Movies are the most powerful teaching tool in our culture. In the 60s and 70s, a small group of studios led the West by the nose into moral revolution — and the Academy Awards continue to reward films romanticizing evil. But Americans' embrace of moral relativism has flatlined in the past 10–15 years. Hollywood has lost its grip on the American mind — and now there is a great opportunity for independent Christian filmmakers. Will we seize it?

The Scariest Things

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 12, 2026 43:19

Break out the spyglass! It’s time to forecast what is coming in 2026 We’ve got 2025 in the rear view window, and Hollywood has determined to not just relegate horror movies into the fall/Halloween schedule. Springtime apparently is a good time to have a big fear injection. So, we had to get the word out on movies you can anticipate coming to a theater near you! Admittedly, we’re out a little late this year. But, I would suggest we are just in time! Surprisingly, there are a lot of horror movies that are being released in late March. It also happens to be the eve of when many of the big genre film festivals get rolling. Sundance has just completed. SXSW is right on us now. Overlook is around the corner. So is Panic Fest. With these festivals, it sets the table for what you all can expect to come out this year. It becomes a bit of a guessing game for those of us who attend these festivals to predict what films are going to be on the schedule. Horror has proven to be profitable in what used to be a dead period for box office. Already, both Iron Lung ($50 million on a $3 million budget) and Send Help ($92 Million) opened up strong in January, traditionally the dumping ground for cast-off studio films. With the tremendous profitability and critical response to last year’s crop of films, we will see what will become this year’s banner carrier. My guess? Scream 7. There isn’t a studio backed big prestige movie like Sinners or Weapons this year, but I could very easily see a Neve Campbell led Scream 7 into a $300 million earner, much like Final Destinations: Bloodline from last year. If Scream 7 lives up to its potential, it could fly past that number. I don’t think that the effect of last year’s horror boom will be felt until next year’s crop. The studios didn’t have enough time to understand the influence until the season largely wrapped in October, well after prduction had wrapped for most films getting released for 2026. A Good Year for Indie Films? The indie horror films are in abundance this year. SXSW has a huge roster of genre films. Overlook just announced their roster, and so has Panic Fest. Usually there is a lot of overlap, but not so much this year. That suggests a wide variety and a lot of options out there. An that’s not taking into account the large Summer and Fall festivals like Frightfest, Popcorn Frights, and Screamfest. As usual, there will be films that we didn’t see coming because they come with zero fanfare, but end up surprising us with original storytelling or raw savagery. Better yet… both! We always summarize what we did from the previous year, and I think we actually did pretty well in our selections for 2025. You can check out last year’s predictions HERE. Will 2026 be as solid for Scariest Things selections? Listen in, and remember this come the end of the year! Episode 209: Looking Forward to 2026 Note… we announced this one episode off. Sarah and Diana welcome special guest Chesney for a lively, late-night chat about Pixar's “Elio.” We talk through the film's setup, Aunt Olga's standout moments, and why the movie's heart sits in vulnerability, connection, and the choice to put family first. Along the way, we unpack the “six seven” slang phenomenon, call out favorite scenes, and debate where “Elio” lands in the modern Disney lineup. 00:00 — Welcome back and intros: Sarah, Diana, and our guest Chesney03:30 — What is “six seven”? Brain-rot slang 10107:50 — “Leo… Elio?” Kicking off the movie talk09:00 — Elio's setup: orphaned kid, Aunt Olga, and a space-obsessed heart11:10 — First reactions from the crew15:10 — Real-life parenting and why “it's okay to be sad” matters16:25 — Abduction to the stars and the “leader of Earth” mix-up17:20 — Glaudon vs. Elio: loneliness, validation, and new friendship22:00 — Where the plot felt thin (grief thread, the eyepatch, the clone reveal)29:00 — “If you could be ‘abducted' anywhere?” A fun detour to libraries and islands38:15 — Stay in space or go home? Family, identity, and the final choice41:00 — Casting notes and small music wins42:15 — Final thoughts and rewatch testVulnerability is the emotional core. Aunt Olga's honesty gives the film its most human beat and frames Elio's choice at the end.Elio and Glaudon mirror each other. Both are craving connection, showing that you can't outrun loneliness by changing locations.Good vibes, light lift. The movie is easy to watch and safe for multitasking, but some threads (grief, the clone twist, the eyepatch) feel underdeveloped.A missed opportunity for a bolder ending. Letting Aunt Olga become an official liaison alongside Elio could have set up a stronger sequel path. Not a Hall of Famer, but not a flop. It lands somewhere in the middle for our panel.“Hello, hello, hello and welcome… magical pixie dust coated Disney fans.” “It's okay to be sad.” “So Elio gets abducted… and they think he's the leader of the universe.” “It was not a terrible movie… It was not the best movie.” On “six seven”: “The term… all these kids are saying… actually means nothing.” Enjoyed the episode? On this Disney Moms Gone Wrong episode, Sarah and the crew invite Riley to break down Disney's Tangled with equal parts chaos and heart. We talk real-life logistics of 70 feet of magical hair, why Flynn Rider still works on parents as much as kids, and how the soundtrack holds up. Most of all, we dig into the film's bigger ideas about leaving toxic environments, rediscovering identity after motherhood, and giving yourself permission to want more than survival. 00:00 Welcome back and cold open04:30 Why Riley picked Tangled and what we're hoping to revisit from it 05:00 Quick plot recap for newcomers 08:05 Mother Gothel's gaslighting and the “Mother Knows Best” moment we all sing anyway 09:10 Birthdays, lanterns, and how manipulation looks in a kids movie 16:38 Magical hair care talk and the case for industrial-strength dry shampoo 18:23 The Flynn Rider effect and how Disney literally designed him to be irresistible 22:14 “At Last I See the Light” love and why Tangled's songs still hit 23:07 Tangled vs Frozen and why one overshadowed the other in the moment 26:24 Who we'd take out for a night on the town, and why the answer might worry you a little 32:25 What kids can take from Tangled about agency and leaving harmful situations 33:27 Mom identity check in: losing yourself and getting the pieces back Tangled is fun and messy, but it also gives families an easy doorway to talk about control, boundaries, and safety.Mother Gothel is a clean example of manipulation that kids can recognize when we name it.Flynn Rider wasn't an accident. Disney built a character meant to charm adults and kids, and it works. The soundtrack carries emotional weight that helps kids connect theme to feeling. For parents, Rapunzel's journey mirrors the work of rediscovering who you are outside of roles and routines. “Let's talk about this 70 feet of magical hair. Who's brushing it and washing it?” “That is a top Disney song. ‘At Last I See the Light,' every time.” “Disney, how do you give us a criminal we would all text back?” “There's a theme of finding yourself and leaving toxic environments.” “You become what people tell you you are. Wait, that's not mine. Let me navigate that myself.” If you enjoyed this episode, follow and subscribe so you never miss a drop. Leave a rating and review to help more parents find the show. Sophie chimes in and says it doesn't matter what The Times thinks. Nice thought, but no one's buying it.Cut to fisherman Cam, who runs Easton's Fish Market. He's short-staffed but making it work. The review comes in — four stars! Sophie is promoted to sous-chef.She calls her sister to share the big news, but things aren't great back home. Their family restaurant is bleeding money, and her sister is ready to sell. Sophie says she'll think about it. Abigail suggests she come back, help out, and stick around for the 4th of July.Sophie asks for time off. It doesn't go well. She's never asked before, but three weeks turns into just ten days. When she arrives, she's horrified to find… frozen fish! She heads to the docks for fresh fish, promptly falls into a net, and gets rescued by Cam. Surprise — they already know each other. They even kissed back in 7th grade. Banter sparks, and Sophie goes on her way.Back at the restaurant, tensions rise between the sisters. Abigail's been grinding to keep the place alive, and Sophie swoops in buying pricey fish like that's the magic fix.Meanwhile, Sophie keeps crossing paths with Cam. A local blogger spreads the word that a big-city chef is back in town, which makes Sophie's boss furious. The sisters start interviewing potential managers. One guy is a perfect fit — but before he can commit, Cam (unknowingly) offers him a better-paying job. Perfect Cam means no harm, but Sophie's frustrated.Later, she apologizes, and sparks fly. They finally kiss. The next day, she cooks him dinner, sharing her dreams. Her boss wants her to cook for someone opening a restaurant in Vegas — a chance that could change her career. When Sophie leans in for another kiss, Cam pulls back. He doesn't want to stand in the way of her dreams. The Vegas dinner starts rocky, but Sophie nails it. She's offered the head chef role.Just as she's ready to rush out of town, she can't find Cam — until she learns he's been secretly framing her old photos. What a guy. They say their goodbyes. But when Sophie's about to board the helicopter, she can't go through with it. She quits. She chooses to stay, help run the now-thriving family restaurant, and, of course, be with Cam.She tells her family, finds Cam, and they seal it with some very good kisses.

It's Tuesday, March 11th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Kevin Swanson Supreme Court takes case of Christian counselor vs. transgenderism The U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to hear a Colorado case of a counselor who has been cited for counseling clients under 18 about a Biblically sound position on homosexuality and transgenderism.   Alliance Defending Freedom will argue that the Colorado law violates counselor Kaley Chiles' freedom of speech. Colorado law currently allows counseling conversations that aim to steer young people towards transgenderism, but prohibits conversations that aim to help them to remain content with their God-given gender. Thus far, 26 out of 50 U.S. states have endorsed body-mutilating surgeries for children between the ages of 13 and 17. Thousand citizens and militants killed by Syrian government France 24 reports as many as a thousand citizens and militants have been killed by supporters of the new Syrian government over the last few days. Execution style murders are being conducted in the Alawite State of Northwest Syria, and some of the victims are Christians.   Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa denounced the violence. Al-SHARAA (through a translator): “Anyone who commits violence against civilians will be held accountable. It is our duty to protect our compatriots.” Menacing warships from Russia, China, and Iran Eastern nations are forming closer military and political alliances as warships from Russia, China, and Iran initiated joint exercises on Monday in the Gulf of Oman. This is the fifth such drill since 2019.  Dutch reject one true God, turning to false Muslim god Religious faith is declining in the Netherlands.  A recent survey found only 13% of the Dutch consider themselves Protestant, and only 4% attend Protestant churches. That compares to 6% of the Dutch aligned with the Muslim religion. The study discovered that Protestants are losing adherents by a rate of 3% every decade, while the Muslims are increasing by a rate of 1% every ten years. Swiss Evangelicals drop from 34% to 3% Another survey conducted in Switzerland found only 3% of the population attend an Evangelical church. And the Evangelical population has dropped off to 19.5% of the population, down from 34% in the year 2000. Over the same period of time, the Muslim population increased from 3.6% to 6.0%. The rate of Protestants leaving the Swiss churches has topped 1.6% per year. Catholics are leaving the church at the rate of 1.2% per year. The warning from Romans 11:20 to be humble is appropriate for the Gentile nations: “Because of unbelief [the branches] were broken off, and you stand by faith. Do not be haughty, but fear. For if God did not spare the natural branches, He may not spare you either.”  Wyoming Gov. cuts property tax 25% and bans transgender nonsense Wyoming Republican Governor Mark Gordon signed several bills mirroring the Trump agenda over the last week.   He signed a bill cutting property tax by 25%, and another bill banning government programs which favor or disfavor people on the basis of religion, race, or sex. John MacArthur: “I'm on my last lap.” Pastor John MacArthur appeared on video at his Shepherd's Conference last week. The 85-year-old pastor of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California and the voice of the Grace to You radio ministry has undergone three heart surgeries and lung surgery over the last several months. He noted that he's slowly recovering strength after the ordeal. He closed his address with these words. MacARTHUR:  “I realize I'm on the last lap. That takes on a new meaning when you know you're on the short end of the candle. But I am all thanks and praise to God for everything He's allowed me to be a part of and everything He's accomplished by His Word in these years of ministry. Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord, Jesus Christ.” MovieGuide affirmed best pro-family movies and actors The 2025 pro-family MovieGuide annual awards were announced last week.
