Irwin Chusid is to outsider music as Irving Azoff was to Atlantic Records. Here in Part Two, Irwin gives us the low-down on music rights. He goes into his involvement in a Lizzo song, a Lady Gaga song, and how that led to his involvement with Sun Ra. You don't NEED to listen to Part One to follow along here, but it is strongly encouraged. It provides better context. Once again, Irwin shares with us his tremendous knowledge and his unique storytelling skills. Irwin Chusid is to outsider music as Irving Azoff was to Atlantic Records. This is to say that Chusid is the outsider music mogul. He's the guy behind the guy behind the artist… that you've probably never heard of. However, you're familiar with Chusid and some of the artist's work he champions. You may not know who Raymond Scott is, but if you're above a certain age, you may recall the animated series The Ren & Stimpy Show. Well, it's Chusid's dogged championing of Scott's music and push for its re-release that found its way into the earholes of The Ren & Stimpy Show Creator John Kricfalusi and Creative Director Bob Camp.

"You make a convincing case, Otis". "Ye damn right I do, dear irwin!" Until next time, man. This episode we talk to the man who literally wrote the book on Outsider music, Irwin Chusid. It's a wide ranging and fascinating conversation. In a slight digression from the usual Bunkering I have recorded a new show exploring the figure of the ‘Outsider’ in music, in the term's broader sense. At first I focused on unusual tales: psychic composers, self professed extraterrestrials and diy instrument makers, however came to consider the Outsider as also describing figures who were marginalised: exiles, nomads and the oppressed. At the end of this collation I felt unsure about grouping together people who are 'different', but hope the compression of all these alternative visions inspires some fresh perspectives. This programme was originally produced in a shorter format for Angel Radio down in Havant, which has a pre-1964 license, hence the focus on pre-Beatles artists. Featuring: Joe Meek, Rosemary Brown, Sun Ra, Vince Taylor, Screaming Lord Sutch, Lord Buckley, Jack Kerouac, Connie Converse, eden ahbez, Moondog, John Fahey, Washington Phillips, Bunker Hill, Link Wray, Chiyo Ishii, Chiyo and the Crescents, Dorothy Ashby, Rae Bourbon, Hasil Adkins, Sophie Tucker, Lydia Mendoza, Tejano Music, Hafize Leskovicu, Albanian Saze Music, Shin Joong Hyeon, The Cherry Sisters, Songs in the Key of Z, Irwin Chusid, Leona Anderson, Robert Graettinger, Raymond Scott, Ivor Cutler, Malvina Reynolds
On this episode of the podcast, we take a look at Outsider Music, recordings by iconoclastic and unique creative voices whose naive craft channels passionate music-making. Using "Songs in the Key of Z: the Curious Universe of Outsider Music" by Irwin Chusid as starting point, this episode features some of the most unexpected and distinct music you'll ever hear.
