Geoff Downes has quite the musical CV. Shooting to fame with The Buggles, then joining Yes alongside Trevor Horn for their 1980 “Drama” album, he then had massive success alongside Yes member Steve Howe with the supergroup Asia. He rejoined Yes in 2011 where he remains to this day. Geoff joined me from his home in Wales for a career-spanning conversation discussing songs by The Buggles, Asia, and the epic Countermovement from the new Yes album “Aurora”. Interview by Kris PetersLet's be honest for a second. When you hear that Karnivool is touring, your ears instantly prick up. They are the undisputed kings of Australian progressive rock, a band that makes complexity sound like second nature. But when the tour announcement dropped, the words Car Bomb and TesseracT were slapped on the bill alongside them, things suddenly took an even bigger turn for the better. This isn't just a concert line-up; it's an absolute musical assault on the senses.HEAVY has always loved music that challenges you—the kind of tracks that don't just sit in the background but grab you by the throat and force you to pay attention. That is exactly what this tour is going to do. If Karnivool is the masterclass in sonic atmosphere, deep groove, and sweeping, emotional melodies, then Car Bomb is the chaotic entity sent to tear the room to pieces before the headliners even touch the stage. For the uninitiated, Car Bomb doesn't just play metal; they weaponise time signatures. Their style is a dizzying, frantic, and claustrophobic mathcore that feels like a glitching supercomputer trying to punch its way out of your speakers. Pairing their jagged, laser-guided ferocity with Karnivool's lush, towering soundscapes and the wizardry of TesseracT is a stroke of absolute genius. It's a beautiful contrast between absolute, calculated chaos and pristine, progressive beauty.HEAVY sat down with Car Bomb's guitarist Greg Kubacki to find out more. One of the topics of discussion is how Car Bomb find the balance between styles and genres in the creative process."I do the majority of the writing these days," Greg replied. "Back in the day, it was all of us working together in a room, but now we all have responsibilities, so I do the majority of the stuff. When the song starts, I start with an idea and put it on the shelf for a month or two and come back to it and see if I like it. And if I like something - whether it's technical or it's knuckle-dragging, really simple stuff - I'll just start working on a song from there. When I run out of ideas, that's when I usually know a song's done. Or if I put the song again on the shelf for another month and listen to it, and I don't find anything wrong with it, then I'm like, okay, it's good. But usually we have so many ideas that we're always working on. It's not like the movie Amadeus, where we're just writing it out, and it's written in five minutes (laughs)."In the full interview, Greg explains why it has taken Car Bomb so long to make it to Australia, how he prepares to tour a country for the first time and what they are expecting. He talked about the live show and what to expect, including what three songs people going to the show should listen to in order to get to know the band and music more.Greg ran us through difficulties in transforming the musical complexities into the live arena, as well as finding the balance between styles in the creative process. We spoke about the early days of Car bomb and the musical climate that gave birth to the band, the first time he heard one of his own songs on the radio and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

This week the people demanded it, and we complied! Therefore, we give you “Grave Mistake: ZEBRA Shoulda Been Huge!!!”. This is our celebration of an amazing power trio from New Orleans / Long Island that has been largely forgotten in the pantheon of rock n' roll. They also happen to be very musically proficient, with a bona fide guitar god in the band that rarely gets the praise he deserves! This episode is rooted in our Should Have Been category. This is a band that Captain Content casually mentioned a few weeks ago and our socials lit up like a Christmas tree. While their first album went gold in the US, they have been largely forgotten in the hard rock world today. We think they should be remembered as titans of rock alongside the likes of RUSH and TRIUMPH! Songs this week include: Zebra - “Tell Me What You Want” from Zebra (1983) Zebra - “As I Said Before” from Zebra (1983) Zebra - “No Tellin' Lies” from No Tellin' Lies (1984) Zebra - “Drive Me Crazy” from No Tellin' Lies (1984) Zebra - “Better Not Call” from 3.V (1986) Zebra - “Wait Until The Summer's Gone” from Zebra Live (1990) Zebra - “K.K. Is Hiding” from IV (2003) Zebra - “Walk With You” from Live At City Winery (Boston, MA 10/11/25) (2025) Zebra - “Who's Behind The Door” from Zebra Live (1990) Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts! In this episode of Reading Is Funktamental, we turn our attention to one of the great prog bands of all time, the Dutch Masters, Focus. Our guest is Peet Johnson. He is the author of "Hocus Pocus - The Strife & Times of Rock's Dutch Masters," a comprehensive, 300+ page book documenting the history of the legendary Dutch progressive rock band. Best remembered for their proto-guitar shred and yodel-skat chart smash "Hocus Pocus," Dutch progressive rock band Focus was formed in Amsterdam in 1969 by vocalist/keyboardist/flutist Thijs van Leer, bassist Martin Dresden, drummer Hans Cleuver, and acclaimed guitarist Jan Akkerman. The group was known for its instrumental virtuosity and its compositional approach, which leaned heavily on classical influences like Bach and Bartok, jazz, and heavy rock. Focus issued its debut LP, In and Out of Focus, in 1970, earning a European cult following thanks to the single "House of the King." Dresden and Cleuver were replaced by bassist Cyril Havermanns and drummer Pierre Van der Linden for the English-language follow-up, Moving Waves; the record generated the hit "Hocus Pocus," a hallucinatory epic distinguished by Akkerman's guitar pyrotechnics and van Leer's demented yodeling. Their third album, Focus III, yielded the minor hit "Sylvia." In the wake of 1974's Hamburger Concert, the band streamlined the classical aspirations of earlier efforts, pursuing a more pop-oriented approach on records like Ship of Memories and Mother Focus. Though roster changes regularly plagued Focus throughout the period, none was more pivotal than Akkerman's 1976 exit. This podcast focuses exclusively on the first chapter of the band's history."Reading is Funktamental" is a monthly one-hour podcast and radio show about great books written about music and music-makers. In each episode, host Sal Cataldi speaks to the authors of some of the best reads about rock, jazz, punk, world, experimental music, and much more. From time to time, the host and authors will be joined by notable musicians, writers, and artists who are die-hard fans of the subject matter covered. Expect lively conversation and a playlist of great music to go with it."Reading Is Funktamental" can be heard the second Wednesday of every month from 10 – 11 AM on Wave Farm: WGXC 90.7 FM and online at wavefarm.org. It can also be found as a podcast on Apple, Spotify, and other platforms. Sal Cataldi is a musician and writer based in Saugerties. He is best known for his work with his genre-leaping solo project, Spaghetti Eastern Music, and is also a member of the ambient guitar duo, Guitars A Go Go, the poetry and music duo, Vapor Vespers, and the quartet, Spaceheater. His writing on music, books, and film has been featured in The New York Times, Rolling Stone, PopMatters, Seattle Times, Huffington Post, Inside+Out Upstate NY, and NYSMusic.com, where he is the book reviewer.

Did Rush's 80s synth era go too far—or was it a bold evolution? In this episode highlight, I ask Richard James, author of Rush 1984 to 2015: Every Album, Every Song (On Track), what he really thinks about Rush's shift in the 1980s. As keyboards took center stage on albums like Signals, Grace Under Pressure, and Power Windows, some fans pushed back hard. Was the criticism fair? Did Rush lose something—or gain a whole new dimension?
We take a deep dive into Rush's evolution from 1984 through 2015—an era defined by bold reinvention, synth-driven experimentation, and a powerful late-career resurgence. This episode features an interview with Richard James, author of Rush 1984 to 2015: Every Album, Every Song (On Track). We explore the band's shift from Grace Under Pressure through Clockwork Angels, breaking down the albums, the risks, and the creative decisions that kept Rush evolving while staying true to their identity. From synth textures to guitar-driven comebacks, and from personal tragedy to triumphant final tours, this is the story of how Rush wrote the last chapters of one of rock's most respected legacies. Extremely good news, the audio is actually fixed on this one. Even better news, this is maybe our best episode yet. We're covering the Texas bred post-hardcore infused prog rock legends The Mars Volta and their debut album De-Loused in the Comatorium. We delve into the concept of this record surrounding the comatose dreams of a man named Cerpin Taxt as well as discuss the real life friend of Cedic Bixler-Zavala, Julio Venegas, whose death the story is loosely based on.The version of the album I have is the Vinyl Me Please exclusive re-press on 180g gold and black marbled vinyl with completely remastered audio that honestly sounds fantastic. One of the best sounding pressings I personally own on vinyl. Their packaged in a nice gatefold sleeve with unique tip-on detailing around the artwork and an alternate cover. It also came with an exclusive 12x12 print done by photographer Robin Laananen. The whole package makes me nostalgic for the hay day of VMP.In the news corner this week we cover the onfolding serious allegations made against Katy Perry by Ruby Rose as well as several others, and then to counter balance that serious story with some silly drama, we discuss the quitting and/or firing of drummer Eric Morotti from death metal band Suffocation so he can join different death metal band, Sanguisuggabog.Instagram - @MBFrecordspodAmanda's IG/TikTok/YouTube - @MothraLunaJason's Discogs - https://www.discogs.com/user/FrequencyShift/collection Theme music by SHADE08 x 80root on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bewQPpTnfgg&list=PPSVHosted on Ausha. Taylor ShoreTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Taylor Shore. In this episode, we chat about his growing up in Tunisia, and some of the musical artists that inspired him to follow his dreams. Next, we talk about why he left Tunisia, and the reasons he moved 1900 kilometers away. We do discuss some of the biggest names in music history, and the impact that these artists continue to have on Taylor and his music. We have a short conversation about why he speaks so many languages, and what he went to university for. Then we discuss all things Taylor. His 'Rock & Roll Academy' in Dusseldorf, his solo music career, and being the lead singer for the band Lastry. Taylor shares some surprising (to me) information about Spotify and explains why Lastry's music is not available on that platform. Being the kind and generous soul that he is, Taylor lets me play my favorite song, called We are Unicorns, from his solo project; and he also lets me play my favorite Lastry song, Space & Time. Finally, we end on a discussion about Jack Daniels, rock & roll, metal, progressive rock, and Taylor's upcoming new release schedule. I really enjoyed hanging with Taylor, and I hope we can do it again some time!

We all know the big names of prog rock -- they're mentioned numerous time in this episode -- and we all know the music of many other names from all over the world, especially the Italian and Scandinavian progressive gods. And Holland's Supersister! But do you know Babylon, Yezda Urfa or Ethos? Perhaps not. The US prog movement of the '70s happened mid-/late decade, well past the prime/peak of 1972 (ish)...but we haven't forgotten these excellent American contributors to our favorite subset of rock music. Dive in with us as we unearth five of our US prog favorites from that glorious decade... Note I: Wow, sorry about the quality of Jeff's transmission in the first three-quarters of the episode…we're back to the dark ages of early RR episodes there. Our apologies! Note II: Jeff's Voivod book, ‘Always Moving: The Strange Multiverse of Voivod,' is now available. You can purchase a copy of the 540-page, 3-pound behemoth HERE: radicalresearch.org/voivod Note III: The Radical Research Patreon page is now set up and ready for your patronage. This podcast is conceived and conducted by Jeff Wagner and Hunter Ginn. Though we consume music in a variety of ways, we give particular privilege to the immersive, full-album listening experience. Likewise, we believe that tangible music formats help provide the richest, most rewarding immersions and that music, artwork, and song titles cooperate to produce a singular effect on the listener. Great music is worth more than we ever pay for it.
