What does the evolution of a designer look like? How do designers find their DNA? For designer Mary Katrantzou, who started off by pursuing a career in architecture and interior design and then found fashion as her medium of expression, her journey led to her breakout collection being featured in London Fashion Week's 2008 graduating show, to then launching her eponymous label in 2009. Today, she's the Creative Director of Bulgari Leather Goods and Accessories. Given the moniker Queen of Print, Mary's iconic designs have redefined how prints can tell stories, becoming her undeniable USP. However, her journey is much more than her designs—it's a testament to the evolution of a designer and the discovery of one's creative DNA. Honest and candid, this episode offers a rare glimpse into the conversations Deena and Mary share regularly. Their friendship is deeply rooted in mutual trust, and this podcast is a product of that bond—two women, longtime confidantes, connecting over their shared journeys and creative philosophies. Under hösten och vintern visades utställningen Rebel: 30 Years of London Fashion på Design Museum i London.

On this episode of the Lead With Purpose podcast host, Tze Ching Yeung talks to Sabinna Rachimova, founder of her own sustainable fashion brand, Sabinna to talk about her career and what drives her. KEY TAKEAWAYS I don't have a family background in fashion or the creative industry. I learned traditional Tartar handcraft from my grandmother who was a teacher but was very into making, because back in the USSR you didn't have the money to buy anything so you had to teach yourself those skills. This is how I got into fashion and why I wanted to work in the industry. I didn't know anyone in the industry, so I had to start from scratch building my network, understanding how it worked, getting support and backing from people. It's always been about handcraft for me: I wanted to be a designer, creating beautiful things, selling my products.  I always knew I wanted to start my own business. I went out there and saw how other people did things, how corporations worked, how luxury worked, how fast fashion worked. You have to walk the walk to talk the talk, especially without the background or contact in the industry. Being an immigrant child probably helped because that's exactly what you're doing for your entire childhood when you move a lot with your family. I saw how the entire fashion industry worked and was able to apply that to my own business in terms of what I can change. I'm actually quite an introverted person. As a child I never wanted to talk because most of my childhood I had to cope with language barriers and I would not always be very confident in speaking the language of where I was living at that time. I was desperate because I had something to say and if I didn't up my game and advocate for myself nothing would happen. Every year that you work in the industry you have higher exposure, bigger network, and with that comes responsibility. It's not only that you should be using it for yourself but what can you actually do to create more spaces for marginalised groups or your own communities. How can you make sure people from different backgrounds are heard? BEST MOMENTS‘I have a naive approach towards the industry, but not in a negative sense, more that I only saw the magical lens of the beauty of creating something, connecting your emotions, your story, the heritage of your family that has been passed on.'‘Sustainability is rooted in my thoughts since I always had that huge focus on the maker, it just never crossed my mind that for other professionals this wasn't the case.'‘In the first three years of the business there was a lot of trial and error and a journey of finding myself, my voice and the confidence to actually communicate properly what we need in terms of change in our industry.'‘People created space for me which is why I'm so big on mentoring programmes, passing on my knowledge and expertise, and supporting the next generation where I can. People like me profited a lot from all these approaches.' ABOUT THE GUESTSabinna Rachimova is an opinion leader for the future generation of creatives. After graduating from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, she worked for the leading fashion house Christian Dior and contemporary London brand Mary Katrantzou. As a child, she learned traditional soviet handcraft from her grandmother, developing a deeply ingrained appreciation for the craft. This early influence was a key inspiration for her namesake brand. As a double immigrant (born in Central Asia, raised in Europe, and now based in London) Sabinna is incredibly passionate about inclusivity and equal opportunities. In addition to her work as an acclaimed designer, Sabinna is a public speaker, spreading the word about both fashion tech and sustainable fashion, as well as a consultant with a focus on fashion start-ups and education across Europe and the UK. Since 2018, she has lectured at the University of Arts London, teaching on the MA Fashion Entrepreneurship & Innovation course, focusing on sustainable business concepts to encourage her students to disrupt the industry. In 2019, Sabinna was named one of Forbes 30 under 30 DACH for her achievements as an entrepreneur in the sustainable fashion industry.Website: https://www.sabinna.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sabinna-rachimova/ Instagram: @sabinna_rachimova ABOUT THE HOSTTze Ching started her entrepreneurial journey back in 2007 with the launch of a sustainable clothing and home furnishing ecommerce business. Next, she created a sustainable fashion brand. In 2019, she launched a social enterprise to help raise awareness about the negative impact of fashion at schools and colleges. I'll never forget the first time I discovered the work of Mary Katrantzou. It was in London in 2008 I believe, and I just happened to wander into a room where a rack of her now-famous perfume bottle printed dresses was on display. On hand was her mother who was proudly showing off the stunning creations her daughter had dreamt up. And Mary's mom had every right to be proud. Her work was unlike anything else going on in fashion at that time. Advancements in printing and computer technology had made it possible for this young woman to create architectural designs on fluid fabrics. Blending beautifully her passion for interior designs and her studies in the field of architecture at Rhode Island School of Design with her Bachelor of Arts in Textile Design and her Master's in Fashion from Central Saint Martins. But it wasn't just the print work that set Mary apart from the pack,it was that combined with her choice of vibrant rainbow colorways. The result was a collection that was the harbinger of the 2010s colorful print fashion revolution. Since she started her signature brand in 2008 Mary, who was born in Athens, Greece, has found a way to modernize trompe l'oeil, help women fall in love with print and color again, and showed the world that clashing aesthetics can be boldly feminine and empowering. This is why powerful women like Michelle Obama, Cate Blanchett, Beyoncé, Lizzo, Jane Fonda, and Zendaya have all flocked to her creations. But Mary's success goes beyond her ability to reinvent her core design principles every season. She is a very savvy businesswoman who saw early on in her career the power that collaborating with other creatives and brands could have in expanding her reach and name recognition. Her recent partnership with the high jewelry company Bulgari on a line of limited edition bags is a perfect example of this. But so is her work with Victoria's Secret, Longchamp, Topshop, and Adidas Original. And her recent decision to create the size-inclusive year-round holiday capsule collection called Mary-Mare also is indicative of how Mary is able to deftly read the fashion tea leaves as the industry shifts away from seasonal shows and moves into a space where smaller drops throughout a year feels more in keeping with the times we live in. With over a decade in fashion, Mary Katrantzou is still innovating and challenging herself as a creative, and her devoted clients couldn't be happier.

This episode is conversation between Zara Korutz and Aleksandar (Aleks) Mitrovic who both graduated with an MA from Central Saint Martins in 2020 during the pandemic. Zara graduated with an MA in Fashion Communication: Fashion Critical Studies and Aleks graduated with an MA in Fashion (womenswear pathway). Aleks spent the past 7 years at Central Saint Martins on the journey of becoming an elite fashion designer earning an MA, BA (Hons) and Foundation diploma in Fashion. He also received the Ye Lin Scholarship and Nina Stewart award. Aleks is currently is an Associate Designer at DIETY New York and has interned at Hillier Bartley, JACQUEMUS, J.W. Anderson, Mary Katrantzou, and his designs have been featured in Vogue and 1 Granary. When launching his final MA collection during London Fashion Week 2020, Aleks expressed that in some ways the collection is a continuation of his pre-collection that was inspired by 1990’s dull office look. Aleks' final collection structurally stands on its own and is similar to the designer who was born in Serbia during the Bosnian Civil War era. To Aleks, “The MA is all about looking inside of yourself instead of looking at outside sources.” He continued, “They drum into you it’s all about your vibe and things you are interested in.” This sentiment reinforces the idea that becoming a fashion designer at CSM is rooted in self-expression and is a journey of discovery. Considered to be an elite global fashion training ground, Central Saint Martins (UAL) is an art and design school in London, England with a history dating back to 1896. The MA Fashion course, launched in October 1978 by Bobby Hillson, has birthed internationally renowned fashion designer ‘gods’ like Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, Christopher Kane, Stella McCartney, Craig Green, Sarah Burton, Kim Jones, Ricardo Tisci, Jonathan Saunders, and more. According to Business of Fashion, the MA Fashion course at Central Saint Martins, led by Fabio Piras, is ranked 1st in the world with a 11% acceptance rate, 56% international student population, 98% graduation rate, and 23:1 student teacher ratio. At Central Saint Martins, the fashion tuition for international students is as follows: MA is approx. $46,000, BA is approx. $95,116, and Foundation is approx. $25,315 (source: https://www.arts.ac.uk/colleges/central-saint-martins). Please join us for a conversation between two CSM MA graduates of the class of 2020 during the pandemic, fashion school as part of the fashion structural system, and discuss the reality of pursuing a career as a fashion designer. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/zara-korutz/message

The collection is the culmination of McKnight's knowledge and experience in the industry, giving women the tools and confidence to style their hair themselves.PhotographersAlasdair McLellan, Andrea Spotorno, Angelo Pennetta, Arthur Elgort, Ben Hassett, Bruce Weber, Carter Smith, Charlotte Wales, Clara Giaminardi, Corinne Day, Craig McDean, David Bailey, David Sims, David Slijper, Derek Kettela, Elaine Constantine, Ellen Von Unwerth, Emma Summerton, Erik Torstensson, Glen Luchford, Hedi Slimane, Inez and Vinoodh, Irving Penn, Javier Vallhonrat, Johnny Dufort, Juergen Teller, Jem Mitchell, Josh Olins, Karl Lagerfeld, Lachlan Bailey, Liz Collins, Marcus Ohlsson, Mario Sorrenti, Mario Testino, Mert & Marcus, Mikael Jansson, Mikael Schulz, Miles Aldridge, Morelli Brothers, Jean-Baptiste Mondino, Jem Mitchell, Josh Shinner, Juergen Teller, Nadine Ijewere, Nick Knight, Paolo Roversi, Patrick Demarchelier, Paul Wetherell, Peter Lindbergh, Phil Poynter, Regan Cameron, Robin Derrick, Richard Avedon, Richard Burbridge, Sean Ellis, Sharif Hamza, Simon Emmett, Sølve Sundsbø, Terry Richardson, Tim Walker, Tom Ford, Tom Munro, Vincent Peters, Willy Vanderperre, Viviane SassenEditorialAnother, Another Man, Chaos, CR Fashion Book, Dazed, Elle, Evening Standard, Garage, Glamour (UK,US), GQ, Harper's Bazaar (UK,US), i-D, Interview, Love, Madame Figaro, Marie Claire, Numero, Ponystep, POP, Porter, Showstudio.com, The Edit, Vanity Fair, V Magazine, V Man, Visionaire, Vogue (Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, British, US), W MagazineAdvertising / PRAlberta Ferretti, Angelo Marani, Aquascutum, BaByliss, Barrie Knitwear, Blumarine, Bottega Veneta, Brioni, Burberry, Calvin Klein, Chanel, Chloé, Christian Dior, Clinique, David Morris, Dior Homme, DKNY, Dolce & Gabbana, Estée Lauder, Etro, Equipment, Fendi, Gap, GHD, Givenchy, Giorgio Armani, Gucci, Hogan, Huawei Watches, Jean Paul Gaultier, Jimmy Choo, Jo Malone, Joop, Joseph, Just Cavalli, Kurt Geiger, Lancôme, Liu-Jo, Louis Vuitton, L'Oréal, Mac Cosmetics, Mango, Marni, Massimo Dutti, Max Factor, Michael Kors, Montblanc, Mulberry, Nina Ricci, Patrick Cox, Philosophy, Pirelli, Pantene, Pollini, Ralph Lauren, Reserved, Revlon, Rimmel, Roberto Cavalli, RMK Cosmetics, Salvatore Ferragamo, Shiseido, Sportmax, Stella McCartney, Stuart Weitzman, Swarovski, Tods, Tom Ford, Tommy Hilfiger, Topshop, Ungaro, Uniqlo, Versace, Vivienne Westwood, Yves Saint Laurent, Z ZegnaCelebritiesAlexa Chung, Alicia Vikander, Amanda Seyfried, Anne Hathaway, Audrey Tautou, Bella Hadid, Cara Delevingne, Carey Mulligan, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, Cate Blanchett, Cindy Crawford, Claire Foy, Clara Paget, Claudia Schiffer, Cora Corre, Diana Princess of Wales, Diane Kruger, Drew Barrymore, Ellie Bamber, Élodie Bouchez, Emilia Clarke, Emma Corrin, Emma Watson, Eva Green, Evan Rachel Wood, Florence Welch, Georgia May Jagger, Geraldine Chaplin, Gigi Hadid, Gisele Bündchen, Hailey Baldwin, Helena Bonham Carter, Helena Christensen, Hilary Swank, Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Bosworth, Kate Moss, Kate Winslet, Kendall Jenner, Keira Knightley, Kim Basinger, Kim Kardashian West, Kirsten Dunst, Kristen Stewart, Kristin Scott Thomas, Kaia Gerber, Kylie Minogue, Laetitia Casta, Lady Gaga, Lara Stone, Lauren Bacall, Léa Seydoux, Lennon Gallagher, Lily Cole, Lily Collins, Lily Donaldson, Lily-Rose Depp, Linda Evangelista, Liv Tyler, Lou Doillon, Madonna, Maggie Cheung, Marion Cotillard, Margot Robbie, Marine Vacth, Mary Kate & Ashley Olsen, Michelle Williams, Milla Jovovich, Monica Bellucci, Naomi Campbell, Naomi Scott, Naomi Watts, Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz, Pharrell Williams, Rafferty Law, Riley Keough, Rita Ora, Sarah Jessica Parker, Sharon Stone, Sienna Miller, Suki Waterhouse, Taylor Swift, Tilda Swinton, Uma Thurman, Vanessa Paradis, Winnie HarlowFashion ShowsAlberta Ferretti, Alexandre Vauthier, Anna Molinari, Antonio Berardi, Anya Hindmarch, Ashish, Asprey, Aquascutum, Bally, Balmain, Blugirl, Blumarine, Brioni, Burberry, Carolina Herrera, Chanel, Chloé, DKNY, Dolce & Gabbana, Dries Van Noten, DSquared2, Emporio Armani, Etro, Fendi, Gareth Pugh, Gianfranco Ferre, Giorgio Armani, Halpern, Iceberg, Isabel Marant, Jasper Conran, Jill Stuart, Julien Macdonald, Krizia, La Perla, Lancetti, Margaret Howell, Marios Schwab, Mary Katrantzou, Matthew Williamson, Max Mara, Micheal Halpern, Miu Miu, Monot, Moschino, Moschino Cheap & Chic, Mulberry, Nicholas Kirkwood, Nicole Farhi, Oscar de la Renta, Paul Smith, Philosophy, Ports 1961, Prada, Pringle, Ralph Lauren, Ralph & Russo, Roberto Cavalli, Roland Mouret, Ryan Lo, Salvatore Ferragamo, Sonia Rykiel, Sportmax, Thierry Mugler, Tom Ford, Topshop, Trussardi, Ungaro, Valentino, Vivienne Westwood, 16ArlingtonBio : http://www.premierhairandmakeup.com/hair/1-sam-mcknight/bio/Haircuts4Homeless : https://www.haircuts4homeless.com/Produced by : https://svnty6production.com/Artwork by : https://www.dvsyart.com/Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/hear-me-see-me.

It was only recently though that Katrantzou fulfilled her ambition of hosting a show in Athens: a once-in-a-lifetime experience at the ancient Temple of Poseidon. Katrantzou joins us from London to give a vivid retelling of what she calls the biggest challenge of her career, and how she draws inspiration from the many faces of Athens.

In 2019, SCAD was honored to host an exhibition in honor of ten years of the Katrantzou brand at the SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film in Atlanta. Vikki Kavanagh is the Global Buying and Merchandising Director at THE OUTNET, the sister e-commerce website to Net-a-porter and Mr. Porter. And the reason she has held that venerable position at the company for almost three years now is because she is a true buyer’s buyer. What I mean by that is that she has the art of buying coursing through her veins. Since she was a teenager she has been fascinated by this aspect of the fashion industry. And it was right out of school, at her first job working in a House of Fraser department store, where she first laid eyes on the glamours women who were crisscrossing the world ordering up the stock that would line the shelves of the store in the season to come, that she knew that being a buyer was going to be her calling. She liked the idea of finding just the right products for the people who frequented the store she worked for, be that online or within the walls of a storefront. To find for them both the things she knew they would need, but also those they didn’t know they needed until she found it for them and those items that they didn’t need at all, but wanted, and couldn’t live without. Over the years, she has proven herself to be very skilled at being in tune with her customers. Be that buying for Fenwicks, House of Fraser, Harvey Nichols, the fashion e-tailer Very Exclusive or The Outnet. THE OUTNET, which just celebrated its 10 year anniversary, has become so much more than just a place where the end of season stock goes on sale. In fact, today 90% of the stock is sourced directly from the brands on buying trips Vikki makes with her team to the fashion capitals of the world. She has helped build deeper relationships with brands which has lead to exclusive partnerships like a recent one the company did with Mary Katrantzou as well as unexpected collaborations. Vikki helped put into place a collaboration between the brands in house line - Iris and Ink, which - by the way - consistently ranks in the company’s top 5 selling brands on its website, with the style icon, model and entrepreneur, Julia Restoin Roitfeld – A first for the company. Today, for Vikki, being a fashion buyer means being nimble, using data to help hone your choices but, making sure to still leaving room to follow your gut. In our conversation, Vikki talks about what it takes to be a great buyer, the evolution of the luxury consumer and the new landscape of seasonless shopping as well as THE OUTNET's role in a circular economy and why she will never understand the appeal of bicycle shorts.

People pleasing is a big issue for many people and I know that was a huge part of what led to my break down. Feeling like I could never say no to anyone and that I had to keep everyone happy was a real issue so I was over the moon when Ryan said he would love to discuss people pleasing for his episode.Ryan Lanji is a Fashion & Art Curator, his curatorial direction on shows, PR events, collaborations and launches have led to global recognition in fashion and art alike, bringing together some of the biggest names across the industry, including Nick Knight, Gilbert & George, Vidal Sassoon and Mary Katrantzou. More recently curating 'Conservation Couture: The Animal Ball Collection' at the V&A Museum, it featured over forty fashion houses including Chloe, Burberry, Jean-Paul Gaultier, and Thierry Mugler. Alongside his work in fashion and art he is the Cultural Producer of Hungama, East London’s Queer Bollywood hip hop night. Hungama translates to 'chaos' and although Ryan’s music selection may be chaotic, he wanted to create the exact opposite… a safe space allowing queer South Asian people the chance for their culture and sexuality to seamlessly co-exist within a club night.During this installment of #tiwik we seem to cover a lot! From coming out to parents who at the time didn’t understand, to dropping out of school to follow your dreams. We discuss chance encounters and how they can change the direction of your life and how pleasing our parents can lead to never fully actualising who we are at our core. The conversation drifts through community and music, to juggling multiple projects and skills where you’re expected to be everything to everyone, to working for free to create and build your dream. We chat cancelling your diary to create space, the fear of loss, rejection and hiding from people in the cinema just to get some peace! “Everytime you people please you lose a bit of yourself.” so hopefully through listening to this episode you can gain a bit of yourself back. EPISODE INFO AND LINKS:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mslanji/https://www.instagram.com/hungama_ldn/ USEFUL LINKS:If you need help with your mental health, please reach out to get help. A Different Tweed: Fashion Conversations with Bronwyn Cosgrave

At the spring/summer 20/20 ready-to-wear shows, the hairstyles Sam McKnight created were recognized as conclusive trends. These included neon feather bangs beautifying Dries Van Noten and Christian Lacroix’s epic collaboration, the striking center part defining Virginie Viard’s Chanel debut and the slicked back tresses seen at Mary Katrantzou’s Athenian extravaganza. We are living in unusual times, with access to a wealth of information, yet increasing levels of confusion and diminishing levels of trust. We are told our viewpoint and opinions count, however, we do not feel they are reflected in what we see in front of us. In striving to take control of our own destiny we end up working around the clock, our lives becoming more rather than less demanding. You may think, how on earth can we talk about fashion at a time like this? Well, the answer is, fashion drives immense cultural and economic value.  Also, when we consider that women, many of whom want a shift in work-life balance, work in the fashion industry and are increasingly owners of SME businesses we can see why what we wear really does matter. Fashion through the ages has shown times of change in one of two ways. By offering an alternative view of maximalism and escapism, or by stripping back and holding close the essence of what we believe to be true and essential. Hanna Fiedler is a contemporary British fashion designer who identifies with the latter approach. Her namesake brand’s understated, contemporary tailoring and captivating minimalist style is exactly what we want to wear right now. With a capsule collection ‘Prologue’ and her first full collection ‘Chapter I’, Hanna’s poetic narrative and meticulous attention to detail coupled with a purist fabric selection makes today’s woman feel confident she can navigate her day with ease and elegance. We met Hanna at the recent London Fashion Week, Positive Fashion Showrooms and instantly fell in love with her luxury womenswear. Made to order in London, from pattern to execution, Hanna’s garments are a beautiful example of uncompromising craftsmanship. In this podcast we find out what impact growing up in Germany’s Bavarian countryside still has today on Hanna’s approach to her life and work. We also discuss her training at the Berlin Opera House and London College of Fashion, plus what she has learnt from working with Mary Katrantzou, Maria Grachvogel, Gabriela Hearst and on Alexander McQueen’s McQ collection. In any conversation about Mary Katrantzou, the words ‘colour’ and ‘print’ are never too far behind. And yet, in reality, the Greek-born fashion designer is poles apart from the maximalist that people believe her to be, as she explains... It wasn’t until studying under the late Professor Louise Wilson OBE that designer, Mary Katrantzou, would find her creative confidence. Now, just over a decade after presenting her seminal Central Saint Martins MA collection, Katrantzou is regarded among the leading lights of the global fashion stage – collaborating with the likes of Swarovski and Longchamp, and designing for the New York City Ballet. In 2018, the Dallas Contemporary Museum hosted Mary, Queen of Prints – a curation of 180+ looks, to coincide with her label’s 10th anniversary.
