Charlie discusses Washington Phillips' compilation album "Washington Phillips and His Manzarene Dream", which is his entry for the "Music Recorded Before 1955" theme, it having been recorded in the late 1920's and early 1930's.  Jake listens to it and discusses as well, but gets so worked up and full of the genuine spirit that he leaves the podcast right then to become a full-time jackleg preacher, which he realizes is a bit against the spirit of jackleg preaching, as he thinks by definition is a part-time unpaid gig. But so is this podcast anyway, on this episode of Louder Than Sound.

An Exploration of the Musical 'Outsider'

In a slight digression from the usual Bunkering I have recorded a new show exploring the figure of the ‘Outsider’ in music, in the term's broader sense. At first I focused on unusual tales: psychic composers, self professed extraterrestrials and diy instrument makers, however came to consider the Outsider as also describing figures who were marginalised: exiles, nomads and the oppressed. At the end of this collation I felt unsure about grouping together people who are 'different', but hope the compression of all these alternative visions inspires some fresh perspectives. This programme was originally produced in a shorter format for Angel Radio down in Havant, which has a pre-1964 license, hence the focus on pre-Beatles artists. Featuring: Joe Meek, Rosemary Brown, Sun Ra, Vince Taylor, Screaming Lord Sutch, Lord Buckley, Jack Kerouac, Connie Converse, eden ahbez, Moondog, John Fahey, Washington Phillips, Bunker Hill, Link Wray, Chiyo Ishii, Chiyo and the Crescents, Dorothy Ashby, Rae Bourbon, Hasil Adkins, Sophie Tucker, Lydia Mendoza, Tejano Music, Hafize Leskovicu, Albanian Saze Music, Shin Joong Hyeon, The Cherry Sisters, Songs in the Key of Z, Irwin Chusid, Leona Anderson, Robert Graettinger, Raymond Scott, Ivor Cutler, Malvina Reynolds

Washington Phillips was a jackleg preacher and a gospel singer in the early 20th century. He invented a one-of-a-kind instrument he called the Manzarene which sounded as celestial as the heavens. Little was known about him until music writer Michael Corcoran started knocking on doors and looking for clues, striking gold again and again. He compiled his findings into a book that is included with a CD called "Washington Phillips and his Manzerene Dreams." Markly and Miles spoke with Michael about his research on Phillips and other early gospel blues greats for this insightful feature-length interview. On December 5, 1927, the day after Blind Willie Johnson recorded some of his most influential blues sides at an impromptu Columbia Records recording studio in Dallas, in walked an equally mysterious and haunting musician, Washington Phillips. Phillips carried a homebrew instrument - later described as a “dulceola” but, as we learn on today's podcast, actually two zithers he fabricated together. The otherworldly music coming out of those zithers, combined with Phillips' powerful singing and songwriting, created some of the most awe-inspiring and mysterious sounds ever recorded. It's no wonder Phillips has been covered by Ry Cooder, Jorma Kaukonen, Will Oldham and others. On today's podcast, we talk to writer Michael Corcoran, whose research helped fill in the gaps of who, exactly, Phillips was, where he lived and when he died. We also talk about Phillips instrument of choice and how the dulceola theory was finally debunked.   All of Corcoran's findings on Phillips can be found on the new Dust to Digital book/CD recording called Washington Phillips and his Manzarene Dreams. It's great music and great writing (the liner notes are actually a 76-page book)… we can't recommend it enough. “Where did this come from? That still remains the mystery,” Corcoran concludes. “I still don't know that… you really will never know the motivation of the artist…” Discussed in this podcast: http://www.pickaway.press/fz/wp.html (page dedicated to Washington Phillips' instrument) http://www.dust-digital.com/washington-phillips/ (Washington Phillips and his Manzarene Dreams)

Notes * Like anyone else, I became fascinated by Washington Phillip’s story through the music. So, go buy the music. * I backed into the research on this one when I should’ve just started at the source: Michael Corcoran’s amazing excavation of Phillips’ real story, as originally printed in Texas Monthly. There’s a lot of stuff that links out from his site. Music * Lots of Washington Phillips. * Starts with As Old Roads, by Goldmund. * Don’t Worry, by (Memory Palace favorite) Zoe Keating. * 1979 by Deru.
