Join Matt and me for Episode 136 as we take a look at Bye Bye Birdie (1995), the made-for-TV adaptation of the beloved stage musical. Featuring a standout cast including Jason Alexander, Vanessa Williams, Chynna Phillips, and Marc Kudisch, this version had all the ingredients for a great revival. While we appreciated the performances and some fun moments throughout, the film as a whole didn't quite soar for us. We talk through what worked, what didn't, and how this adaptation compares to other versions of Birdie on stage and screen.Support The Conner & Smith Show on Patreon here:https://www.patreon.com/ConnerandSmith?utm_campaign=creatorshare_fan

Julia Knitel grew up immersed in theater, with parents who ran a community company out of a church basement. From an early age, she was surrounded by costumes, sets, and the collaborative chaos that comes with putting on a show — and she was hooked. After booking her Broadway debut as a teen in Bye Bye Birdie, Julia continued to carve her own path through the industry, landing the lead in Beautiful, touring with Come From Away, and now earning her first Tony nomination for Dead Outlaw. In this conversation, she opens up about what it means to embrace your weirdness, trust your instincts, and find your place in a profession that often tries to put you in a box. We talk about her journey from ensemble kid to leading lady, why she swears by film photography and beta blockers, and how Dead Outlaw gave her the rare opportunity to be fully herself onstage — quirks, noodle cowboy, and all. Julia also shares her thoughts on staying grounded, celebrating individuality, and the power of telling yourself you're a star before you step into the spotlight. Julia Knitel is a Tony-nominated actor currently starring in Dead Outlaw on Broadway. She made her Broadway debut in Bye Bye Birdie, later starred as Carole King in the national tour of Beautiful, and appeared in Come From Away. She plays eight characters in Dead Outlaw, a genre-defying musical with seven Tony nominations, including one for her performance. MusicalTalk continues its two part tribute to the late Charles Strouse, the legendary composer of Annie, Bye Bye Birdie, Applause, I and Albert, All American, Charlotte's Web, All Dogs Go To Heaven, Minsky's, Mayor, Marty, Nick and Nora and so many others! In this episode, Thos and Charles enjoy a charmingly inimate, detailed and honest look at his works and career which paint a perfect picture of the hugely talented but modest man he truly was; and it's a chance to learn more about the aborted Stanley Kubric Star Wars Musical! Dick Van Dyke called him "one of the greats" and in this wonderful conversation, you'll find out why!
In honor of The New Yorker's centennial this year, the magazine's staff writers are pulling out some classics from the long history of the publication. Louisa Thomas, The New Yorker's sports correspondent, naturally gravitated to a story about baseball with a title only comprehensible to baseball aficionados: “Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu.” The essay was by no less a writer than the author John Updike, and the “Kid” of the title was Ted Williams, the Hall of Fame hitter who spent nineteen years on the Boston Red Sox. By happenstance, Updike joined the crowd at Fenway Park for Williams's last game before his retirement, in 1960. Thomas, looking at subtle word changes that Updike made as he was working on the piece, reflects on the writer's craft and the ballplayer's. “Marginal differences really matter,” she says. “And it's those marginal differences that are the difference between a pop-up, a long fly, and a home run. Updike really understood that, and so did Williams.”Plus, a visit with one of the great modern practitioners of the earworm, Charles Strouse, who wrote music for “Bye Bye Birdie” and “Annie,” and the theme to “All in the Family.” Strouse died this month at ninety-six. In one of his last interviews he gave, in 2023, he spoke with the Radio Hour's Jeffrey Masters about his rivalry with Stephen Sondheim. “Stephen and I were friendly enemies. He didn't like me much. I didn't like him less.”
MusicalTalk pays a special tribute to the late, great Charles Strouse, who has just died a month shy of his 97th birthday. Charles was one of the giants of the last sixty years of musical theatre and leaves an enormous legacy: with new shows produced across seven decades, collaborations with Alan Jay Lerner, Lee Adams, Mel Brooks, Stephen Schwartz, Arthur Laurents, Martin Charnin, Rupert Holmes, Betty Comden and Adolph Green to name but a few, and with amazing rosta of shows and films featuring his music, such as Annie, Bye Bye Birdie, Golden Boy, Nick and Nora, Applause and All Dogs Go To Heaven, Charles Strouse was, as Dick Van Dyke observed "one of the greats". In this special episode of MusicalTalk, Thos recalls his memories of this amazingly talented, yet always modest, musical theatre legend - and there's another chance to hear Charles in conversation from 2009 - so put on a happy face!
Robbie Rozelle is a beloved cabaret artist, director, producer, housewives aficionado, and my friend. He identifies as a Charles Nelson Reilly with a Paul Lynde Rising. And guess what?! We're going back to basics! Robbie joins me in person, in my living room, and we talk about his Hamilton experience as well as pretty much everything else. As a kid, Robbie fell in love with classic movie musicals (The Wizard of Oz, The Sound of Music, Annie (1982 ONLY), Bye Bye Birdie, Damn Yankees) and became transfixed. By the time he was cast as Scarecrow his freshman year of high school he knew he was going to be a performer. As a young gay kid in the middle of the AIDS crisis, Robbie found hope, joy, and a sense of belonging in theatre, which is why he's made it his life goal to preserve musicals through producing cast and artist albums. This week, Robbie talks about his journey to New York City by way of upstate New York with a quick stop in Pennsylvania, how he became the Creative Director of Playbill, his transition to Center Stage Records, and how wise words from Jan Maxwell led to his "second life" as a cabaret icon. A special tribute to a great composer, Charles Strouse. Classic and rare tunes from Golden Boy, Bye Bye Birdie, Annie, Applause and many more.
We remember Broadway composer Charles Strouse, who died May 15 at age 96. He wrote the music for the hit musicals Bye Bye Birdie and Annie, which included such songs as "Put On a Happy Face," "A Lot of Livin' to Do," and "Tomorrow." Jay-Z sampled "Hard Knock Life," from Annie, on a Grammy-award-winning rap recording. Strouse understood why: "I wanted that song to be gritty. I didn't want it to be a fake. I wanted it to show these desperate times and these maltreated girls." Strouse spoke with Terry Gross in 2002. Also, critic-at-large John Powers reviews Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. This week we honor the life and work of our friend, the Broadway composer Charles Strouse—who died last week at age 96—who wrote "Annie" and "Bye Bye Birdie" and many other musicals and songs, by hearing some of his music, including "Poor Little Me," which he co-wrote with FFRF Co-President Dan Barker. Then, we speak with journalist Talia Lavin, author of the book Wild Faith: How the Christian Right Is Taking Over America.
I, along with the rest of the musical theater world, was saddened to learn that composer CHARLES STROUSE, one of the last of the great creators from the Golden Age of Broadway had passed away last week at the age of 96. Of course, Strouse and his three Tony Award-winning “Best Musicals": Bye Bye Birdie, Applause, and Annie — have been discussed frequently on this podcast. So over the weekend, I dug deep into the archives of Broadway Nation and newly adapted a section of my upcoming book regarding the musical Golden Boy and wove it all together to create this tribute episode, including an excerpt from my 2021 interview with Applause original cast member Lee Roy Reams. I am also delighted to report that a brand-new production of Bye Bye Birdie will open on June 10 at The 5th Avenue Theater in Seattle, where it will play through June 29. If you are in Seattle, or can get there, this is a fantastic opportunity to experience the musical and theatrical magic of Charles Strouse. Become A PATRON of Broadway Nation! Kids. What is wrong with kids these days? They're not perfect like we were. It's musicals month and we've arrived at a 60s musical and the only musical Bob already saw prior to this month. This musical, inspired by Elvis getting drafted into the army, is a pop culture spoof and a launchpad for a young Ann-Margret who mesmerizes in this 1963 George Sidney adaptation of “BYE BYE BIRDIE”. A popular singer gets to kiss a small tawn girl in small town Ohio and if this works out then 5 or 6 people could be set for life! It's an extensive cast that also stars Dick Van Dyke as a speed dealer, Janet Leigh as a withered old marm, Bobby Rydell who is being cucked by a teen idol despite being one in real life, Paul Lynde as the perfect father and Maureen Stapleton as the perfect mother. It also stars Ed Sullivan as himself. A crafty musical comedy that rightly deserves its place as one of the great teen movies and the best movie ever featuring a turtle high on speed. JFK would be dead later this same year. Just thought I'd mention that. All November we RAISE THE CURTAIN & BELT THE CHORUS for a musicals themed month and we're heading to a fictional Russian town called Anatevka for a folksy tale of a pious and poor Jewish family. This beloved stage show ran very long so perhaps it's no wonder that Norman Jewison's adaptation of “FIDDLER ON THE ROOF” was a box office smash for 1971. In it we meet Tevye' and his family. He's got 3 daughters at marrying age and the good book dictates that their marriages be arranged to benefit their family and status. Such is tradition! But times are changing in Eastern Europe in the early 20th Century and these kids got their own crazy ideas. With the weight of tradition and the dangers of society upon them can Tevye bend without breaking his faith? Starring Chaim Topol, Norma Crane, Leonard Frey and more. Music by Jerry Bock and adapted by John Williams. Angela has booked this month and much of it is Bob's introduction to many musical styles. The only one he's seen for this coming month is “Bye Bye Birdie” of all things. He's only seen three more beyond that. Hear us set fresh eyes and opinions on a beloved classic. If we were a rich man, we would still do a movie podcast. We love movies that much. Michelle is going to preschool! Pair this with a terrifying dream sequence and the unfortunate reality of letting the class bird out of its cage and you get "Bye, Bye, Birdie"! Though it's not our favorite episode, it's one we will never forget (whether we'd like to or not). Plus, Stephanie continues to advance her skills as a sleuth! This time, she manages to get D.J.'s diary stuck to her hand... Are we even surprised?!
