Interviews by Brainard Carey

Jammie Holmes in his Dallas studio, 2024. Photo by  Daisy Avalos Morning Thoughts takes its title from a 1981 Gil Scott-Heron song by the same name. Throughout the song's soft, spoken-word lyrics Scott-Heron meditates on the magical potential felt in the moment when night quietly turns to day—on the possibilities that radiate in the first light of morning, as the morning glory and daylily buds open. With his newest body of work, Holmes captures this moment of possibility alongside the inevitable moments of loss that follow as flowers wilt, as color seeps away—the dichotomy of morning and mourning. Underneath all of this,Morning Thoughts embodies the resilience of Holmes, of his community: morning glory and daylily flowers may wilt and die by dusk, but the plants and their roots remain. With Morning Thoughts, Holmes reminds us that hope and loss go hand-in-hand—but beauty remains for those willing to see it, that flowers bloom again in the morning. Jammie Holmes's first solo museum exhibition, Jammie Holmes: Make the Revolution Irresistible, was presented at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, TX in 2023. His work has been included in numerous group exhibitions, including:Afro-Atlantic Histories, which traveled to the Los Angeles County Museum ofArt, CA; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, TX; the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; and the Dallas Museum of Art, TX. His work has also been included in group exhibitions at the New OrleansMuseum of Art, LA; the China Center of International Contemporary Art Vancouver, Canada;Columbus Museum of Art, OH; Dallas Contemporary, TX; and many more. Episode No. 649 features artist Patrick Martinez and author Nell Irvin Painter. Dallas Contemporary is showing "Patrick Martinez: Histories" through September 1. The exhibition surveys work Martinez has made since 2016, including his Pee Chee folder-referencing paintings, cake paintings, neons, and his recent multi-media paintings which often feature stucco, paint, and neon. It was curated by Rafael Barrientos Martínez. Martinez is a Los Angeles-based painter whose work investigates socio-economic position, immigration, police violence, and civic and cultural loss. He's had solo shows at museums and kunsthalles such as the ICA San Francisco, the Tucson (Ariz.) Museum of Art, the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Vincent Price Art Museums. He's been in recent group shows at the Riverside (Calif.) Art Museum, The Broad, Los Angeles, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Bentonville, Ark., and El Museo del Barrio, New York. Painter's new book is "I Just Keep Talking: A Life in Essays." The book features essays on Painter's experience of art school, the construction of whiteness, and a sub-collection of essays on visual culture that addresses topics such as Alma Thomas' life and career, and the exhibition "Soul of a Nation." "I Just Keep Talking" is available from Amazon and Bookshop for $30-35. Painter's previous books include "The History of White People," "Standing at Armageddon," "Sojourner Truth: A Life, A Symbol," and "Old in Art School: A Memoir of Starting Over." The “starting over” of the title refers to Painter's retirement after a career as a top Ivy League historian to return to college as a sixty-something student — first to take undergraduate studio art courses at Rutgers, then to pursue an MFA at the Rhode Island School of Design. Welcome to Art is Awesome, the show where we talk with an artist or art worker with a connection to the San Francisco Bay Area. Today, Emily chats with Patrick Martinez, a mixed media visual artist from Los Angeles.About Artist Patrick Martinez:Patrick Martinez maintains a diverse practice that includes mixed media landscape paintings, neon sign pieces, cake paintings, and his Pee Chee series of appropriative works. The landscape paintings are abstractions composed of Los Angeles surface content; e.g. distressed stucco, spray paint, window security bars, vinyl signage, ceramic tile, neon sign elements, and other recognizable materials. These works serve to evoke place and socio-economic position, and further unearth sites of personal, civic and cultural loss.Patrick's neon sign works are fabricated to mirror street level commercial signage, but are remixed to present words and phrases drawn from literary and oratorical sources. His acrylic on panel Cake paintings memorialize leaders, activists, and thinkers, and the Pee Chee series documents the threats posed to black and brown youth by law enforcement.Patrick Martinez (b. 1980, Pasadena, CA) earned his BFA with honors from Art Center College of Design in 2005. His work has been exhibited domestically and internationally in Los Angeles, Mexico City, San Francisco, Minneapolis, Miami, New York, Seoul, and the Netherlands, and at venues including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the Brooklyn Museum, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, the Studio Museum in Harlem, the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, the Smithsonian NMAAHC, the Tucson Museum of Art, the Buffalo AKG Museum, the Columbus Museum of Art, the Vincent Price Art Museum, the Museum of Latin American Art, the Crocker Art Museum, the Rollins Art Museum, the California African American Museum, the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, and El Museo del Barrio, among others.Patrick's work resides in the permanent collections the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Broad Museum, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles (MOCA), the Rubell Museum, the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, the California African American Museum, the Autry Museum of the American West, the Benton Museum of Art at Pomona College, the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), the Tucson Museum of Art, the Pizzuti Collection of the Columbus Museum of Art, the University of North Dakota Permanent Collection, the JPMorgan Chase Art Collection, the Crocker Art Museum, the Escalette Permanent Collection of Art at Chapman University, the Manetti-Shrem Museum of Art at UC Davis, the Rollins Museum of Art, and the Museum of Latin American Art, among others.Patrick was awarded a 2020 Rauschenberg Residency on Captiva Island, FL. Born and raised in Thibodaux, Louisiana, Jammies Holmes (b. 1984) is known for his paintings that portray intimate and poignant scenes of distinctly American communities, families, and traditions. Few living artists have created an artwork as instantly recognizable as Shepherd Fairey's Hope poster, which has become the stuff of legend as the face of Barack Obama's 2008 presidential campaign. The image, which the New Yorker dubbed "the most efficacious American political illustration since Uncle Sam Wants You,” remains embedded in the public consciousness even if you don't know the street artist's name.  But Fairey has been creating powerful visuals for more than 30 years, dating back to 1989, when he began pasting stickers of Andre, the Giants face over the word obey on the streets of Providence during his studies at the Rhode Island School of Design. In the decades since, Fairey has become equally at home in the art museum as on the streets, bridging the divide between the fine art world and the skateboarding slash graffiti scene with work that reflects his commitment to activism—the Obama poster, it's worth noting, was a grassroots effort, not a campaign commission.  Ahead of Fairey's new solo show at Dallas Contemporary, Artnet News senior writer Sarah Cascone, sat down with the artist to talk about his long career from the DIY skate and punk scene to art world acceptance. As Naomi says in the interview, she provokes the conditions where her work comes to life through many specific choices, but also leaves much up to chance and strives to push the elements of each piece until the whole is activated by the limitations of the extent of the chosen frame. Her most recent body of work, Being Mobile, expresses the movement and iconic form of entities and symbols that seem familiar but also mysterious, elusive, and timeless. Naomi was just a joy to speak with and we laughed quite a bit. I love talking with artists who are so thoughtful about their work and who have such an interesting life journey and experiences to share. https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/4/41335247-836c-4f4a-8a8b-aeca55f3227a/5E6Rt3am.jpg Big Blue 2019 60” x 48” ink on mulberry paper collage mounted to panel Bio courtesy of Naomi's website In the 1970’s and early 80’s, Schlinke danced with the Margaret Jenkins Dance Company and the Joe Goode Performance Group, both based in San Francisco. At that time, the San Francisco art and dance scene were strongly influenced by new concepts flowing from artists such as Merce Cunningham, John Cage, and Robert Rauschenberg, many of whom emerged from the hot house for avant-garde work at Black Mountain College, North Carolina. Much of Schlinke's approach to painting is founded on the experiences that she absorbed as a dancer in those decades. Before moving to San Francisco, she received a B.A. and M.A. in dance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Currently a resident of Austin, she grew up in Dallas, Texas. Since relocating to Austin, Texas from San Francisco in 1994, Schlinke has exhibited her work at numerous venues including the Robert McClain Gallery in Houston, The Dallas Contemporary and the MAC, Women & Their Work, Texas State University in San Marcos, D Berman Gallery in Austin, D. M. Allison Gallery in Houston, the Dougherty Art Center in Austin, and Northern-Southern Gallery also in Austin. Before returning to Texas, she exhibited with the Braunstein-Quay Gallery in San Francisco. https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/4/41335247-836c-4f4a-8a8b-aeca55f3227a/HM9xi2tb.jpg Coil Up 2019 48” x 36” ink on mulberry paper collage mounted to panel NAOMI SCHLINKE and JAMES TURNER Steps on Steppes now showing at NORTHERN-SOUTHERN GALLERY (https://northern-southern.com/2019/steps-on-steppes/) 1900-b East 12th Street near Chicon / Austin, TX 78702 Phillip Niemeyer, curator Show Run: January 11 - February 15, 2020 Gallery hours Saturdays Only: Jan 18, Jan 25, Feb 1, Feb 8, Feb 15 3:00pm - 6:30 pm or for appointment, contact: the gallery: hello@northern-southern.com or the artist: naomi@naomischlinke.com Some of the subjects we discuss: Resonating work Creating an environment REM-Gensler Daydreaming Immersion Studio visits Describing new work Religious art Abstraction/movement Beginnings of dance Studying dance Touring and performing Writing and painting European art tour San Fran in the 70’s Dance experiences Mind of another time Foundational influences Slowing down Engaging with materials Print with Coronado Starting to use ink Quoting myself Ink and mulberry paper Creating a life Loft in SF/showing work Move to Austin Adventurous spaces Collectors/prices Chance/choice Making paintings Aesthetically rewarding Arranging the pieces Name and titles Northern-Southern Thanks This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity. This week:Amanda Browder (of the Amanda Browder show) chats with artists and curators Keri Oldham and Jacob Rhodes, founders of the artist run space Field Projects located in Chelsea, NYC. Listen to our conversation about artists as curators, the current gallery system and the ways these two have worked to make Field Projects a space for innovation and a more open dialog between artist and gallery. Next, Max and Hank do the shortest interview in the history of the show at Chicago Comic Con. Lastly, Bad at Sports remembers Eydie Gorme. Field Projects is an artist run project space and online venue dedicated to emerging and mid-career artists. Centered on short-term curatorial projects, Field Projects presents monthly exhibitions at their Chelsea location in addition to pop-up exhibitions throughout New York City. Artists and curators are invited to submit their work for consideration in future exhibitions through our open call submissions guidelines. Curators/Founders/Artists: Keri Oldham is a New York-based artist and curator working in watercolor, paper and video. Her work deals with issues of identity, religion, love and death in cinema. Originally from Dallas, Texas, Oldham has exhibited her work throughout the country, including: Jen Bekman Gallery in New York, Kirk Hopper Gallery in Dallas, The Hardware Store Gallery in San Francisco, Camel Art Space in New York, The Dallas Contemporary, The Reading Room and 500X in Dallas. She was a 2011 Summer Central Track resident and has received other awards including a 2010 New Media Fellowship with BRIC Arts in Brooklyn. Oldham is also founder of Field Projects, an artist-run project space in Chelsea. Her work has been spotlighted and reviewed by Beautiful/Decay, Gwaker Arts, Glasstire, D Magazine, San Francisco Weekly and others. Jacob Rhodes' work explores codes of masculinity, class and the inherent violence in homo-social interaction. The middle child of three boys born to a car mechanic and a school cafeteria cook, Jacob spent his youth touring in punk bands, publishing zines, and self producing records. He received his BFA in New Genre and Photography from Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles where he studied under Larry Johnson, Bruce Hainley, and Richard Hawkins. After graduating, he joined the US Army, spending three years in Alaska at Fort Wainwright’s 172nd Arctic Infantry Brigade.
