For this episode of Songs of Our Lives, I invite Sarah Hennies on the show. We talk a bit about a couple of the many projects Sarah's working on right now - performances of Michael Ranta pieces and her duo with Tristan Kasten-Krause. I'm not sure there are many people with more happening! Once we get into the songs, the laughs start early and never stop as we talk about the Duke of Dukedom himself, Ivor Cutler's excellent use of fart noises, how Acetone was hiding in plain sight, the genius and divisiveness of Bobby Conn, how Daniel Romano avoided the Sub Pop curse, finally unlocking Arthur Russell, Souled American being the absolute greatest, and so much more!Listen to all of Sarah's picks HEREVisit Sarah Hennies' websiteThe Music of Michael Ranta & Sarah Hennies - Live at Roulette (Video)Metaphon website (for Michael Ranta recordings)Songs of Our Lives is a podcast series hosted by Brad Rose of Foxy Digitalis that explores the music that's made us and left a certain mark. A writing and confidence masterclass - Ian McMillan's guests Denise Mina, Kathryn Williams, Ian Humphreys and Len Pennie share their tips and experiences. How much confidence do you need to write or create out of your comfort zone? What does it take to embark on unfamiliar genres - the historical novel perhaps, starting a podcast or vlog, or writing a lyric poem? And how can the great poet, performer and humorist Ivor Cutler inspire us to write our most authentic material? Is confidence a helpful word for writers? Ian is joined by one of our most versatile novelists, Denise Mina - who explores the role of certainty in her new novel 'Three Fires', by singer-songwriter Kathryn Williams (who has pubished a novel 'The Ormering Tide' and also presents her own podcast ('Before the Light Goes Out'), by the poet and editor of 'Why I Write Poetry' Ian Humphreys, and by celebrator of Len Pennie, known as Miss Punnypennie - who invites her followers on social media to enjoy 'Scots and sarcasm' and has a poetry book in the pipeline.
On this episode of his podcast Chris welcomes back singer-songwriter KT Tunstall. When Chris last spoke with KT two years ago, her future as a musician looked bleak, given she was suffering from severe hearing loss. But KT returns with a hugely positive story - cutting edge technology has allowed her to regain her hearing, and with that the ability to perform and record to her very best. Along with this remarkable update, the conversation also touches upon KT's delight at working collaboratively within musical theatre, her love of humorist Ivor Cutler and the delightful Japanese art of Kintsugi.
This episode's guests are Gavin Hogg and Bruce Lindsay and we are discussing Ivor Cutler, poet, writer, teacher and musician, who was born Jan 15th 1923 and so is a close chronological contemporary of Philip Larkin, although their paths never crossed. We look at their surreal sense of humour, their different experiences of World War II, their approach to poetry, letter writing, jazz, public performance and the cultural landscape of Britain in the twentieth century. Born 100 years ago in Scotland, the late musician/poet/author/humorist Ivor Cutler was a self-described Oblique Music Philospher. He released tons of art by way of radio, television, books and records. His work, no matter the medium, is thoughtful as it is absurd, as irreverent as it is romantic. Author Bruce Lindsay took it upon himself to write the greatest-and-only biography on the O.M.P. called Ivor Cutler: A Life Outside the Sitting Room. Markly Morrison and Andrew “Hollywood” Dorsett speak at length with Mr. Lindsay on Ivor's storied career that spans from the 1950s until his death in 2006 including his work as a music teacher, his recurring radio and television performances on the BBC, the story behind his character “Buster Bloodvessel” in the Beatles' Magical Mystery Tour movie, his books for children and adults, his friendship with prog-rocker Robert Wyatt, his shocking habit of vandalism, and artists who have covered Mr. Cutler. One such artist is Jim O'Rourke, who in the first few minutes shares an anecdote about the time that Ivor reached out to him, in an outtake from episode 66.Illustration of Bruce thinking about Ivor drawn by Lani Morrison@3magbrewing @rainydayolympia @schwartzsolympia @old_schoolpizzeria @blindsay @myselfies2006 #ivorcutler #poetlauriate #fave #jam #trafficjam #scottishpoetry #harmonium #geezer #absurdism #weirdmusic #outsiderart #yolatengo #parentheticalgirls #robertwyatt #phyllisking #adoughtnutinnyhand “beautifulcosmos #beatles #magicalmysterytour #busterbloodvessel #organist
The full and extraordinary story of “the Zelig-like” Cutler – poet, performer, broadcaster, playwright, surrealist, humorist – is mapped out in Bruce Lindsay's exceptional new book, ‘Ivor Cutler: A Life Outside the Living Room'. Most of us discovered him through the patronage of fans like John Peel – or first saw him as part of the Magical Mystery Tour cast – but this fascinating conversation covers the early years too, his time as a progressive schoolteacher, the formative influence of Kafka and the Goons, his big break into TV via Ned Sherrin and his immediate adoption by the counter-culture. Has there ever been anyone remotely like him before or since? At one point Bruce reads a section of Life In A Scotch Sitting Room - with its echoes of Under Milk Wood and Sir Henry At Rawlinson End - and there are tales of gruts for tea, his fear of noise, the time he left an overheated hotel room to sleep on a station platform and a Denmark Street agent weeing in a sink. Poet Daniel Cockrill takes Poet Waffle on the road and visits the home of photographer Mark Power for an intimate chat. During this chat they explore the visceral space between fact and fiction to reveal certain truths that can't necessarily be explained by these other fields. They also attempt to answer the Poet Waffle Big Question; Do You Believe That What You See Is Real? Topics include: The Studio Space, Advice to Young Photographers, Storing and Making Physical Work, Photographic Books, Finding The Best Format For Your Work, Exhibition Experience vs Book Experience, Kodak The Dog, Ivor Cutler, The Shipping Forecast, Julian Germain, Destroying The Laboratory For The Sake Of The Experiment, Dom Brookman, Poetry and Photography as Partners, Working Collaboratively, Good Morning America, Ways of Looking and Seeing, Digital vs Film, The Objective Photograph, Editing and Sequencing, The Language of Photography, The Meaning of Words and Images and How We Interpret Them, Growing and Changing Creatively, Family, Being Alone and Frost Bite in Alaska.
The poet Robert Garnham – aka Professor of Whimsy and Bard of Exeter – talks to me about Myles Before Myles, the collection of Flann O'Brien's early work. We also talk about his own career in performance poetry and his unexpected brush with fame as creator of one of the Edinburgh Fringe's greatest one liners, as well as the genius of Laurie Anderson and Ivor Cutler.
Sufjan Stevens is one of the most prolific songwriters working today, and it feels as though his drive to write songs is as much about the creation of music, as it is the understanding of creativity itself, and finding different ways to explore it. He first heard Angelo De Augustine a few years ago, and when you hear Angelo's voice you'll understand why Suf signed him to his label. And why they decided to make an album together. A Beginner's Mind is a record inspired and created by a few forces. Sufjan and Angelo holed up in a cabin in upstate New York to write it. They would watch old movies at night; classics like Point Break, She's Gotta Have It, Silence of the Lambs, even Bring It On Again. Then they'd use these stories to write their own. But they also threw in the I Ching, and a Zen Buddhist principle of Shoshin, or A Beginner's Mind. What's come out of it is a beautiful collection of songs, and the inspiration behind my Take 5 theme of Absolute Beginners. From an epic recording of Nina Simone, to the short and surreal world of Ivor Cutler, and the incredible world of Prince, this is a beautiful journey with two absolute angels. Judy Garland - 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' Prince - 'The Ballad of Dorothy Parker' Nina Simone - 'My Sweet Lord / Today Is A Killer' Ivor Cutler - 'Sharks' Beverly Glenn-Copeland - 'Ever New'

Ivor Cutler is hard to categorise. Whimsical and uncompromising, depressive yet joyful, childlike and curmudgeonly, an 'outsider', championed by insiders like Paul McCartney, he's perhaps best known for his collection 'Life in a Scotch Sitting Room Volume Two" (there is no volume one) or his much-covered 1983 indie hit 'Women of the World'. Cutler often referred to himself as a 'humourist', though his work spans music, poetry, children's books, performative and visual art. A sensitive soul and keen member of the Noise Abatement Society, he loved the small, quiet things in life - bugs, flowers, birds, small kindnesses and cups of tea. He hated chemical smells, loud noises and cars and always rode his bicycle to get around - whether peddling his harmonium to a gig to support Soft Machine or heading to Hampstead Heath to sit quietly with his notebook under a tree. The Scottish eccentric had a distinctive style - wearing plus fours and often with a flower adorning his hat. He would approach strangers offering small sticky labels with 'cutlerisms' on like "Never Knowingly Understood", "Illiterates Against the Nizis" or "Funny Smell". He was convinced that the world was absurd and met it with a unique blend of dark and daft humour, refusing to let it crush his child's eye view. John Peel, who recorded many sessions with Ivor Cutler, once remarked that Cutler was probably the only performer whose work had been featured on Radio 1, 2, 3 and 4. He continues to inspire a cult following 15 years after his death. Matthew Parris and nominator KT Tunstall are joined by Bruce Lindsay, currently at work on a biography of Ivor Cutler. We also hear excerpts from interviews with Ivor's partner Phyllis King and his son Jeremy Cutler, conducted by the producer, Ellie Richold. Image: Courtesy of Jeremy Cutler
Helen Oxenbury is an illustrator of children’s books whose work has featured in many very popular titles for younger readers including the award-winning We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, by Michael Rosen. Helen has won the Kate Greenaway Medal twice and was awarded a lifetime achievement award by the Book Trust in 2018. She attended the Ipswich School of Art and later the Central School of Art in London where she met fellow illustrator and her future husband, John Burningham. After the birth of her children she began illustrating children’s books, working at the kitchen table long after they’d gone to bed. Her work for Ivor Cutler’s Meal One, published in 1971, was praised by Spare Rib magazine for its portrayal of a single mother and her relationship with her young son. Helen came up with the idea of her baby board books in the late 1970s after the birth of her third child who suffered with eczema. Discovering that her daughter could be distracted from scratching by looking at baby catalogues, Helen created a series of board books placing babies and toddlers at their heart. Such a concept was unheard of at the time. From the late 1980s, Helen ensured that the babies and children featured in her books came from different ethnic backgrounds and her work in So Much by Trish Cooke has become a children’s classic. In We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, published in 1989, Helen’s pictures celebrated the joy of adventure and the bond between siblings. Presenter: Lauren Laverne Producer: Paula McGinley

In a slight digression from the usual Bunkering I have recorded a new show exploring the figure of the ‘Outsider’ in music, in the term's broader sense. At first I focused on unusual tales: psychic composers, self professed extraterrestrials and diy instrument makers, however came to consider the Outsider as also describing figures who were marginalised: exiles, nomads and the oppressed. At the end of this collation I felt unsure about grouping together people who are 'different', but hope the compression of all these alternative visions inspires some fresh perspectives. This programme was originally produced in a shorter format for Angel Radio down in Havant, which has a pre-1964 license, hence the focus on pre-Beatles artists. Featuring: Joe Meek, Rosemary Brown, Sun Ra, Vince Taylor, Screaming Lord Sutch, Lord Buckley, Jack Kerouac, Connie Converse, eden ahbez, Moondog, John Fahey, Washington Phillips, Bunker Hill, Link Wray, Chiyo Ishii, Chiyo and the Crescents, Dorothy Ashby, Rae Bourbon, Hasil Adkins, Sophie Tucker, Lydia Mendoza, Tejano Music, Hafize Leskovicu, Albanian Saze Music, Shin Joong Hyeon, The Cherry Sisters, Songs in the Key of Z, Irwin Chusid, Leona Anderson, Robert Graettinger, Raymond Scott, Ivor Cutler, Malvina Reynolds

Are you hanging tough? Vancouver Whitecaps are certainly in it tough and when the going gets touch the AFTN Soccer Show gets better, and longer, and we're back this week with an absolutely jam packed two and a half hour affair! There's no doubting Marc Dos Santos has his work cut out to get this Whitecaps team up to a serious playoff contender and Saturday's latest loss to San Jose showed the gap between themselves and teams they should be beating, especially at home. We pick over the bones of the game, hear from both head coaches, and ponder where the 'Caps go from here. We also look ahead to the Cavalry FC game in the Canadian Championship on Wednesday and hear from MDS on his thoughts after the first leg. AFTN's Calgary correspondent Scott Strasser joins us to chat about the Cavs season and what he expects from them in this second leg. Plus we chat with MLS record goalscorer Chris Wondolowski, the Quakes' former Whitecap Shea Salinas, and hear from Zlatan after the LA derby. There's also lots of MLS chat and Ivor Cutler makes his first appearance in Wavelength. Despite the doom and gloom surrounding the 'Caps we have another fun filled show for you. Episode 05 ‘Some Are Big Like Pebbles and Some Are Small Like Sand’. This podcast investigates extra-curricular activities at the School, focussing on a programme of events that ran throughout the 1970s and into 1990s called Activities Week. The episode is composed of staff and student recollections of this time and features extracts of audio from performances by Ivor Cutler, Bruce McLean and Ian Breakwell from the 1980s programme.

Today's podcast is infused with the two themes of this year's festival - Myth and Legend and the Director's Cut. In the former we have an excerpt from the Poetry Breakfast which featured Moniza Alvi, Tiffany Atkinson, Stephen Halliwell and Rebecca Seiferle discussing myths in poetry. In the latter we feature two great Scottish poets Tom Pow and John Glenday. We also have the pleasure to include a fragment from the Past Poets event on Ivor Cutler with his publisher and friend Tony Ward. And we got the chance to listen to the marvellous Clydebuilt poets Christie Williamson, Chloe Morrish, Susan Rosser and Gordon McInnes in the Younger Poets showcase as well as speak to one of its founders, Jim Carruth.
This month's podcast features two tracks from Edinburgh's SL Records by Thomas Truax and Recording The Impossible, plus a chat with editor of The Skinny Dave Kerr on what's in the music section of this month's issue. Then stay tuned for the first ever podcast recorded by Glasgow's Chemikal Underground Records themselves, which features the other two tracks featured in this month's column, by The Phantom Band and Aidan Moffat & The Best-Ofs, as well as other great music on the label. Enjoy! The Phantom Band - Folk Song Oblivion Ironically for a band that once changed their name with every gig, you will be hearing the name The Phantom Band everywhere this year. Possibly the first true contenders to the Beta Band’s crown - not because they’re trying to sound like them, but because their melodies and inventiveness are equally as effortless. This is but a taste of the eclectic first album Checkmate Savage, out now on Chemikal Underground Records. Thomas Truax - Joe Meek warns Buddy Holly 3rd February 2009 marks the 50th anniversary of Buddy Holly’s death. In this ingenious tribute, New York musician Thomas Truax tells the tale of how Joe Meek, the unhinged record producer (and this column’s patron saint) was warned of the exact date from beyond the grave, and some years after his prophesy was proven to be true he shot himself and his landlady - again on the very same date. And in another genius piece of release date irony, it is released by Edinburgh’s SL Records on .... yes - the 3rd of February. Aidan John Moffat & The Best-Ofs - Oh Men! As if last year’s I Can Hear Your Heart wasn’t outrageous enough, here the king of over-sharing and under-shaving lets loose a beery, salacious knees-up about the inability of his fellow fellas not to gape like morons at the sheer loveliness of the female form in all its guises. From the album How to Get To Heaven From Scotland, it’s released by Chemikal Underground with a sleazy wink and a hand up your skirt on February 14th, Valentine’s Day. Recording the Impossible - Popsex Now Paul Vickers has been responsible for some weird shit in his time, both with Dawn of the Replicants and The Leg. However his latest collaboration inspired by Ivor Cutler and at times sounding like a lost episode of Father Ted directed by David Lynch, is off-the-scale bananas. Popsex is a weird little ditty about pop-up books and filthy thoughts. Out now on SL Records. http://www.chemikal.co.uk http://www.slrecords.net
