We're joined by Laura Tripaldi: material scientist, writer, and researcher at the Center for AI and Culture at NYU Shanghai. You probably know her from Parallel Minds: Discovering the Intelligence of Materials (Urbanomic, 2022), an essay in book form that became a phenomenon in theory and art circles. Tripaldi's work challenges one of the strongest contentions within the philosophy computation: that intelligence is substrate-indifferent, that it can scale and migrate independent of what carries it. She argues the opposite, that you cannot separate intelligence from the materials through which it is conveyed. This becomes experimentally clear in her recent essay Substrates Unbound (Antikythera, 2025), where she tracks biocomputing systems like DishBrain — living neuronal cultures interfaced with silicon chips that don't execute pre-given code but reorganize, learn, and adapt. Mouse neurons and human neurons perform differently under the same training conditions. This reframes a central question of the moment: not 'can we scale intelligence,' but which matter are we asking to think, under what energy regime, and at what cost?References:Tripaldi, Laura. On this week's Good Morning Hospitality, A Skift Podcast, Hotels Edition, Sarah Dandashy and Steve Turk break down how AI is quickly becoming a bigger part of hotel strategy, from Hilton's new AI travel planner to analysts predicting that years of hotel tech investments could finally start delivering real earnings gains. They also examine how rising oil prices could push airline fares higher and how government shutdown pressures are already creating TSA staffing shortages and longer airport security lines across the U.S. Finally, in the Unhinged Story of the Week, an SAS flight bound for Málaga turns around mid-air after a mouse is spotted onboard, proving even the smallest stowaway can derail a flight. Scientists exposed mice to extremely powerful electric fields and discovered something unexpected: power frequency fields actually improved memory performance, while static fields had no effect. In this episode, I break down a fascinating comparative study that reveals how frequency matters as much as field strength when it comes to biological effects. The researchers used field strengths of thirty-five thousand volts per meter -- far stronger than typical environmental exposures -- and found cognitive enhancement rather than impairment. In This Episode Why power frequency fields enhanced mouse memory while static fields didn't What thirty-five thousand volts per meter means in real-world context How frequency characteristics affect biological systems differently Featured Study A comparative study on influences of static electric field and power frequency electric field on cognition in mice. What if you didn't have to walk down Main Street, U.S.A. to feel Disney magic? In this solo deep-dive, Scott follows a late-night Reddit thought experiment into a full Imagineering-style exploration: why Disney's immersive experiences almost never exist outside of its destinations—and what it would take to change that. From the rise and fall of Mickey's Kitchen and DisneyQuest to bold blue-sky concepts like cruise-inspired dining nights, adaptive themed environments, and reservation-only hospitality built for repeat local visits, this episode lives at the intersection of fandom, business reality, and creative dreaming. Along the way, Scott is joined by a new “voice” in the conversation: Green Light—the corporate boardroom perspective that evaluates each idea for brand risk, scalability, and margin pressure. This isn't a news episode. It's a thought experiment about what Disney does best, why it works, and whether the version many adult fans dream about—more intimate, more local, more experience-driven—can ever make financial sense. In this episode:The real reasons past off-property Disney concepts struggledWhy fast food with a Disney logo was never going to workThe difference between attractions and hospitality as a business modelA Disney dining concept built for adults first—not familiesRotating themed nights: parks, cruises, characters, and moreHow programmable environments could drive repeat local visitsThe franchise vs. full-ownership quality dilemmaThe ideas that even Scott admits would get an instant corporate “no”Why the Disney we sometimes want most is the hardest to justify financiallyAt its heart, this is about connection—finding new ways to engage with a brand we love when we can't be in the parks, and embracing the creativity that comes from asking “what if?”So grab a drink, get comfortable, and come hang out at the Hangar Bar while we do what Disney fans do best: dream big, overthink the details, and build the PowerPoint anyway.Join the conversation:Would you go to a local Disney hospitality experience like this? What would your themed night be? Connect with us on Discord and social to share your ideas—and maybe help pitch it to the Mouse. There's a great big beautiful tomorrow… and we'll see you real soon.
