Welcome back to the Spun Today podcast! In this episode, Tony Ortiz dives deep into the creative process, taking you behind the scenes of his own writing journey. This is a special “free writing session” episode, where Tony shares his candid writing stats—celebrating the progress, confronting the setbacks, and reflecting on what it really takes to pursue your creative goals. Tony opens up about the challenges of working on his second novel, the importance of letting go of perfectionism, and the power of the so-called “zero-th draft” approach, inspired by N.K. Jemisin's masterclass on writing. You'll hear about his ongoing project of translating his book "Make Way for You" into Spanish with a little help from AI, and how tracking writing habits can be both humbling and motivating. This episode also highlights a practical writing tip from Naomi Kanakia, explores key takeaways from his recent read—Ta-Nehisi Coates' "Between the World and Me"—and offers concrete strategies for building worlds and characters in your own fiction. As always, Tony wraps up with an honest, unfiltered free writing piece from his personal notebooks, inviting you to reflect on missed opportunities and the importance of showing up for your craft. Whether you're a seasoned writer or just starting out, this episode is packed with real talk, motivational gems, and creative fuel to help you push past self-doubt and get those words on the page. Stick around—you're bound to leave feeling inspired and ready to tackle your next writing session. Check out all free-writing pieces at: spuntoday.com/freewriting. Welcome to Episode 286 of the Spun Today Podcast, the show anchored in writing but truly unlimited in its scope. I'm your host, Tony Ortiz, and today we're diving into something both personal and nostalgic: a throwback tribute episode to my good friend and Spun Today alum, Pablo Mosquera Jr. In this heartfelt installment, we revisit one of our annual beach day recordings—this one taking place on Coney Island during that odd window in the summer of 2020, right in the midst of the COVID pandemic. Pablo and I reflect on everything from the challenges and isolation of lockdown, the mental health impact of working from home, and our predictions about the ever-evolving work landscape, to our perennial struggles getting to Governor's Island for a bike ride and, of course, our shared love of breaking the monotony with a little weekday hooky at the beach. Expect a conversation that ranges far and wide, just like the show itself. We cover road trips, favorite drinks, and the transformative power of routine escapes—plus the creative, life-affirming benefits of unplugging from work and leaning into tradition, even during uncertain times. There's even a story about a real-life lifeguard rescue and a heap of pop culture moments, from The Sopranos to Patrick Swayze classics, all through the unique lens of creativity, inspiration, and the everyday writer's perspective. So whether you're here for the writing talk, the laughs, or some much-needed motivation, this episode invites you to reminisce, recharge, and most of all, keep spinning creativity into your life—no matter what the world throws your way. Welcome to Episode 283 of the Spun Today podcast—the only podcast anchored in writing, but unlimited in scope. I'm your host, Tony Ortiz, and in this deeply personal and heartfelt episode, I invite you to join me as I honor the memory of my dear friend and Spun Today alumni, Pablo Mosquera Jr., who tragically passed away earlier this year. This episode is a special re-release of one of my favorite beachside conversations with Pablo, originally recorded on a traditional day off in Coney Island—a ritual we created to escape the grind, share stories, and reflect on life while soaking up the summer sun. It's an episode filled with laughter, nostalgia, and the kind of meaningful storytelling that makes the Spun Today podcast what it is. Throughout this episode, I touch on everything from cherished friendship catchphrases and cycling marathons, to our first jobs and the profound impact travel can have on creativity and perspective. We reminisce about coming-of-age moments, family reunions, and the small rituals that inspire us. As you listen, I hope you'll appreciate the raw emotion and candid storytelling as much as I did revisiting it. Whether you're tuning in as a writer looking for inspiration, or as someone seeking comfort in community, this episode is a reminder to cherish every moment, tell your stories, and put pen to paper while you still can. So pull up a chair (or a spot on the sand), and get ready for an episode that's as much a tribute as it is a celebration of creative living. Rest in peace, Pablo—you are missed, and your story lives on through the words and memories we share. Let's get into it. Welcome to Episode 274 of the Spun Today Podcast! I'm your host, Tony Ortiz, and in this episode, we're diving deep into the intricate web of relationships, drama, and personal evolution presented in "Industry Season 3" and the psychological exploration of dual identity in "Joker Folie à Deux." We'll also touch on the comedic controversy surrounding Hasan Minhaj's new Netflix special "Off With His Head." First, we'll unravel the complex dynamics between Harper and Yaz in "Industry," where love-hate relationships mix admiration with moments of belittling—proving that friendship can be as intricate as any corporate maneuver. Then, we'll explore the gripping drama of Pierpoint's near-collapse and the character arcs that reflect profound personal transformations, illustrating the power of resilience amid chaos. In the realm of film, join me as I dissect Todd Phillips' "Joker Folie à Deux," a sequel that combines dark humor with musical elements to portray Arthur's tumultuous internal world. We'll discuss Harley Quinn's character development and the symbolism that adds depth to her relationship with the Joker. Lastly, we'll delve into Hasan Minhaj's unapologetic and thought-provoking comedy special, where he tackles controversial topics with wit and bravado, addressing the blurred lines between truth and storytelling in comedy. Welcome to Episode 268 of Spun Today, the podcast that dives deep into the world of writing, creativity, and the stories that both inspire and challenge us. I'm your host, Tony, and in this episode, we're exploring a rich tapestry of thought-provoking topics, from the emotional connections we share with loved ones, to the narratives we craft about ourselves. We'll delve into the teachings of renowned authors like Steven Pressfield and Walter Mosley, discussing the dichotomy between self-criticism and the quest for authentic storytelling. I'll share my reflections on two intriguing books—Ma Rothman's "Multiverse," a techno-thriller that piqued my interest despite my usual disinterest in sci-fi reading, and Charlamagne Tha God's "Get Honest or Die Lying," which offers powerful insights on self-evolution and nurturing creativity in children. Additionally, we'll touch on practical writing tips, the impact of cultural icons like Stephen King, and even get into a discussion about the film "Ford vs Ferrari" and its storytelling mechanisms. Whether you're a seasoned writer or just looking for a burst of creative inspiration, this episode is brimming with valuable insights. Stay tuned as we wrap up with ways you can support the show and enhance your own creative journey. Let's get started! Check out all free-writing pieces at: spuntoday.com/freewriting.
