Now then!! What's happening? What's good? This week, I'm chatting to JoJo Elgarice. Steel City's foremost flogger of rare and vintage garms. JoJo's shop Rag Parade sells a really broad range of gear with a real singularity of vision. To buy and sell really nice things. I met JoJo for about 15 seconds when I was leathered at vintage fair in Stoke Newington a few weeks ago but I've been drooling over the stuff he sells on his Instagram for a good few years. Today we'll discover where his deep love for garms comes from and what shapes his tastes today…Last week I mentioned our new Substack on the outro. Thanks to everyone that's been on and made pals with us over there. We've got articles and links to stuff we talk about in the episodes and we're working on new stuff at the moment so go and have a butcher's hook. Big thanks as ever to the series sponsors Trailberg for making what we do on My Own Garms a bit less financially crushing. Appreciate you lot a lot! Go and drop em a follow @trailbergofficial - legends!!Okay. Let's get into this one then. This is My Own Garms with Sheffield's own, JoJo Elgarice…Thanks Jojo for the time and thanks to the lovely people at Eve's Kitchen for the brews and the recording space. I've not really mentioned it on here but what do you reckon to the recording setups for this series? Instead of booking a hotel out and getting the guests to come to us, we've been getting about the country and setting up where our guests are at. Do you reckon it's better? Prefer it the old way? Let us know in the comments or in the reviews. Would love to hear what you think. Okay, you know the drill, we'll drop another mini episode with JoJo in a couple of days so make sure you're subscribed to the feed for that one cos it's a banger. See ya back here for that. X

However this has been completely overshadowed by the mishandling of Diane Abbott's position in the party. This morning, Abbott, who has served as Labour MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington since being elected in 1987, has announced that she has been barred by the party from standing in the next general election. By lunchtime Starmer was saying that no decision had been taken to block her from standing for Labour. Episode 225 - Poe Review, 1 is a brief look (through a conversation with the ghost of Mr. Poe and George) regarding the 1st half of Mr. Poe's life - his earliest years up to Stoke Newington. Originally, I called this episode Catchup!, but I later decided that a better title might be Poe Review, 1. The idea is for this podcast to relate events in Poe's existence up to the half-way point in the story of his illustrious life. Sources include: Edgar Allan Poe: A Critical Biography by Arthur Hobson Quinn, The Poe Log: A Documentary Life of Edgar Allan Poe by Dwight R. Thomas and David K. Jackson, and the Life of Edgar A. Poe by Eugene L. Didier.
Derek "Del Boy" Trotter, chairman of Trotters Independent Traders, employs his younger brother Rodney into his company. Later, at their local pub, The Nag's Head, Rodney meets Del's friend Trigger, in order to buy some briefcases. On introduction, Trigger acknowledges to Del that he is already acquainted with his brother Rodney but then immediately calls him "Dave".[2] Del negotiates the price of the briefcases down from £17 to £8, and tries to dupe Trigger by claiming the price for the 25 is £175, when it is actually £200. Rodney, however using his GCE in mathematics as proof of his credibility, proves to Trigger that Del's figures are wrong. It soon emerges that not only were the cases stolen, they are also rejects; the combination for them is locked inside. Rodney advises Del to throw the cases in the river. Rodney then suggests to Del that he be made the partnership's financial adviser, on the grounds of him having two GCEs (in maths and art). Del, however, is not happy about this due to Rodney's behaviour regarding the briefcases. The row between the brothers is soon made worse by the latter's buying a cheeseburger for Grandad instead of an Emperor burger due to lack of funds. Grandad gets angry with Rodney as well, and Rodney decides to leave the partnership and venture to Hong Kong. He wishes to go there to see a girl, "Shanghai Lil". She was at art college with Rodney but was deported after they were expelled for smoking cannabis, for which Rodney received a £300 fine and a suspended sentence. The next day, Del trawls London, looking for Rodney and attempting to sell the briefcases, having already previously failed with his telephone contacts. Returning home after having failed to achieve either goal, he is soon joined by Rodney, who only got as far as the Shangri-La doss house in Stoke Newington due to running out of money and forgetting his passport. After they make up, Del informs Rodney that he took his advice and "chucked the bleeding lot in the river", but they floated

In this episode, Richard Boon joins us to talk about his life in music, taking in the birth of Buzzcocks, the Smiths on Rough Trade and his time as "the world's coolest librarian" in Stoke Newington. The punk instigator takes us back to 1976, when he went to see the Sex Pistols live in High Wycombe together with a certain Howard Trafford and Peter McNeish. This shock to the system led to Richard inviting them to play his art studio in Reading, plus the near-mythological Lesser Free Trade Hall show that everyone in Manchester later claimed to have been at. Once Howard and Pete re-christened themselves Devoto and Shelley and formed Buzzcocks, Richard fell into managing the group and put out their seminal Spiral Scratch EP on his New Hormones label. We then ask Richard about his move to Rough Trade around the same time as he brought them the Smiths. Clips from Martin Aston's 1986 audio interview with Morrissey form the backdrop for a discussion of why the band were special, their reluctance to film music videos and their relationship with their fans. Following discussion of featured writer Cath Carroll, whose early interview with Morrissey and Marr plus pieces on Linder and New Order round out the Manchester theme, Mark and Jasper finish up on library highlights including Sandy Bull, Yazz, the Spice Girls, and Lewis Capaldi. Many thanks to special guest Richard Boon. Please note that this episode was recorded before the death of Jane Birkin. Pieces discussed: Buzzcocks, Spiral Scratch, Pete Shelley audio, Morrissey audio, The Smiths, Linder, New Order, Sandy Bull, Van Morrison, Little Feat, Yazz, The Spice Girls, Pete Rugolo, Chuck Berry and Lewis Capaldi.
Episdoe 171 is called “Poe - the Stoned Teenager” - This episode is a fanciful conversation via ChatGPT where the character of Mr. Poe speaks as though he wa a “stoned teenager.” I like to think the episode is respectful to the historical facts, but also extremely funny where Mr. Poe refers to “The Raven” as the “Stairway to Heaven” of poetry. The character of Mr. Poe (again, as a stoned teenager) talks about life at Stoke Newington, West Point, and a modern version of “Spirits of the Dead”The conversation ends with Mr. Poe talking about his death. What does the “stoned teenager” version of Mr. Poe compare “The Raven” to? From a Horror Movie deals with the Allan family (with Poe) living in England for 5 years. During a portion of this period, the young Poe lived near the British Museum, and one can only imagine how the ancient sculptures excited his imagination. This episode also deals with Stoke Newington and briefly with the Reverend John Bransby. The episode ends with a section of “William Wilson” that sounds like it could be from a modern-day horror movie! How long did it take to cross the Atlantic during the period?Where did the Allan family first land after they crossed the Atlantic?Who was the Reverend John Bransby? How is the setting for “William Wilson” like the setting of Stoke Newington? What caused John Allan to leave England? How does the “second William Wilson” intimidate the “first William Wilson”?How does “William Wilson” use the theme of “the double?”00:01 Introduction01:50 Across the ocean to England04:30 Time in Liverpool and Scotland05:34 Life in London (with the British Museum)08:06 Manor House School and Stoke Newington12:28 John Allan decides to leave England14:32 William Wilson23:09 Next episode23:26 Sources23:47 Outro
--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/irving-sun/message

Very early on in the life of this podcast I had Boogaloo Stu on to talk about the cult London club night Shinky Shonky. And, in lots of ways, that was the episode that helped show me that the concept of Lost Spaces was going to work because suddenly people who used to go to Shinky Shonky were talking about the episode on social media and celebrating all of the good times that they had there. So, I wanted to bring Stu back on the show to talk about the final years of the night, when it had moved from central London to The Oak Bar in Stoke Newington, North London. I also wanted to find out why the night eventually ended. I had lofty ideas that the conversation would be about how scenes evolve and change, and how things go from being in fashion to out of fashion... but, Stu couldn't quite remember any of the details of that time, so it's more of a fun chat of some of the adventures and misadventures that happened because of the night, and what the ingredients were that made the night so special. There's also a really interesting conversation about what constitutes 'drag' in 2022. Is Boogaloo Stu, a man dressed as another man, with a big blonde quiff and a polyester thong, drag? Or is it just a man in a wig and unhygienic underwear? These, and other cutting edge questions, are asked, and not quite answered on this week's show! Do you have any memories of Shinky Shonky, or clubbing from your own queer scene that you want to share? Well, if you have please get in touch - I want to create the biggest online record of people's memories and stories - go to www.lostspacespodcast.com and find the section 'Share a Lost Space' and tell me what you got up to! This week on The Verb we're thinking about the language of repair. Ian McMillan and guests discuss poetry's ability to heal, putting literary puzzles back together again, finding what was once lost, and the often impenetrable vocabularies of 'getting stuff fixed'. Ian is joined by Chris McCabe, poet and National Poetry Librarian. During lockdown the Southbank Centre's National Poetry Library ran the 'lost quotes' service, reuniting remembered fragments of poems with the rest of the text. His latest book is 'Buried Garden', in which he searches for the lost poets of Stoke Newington's Abney Park Cemetery, hoping to revive their forgotten words. Mona Arshi has just published 'Somebody Loves You', a poetic novel about a young girl who chooses silence as a protective mechanism when everything around her feels fragile. The poet William Letford used to be a roofer, and he's written a brand new poem especially for The Verb about returning to his old profession to help out family. And Kate Fox considers repair and the meaning of home. Presenter: Ian McMillan Producer: Jessica Treen

At one time, Poe lives just a few minutes from the British Museum! Then Mr. Poe and Mr. Bartley begin a discussion of Mr. Poe's hesitancy to write about social issues and not have many of his works take place in specific geographical locations. The Unite union is putting forward a motion, for Labour to back increasing the minimum wage to £15 an hour, to a vote at the party's conference. The former shadow cabinet minister, Andy McDonald, said opposition to the idea from the party leadership was the reason he resigned from the front bench yesterday. Labour sources have accused the left-wing of the party of trying to sabotage the conference. Today's Nick Robinson is at the Labour party conference in Brighton and spoke to Diane Abbott, Labour MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington, as well as Nick Thomas-Symonds, Shadow Home Secretary.
Comedy writer, novelist and Goon Show fan David Quantick is Tyler's guest this week. With Spike Milligan being one of David's earliest influences as a writer he was keen to explain how, for him, the Goons had more of an impact than the Pythons and helped sharpen his comic sensibilities, along with the likes of absurdist playwright NF Simpson. As well as general Goon chat there are conversational meanderings such as: Meeting Spike on Saturday Zoo; the brilliance of Barry Cryer; bringing back Dangermouse; Chris Morris on ‘aardvark comedy'; John Cleese; The Beatles (for a change); David freaking out his mother with his first typewritten script; Sabrina in Stoke Newington and noddin' along to Val Doonican on Pam & Tony's old Dansette record player. In this episode of Rewirement, Angellica meets two more inspirational individuals who share their words of wisdom on retirement and talk candidly about how their paths have been different as LGBT+ people. Most of us have questions and concerns about making the move from work to retirement. If you're LGBT+, it can be especially difficult to see yourself in retirement because of a lack of representation. Fears of discrimination or isolation in later life are often a real worry for many LGBT+ people. That's why this episode tackles some of those questions and issues head-on. Angellica Bell is joined by Matthew Riley from Tonic Housing and Meg Dickens from Legal & General. They talk about why it's important to challenge prejudice and provide support and community to help everyone have a happy and secure retirement. Angellica chats to the active Annie, who plans to tour all of London's lidos after the pandemic! Annie remembers her exciting youth in Stoke Newington and explains why she's returned to live there now she's older. She also reflects upon the experiences of lesbian friends who have led different journeys towards retirement age, and all have different financial situations. Patrick explains how his pension and retirement plans changed when he came out as he approached 40. As a father of two, he and his ex-wife worked out their separate paths and Patrick had to re-think finances to fund his later life. He shares how he found a community he loves and has thrown himself into fun and fulfilling activities, from charity work to line-dancing, skydiving and white water rafting! In ye olden days (ok, like 20 years ago) London used to be full of small neighbourhood queer bars that had more of a community feel than the bigger, anonymous drinking establishments in the West End. And, if it was a lesbian bar you were after then your best bet would be to head to Stoke Newington in the north east of London, which has been described by today's guest as a 'lesbian mecca'. And, who is today's guest? Well, it's none other than lesbian romance novelist Clare Lydon, whose London Romance series has been described as “The L Word, set in London.", so she knows what she's talking about when it comes to London and lesbians. We caught up to talk about her time living in Stoke Newington, her beloved lost space, Blush Bar, which was open from 1997-2015, and why pool is the sport of choice for so many lesbians. Do you have any memories of Blush Bar of fighting over a pool table that you want to share? Well, if you do please get in touch - you can contact me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter as @lostspacespod, or you can go to my website www.lostspacespodcast.com and leave a comment there. To find out more about Clare visit her website http://www.clarelydon.co.uk where you can download some free stories, and mark your calendar, as Clare's next book, Big London Dreams, is out on July 28th.
Turning a pop up success into a permanent site, the challenges of learning on the job and allowing a second site to form it's own identity with Joel, co-founder of The Good Egg. For this episode, we spoke to Joel, one of three founders of neighbourhood restaurant The Good Egg, with sites in Stoke Newington and more recently, Soho, in London. It was fascinating to hear about the scope of the inspiration for their menus and general vibes - from Tel Aviv and Middle Eastern flavours to the Californian brunch scene and the delis of New York City! We loved hearing the story of their first site - born from their successful pop ups - and how they went about fitting out the space and then finding their way in the opening months. We also discussed the differences between their two spaces and how they are forming their own identities while remaining true to the brand ethos, with much focus on transparency and sustainability across the board. We hope you enjoy the episode and can recommend a visit to either site as soon as possible! You can find The Good Egg at 93 Stoke Newington Church St, London, N16 0AS or Ground Floor, Kingly Court, Kingly Street, London W1B 5PW. Recent London upstarts 'Let's Go Swimming' have been causing quite a stir as of late, not just for their polite reference to the great Arthur Russell but for their interesting line ups and intriguing party booking policy. On the 21st of May they will return to The Waiting Room in Stoke Newington, East London where they will be joined by Bell Towers and Ozel AB. The coming months will also see the crew release their debut record which will act as the foundation of a record label of the same name. The debut release is produced by a newcomer, Mackness, who offers up three tracks which look as though they will fit well alongside the musical policy of the party itself. More of that later, we caught up with 'Let's Go Swimming' for an introduction...
