Well… let’s face it: the post climate change 21st century castaway is far more likely to find themselves marooned in an apocalypse bunker than on a desert island. Each episode I invite a guest to reflect on the eight pieces of music/ sound they’d download with their post-disaster wifi rationing. Th…

Dominic — Goth Vaporwave, Guitar Orchestras & Sampling 1.0

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 3, 2021 73:29

For this Instalment our Lockaway is Dominic Simpson, a ‘node within the leftfield London music scene’ and native Hackneyite chronicling matters at the heart of the ‘Crapital’. Dominic wields guitar, piano and clarinet on stage, battling with Theresa May speeches cut-up into hypnotic mantras under the moniker Dream Maps.

Dominic’s approach to his bunker ration strings together several musical epiphanies which he sees as characterising his life before the apocalypse, featuring a visionary composer who assembled an orchestra of 100 guitarists, a sonic butcher who transforms Muzak hits into macabre Frankenstein dirges and a 30 strong band conjuring the spirit of Ancient Sudan through a Prog Rock lens. For this Instalment our Lockaway is Charlotte Wendy Law, an artist specialising in acts of Decreation. Our download ration consultation looks both back to the sounds of Palaeolithic caves and forward to the sounds of interplanetary refugees to forge a new way of life for the bunker. Her choices range from synth drone pioneers that make handbags levitate, an uncompromising composer who developed his own style of ‘organic music’ and a multimedia chronicle of a recent religion, to help inspire her to construct her own subterranean pantheon of gods... Charlotte’s work draws on ‘queer nomadism, alchemical processes, deep listening and quiet observation. cwl combines live art, sound, voice, and moving image to create work that continually blurs the boundaries between body and landscape, seeking to share a sense of enchantment and solidarity with the natural world.’ For more of Charlotte’s work see: charlottewendylaw.net To hear Charlotte’s film ‘Raft’ in full: youtu.be/gPA9Qc_c5Js For Charlotte’s Cassette Release, ‘Ice Since Fire’: linearobsessional.bandcamp.com/album/ice…ince-fire Apocalypse Bunker Discs is the alternative

Hannah White & Stephen Shiell work together as Blanc Sceol (meaning white temporary shelter). They are certified Deep Listening® practitioners, a discipline that applies meditation principles to sound, developed by the innovative composer Pauline Oliveros. In addition to facilitating Deep Listening® workshops and Sound Walks, Blanc Sceol perform variously, describing their work as ‘Psychosonographic, expressing our experience of place, with field recordings, self-created instruments, found objects, voice and text.’

Past performances have involved demonstrations of Palaeolithic instruments, marauding animal choirs and fishing for sounds at the wetlands. Expect a deep excavation into the human psyche across their choices and an exploration of their sound awareness foremothers. ~ From time expansion to silence sculpting & the cosmic ripplings of tea ~

An Exploration of the Musical 'Outsider'

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 13, 2020 139:31

In a slight digression from the usual Bunkering I have recorded a new show exploring the figure of the ‘Outsider’ in music, in the term's broader sense. At first I focused on unusual tales: psychic composers, self professed extraterrestrials and diy instrument makers, however came to consider the Outsider as also describing figures who were marginalised: exiles, nomads and the oppressed. At the end of this collation I felt unsure about grouping together people who are 'different', but hope the compression of all these alternative visions inspires some fresh perspectives. This programme was originally produced in a shorter format for Angel Radio down in Havant, which has a pre-1964 license, hence the focus on pre-Beatles artists. Featuring: Joe Meek, Rosemary Brown, Sun Ra, Vince Taylor, Screaming Lord Sutch, Lord Buckley, Jack Kerouac, Connie Converse, eden ahbez, Moondog, John Fahey, Washington Phillips, Bunker Hill, Link Wray, Chiyo Ishii, Chiyo and the Crescents, Dorothy Ashby, Rae Bourbon, Hasil Adkins, Sophie Tucker, Lydia Mendoza, Tejano Music, Hafize Leskovicu, Albanian Saze Music, Shin Joong Hyeon, The Cherry Sisters, Songs in the Key of Z, Irwin Chusid, Leona Anderson, Robert Graettinger, Raymond Scott, Ivor Cutler, Malvina Reynolds

Sound Designer, Social Commentator and Menace Tom Alcott joins me on a digressive musical exploration of Abney Park Cemetery, Stoke Newington, London, during which we discuss droning Post-Apocalyptic Gothscapes, a nomadic visionary creator of an electronic dulcimer, a Northumbrian experimental folk hero, the 'endless palette' of field recordings and Tom shares a clip from his jurassic cling-film magnum opus... We also play fictional song title ping pong, speculate liberally on the inhabitants of the cemetery (both dead and almost) and offer 'out-the-box' (⚰️) macabre musings on 21st century mortality. Thomas Laroche, representative of Research Laboratories and keeper of thirteen colonies of dermestes maculates beetles, is our Lockaway for this edition. He presented the Bunker with a mystery package containing several occult trinkets released by Research Laboratories, including: a Sexton Ming cassette tape titled 'Mad Sod the Scientist VS Proffecer Pipping-hot', a cassette by Creep of Paris containing an Elvis Presley séance and a Satanic Whoopee Cushion, all of which will be sampled in this show. Thomas's selections range from the explosively abrasive to the candycoated hypernormal; an extracorporeal music concrète nomad, a witty American Diner protest singer and a tape hoarding inventor of electric clothing, to tease just three of his high-intrigue selections... To further explore the world of Research Laboratories: https://researchlaboratories.tumblr.com Apocalypse Bunker Discs is the alternative 'you know what' for the age of rising sea levels, where— let's face it — the castaway is far more likely to find themselves marooned in an underground hiding place than a paradisal isle. Due to the nuclear storms playing havoc with the satellites up above, Wifi rationing will have to be enforced, allowing for 8 selections of music, a film, ebook and artwork to provide solace.
