From her first meeting to the final day, Margie relates how writing The Facts of Life taught her everything about “the facts” of making Hollywood television in the 80s!THE CONVERSATIONSECRET SITCOM WRITER: How Margie wrote a sitcom pilot "Under One Roof" based on her life at night -- while spending her days being a mother, a housewife, AND a journalist! Hollywood writer/producer Bernie Orenstien (That Girl!, Sanford & Son) reads it and calls her with these magical words: “I think you could have a career out here.”  Two weeks later she's on a plane to Hollywood!INSTANT CHEMISTRY: Actress Linda Marsh teams with Margie and a writing partnership begins…SPEAK YOUR TRUTH: Their first meeting at Facts of Life: “Why are the girls wearing hot pants and cut-off tops -- in New England? In winter?!? It's kiddie porn!”  Margie & Linda stay on Facts of Life from Season 2 through Season 6 -- working their way up from Staff Writers to Show Runners!THE ONE THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING:  Margie & Linda write S2:EP3 “Double Standard” -- showrunners Jerry Mayer and Jack Elinson tell them: “You have found the soul of the show”.THE ONE WHERE NATALIE'S FATHER HAS AN AFFAIR: “We loved the actor but we hated the character. So we killed him.”WORKING WITH THE GIRLS: Working with Charlotte Rae, Lisa Whelchel, Mindy Cohn, Kim Fields, Nancy McKeon and Geri Jewell.Lisa Whelchel balked when the writers pitched Blair losing her virginity. So Mindy Cohn said: “I'll do it!”WHAT'S NEXT? The day came when Linda Marsh said, “I'm done.”  But Margie kept going…Then Marcy Carsey called: “We'd like to bring you on ‘A Different World'”!THINKING IN THE CAR: How the award-winning “No Means No” episode came to be -- and almost didn't happen at all!"MAKE DWAYNE THE HERO" - How to solve the producer notes when tackling a story on campus rape in "No Means No" So join Susan and Sharon -- and Margie -- as they talk Mary Tyler Moore, Terri Hatcher, Jason Bateman, Asaad Kelada, Susan Fales Hill, Neema Barnette, HBCs, Cagney & Lacey, working for diversity…  and saying “No” to Norman Lear! STAY TUNED IN TWO WEEKS FOR THE FACTS OF LIFE WITH MARGIE PETERS - PART 2!  AUDIO-OGRAPHYWatch The Facts of Life: IN FLUX! Oh, Archieeee. Edith Bunker (as portrayed by Jean Stapleton) was a force of nature. At turns both naïve and loud, Edith's point of view was critical to the success of the 70's sitcom, All in the Family, for nine seasons. Season 8, however, was a harrowing one for the beloved housewife. Yes, dear listener, we are venturing into some “very special episodes” of the acclaimed TV show. “Edith's 50th Birthday” was a groundbreaking portrayal of s*xual assault, survival, and trauma. “Edith's Crisis of Faith” was a gut-wrenching depiction of a murderous hate crime and how it can challenge one's religious beliefs. Join the Old Roommates as they revisit both special episodes all through their middle-aged lens. Listen to this.Old Roommates can be reached via email at oldroommatespod@gmail.com. Comedian George Wallace has finally become the lead of his own sitcom at 72. And all it took was convincing Norman Lear to reimagine ‘Sanford and Son' with Laverne Cox as his character's trans daughter in the TV legend's final project. In this episode, Wallace talks about everything that went into making his new series ‘Clean Slate' happen—and what he hopes it teaches the most ignorant members of MAGA nation. The stand-up comedian also looks back at his more than 50 year career in show business, from the racist undertones of his early appearances on Johnny Carson's ‘Tonight Show' to his lifelong friendship with Jerry Seinfeld, who he says he still competes with for laughs to this day. The prolific tweeter also takes time to sound off on Elon Musk, who he believes should “go to jail just for creating that Cybertruck.”Follow George Wallace on X @MrGeorgeWallace and Instagram @therealgeorgewallace Follow Matt Wilstein on Bluesky @mattwilstein Follow The Last Laugh on Instagram @lastlaughpod and Threads @lastlaughpodHighlights from this episode and others at The Daily Beast Hosted on Acast. While much has been written about Norman Lear, before and after his death on Dec. 5. 2023, Tripp's book shows that there remains much to learn about the legendary “man in the white hat”— since Lear himself was often reluctant to discuss his early life in great detail. Topics this segment include how Lear got his foothold in show business by way of Danny Thomas, and his roots in the golden era of variety television throughout the 1950s and early '60s. Norman Lear: His Life & Times, the first comprehensive biography of the eponymous TV pioneer by show business historian, entertainment journalist and author Tripp Whetsell, will be released by Applause Books on November 11th. Hailed by Publisher's Weekly as a "fitting tribute to a consequential figure in television history," it is the first in-depth biography of the iconic writer, producer and social activist, who beginning in the early 1970s, forever altered America's television landscape with such groundbreaking situation comedies as All in the Family, Maude, Good Times, The Jeffersons, One Day at a Time and Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman. While much has been written about Lear, Whetsell demonstrates there is still a lot more to be learned about "the man in the white hat," who was arguably the first behind-the-scenes television figure to become a bona fide celebrity in his own right, whose multi-award-winning taboo-busting sitcoms averaged as many as 120 million viewers a week during their peak.Whetsell currently teaches the only college-level course about Lear and his classic sitcoms at their alma mater, Boston's Emerson College, in which Lear appeared as a guest via Zoom twice. He was also the only journalist to interview Lear exclusively for a 40th anniversary retrospective of All in the Family for TV Guide in 2001. From his birth in New Haven, Connecticut in July 1922 right up until his death in Los Angeles in December 2023 at the age of 101, Lear's life is told in thorough, meticulous detail with unflinching candorBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

He just finished the first two episodes of Frasier re-boot season 2, and has wrapped up the pilot “Mid Century Modern” for Fox. He will be at the helm of “Mid Century Modern” this Fall as the show goes to series. The current primetime television schedule features one show “Neighborhood,”- whose pilot episode Burrows directed and one streaming show, the “Frasier Re-boot” which will begin airing Season 2 on Paramount + in mid-September 2024. In June of2022, he embarked into a new market when he published his autobiography, “Directed by James Burrows.” It has received quite a bit of attention and praise from the industry. Burrows learned his trade from the very best, the legendary writer/director Abe Burrows, whose noted career included such classics as “Guys and Dolls,” “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” and “Cactus Flower.” Born in Los Angeles and raised in New York, Burrows graduated from Oberlin College and continued his education at Yale, where he earned a master's degree in fine arts. Burrows relocated to Hollywood to work as a dialogue coach for “O.K. Crackerby!,” a short-lived television series starring Burl Ives. When the show ended, he returned to New York and initially worked as a stage manager before directing several off-Broadway shows, such as “The Castro Complex,” and stock productions of “The Odd Couple” and “Never Too Late.” In 1974, Burrows moved back to the West Coast when he was invited to visit MTM Productions in Los Angeles and offered a job directing an episode of “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” Mr. Burrows and his wife, Debbie, reside in Los Angeles and between them they have a quartet of daughters.

Are Hollywood's youngest stars in any less danger now than those of past eras? We pose this question to Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman's Claudia Lamb. At age 11 she was cast as Mary's daughter Heather Hartman in the groundbreaking Norman Lear soap parody. Claudia offers a front row view to her traumatic life as a 70s child star, at the mercy of her abusive parents and insight into how she gnawed through their shackles to pursue a radio journalism career and become a champion for today's child actors.Claudia was a gourmet meal ticket to her criminally exploitative parents who squandered all her money as she cranked out hundreds of commercials and print ads as a toddler who was shoved into the spotlight and dragged by her angry and brutal mother to audition after audition.Claudia candidly conveys the extent of the violence and terror inflicted by her narcissistically cruel mother as Claudia's labor, throughout her childhood supported the entire family while alienating her five brothers. Her talent and intelligence branded her as a go-to for commercial producers, where, as a stand-by, she frequently replaced the principal. Then at the age of 11, after being pummeled by her mother for a poor math grade, (working kids needed to keep their grades above a C average) Claudia was dragged to a cattle-call populated by every chubby, frizzy haired 13 year old in Hollywood. Claudia, a scrawny, pigtailed 11 year old nailed the reading and was instantly cast as Heather Hartman where she treasured her three years on the set of Norman Lear's outrageous, unprecedented soap satire.Claudia tells of marathon filming sessions, (five episodes a week) with no cue cards or teleprompters. (Louise Lasser would scribble her lines on the kitchen table!) She celebrates the immense talents of Mary Kay Place, Martin Mull and Fred Willard, and shares fabulous anecdotes about Donny and Jimmy Osmond (The Donny & Marie Show filmed next door) and how Claudia was nearly crushed by a mob of fans who spotted her chatting up some Osmonds and jumped a fence to get in on that action.Claudia is frank in her assessment of the adults who let her down as she endured her mother's abuse. Her bruises were in clear view of the wardrobe department. At the age of 18, Claudia put Hollywood in her rear view and became an award winning journalist who now speaks to parents about the reality and dangers posed to children by show business.Weezy offers a supporting view, recommending Demi Lovato's new documentary on Hulu and Disney + called Child Star. Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to J.D. Lobue Jr., son of television director & at one time budding sunshine pop musician J.D. Lobue Sr. We reached out to J.D. Jr., after reading an article in a fantastic music magazine called Ugly Things about a band from the 1960s called The Gordian Knot. While reading the article, the name J.D. Lobue came up and host Josh Mills immediately thought, “That MUST be the father of my former little league baseball teammate!” After all, Lobue isn't Smith, it's a pretty unique name. With a little bit more research, we discovered our hunch was correct, it was the same person. As we dug a little further, we realized that not only was Sr. a member of The Gordian Knot, but was also a well-known television director whose credits included multiple credits for iconic American shows like Soul Train, Soap, It's A Living, Herman's Head, Dharma and Greg and so many more. There were also credits for shows that didn't make it like Norman Lear's All's Fair, Amanda's By The Sea, Comedy Zone, You Take The Kids and more. So on this episode, we get into the weeds on what it was like in the booth watching your dad direct Soul Train and how your dad kept it together when things didn't go right on the set of Soap. We also discuss meeting the great Madeline Kahn, how he channeled The Bad News Bears Tanner as a member of the Dodgers at Studio City National Little League, iconic TV director Jay Sandrich, the jazz fusion band The Crusaders, sitting in Archie Bunker's chair on the All in the Family set, playing tennis at Mel Torme's house and much more. This is the Rarified Heir Podcast and everyone has a story. Take a listen.

Bill Maher had a great idea, bring children into his podcast studio where he drinks hard liquor and smokes weed every episode of Club Random. And what does he talk to these kids about? Mostly transitioning, online porn, their parents having sex, and Norman Lear.  David Collins joins the show to try to figure out how Bill doesn't know who Sofia Vergara is. We get jacked up for the Cringe of the Week. Then David had an interview with Luis J Gomez about Who Are The Podcasts. Howard Stern reads the feedback he received from performing the AI script and it's obvious he hates the listeners. Paddy Pukewater made an AI diss track about me. Michelle and Tom from Pink Chicken & the Lazy Man introduce us to the worst cook on YouTube, Jack Scalfani. Cooking With Jack has been a show since 2007, it started bad and it's still terrible. Stuttering John is having childish fantasies about beating up Shuli again and ClayDabbler has weird fantasies about me and my wife. Finally we try to poke a dabbler and listen to your voicemails. Original Air Date: January 27, 2021One of Oprah's favorite quotes comes from German mystic Meister Eckhart. He said, “If the only prayer you say in your entire life is ‘thank you,' that will be enough.” Oprah says when she started keeping a gratitude journal more than 20 years ago, it was one of the most important things she's done. The daily practice of writing down five things to be grateful for balanced her life in subtle and inspiring ways. "It sounds simple,” Oprah says, “but when you go through the day staying conscious about what you put on your gratitude list, it shifts the lens through which you see the world.” In this episode of Super Soul, Oprah sits down with luminaries like Mark Nepo, Ram Dass, Elizabeth Lesser, Reverend Ed Bacon, Tracey Jackson, Paul Williams, Geneen Roth, Cheryl Strayed, Caroline Myss, Gretchen Rubin, Shawn Achor, Marie Forleo, Lynne Twist, Louie Schwartzberg and Norman Lear to discover that the practice of gratitude can elevate our lives to a state of grace. Interviews with these talented writers, speakers and thought leaders are excerpted from Oprah's Emmy Award-winning show Super Soul Sunday. You can also find this compilation and other insightful conversations in Oprah's best-selling book The Wisdom of Sundays. Ram Dass passed away in 2019. Norman Lear passed away in 2023. Want more podcasts from OWN?
