This Special Episode introduces “ROUGH RIDER”, my new single. It's the first of four new singles that I'm releasing one per month via this podcast. The song is another return to my instrumental roots. It's got a Cool, ‘60s “Spaghetti Western”, guitar-driven, tremolo sounding, Ventures/Link Wray/Duane Eddy kind of vibe. If you close your eyes as you listen you can just picture Clint Eastwood in one of Sergio Leone's classic movies, like “The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly”, riding into town and taking on the bad guys.
Wherein Eric and John once again examine some of the gnarled roots underneath the heavy metal family tree, exploring the development and formative influence of golden age 1950s rock 'n roll, and, just maybe, find the very first heavy metal song ever all the way back in 1956! The past century's puritanical interlopers, better known as the ‘thought police', have had their way with music. And we're not talking about just the lyrics (which will no doubt be the source of most of the songs in the show today)…whether that be the sound of the saxophone or Link Wray's sinister fuzz and feedback…telling us how to think or suggesting that your children would be swayed to the dark side due a mention of Susie getting home past curfew. It's an age old problem. It's really stinkin' thinkin' if you'd have asked Frank Zappa. And someone did and summarized his opinions thusly: “Bad facts make bad law, and people who write bad laws are, in my opinion, more dangerous than songwriters who celebrate their sexuality.” All the songs this week suffered from some form of censorship, whether corporate or governmental. And we're going to play them…damned be the fools.

On this week's Loudini Rock & Roll Circus we dig deep into the history of distortion and the electric guitar and how is shaped the sound of rock music. Topics Discussed: What we did this week: Loudini: Twan Moore & the Train, Black Snake Moan, Are meet and greets worth it? Perry & Dave, The VMA's are still a thing, why that's bad, How D2C is poised to destroy streaming, The tools that musician's need to get hired (not what you think), What Rick Beato (and others) don't understand about today's "charts". Why no bands on "the charts". Robert Epstein explains our "Google-fied" world. Mr. Pittsburgh: Selling guitar to the Wolf, What happened to The Donnas? The History or Distortion: https://www.guitarworld.com/features/the-evolution-of-distortion-how-advances-in-gear-paved-the-way-for-heavy-music https://thejhsshow.com/articles/what-you-need-to-know-about-overdrive-pedals The history of distortion is deeply intertwined with the development of the electric guitar, as the two evolved together to shape the sound of modern music. Here's an overview: ### **Early Days: Accidental Origins (1940s-1950s)** Distortion originally came about as a mistake. In the 1940s and early 1950s, guitarists accidentally discovered that pushing tube amplifiers beyond their normal limits created a gritty, overdriven sound. This was typically caused by damaged speaker cones or malfunctioning amp circuits. Guitarists like Willie Johnson of Howlin' Wolf and bluesmen such as Elmore James and Muddy Waters were among the early users of this overdriven tone, which gave their sound more power and raw emotion. ### **First Deliberate Use: 1950s-1960s** By the late 1950s, guitarists started to intentionally seek out distorted sounds. Link Wray, known for his 1958 instrumental "Rumble," achieved distortion by poking holes in his amplifier's speaker cone. This gave the song a unique, menacing tone that laid the foundation for rock and roll's aggressive edge. In 1961, the first commercially available distortion device, the Maestro Fuzz-Tone pedal (FZ-1), was created by Gibson, famously used in The Rolling Stones' 1965 hit "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction." This marked a pivotal moment in the history of guitar distortion, as fuzz became a sought-after effect in rock music. ### **The Rise of Fuzz and Overdrive (1960s-1970s)** The 1960s saw distortion evolve further with the fuzz effect. Artists like Jimi Hendrix and Keith Richards popularized fuzz pedals, using them to achieve a thick, saturated tone. Hendrix, especially, made innovative use of distortion in tracks like “Purple Haze,” helping to push the boundaries of what was possible with the electric guitar. Around the same time, the concept of overdrive became more refined. Instead of extreme fuzz, overdrive pedals like the Ibanez Tube Screamer simulated the natural distortion that tube amps produced when cranked to high volumes. This allowed guitarists to achieve warm, harmonically rich distortion at lower volumes, making it more versatile for different styles of playing. ### **Heavy Metal and High-Gain Amplifiers (1970s-1980s)** In the 1970s and 1980s, distortion became even heavier as bands like Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, and later Metallica pushed the limits of gain. Marshall amplifiers, known for their high-gain tone, became the go-to choice for hard rock and metal bands, allowing for more sustained and aggressive sounds. Guitarists like Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath) and Eddie Van Halen were known for their iconic distorted tones, which relied heavily on both amp overdrive and distortion pedals. ### **The Modern Era: Digital Distortion (1990s-Present)** In the 1990s, digital technology revolutionized distortion. Digital pedals and multi-effects units began to emulate the classic sounds of tube amps and analog pedals with greater precision. This era also saw the rise of more extreme metal genres that demanded even more distortion and gain, pushing pedal manufacturers to create high-gain stompboxes like the Boss Metal Zone. Today, digital amplifiers and software (e.g., Line 6 Helix, Kemper Profiling Amp) allow guitarists to access a wide range of distortion tones, from vintage fuzz to modern high-gain sounds, all in one device. Players can easily shape their sound using a combination of analog and digital tools, blending the warmth of traditional New & Notable: Loudini: The Damn Truth; Love Out Of Luck Mr Pittsburgh: The Warning; Six Feet Deep

Six years after Italian rock 'n' roll band The Peawees gave us their critically acclaimed album “Moving Target,” they've finally returned with their 7th studio album, “One Ride.” It's been a long wait, one that includes line-up changes, divorces, lost loved ones, job troubles - whatever hardship was thrown at The Peawees, “One Ride” makes it clear that it only made them stronger. This album seethes with the rock 'n' roll swagger of a bygone era, and the band shows the rare ability to wear their influences on their sleeves with a sound that feels unique. The mix of rock 'n' roll, soul, punk, and garage spins on the record like it came straight out of a blender: one part The Sonics, one part Link Wray, two parts The Clash, a splash of Stax shaken over Phil Spector and served like it was thrown straight in your face. Approaching their 30-year mark, the band continues to defy convention and write their own epic on the vast canvas of contemporary rock 'n' roll. "One Ride" is "a true showcase for the criminally underrated songwriting talents of Hervé Peroncini." Once more, The Peawees do not disappoint: as the saying goes…all killers, no fillers. Reflecting on the album's journey, drummer Tommy Gonzalez shares, “We started working on 'One Ride' in 2019. We even recorded the title track then. We were riding the wave of ‘Moving Target,' touring, playing festivals, and had planned to have an album ready for 2022 at the latest. We thought we would record a few songs, go on tour, record a few more, and continue like that until we had a full-length album. Of course, everything got messed up when Covid hit: no possibility to practice together and Hervé was stuck abroad on an island." Frontman/songwriter Hervé Peroncini adds, "We were coming off a beautiful and exhausting year of gigs and tours, and in the meantime, I had written some new material. We all agreed that we should start recording a new record until all that shit broke out just as I was due to return from the island I was supposed to be on for only a short period of time. Although it was a nice place to get stuck, I was still in a two-tiny-room apartment with nothing to do, and after managing to get a guitar, I started recording some stuff on my phone and sending the recordings to the guys. In the end, I stayed on the island for 6 months and wrote three-quarters of the album there. Fortunately, the restrictions were not so strict there, so after a short time, I had the opportunity to go out, see friends, and hear bizarre stories of various kinds - all things that in some way stimulated me to write." The isolation and the unexpected surroundings became fertile ground for creativity, turning adversity into an advantage. The unique circumstances under which "One Ride" was conceived added a layer of raw authenticity to the album. Stories of outsiders, dreamlike lyrics that drag you into nocturnal situations, a sick love, frustration, indecision, resignation, and moments of crazy euphoria suck you into the grooves of a record that exudes rock 'n' roll in every aspect. Tommy Gonzalez continues: "We tried to make demos from a distance. I remember programming a drum beat on some computer app for 'She Cries as She Kills' and sending it to Hervé. It was such a pain in the ass and so unfulfilling to go from hitting the drums to hitting the keyboards, but it was the only way we could keep going. When we finally got the chance to start playing again, we dove back into it as hard as we could." Hervé adds, "Yeah, when we got back on track, our long-time guitar player Carlo Landini told us he was moving to Berlin. So when Dario took his place, we thought it would be essential to play and tour as much as we could to break in the new lineup both musically and on a personal level, and when we realized everything was going smoothly, we finally entered the studio!" The Peawees' journey to "One Ride" is a testament to their enduring spirit and unwavering commitment t...

#elviscostello #lindaronstadt #bozscaggs #bonnieraitt #nicklowe Austin de Lone is an American keyboardist who records and tours with his own bands as well as with other artists, such as Bill Kirchen, Elvis Costello, Bonnie Raitt, Boz Scaggs, Nick Lowe, Commander Cody, and Loudon Wainwright. De Lone grew up in suburban Philadelphia, taking piano lessons at age 12. His early influences included Ray Charles and George Shearing. After stints as a student at the New England Conservatory of Music, Harvard University, and University of California, Berkeley, he moved to Greenwich Village.[3] While at Harvard, de Lone composed the song "One for One," which was the first single released by Linda Ronstadt and the Stone Poneys. Eggs over Easy In 1969, de Lone formed the band Eggs over Easy with Jack O'Hara and Brien Hopkins.[4] In 1970, Chas Chandler persuaded the band to record in London, but those recordings were not released. A four-night-a-week residency at a pub called the Tally-Ho in Kentish Town lasted more than a year. Eggs over Easy played a blend of blues, country, and rock that became known as pub rock. Regular attendees of their shows included members of Brinsley Schwarz and BBC disc jockey John Peel. In 1972, they returned to California and released their first album Good 'N' Cheap produced by Link Wray. The Moonlighters De Lone moved to Marin, California in 1972, where he met Bill Kirchen, who had been performing with Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen. In the late 70s, de Lone joined Kirchen's side-project band, the Moonlighters. Their 1983 album Rush Hour was produced by Nick Lowe. Both de Lone and Kirchen later worked with Lowe and Elvis Costello. De Lone and Kirchen still record and perform together. In 2016, they released their duet album Transatlantica. The Christmas Jug Band De Lone is a member of the Christmas Jug Band, a collection of musicians who have been touring locally each holiday season since 1976, and releasing albums since 1987. The band has included musicians such as Dan Hicks, Tim Eschliman, Jim Rothermel, Lance Dickerson, Brien Hopkins, and Norton Buffalo. Richard de Lone Special Housing Project De Lone coordinates an annual fundraiser for eventual construction of the Richard de Lone Special Housing Project, a residential facility for people with Prader-Willi Syndrome, which de Lone's son Richard is afflicted with. As part of the 2007 event, Elvis Costello reunited with Clover, the band who backed him on his first album My Aim is True.

In 1969, Kirchen took Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen to California and they developed a reputation as musical "outlaws" that were praised by other outlaw musicians and bands like Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, The Grateful Dead and the Allman Brothers Band.Kirchen's band "played a collection of rock 'n' roll, hard-core country, boogie and rockabilly sounds produced in a "high-octane mix" that made them a "happening" group in the San Francisco Bay area. Kirchen began to develop as guitarist, vocalist, songwriter and performer. He became known for his vocal and guitar work on such songs as "Mama Hated Diesels", "Down to Seeds and Stems Again Blues" from the band's albums, Hot Licks, Cold Steel & Truckers' Favorites and Lost in the Ozone. His live performance work was captured on the 1973 album Live From Deep in the Heart of Texas, recorded at the Armadillo World Headquarters in 1973.Kirchen's Commander Cody band broke apart in 1976 and he formed a "swing orchestra" called the Moonlighters and began a decades-long collaboration with British musician Nick Lowe. Lowe produced the Moonlighters' second album Rush Hour, and Kirchen toured with Lowe and joined him in the studio from time to time. During this period Kirchen also worked on albums with Elvis Costello, Gene Vincent, and Link Wray. Kirchen was one of the musicians that pioneered the Americana movement in the 1980s, and also with being a founding father of "twangcore," along with Dave Alvin, Wilco and Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys. Kirchen's signature sound has been dubbed "dieselbilly" and incorporates elements of country, blues, rockabilly, Western swing and boogie-woogie, laced with themes of American truck driving music. Kirchen's work in the early 1970s with Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen helped set the stage for the singers like Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson and other outlaw country bands with his recordings of songs like "Seeds And Stems."Kirchen is said to have "one of the most distinctive, pure-Fender Telecaster tone guitar sounds in modern music". Kirchen was named "The Titan of The Telecaster" by Guitar Player magazinefor his musical prowess on the Fender Telecaster guitar. He played a 1959 model with a maple fretboard and sunburst finish that he calls the "coal burner" and acquired in 1967 when he exchanged his Gibson SG with a stranger on a bus.He retired that guitar in the early 2010s in favor of a Telecaster with a wider neck.

Justis Brokenrope has collected vinyl by Native musicians for the past decade. Now he shares that music with the digital world. “You can listen to music nowadays without ever touching a CD, a record, or a tape,” said Brokenrope, who is Sicangu Lakota. “It's just so digital and ubiquitous all the time. But to hold the physical thing and then to see yourself represented in that, and to see your community, your people, your family represented in that, I think that's just so important for us.” A self-described shaggy-haired kid, Justis Brokenrope started collecting vinyl records near his hometown in rural Nebraska. As a young musician, he played in punk and metal bands touring the U.S. and Europe. He was in a record store in Providence, R.I., about ten years ago where he found a compilation record consisting of Indigenous North American music, and inspiration struck. “I've heard a lot of powwow music and ceremonial music. But then to know that there were these artists back then, pre-social media, internet, everything, obviously, just in their really, sometimes small and very isolated communities,” explained Brokenrope.“They got a guitar somewhere or traded something for a guitar, and then their music was documented by something like the [Canadian Broadcast Corporation]. And so those records exist. And then that was just like, mind blowing to me,” said Brokenrope. Now, an entire wall of Brokenrope's Minneapolis apartment is dedicated to his record collection. Some of that music is being heard again for the first time. And he says he's collecting for more than the sake of collecting. He wants to re-introduce the music he's found back to Indigenous communities. “A lot of people obviously don't have the time to go dig through a bunch of thrift stores in the Southwest,” said Brokenrope. When he finds those rare records, he posts them to social media. Curated music sets go to YouTube, and photos of album covers are posted to his Instagram page, Wathéča Records. For him, accessibility is a way to build community around music. He estimates he has a collection of about 300 records by Indigenous artists from various genres— mostly country, folk, rock from the 1960s through the late 80s. “These records can have life again and reach the people that maybe forgot about them or lost their copy. Or those folks who made them have journeyed on, but their kids are still around and remember their dad or mom playing guitar and singing.” Brokenrope says for him artists like Buddy Red Bow, a Lakota country singer who was recording in the 1970s, is one example of the kind connection a person can make through listening. “As someone who works a lot with language to hear him speak or sing a song in Lakota and English and then to hear his dad on the recording as well singing in Lakota or speaking ... it's just so moving and just a beautiful thing to experience.” Translating Analog to Digital Collecting vinyl brings Brokenrope into conversation with a lot of fellow record collectors. It's an opportunity to build a network of people who share his passion. On a January evening, Brokenrope met with a fellow Indigenous collector, David McCloud, who is Anishinaabe from Minegoziibe First Nation in northern Manitoba. “When somebody asks me, ‘How do you collect Indigenous records?'” said McCloud to Brokenrope. “That's years and years of building relationships.” The two compared notes during their virtual meeting about their shared passion. The conversation included their mutual appreciation for music and much more. Both described years spent digging for vinyl and multiple acts of converting analog music to digital as a method of translation between generations. They also talk about the ways Indigenous musicians have busted through the myths of Indigenous people as the vanishing American and the ways artists have subverted stereotypes and found self-expression. “Our people were supposed to disappear,” said McCloud. “If you look at the history of it, since the possibility of recording began, Indigenous people were there, right up until now.” McCloud motioned to his own collection of recordings and shared a piece of wisdom. “You never finish. You never know it all. You're never gonna have it all,” McCloud said. DJing has become another way Brokenrope shares his love for vinyl. Music lovers will recognize Link Wray and His Ray Men covering Dylan's “Girl from The North Country.” Fellow collectors may know Karen Dalton's bluesy “Something On Your Mind.” Lots of people will hum along to popular Redbone refrains. The powwow crowd will sing every single word of Keith Secola's “NDN Kars.” And it's the dollar bin gems — the stuff lots of people may have heard years ago or may have never heard before — where his collection shines. Brokenrope's collection reflects years of digging for rare vinyl recordings. In his set, A. Paul Ortega's powerful singing on “Chicago,” Arliene Nofchissey Williams & Carnes Burson performing the bridge on “Go My Son,” and Morris Belknap's “On That Dusty Road To San Carlos,” give listeners a sense of the themes important to Native musicians over decades. While connecting the tunes during his DJ sets, Brokenrope adds another act of translation. As an educator, Brokenrope has been a part of a growing language movement to revitalize the Dakota language. He often DJs his sets in the Dakota language. Sharing music of from his collection in Dakota is an invitation to Indigenous people to be in conversation with one another in a digital world. “To be able to use my tribe's language and be able to create more content in it,” he said. “And have that represented more, just felt really in line with the kind of music we're playing.”
