Before she became a well-known novelist, Margaret Atwood was an award-winning poet. She has been publishing poetry for more than 60 years, from the self-published, hand-set Double Persephone in 1961 to its follow up The Circle Game which won the Governor General's Award, to her latest, critically-acclaimed collection Dearly in 2020. Paper Boat (Chatto & Windus) draws on that impressive body of work, and expands on it with poems previously uncollected, revealing an artist who has somehow always managed to be at the height of her powers, and to have her finger on every pulse.Atwood appeared at Conway Hall to discuss her work with poet, editor and critic Sarah Howe. They were joined by poets Amy Key and Rachel Long who read poems from Paper Boat throughout the evening. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Here in the 21st century, death and burial often occur as part of a sanitised process. Death happens away from home, often in hospitals, and funerals are usually tidy, respectful affairs. We can forget that this wasn't always the case, and that our quaint, inner city gardens were sometimes putrescent burial grounds, crammed with rotting remains. Even worse, history contains legends like that of Enon Chapel. This awful story is far from being folklore, but rather a dark chapter in the history of English burials. Since folklore and history so often make good bedfellows, I thought it might be helpful to examine this notorious burial place. After all, it brings with it a dose of London history, scandal, a disavowal of burial practices, and capitalism gone mad. We've heard that any political issue in the United Kingdom is 'just like The Thick of It' and as such we've sought to verify. By watching the 2000s BBC sitcom, or at least one episode of the show, and addressing what it says about British politics? To be honest, it definitely says a lot about Armando Iannucci and the liberal conception of the world. But also: swearing. The final lecture in the series returns to the theme of how insight is derived from observations, considering the cosmic microwave background. This oldest light in the Universe, emitted just 400,000 years after the Big Bang, contains the seeds of the structures we see around us, and tells us about conditions at the Universe's beginning. It will also consider how measurements of the Universe's expansion, made using the CMB, are leading to unexpected results, creating tension in modern cosmology. This lecture was recorded by Chris Lintott on 29th May 2024 at Conway Hall, LondonThe transcript of the lecture is available from the Gresham College website:https://www.gresham.ac.uk/watch-now/first-lightGresham College has offered free public lectures for over 400 years, thanks to the generosity of our supporters. fWotD Episode 2598: Death of Kevin Gately Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Saturday, 15 June 2024 is Death of Kevin Gately.Kevin Gately (18 September 1953 – 15 June 1974) was a student who died as the result of a head injury received in the Red Lion Square disorders in London while protesting against the National Front, a far-right, fascist political party. It is not known if the injury was caused deliberately or was accidental. He was not a member of any political organisation, and the march at Red Lion Square was his first. He was the first person to die in a public demonstration in Great Britain for at least 55 years. On 15 June 1974 the National Front held a march through central London in support of the compulsory repatriation of immigrants. The march was to end at Conway Hall in Red Lion Square. A counter-demonstration was planned by Liberation, an anti-colonial pressure group. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, the London council of Liberation had been increasingly infiltrated by hard-left political activists, and they invited several hard-left organisations to join them in the march. When the Liberation march reached Red Lion Square, the International Marxist Group (IMG) twice charged the police cordon blocking access to Conway Hall. Police reinforcements, including mounted police and units of the Special Patrol Group, forced the rioting demonstrators out of the square. As the ranks of people moved away from the square, Gately was found unconscious on the ground. He was taken to hospital and died later that day. Two further disturbances took place in the vicinity, both involving clashes between the police and the IMG contingent.A public inquiry into the events was conducted by Lord Scarman. He found no evidence that Gately had been killed by the police, as had been alleged by some elements of the hard-left press, and concluded that "those who started the riot carry a measure of moral responsibility for his death; and the responsibility is a heavy one". He found fault with some actions of the police on the day. The events in the square made the National Front a household name in the UK, although it is debatable if this had any impact on their share of the vote in subsequent general elections. Although the IMG was heavily criticised by the press and public, there was a rise in localised support and the willingness to demonstrate against the National Front and its policies. There was further violence associated with National Front marches and the counter-demonstrations they faced, including in Birmingham, Manchester, the East End of London (all 1977) and in 1979 in Southall, which led to the death of Blair Peach. After Peach's death, the Labour Party Member of Parliament Syd Bidwell, who had been about to give a speech in Red Lion Square when the violence started, described Peach and Gately as martyrs against fascism and racism. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:02 UTC on Saturday, 15 June 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Death of Kevin Gately on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Aditi Standard.

Welcome to the first episode of my new podcast exclusive to The Hyphen: Creative Coffee with Emma Gannon. This is a Substack-only podcast focusing on writers and their creative process, discussed over a laid back coffee. My first conversation is with the brilliant Farrah Storr, head of writer partnerships at Substack who runs Things Worth Knowing, a newsletter always full of interesting essays, tips and guest columns that reaches over 40k readers weekly. I wanted to interview Farrah for multiple reasons — one being that our newsletter readers have a big crossover on this platform (according to the geeky stats) so we thought our readers would enjoy this collaboration, and plus Farrah genuinely cares about writers having success on Substack. She works behind the scenes at the company and runs her own (thriving) newsletter on the side. She is also, like many of us, really over the endless onslaught of short form content.“Writing suddenly got rechristened ‘content'. And ‘content' felt just wrong. I didn't want listicles. I didn't want as much ‘content' as you my optic nerve could handle. I didn't want another ‘hot take'. I wanted to connect. I wanted nuance. I wanted honesty and I wanted points of view that were perhaps not always reflected in the mainstream press. But more than that, I wanted a community.” — Farrah StorrFrom the decades working at the top in women's media, she is really in-the-know on how to grow a writer's brand, how to stand out and generate ideas, how to spot trends, and plus she is generous in sharing hidden gems. I am someone who is very bad at doing prior research before going anywhere so I use Farrah's newsletter as a place for quality recommendations. For example, the most useful things to pack in your suitcase, or all the best spots to visit in Paris that haven't yet been TikTokified, or the best UK cosy staycation places that resemble that cottage in The Holiday. She also writes in tandem with cultural moments, such as how her and husband are the real “One Day” story when the Netflix series aired, which then got picked up as a big mainstream media piece a few days later. Reminder: This new podcast is only accessible to my Hyphen members, I made it for you and your support means it will remain ad-free. The premise is super simple: coffee and chat with a guest on the topic of creativity. If you want access to all upcoming episodes, then make sure you're signed up as a paid subscriber to The Hyphen. A housekeeping note: Most people voted for these podcast updates to be included in the Sunday Scroll emails you already receive instead of dedicated posts — so I will honour that for any new episodes! For the other half of you who wanted weekly updates instead, make sure you keep an eye on the app if you want to be notified on every new post I publish. ♡The Creative Coffee podcast series is going to be pretty cosy and intimate for the most part (I wanted it to be something I could make from home) — however: when I was offered the wonderful chance to host a live recording of the podcast in central London (in a library room in Conway Hall no less!) I, of course, said yes!Thank you so much to everyone who attended the event, it was so lovely to see you in person and raise a glass to the magic of the Substack community. This episode is slightly different in ~vibe~ to the other episodes (because we are literally on stage; my usual set-up is me at home in a massive jumper) — but I absolutely loved it, it felt so special to bring you along with me as I recorded the first one. Enjoy!Links to a few things discussed in the episode:* Farrah's book The Discomfort Zone* Farrah's Substack Things Worth Knowing* Farrah's post about how gardening helps her grow* My books A Year of Nothing and The Success Myth* Farrah on BBC Radio 5 live speaking about a lack of friendship* May Sarton's journal: At Eighty-Two published in 1997* My post experimenting with a journal style piece* Salman Rushdie's new memoir* On Aaron Sorkin taking six showers a day* The list of NYC co-working spaces we discussed was in a thread on the Maybe Baby Substack but sadly I can't find it! I'll add here once I do.Thanks for tuning in! Excited to share this series with you. Please do share with a friend if you think they'd like it! This is a public episode. I'm back with a new podcast! 18 months after closing down my previous show Ctrl Alt Delete, I'm back in a different way.I'm starting from scratch, which may surprise some people. Why not launch my new podcast to an existing RSS feed that over the years reached thirteen million people?Because I'm not interested in reaching as many people as possible— I'm interested in building this community here on Substack, as organically as possible. I'm interested in sharing honest conversations, making something a bit rougher round the edges; less of a formal interview, less of a script/schedule and just embracing more of an open dialogue on how we make creative work in this economy. (You know everything I wrote in my book The Success Myth about my definitions of success changing… I meant it.)This new podcast will be for Hyphen paid subscribers only. Even the most basic of podcasts usually require some upfront investment (artwork design, illustration, editing services, music license, occasional travel expenses for guests etc) so your support is how this newsletter keeps its lights on (thank you!) The illustration is the work of and the design is by Paul Storrie. The new podcast is called Creative Coffee because that's simply what it is: I will be talking to my guests about creativity as though we are having a coffee together. It's all about the big and small things that make up a creative life. You can listen to the trailer here and the first episode will be shared on Sunday.(If you want to receive and listen to the first episode — sign up as a member to The Hyphen now.)This is a laid back, honest, no-frills podcast with fellow creatives/writers— simply an extension of this newsletter on the themes of The Hyphen: creativity, wellbeing, work, how to live a fulfilling and content life.Writing is my number one love and my creative priority — but it's also pretty solitary being a writer and can be a bit lonely at times when you're in the middle of a difficult project, so it's really nice to chat away with a fellow writer over a coffee — and it turns out I don't want to leave podcasting behind completely. The first episode will be available on Sunday. It was recorded live on stage with writer and former editor-in-chief Farrah Storr — with many brilliant Hyphen readers in attendance. It was a really special evening, so thank you to everyone who came along. We recorded it in a beautiful library room at Conway Hall in central London. It's been a while since I've done something of that nature, and everyone was so kind and welcoming. A friend produced it, who recorded my first ever live episode of Ctrl Alt Delete in the basement of Tottenham Court Road Waterstones back in 2016. I'm so lucky to have amazing friends who I've met along the way, who I am so grateful for. It's all a bit full circle, really. Now — some housekeeping! Do you want to receive each new episode as a standalone post in your inbox — or would you just prefer me to tell you about new episodes in my Sunday Scroll round-ups (i.e less emails for you). I'll go with the most popular vote:Excited to bring you this! ♡ This is a public episode. Welcome back to the Lecker Book Club. Every month I'll pick a newly released food related book and talk to the author about the process of writing it. I'll also be writing about it on Substack and Patreon. Join me there as well! This month: Piglet by Lottie Hazell. I first came across Lottie's writing when she contributed to the first Lecker zine I curated and published in 2019: Plum Jam, a piece of short fiction about a funeral, an underset blancmange and a broken tooth. I still remember how the piece unsettled me, placing complicated family relationships alongside difficult or reluctant pleasure derived from feeding others; or being fed by others. Her debut novel, Piglet, came out earlier this year and its writing is deeply rooted in what food can mean to us: physically, emotionally and socially. I loved talking to Lottie about Piglet so much! As you'll hear me tell her in the episode, it was such an interesting experience to encounter such luscious, detailed writing about food in a fictional setting, particularly set alongside scenes of such discomfort. The book made me squirm, in a really intriguing way and I loved how the dishes and tablescapes Piglet makes and consumes dressed the set of her home and work lives. Heads up that if you haven't read the book, we do talk about specific plot points in it so if you'd prefer to be spoiler free, go and read it first! And the book does touch on themes of body image, weight and some implied references to disordered eating, so if those topics are sensitive to you please take care. You can find a transcript for this episode at leckerpodcast.com. Piglet is out now, published by Doubleday. Find all of the Lecker Book Club reads on my Bookshop.org list. Buy a copy of either/both of the Lecker zines on BigCartel. You can also order print-on-demand merch at Teemill. When did you last take part in a protest? Perhaps you signed a petition; joined a debate on social media; wrote to your MP or read an impassioned poem. In this episode Lemn is joined by Shami Chakrabarti to examine how campaigners have used language to further their aims throughout the centuries. Together, they listen to inspiring voices from the British Library Sound Archive, from leaders such as Nelson Mandela to campaigners fighting for LGBTQ rights, punk musicians and suffragettes such as Christabel Pankhurst.  Described in The Times as "probably the most effective public affairs lobbyist of the past 20 years," Shami Chakrabarti is a barrister and human rights activist, as well as Member of the House of Lords and former Director of advocacy organisation Liberty. Long ago a path was created by the passage of feet tramping through endless forests. Gradually that path became a track, and the track became a road. It connected the White Cliffs of Dover to the Druid groves of the Welsh island of Anglesey, across a land that was first called Albion then Britain, Mercia and eventually England and Wales. Armies from Rome arrived and straightened this 444 kilometres of meandering track, which in the Dark Ages gained the name Watling Street. Today, this ancient road goes by many different names: the A2, the A5 and the M6 Toll. It is a palimpsest that is always being rewritten. The myriad people who use this road every day might think it unremarkable, but, as John Higgs shows, it hides its secrets in plain sight. Watling Street is not just the story of a route across our island, but an acutely observed, unexpected exploration of Britain and who we are today, told with wit and flair, and an unerring eye for the curious and surprising. Watling Street is a road of witches and ghosts, of queens and highwaymen, of history and myth, of Chaucer, Dickens and James Bond. Along this route Boudicca met her end, the Battle of Bosworth changed royal history, Bletchley Park code breakers cracked Nazi transmissions and Capability Brown remodelled the English landscape. Will Storr comes to Conway Hall to take us on a journey of self-obsession; from the shores of Ancient Greece, through the Christian Middle Ages, to the self-esteem evangelists of 1980s California, the rise of narcissism and the selfie generation, and right up to the era of hyper-individualistic neoliberalism in which we live now.

Lacky talks to Jim Walsh of Conway Hall, which is run by the South Place Ethical Society that was founded (on 14th February) 1793 and is the last remaining ethical society in the UK and the oldest free thought organization in the world. Jim knows all about the historic building and its fascinating artifacts of English culture, especially relating to free thinking and Humanism. Conway Hall has been the jumping off place of important movements and causes – anti-apartheid, abolition of capital pubishment, where public figures such as Charles Darwin, Lisa Jardine and Tony Benn challenged current thinking. Conway Hall has teamed up with Trunkman Productions to tell the story of Moncure Conway after whom the building is named. A documentary ‘The Empty Niche: The Long Lost Bust Of Moncure Conway’ is available from 25th February on YouTube. It tracks the history of Conway Hall and the mysteriously empty niche that has sat in its foyer since it opened. Recorded at Conway Hall on Monday 11th July. Universal Basic Income (UBI), an unconditional, non-withdrawable income paid to every citizen, has caught the attention of the world's policymakers. Trials are planned in the Netherlands, Finland and Canada, and Switzerland will stage a referendum on UBI in June. Support for the idea spans the political spectrum: both the left-of-centre Royal Society of Arts and the rightwing Adam Smith Institute have released papers endorsing the idea. So what exactly is the appeal of giving out free money to everyone with no strings attached? Rev Dr Malcolm Torry of the Citizens Income Trust, Dr Kitty Stewart from London School of Economics, and Michael Story from the Adam Smith Institute to debate whether we should all be on benefits.

John Dee's central lie about his life is still uncritically accepted: that under Queen Mary, like other Protestants, he had been persecuted. This talk will outline the true story, which shows how Dee's angelic magic affected not only his own life but those of the most prominent Elizabethans who shared much of his ‘occult philosophy'. Professor Glyn Parry is the author of ‘The Arch-Conjuror of England: John Dee' (Yale University Press, 2011). Recorded at Conway Hall.
