trying to make sense of.The issues start early. Javier Bardem's portrayal of Max Cady lacks the menace that both Mitchum and De Niro brought to the role in very different ways. His introduction at the fundraiser gala — rambling speech, handed the microphone without hesitation, no security in sight — was hard to take seriously. The violence skews gratuitous in a way that feels less like intensity and more like a substitute for it. There are subplots involving the teenage son, an online chat that's clearly not what it seems, and a mysterious masked figure in a green trench coat that we couldn't make heads or tails of. The series also appears to be steering toward a version of events where Max Cady may actually be innocent — which, if true, is a significant departure from everything that makes this story work.We also noticed an Easter egg worth mentioning: Wesley Strick, who wrote the screenplay for the '91 film, shows up in a cameo as an ER doctor. We're essentially split after two episodes — one of us is out, the other is holding on to see what episode three brings. We'll check in again if the series turns things around — and if you don't see another Cape Fear episode on the channel, that's probably your answer. If you've seen the films, read the book, or are watching the series yourself, we want to hear from you — especially if you're a Javier Bardem fan and think he's bringing something to the role we're not seeing yet.Support the showOh Brother Podcast:Support the Show! Victor kicks off a week-to-week deep dive into Cape Fear, the new Apple TV+ adaptation from producer Nick Antosca (executive produced by Scorsese and Spielberg). Before bringing in co-host Sona, Victor walks through the full history of the source material — from the 1957 novel and the 1962 Hitchcock-adjacent adaptation, through Scorsese's celebrated 1991 film, all the way to this new ten-episode series. The conversation covers what makes this version distinct: a new crime at the center of Max Cady's imprisonment, a defense attorney protagonist played by Amy Adams who may have a far more complicated history with Cady than anyone knows, and a modern-day anxiety layer involving home security systems, online manipulation, and the very real fear that someone is already inside your house. Javier Bardem's magnetic, unsettling performance as Max Cady is a major topic, as is whether the show's relentless, uncut dread — and its considerable gore — will sustain itself over a full ten-episode run. Sona joins to share her firsthand perspective on the accuracy of the innocence project storyline, weigh in on the performances, discuss the show's overwhelming sense of dread, and debate the many dangling mysteries of episodes one and two — including who (or what) is living in the Bowden house, what really happened between Anna and Max during the trial, and just how many secrets this family is hiding. The episode closes with a recommendation for Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed, a new Tatiana Maslany thriller that may be airing in parallel. Cape Fear, based on a 1957 novel by John D. MacDonald, already has inspired two intense films about a man who, recently released from prison, goes on to terrorize his former attorney. Now there's a new 10-part miniseries from Apple TV, which premieres its first two episodes June 5. Starring Javier Bardem, Amy Adams and Patrick WilsonMax Cady, a vicious and unreformed ex-convict, is released from prison and sets about taking revenge on Tom and Anna Bowden, the married couple who represented him 17 years earlier in court, by using his knowledge of the law to evade punishment.Hosted on Ausha. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week we're grabbing our crowns, polishing our tap shoes, and heading to Mount Rose, Minnesota, for a review of Drop Dead Gorgeous, the 1999 dark comedy mockumentary where a teen beauty pageant turns into sabotage, scandal, suspicious accidents, and small-town chaos. Don, Jon, and Ken talk about the film's stacked cast, including Kirsten Dunst, Kirstie Alley, Allison Janney, Ellen Barkin, Denise Richards, Brittany Murphy, Amy Adams, and Will Sasso. They dig into the mockumentary style, over-the-top Minnesota accents, cult classic status, and whether the comedy still works today. From exploding threshers and “bad wiring” to pageant politics, creepy judges, and Allison Janney stealing scenes, the guys break down the good, the bad, and the absurd before wrapping things up with trivia, plenty of banter, and their final ratings.
More moms in space for May! Arrival may be the movie that split your hosts the most deeply: Dan loves it, Ana can't forgive the movie for confusing linguists with translators, among other things. This movie has a gorgeous soundtrack, a luminous performance from Amy Adams, and a lot of international relations. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Paul and Amy make first contact with Denis Villeneuve's quietly mind-bending sci-fi about language, time, and the choices that shape a life. They trace the film's journey from Ted Chiang's Story of Your Life to the screen, unpacking how screenwriter Eric Heisserer turned a cerebral short story into a $200M hit and why Amy Adams' performance still feels criminally underrated a decade later. That Show Hasn't Been Funny In Years: an SNL podcast on Radio Misfits
Nick revisits one of Kate McKinnon's strangest and most lovable creations on Saturday Night Live, Barbara DeDrew from Whiskers R We. The fake cat adoption commercials became instant fan favorites between 2014 and 2023, built around Barbara's oddball delivery, heartfelt devotion to her cats, and the unpredictable chaos of live kittens wandering around the set. Nick plays several of the sketches and talks about how the character came together and why it worked so well. The bits featured a parade of game guest hosts, including Charlize Theron, Amy Adams, Reese Witherspoon, Kristen Wiig, Tiffany Haddish, and Billie Eilish, all trying to keep a straight face while McKinnon committed completely to the madness. It's a funny look back at a character that was weird in the best way and a reminder of just how fearless McKinnon was during her run on SNL. [Ep 166]

"Strange that the victim had only one testicle stuffed in his mouth. I believe they usually come in pairs." It's the premiere of season eight of Movies That Made Us Gay, and we invited over the director of "Psycho Beach Party," Bob King, to talk about its twenty-sixth anniversary. Part 60s surf movie, part slasher, and part Hitchcock thriller - we love this movie. From the brilliant mind of the icon Charles Busch, this wacky love letter to cult cinema still holds up after all of these years. Bob breaks it all down for us, from casting memories like finding breakout talent the likes of Lauren Ambrose and Amy Adams, to iconic filming locations along Malibu Beach. "Pyscho Beach Party" is camp, queer joy, and we're so happy to bring this conversation to you for our Season 8 premiere.
