Social Justice in the Art Classroom with Dr. Lauren Cross. Dr. Cross beautifully, respectfully, and resolutely introduces frameworks for Social Justice to Visual Art teachers working for Dallas ISD during professional development week at Dallas Contemporary. She facilitates tough conversations about subjects many would rather ignore or conversely who many depend upon for life-saving change. She introduces key concepts like hegemony and stratification, Critical Race Theory, white allyship, and decolonization.
The dialogues and topics surrounding the U.S./Mexico border are extraordinarily complex; discussion subjects are inherently tied to both countries’ economies, budgets, national security, and the civil and human liberties of their citizens. In honor of Margarita Cabrera’s exhibition "It is Impossible to Cover the Sun with a Finger," Dallas Contemporary and the SMU Mission Foods Texas/Mexico Center hosted a panel discussion on these key issues moderated by Luisa del Rosal, the Executive Director of the SMU Mission Foods Texas/Mexico Center. Artist Emilia Kabakov, one half of an artmaking duo spanning over 30 years, will speak about her and Ilya Kabakov’s artistic journey. Widely recognized as the most celebrated conceptual artists of their generation to emerge from the Soviet Union, the Kabakovs’ work has focused predominately on late and post-Soviet society, incorporating both painting and installations with theatrical overtures.
