Cinematographer Donald A. Morgan, ASC has won 10 Emmys and is nominated this year for three more for his work on Netflix's The Upshaws, Fox's Last Man Standing, and ABC's The Conners. Like a few cinematographers, Donald had some experience studying architecture in college, which enabled him to take two dimensional drawings and visualize them in three dimensions. He also thought he'd be a professional baseball player or a musician- his father was a musician who played in Cab Calloway's band, so Donald grew up around musicians and stages. By his mid-20's he had a job working at KTTV in Los Angeles in the mailroom while trying to make it with his own band in the 1970's, and was soon offered a position in the lighting department. He found his experience reading architectural plans made it easy to understand electrical schematics. Donald worked on the lighting crews for several different shows produced by the legendary Norman Lear, such as Good Times, The Jeffersons, and Diff'rent Strokes, plus many other shows. Donald knew working on shows produced by Lear were progressive and groundbreaking for the time, telling stories about people of color like himself, and Lear made it a point to hire a diverse workforce for his shows. Soon, Donald was offered a union job as a DP on two shows on the Universal lot- Silver Spoons and Gloria. Donald was able to learn more about cinematography while working on the Universal lot by visiting several different film stages and making notes on how different DPs worked. Working on three camera shows, the whole set can be lit before there's any blocking, because typically, comedies use very high-key lighting. Donald notes where the walls and doors are, and then most sets can be lit with standard three point lighting.  For The Conners, as the show becomes a bit darker, Donald subtly shades the room for more drama, and brightens the room as the mood lightens. Most multi-camera shows use three to four fixed cameras, and dolly in for shots rather than just panning. Donald also uses a jib arm camera on the show Last Man Standing, a technique he began using back on Home Improvement. The jib arm came into use on Home Improvement because the character Mr. Wilson, Tim Allen's neighbor, was never seen over the fence, and the camera crew had to get creative with how to shoot those scenes. Donald enjoys working on multi-camera studio shows because it keeps him local, and he's been able to spend more time with his family with three weeks on and one week off, with the longest days about 10-12 hours. He tries to keep the work as creative as possible, always watching and learning about new techniques he can bring to the shows he shoots. Though Donald is very experienced with shooting multi-camera shows, he will often shoot single-camera short films to keep his skills fresh. You can see Donald A. Morgan's work: https://vimeo.com/12993063 You can watch The Upshaws on Netflix and find episodes of The Conners and Last Man Standing on Hulu. Also today's sponsor is Indeed.com/Standup Bob Saget and I go way back and I was really happy to have him join me. He is one of the best of all time. Listen to his podcast and see him live. Here is is official bio: Yes, Bob Saget has starred in many successful television shows, including two of the most family-friendly shows network TV has ever produced (Full House and Americas Funniest Home Videos) but he's also an out of his mind, Grammy-nominated standup comedian for over thirty years. From his latest Amazon special, Zero to Sixty, to his HBO special That Ain't Right to his scene-stealing cameos in Entourage, and The Aristocrats, it's always effective as Saget embraces his mischievous side. From directing MGM's cult favorite feature film Dirty Work, to directing and producing the highly acclaimed ABC television movie, For Hope, to starring in the critically acclaimed, Paul Weitz off-Broadway play, Privilege, to starring on Broadway in the Tony Award winning The Drowsy Chaperone, Bob Saget shows no signs of stopping. Ever. In 2007 came the hugely successful DVD release of Farce of the Penguins, an R-rated comedy/documentary/love story, that he voiced-over, wrote, directed, and produced, with producer David Permut. And then came the hit NBC quiz show 1 VS 100, where Bob ad-libbed his way through the one-hour prime time format. In 2008, The Comedy Central Roast of Bob Saget premiered to the second highest ratings of all TV that night, second only to the Olympics. For many years now, Bob has been a proud board member of the Scleroderma Research Foundation. He co-produces and hosts "Cool Comedy Hot Cuisine" fundraising events in Los Angeles, New York, Las Vegas and San Francisco. To date, they have raised over 53 million dollars for the SRF going directly to research to cure this disease. Bob was seen several times reprising the role of “Himself” on HBO's hit series Entourage as well as a cameo in the film. He also starred in his own documentary comedy series for A&E titled, Strange Days with Bob Saget, an exploration of unusual subcultures in America. In 2014, Bob completed his first Australian theater tour visiting Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth. Bob continued touring, playing to sold out audiences in theaters and universities across North America and in 2012 he hosted the Montreal Comedy Festival's first live 90 minute JFL XXX TV show which continues to air across Canada on The Movie Network. His 2013 one-hour stand-up special, That's What I'm Talkin' About, was nominated for a 2014 Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album. The special was filmed at The Moore Theatre in Seattle, premiered on Showtime in May 2013 and is now available on multiple platforms, both as a comedy album and special. Bob's first book is a New York Times Best Seller - DIRTY DADDY was released on April 8, 2014 to critical acclaim with Vanity Fair calling it, “Hilarious and at times heartbreaking.” The book is also available as an audio book, recorded by Bob. In January 2016, Bob finished a very fulfilling and successful 9-week run on Broadway in the Tony-nominated play, Hand To God, playing the part of a Lutheran minister, Pastor Greg. That year he also co-starred in the film, A Stand Up Guy and began his six season run on the hit Netflix series, Fuller House which ended shooting in 2020. In 2018, Bob made his London performance debut at the Leicester Square Theatre, and can't wait to return to perform there when the times allow. Bob's newest hour-long stand-up special, Zero To Sixty, was shot in Brooklyn at The Williamsburg Hall of Music in May 2017. Zero To Sixty premiered worldwide on November 14, 2017 on multiple digital platforms including Amazon Prime, iTunes, Comcast, DirecTV, and many others. It's also available as a comedy album including vinyl LPs as well as streaming and downloads for all forms. On April 23, 2019, Bob's independent film, Benjamin, was released as the first Redbox Original release and it is also available on many streaming platforms. Bob directed and starred with an amazing ensemble cast: Rob Corddry, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Kevin Pollak, Cheri Oteri, Dave Foley, Max Burkholder, Clara Mamet, David Hull, Jonny Weston, and Peri Gilpin. The film was produced by Nicholas Tabarrok. In this original dark comedy, Ed (Bob Saget), reluctantly calls together an oddball assortment of friends and family to intervene on the supposed drug habit of his 15-year-old son, Benjamin (Max Burkholder). What quickly follows is a night of finger-pointing, petty thievery, adulterous backstabbing, and a seesaw of crooked emotional revelations — all leading to the misguided but sincere attempt to heal this dysfunctional family. In 2019, Bob hosted the new CMT TV series, Nashville Squares.. On April 20, 2020, Bob launched his podcast, Bob Saget's Here For You, now at 100 episodes, featuring Bob's one of a kind stream of consciousness storytelling and real and honest conversations with amazing guests, including: Tiffany Haddish, Jason Sudeikis, Whoopi Goldberg, Norman Lear, Regina Hall, Bill Burr, John Mayer, Candace Cameron Bure, Cedric the Entertainer, John Stamos, Jake Tapper, Nikki Glaser, Jon Hamm and Bob Newhart. Last fall, Bob performed at Dave Chappelle's Summer Camp, which he just did again in May, 2021, appeared on the hit Fox TV show I Can See Your Voice, and performed as Squiggly Monster on The Masked Singer. Bob just wrapped shooting the dark comedy film, Blue Iguana, in the Cayman Islands, alongside Joel David Moore, Jason Jones, Carly Chaikin, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Chantel Riley, and Iggy Pop. It was directed by Jeremey LaLonde and Produced by Nicholas Tabarrok. The story involves a dying man (Pop) who will leave his entitled children his fortune only if they can spend the weekend together in his Cayman Islands home. They end up trying to murder one of their siblings in order to get his share of the fortune. Bob is overjoyed to be back on his stand-up tour with a new hour plus of material with dates scheduled all over North America, happening right now. Some dreams really do come true. It may take 40+ years, but SO WHAT?!? Greg Mullavey, Greg Mullavey was worth the wait. A die-hard Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman fan, who missed nary a one of the 325 episodes, which in 1977, pre VCRs, and COVID, when I actually had a life and did stuff, required some effort and diehard devotion, spent today in fangirl heaven. Best part, Greg exceeded all of my very high expectations. Having heard how lovely he is, witnessing his grace first hand, his exemplary social conscience, his authenticity, warmth, thoughtfulness, intelligence, off-the-charts talent, and generosity of spirit moved me… more like blew me away. We talked about Fernwood, of course. His audition with Louise Lasser, to being cast by creator Norman Lear and director, Joan Darling… Mary Kay Place, Dabney Coleman, Graham Jarvis, Dody Goodman, the genuine laughs and fun of it all. We circled back to growing up in Buffalo NY with his major league ballplaying father, Greg Mulleavy, a White and Red Sox, to coaching the Brooklyn and then LA Dodgers, playing baseball himself, only discovering theatre in the Army, where everything turned on a dime. Greg tells the tale with passion and flare. Starting out in theatre in NY, working his way to Hollywood, parts on Bonanza, and loads of other shows before landing as Tom Hartman, the career and life changer. Studying, always studying (still today), in-class with Nicholson, Hopper, and Harry Dean Stanton, meeting Meredith MacRae, their idyllic love story which played out off-screen and on. His father-in-law, Gordon MacRae, hot tubing with Jennifer Jones, working with Natalie Wood, Richard Burton, Mia Farrow, how approaches the work, and teaches it to others. Throughout Greg's great storytelling he pulled out dialect after dialect, all delivered flawlessly, without effect. Such mastery of craft. I can't wait to witness his return to the stage, post-pandemic. Out here auditioning, I sure hope he lands something worthy of his talents with lotsa meat. I wanna watch and savor. Greg's acting is high art. So is his humanity. Food for the COVID crazy soul, Greg shared his health regimens––supplements, nutrients, and meditation, to his thoughts on masking and vaxxing. He's the whole package, brains, heart, soul, and talent out the wazoo. For this fangirl, I'm floating over the rainbow tonight. Tom Hartman lives! More importantly, so does Greg Mullavey. My conversation with Debbie Levin was one of my favorite conversations this year. Some notes from our conversation: Debbie went to USC film school and wanted to be a film critic. She did celebrity interviews that she got just by calling them. These included George Segal, Richard Dreyfuss and Henry “the Fonz” Winkler. The Environmental Media Association, which Debbie has spent her career with was started by Norman Lear and Alan Horn. Debbie's good friend is Wendie Malick who starred on Just Shoot Me! I mentioned Ed Begley Jr. who was on a documentary about the EV1, Who Killed the Electric Car. Debbie told a story about Ed riding his bicycle to the Oscars. Debbie convinced Wendie Malick to get David Spade to host the 10thanniversary of the EMA awards ceremony with her. Debbie helped build the brand around the EMA by recruiting Amy Smart to help out (She later set Amy up with her future husband.) Debbie mentioned not knowing what a Step and Repeat is…in case you don't either. So I told Debbie I don't love the paper straw but that I had used a straw made of pasta which we both agreed was genius. So now I know where you can get them. Debbie can be reached at the Environmental Media Association and at green4ema at the socials including Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn.

TV scholar Kathleen Collins grew up loving television before it was cool—while others fancied themselves sophisticated for digging film and music, she was unapologetically obsessing over Square Pegs. In her book From Rabbit Ears to the Rabbit Hole, she shares her nostalgic journey as a kid growing up with a four-channel, cathode-ray set, to her choice to study television as an academic pursuit, and through our national obsession with streaming today. In this conversation, we travel back in time with her to discuss why Norman Lear's 1970s shows stand the test of time, why the only way to do homework in the ‘80s was with MTV playing in the background, and how the shift to the Streaming Era's infinite choices has made TV so much more stressful. When was the last time you turned on the television and heard more stories about Black male success than you heard about the low expectations, racial bias, and economic stigma that affect Black boys and men in our country?  With the prevalence of misinformation, racial inequity, and economic bias permeating our society, how will we ensure our boys are not lost to cultural stigma before they have a chance at success? Today on the podcast, I’m speaking with Neil Phillips, co-founder and former CEO of Visible Men Academy. VMA provides boys from low-income families with outstanding academic, character, and social education in a nurturing school environment. Neil’s work confronts systemic bias and inequity with a deep belief in goodness, love, and the promise of youth as agents of change for our educational systems and our world.  Listen in! About Neil Phillips: Neil Phillips believes that love is the answer to just about everything. If that makes you uncomfortable, that's okay. Discomfort signals an opportunity for growth. Neil has spent his entire career managing his own discomfort and diving deeply into the realm of breaking the bonds of systemic racism and having the uncomfortable yet productive conversations that can radically change organizations and individual lives. Neil also knows what it takes to truly transform and elevate the lives of young people and has discovered that it is love.  On a practical level, it looks a lot like leadership, encouragement, boundaries, expectations, and accountability. But ask any one of the children he has had the privilege of knowing over his decades of work as an educator, coach, and youth advocate, and they will tell you that Neil Phillips loves them and was never afraid to say it or show it. Love has made all the difference. Neil is a Harvard University graduate, and his life is dedicated to the elevation of Black male achievement, fulfillment, and societal contribution. Through an emphasis on what is working for Black boys and men in America, Neil shines a spotlight on what success looks like and shifts the narrative away from the misleading and harmful stereotypes that have plagued and repressed Black male achievement for far too long. He educates audiences around what is working for Black boys and men in America rather than what is failing.  Neil is the co-founder, founding principal, and former CEO of Visible Men Academy, an "A" rated public charter school for K-5th grade located in Bradenton, Florida. It provides boys from low-income families with outstanding academic, character, and social education in a nurturing school environment. Neil is the founder and director of Visible Men Network, a dynamic digital platform that collects and shares stories from accomplished Black men, shapes these stories into success curriculum, and delivers this curriculum to boys across America through schools and community agencies. Neil is an Aspen Institute Education Entrepreneurship Fellow, a member of the inaugural Echoing Green/Open Society Foundation Black Male Achievement Fellowship. He is a multiple-time winner of The Nantucket Project Audience Award for his provocative talk on race in America called “Race to Truth,” for his compelling on-stage conversation with famed television producer Norman Lear and, most recently, for his on-stage conversation with former President George W. Bush. Currently, Neil is the subject of a documentary film project titled Visible Man, highlighting his efforts to elevate Black boys and men in America.  Learn more at Visible Men Network, or follow Neil on Facebook or Instagram. Jay’s memoir, Honky in the House: Writing & Producing The Jeffersons, not only takes you inside the writing room of The Jeffersons (CBS, 1975-1985), but provides a capsule history of the so-called Golden Age of TV Sitcoms, as well as insight into why Norman Lear was, and is, one of the shrewdest and most courageous producers television will ever know. Whatever you may think of the Golden Globes, their voters hit a bull’s-eye when they gave a special award to Norman Lear, the youngest 98-year-old in Hollywood. He could easily coast along on his many accomplishments as a writer, producer, director, and political activist; instead he is engaged in new projects on a daily basis. He also penned a candid, entertaining autobiography called Even This I Get to Experience.             Jessie and I were privileged to spend an hour with him as he was just settling into his new office suite on the Sony Pictures lot two and a half years ago. He gave birth to such TV series as All in the Family, Maude, and The Jeffersons and was then busily involved in a reboot of One Day at a Time. He’s worked in television since 1950, but no one seems to talk to him about the movies he wrote, produced, and/or directed, like Cold Turkey, or those for which he was a midwife (like The Princess Bride). We relished spending time with this highly amusing, soft-spoken giant—even when he fielded a cell phone call from a political fundraiser in the midst of our interview!

One of Oprah’s favorite quotes comes from German mystic Meister Eckhart. He said, “If the only prayer you say in your entire life is ‘thank you,’ that will be enough.” Oprah says when she started keeping a gratitude journal more than 20 years ago, it was one of the most important things she’s done. The daily practice of writing down five things to be grateful for balanced her life in subtle and inspiring ways. "It sounds simple,” Oprah says, “but when you go through the day staying conscious about what you put on your gratitude list, it shifts the lens through which you see the world.” In this episode of Super Soul, Oprah sits down with luminaries like Mark Nepo, Ram Dass, Elizabeth Lesser, Reverend Ed Bacon, Tracey Jackson, Paul Williams, Geneen Roth, Cheryl Strayed, Caroline Myss, Gretchen Rubin, Shawn Achor, Marie Forleo, Lynne Twist, Louie Schwartzberg and Norman Lear to discover that the practice of gratitude can elevate our lives to a state of grace. Interviews with these talented writers, speakers and thought leaders are excerpted from Oprah’s Emmy Award-winning show Super Soul Sunday. You can also find this compilation and other insightful conversations in Oprah’s best-selling book The Wisdom of Sundays.
