Rob tells us this is a story about a horrible bag, the spine-chilling world hidden within it, and a terrifying adventure into the world of GrahBhag. Perfect for fans of Coraline, the Spiderwick Chronicles, and Small Spaces. In this novel Rob introduces us to  Zenith, a typical kid who finds a strange, unsettling bag at his front door, he's not sure where it came from or who sent it to him. He knows better than to expect his overprotective older sister Apogee to help him figure it out, because ever since she became a teenager, she's been acting more like a parent to him than a sibling. But he certainly did not expect for a horrifying spiderlike creature to emerge from the bag, kidnap Apogee, and drag her inside to the equally horrifying and unsettling world of GrahBhag. Zenith sets off into the bag to bring her back but soon finds a bizarre realm where malicious forests, a trio of blood-drinking mouths, and a sentient sawdust-stuffed giant are lurking within the seams.  Click here to visit our website - www.readingwithyourkids.com

The New York Times once labeled William Kunstler "America's most controversial lawyer." What earned him that distinction was his defense of the so-called "Chicago Seven," a group of young radicals who tried to disrupt the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. But the Chicago Seven were hardly Kunstler's most controversial clients. He also represented clients ranging from Jack Ruby to U.S. Marine and Russian spy Clayton Lonetree, to the man known as The Blind Sheikh, the man behind the World Trade Center bombing in 1993. I met William Kunstler in 1994, when he wrote his autobiography, a book titled My Life As a Radical Lawyer.

Preached by Pastor Jeff Hamling Sunday, September 19, 2021 Walking Trees Introduction: The Miracle Worker (1962): In the movie, which is based on true events, Helen Keller is both blind and deaf because of a fever she had as an infant. She can't communicate. Nor can people communicate with her. Her family hires Anne Sullivan as her teacher to try to teach her how to communicate—to learn letters and words through sign language in the palm of her hand. Helen resists all attempts at being taught.  Sullivan teaches her letters, but for Helen they have not meaning; it's just a hand signal game. But once when they were retrieving water from a fountain outside the house, Anne sticks Hellen's hand under the spout while she simultaneously gives the sign for water on her hand. Helen Keller describes the incident in her autobiography, The Story of My Life: As the cool stream gushed over one hand she spelled into the other the word water, first slowly, then rapidly. I stood still, my whole attention fixed upon the motions of her fingers. Suddenly I felt a misty consciousness as of something forgotten–a thrill of returning thought; and somehow the mystery of language was revealed to me. I knew then that “w-a-t-e-r” meant the wonderful cool something that was flowing over my hand. That living word awakened my soul, gave it light, hope, joy, set it free! I left the well-house eager to learn. Everything had a name, and each name gave birth to a new thought. As we returned to the house every object which I touched seemed to quiver with life. That was because I saw everything with the strange, new sight that had come to me. This strange new sight came to Helen Keller though the living word that awakened her soul in combination with the physical touch of her teacher's hand in her hand. This must be something like how the blind man in this story from Mark felt. After his encounter with Jesus—when Jesus touched his hand—his whole world quivered with life. But it's also a picture of how God's grace comes to each of us. In light of that, it's worth walking through this story verse-by-verse: v.22 22 They came to Bethsaida, and some people brought a blind man and begged Jesus to touch him.  This verse marks a major shift in the book of Mark. Jesus now begins his journey from Bethsaida (a small fishing village on the north shore of Galilee) down south to the city of Jerusalem where he will die on the cross. What's interesting is that this journey—which takes place from chapter 8-10—begins and ends with Jesus healing a blind man. Just as Jesus now departs for the cross, he heals a blind man. A right before he arrives in Jerusalem, he heals a blind man. Why is this the case? One reason is that this entire section is characterized by Jesus telling his disciples what he's come to do. On three different occasions Jesus explicitly tells them, “I'm going to be handed over, mocked, spit on, and killed. Three days later I will rise.” But the disciples are blinded by their expectations. They are the ones who need new eyes because they can't see or understand how God will reveal his grace and glory in their lives. Are we so different from the disciples? We have our own blind spots. It's easy to lie to ourselves about who we really are; excuse our faults, minimize our sins. Paul Tripp writes: “My self-perception is as accurate as a carnival mirror.” It's also easy to be pessimistic and miss the ways God's is revealing his glory and grace in our lives. This is one of the reasons we emphasize Growth Groups at Trinity Church. We need other people in our lives who know us, listen to us, pray for us. People who are willing to point out things that are perhaps hard to hear, but that we need to hear. We need people in our lives who, like the people in this blind man's life, are willing to bring us to Jesus so that our eyes can be opened to what God is doing in us and around us. v.23 23 He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. When he had spit on the man's eyes and put his hands on him, Jesus asked, “Do you see anything?” In my previous sermon, Jesus uses spit to heal a deaf and mute man. I pointed out that while this may seem unusual to our modern sensibilities, in the ancient world, people believed that saliva had medicinal value. It was used as an agent of healing. With that said, the way Jesus goes about healing this man stands out in two ways. 1. Jesus takes him by the hand. Like a father walking down the sidewalk, hand in hand with his son, Jesus walks with this man. It's a gesture of kindness and intimacy. It's also a picture of faith. There's a hymn we sing called “Father I Know.” In one of the verses, the lyrics say,  I would not have the restless will that hurries to and fro, Seeking for some great thing to do or secret thing to know; I would be treated as a child, and guided where I go We want our lives to go a certain way, but faith in Jesus is saying, God, here is my hand, take it and lead me like a child. Lead me and I will follow. You know what's best for me. In Isaiah 41:13 it says: “For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you” Through this simple act of intimacy, Jesus is saying, I'm your God. I'm here to help you. 2. Throughout this encounter, Jesus uses his body as an instrument of grace But instead, he engages this man with his body. He leads him by the hand. He uses saliva. He puts his hands on him. And then as we'll see, he lays hands on him again. Surely Jesus who can raise the dead and calm the storm through the word of his power could just say “Receive your sight. Be healed.: But instead, Jesus used his body for this man's healing. One commentator writes: God is not embarrassed about the earthiness of the human body, and even delights to use it as a vehicle of his grace. • How many parents have stood face to face with a defiant and angry child—only to finally embrace him and say, “I love you.”? In that moment, suddenly all the emotion pours out and he weeps. • Have you ever felt like someone doesn't like you, you always have your guard up; but then when she's talking to you, she gently puts her hand on your shoulder? Not in a flirtatious way, but a reassuring way that says, “Hey, I care.” Your guard goes down. • Perhaps you've struggles with an illness and the elders of the church have come to pray for you for healing. The Bible in James 5 says that the elders are to place their hands on you. There is something humbling, overwhelming and powerful when all the hands are placed on you. Or perhaps you've had someone grab you around the shoulder and pray for you. It's no wonder Paul in several of his letters encouraged Christians to greet one another with a holy kiss as part of the church liturgy. Grace comes through the body. In the book, Handle with Care, the author goes through all the Gospels and points out how often Jesus touched people. She writes: For fear of sinful sexual touch, we limit all or most touch. Yet our bodies are literally aching to be touched. Our bodies are not just shells that were created to house what's really important—our souls. Our bodies are holy and powerful. They are used by God to deliver grace. Jesus used his body in life, in his death on the cross, and his resurrection from the grave—to bring grace to the world. And that's what he does for this blind man. He uses his body to bless and to give grace. After making physical contact with this man, Jesus then asks, “Do you see anything?” The man's answer is both strange and encouraging. v.24-26 24 [The man] looked up and said, “I see people; they look like trees walking around.” 25 Once more Jesus put his hands on the man's eyes. Then his eyes were opened, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly. 26  Jesus sent him home, saying, “Don't even go into the village.” As I was studying for this passage, I thought of Lord of the Rings fans who can't help but think of Tolkien mythical walking tree characters called Ents! It's fairly easy to grasp what's happening here, but it's more challenging to understand why this has happened. What's happened is that Jesus lays his hands on this man to heal him, but the result is that he is not completely cured. He sees people shuffling around in the distance, but they are just blurry stick figures walking about. We get that. But what's confusing is: Wait! Isn't Jesus God? He's not like Eleven in Stranger Things who uses her powers to move things and her nose starts bleeding and then she's exhausted. Jesus can say the Word and it happens. It's nothing to him. Why doesn't he heal this man in one fell swoop? Two reasons: 1. This story is a picture of the disciples. In fact, it's an illustration of the next story in Mark's Gospel. In Mark 8:27-33. Jesus asks his disciples, “Who do people say I am?” They answer: “People say your John the Baptist, or Elijah, or a prophet.” Jesus asks, “But who do you say I am?” Peter answers, “You are the Christ—the Messiah.” They get it! They see what other people don't see! But then, right after that, Jesus teaches them that he must suffer and die and rise three days later. Peter responds by taking Jesus aside and rebuking him. Do you see the parallel? They see who Jesus is—he's the Messiah! But they can't yet see him clearly. No better than this man can see the people who look like trees walking around. They need more contact with Jesus first. Only when they encounter that actual death and resurrection of Jesus will they see him clearly. 2. This story is a picture of us. It's a picture of us because becoming a disciple of Jesus is a gradual process. Your growth in holiness doesn't happen instantly with your first encounter with Jesus. His grace visibly unfolds in your life slowly. Sometimes even painfully. Last weekend, Annmarie and drove up to Hyalite together to go for a trail run on Lake Shore trail around the reservoir. (I have her permission to share this.) I drove my truck and as we were getting out, Annmarie said, “Jeff, don't worry about taking your keys with you. I have an extra set with me. Just keep your keys here, inside the truck.” Usually, I just hide my keys on the outside of the truck so it's not a big deal. But I said, “Ok.” We got out, stretched, and started running. We went about ½ mile when Annmarie said, “I have some bad news. I accidentally locked my keys in the truck. I feel so bad. I'm so sorry. I can't believe I did that!” She really felt horrible. One of the things you should know about me is if you sin against me or treat me harshly—I can forgive you and get past it quickly. No big deal. But if you somehow inconvenience me—now you've crossed a line! And then I tend to walk through what happened—repeatedly—so it never happens again. It's one of my besetting sins. And this situation was inconvenient! Two of our kids had a cross-country meet later that day, my parents were coming to town, we were 20 miles from town with no cell service. When Annmarie told me what happened, I knew what I should do; tell her, “Don't worry about it. This is something I would have done. In fact I've done it a million times.” But instead, there was something building in me that had to come up. I just had to say, Now why is it that you insisted that I lock my keys in the truck. Why was that so important to you? When I lock my door, I always use my key to lock it so that this sort of thing doesn't happen.” We hitched a ride back to town. Found a locksmith to help us. It all worked out. Later, I apologized to Annmarie for not being more gracious. Her response, Jeff, I thought you response was fairly measured. You didn't repeat yourself over and over again. In other words, Annmarie knows that I still see trees walking around. I don't always see God's grace and how he's working and so I try to control thing for myself. And yet, I'm not blind. I do see it. It's just that I'm a work in progress. And so are you. And so are the people in your life. We need the touch of Jesus as it were more than once. It's a good thing to have to keep coming back to him again and again. It keeps us humble and dependent. And that's a good place to be. In 1 Corinthians 13:12 Paul says, “For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; [but then, in the future] we will see face to face.” That is the hope of the gospel.

This episode is about teaching the reader/listener something they don't know anything about. Teaching can be done in two ways. One, by taking the reader into a world foreign to most people and two, by relaying information that's rarely discussed and possibly unknown to the average person. In the story we bring you today, listener and student Danielle Huggins does both. Danielle has Bipolar Disorder and takes us inside her mind while she's depressed. She also teaches us about Electro Convulsive Therapy (ECT). She gives us history and explains the medical process and implications. This is not a reported essay, instead, Danielle relays what she learns from her doctor and her experience. Danielle Huggins is a former middle school math teacher with a Masters Degree in Literacy. She is currently a stay-at-home mom, a student of Writing Class Radio and an avid kickboxer. Danielle has a Facebook page called My Life As a Bipolar Mom. She lives in New Jersey with her husband of 15 years, 14 year old daughter and 20 year old stepson. This essay will also be published in the Washington Post, July 20, 2021. Congratulations, Danielle! Ep #34: Why I'm Quitting Instagram

First of all, I’m not quitting completely. Let me explain… For years Instagram has served me well, and at the same time has also been the source of much suffering. I’ve tried every trick in the book to “keep up with the Instagrammers” and it’s been a fun a thrilling ride. But it has also left me feeling depressed for many reasons. In my book, My Life As a Wannabe Balanced Mom (not yet released), I wrote a chapter about this and made it clear that I did not think the way to end all suffering around social media was to quit using it, I believe the goal is to learn the lesson and perhaps even take a break if necessary. So I’m taking a break in order to learn the lesson. I will still be on Insta stories because to me Insta Stories allows me the freedom to be real and authentic. In every Instagram class and course I’ve taken, they always emphasize having beautiful pictures and a color cohesive feed. Although I’ve enjoyed the creative process of curating my pictures to be in alignment with this effective way of gaining traction and building a following, I just feel at this point I’m burned out with it all. I’m tired of following the Instagram “rules”. Is this Instagram suicide? Possibly… Do I care? At the moment, no. How long will this break be? I’m going to say, indefinitely. I am digging deeper into my soul and trying to follow my intuition. Right now this is what my intuition is telling me to do. It feels right for the evolution of my soul. If I feel inspired to post again, I will absolutely do so. But for now you can find me on Insta stories. This move is just another step on my spiritual journey. Peeling the layers off one at a time. I’ve left organized religion because it felt right for ME! I’m taking a break from posting perfect pictures on my feed because it feels right for ME! I love all the amazing talented photographers who continue to use their creative juices to keep things fresh. I'm in no way shaming those who post pretty pics, because I'm sure when I come back, I will continue sharing my best pics. I will still be ON instagram engaging with you wonderful peeps. I’m not REALLY going anywhere, I’m just choosing not to post on my feed. For me I feel I’m more drawn to Podcasting and that’s where I’m choosing to put my focus.

Intro Hi everyone and welcome to Books Between - a podcast for teachers, parents, librarians, and anyone who wants to connect kids between 8-12 to books they’ll love.  I’m your host, Corrina Allen - a teacher, a mom, and spending a lovely weekend with my family inside away from the bitter cold playing epic games of Sorry and watching all the Star Wars movies. Again. This is Episode #41 and today I’m sharing with you some fabulous 2018 titles to look forward to this year and an awesome interview with EngiNerds author Jarrett Lerner! Book Talk - Most Anticipated Middle Grade Books of 2018 Typically in this segment, I share with you a few books centered around a theme. And during the last few episodes I was all about looking back at some of the best middle grade fiction and graphic novels of 2017. (If you missed those, go check out episodes #39 and #40.) But this week I want to talk about some of the most anticipated books of the upcoming year.  Some are long-awaited sequels or new installments in well-loved series. Some are new ventures for favorite authors. And some are by debut authors. So, buckle up and and get ready to add to your wish list. And just a reminder - before you scramble for a pen and paper. You can find every book mentioned here AND a picture of the available covers AND a link to pre-order them right through the Books Between Podcast link at AlltheWonders.com.  I’ve got your back, I know you’re busy, so it’s all right there for you.  And I’ve come to really love pre-ordering - it helps out favorite authors and it’s like a little gift to your future self. Two quick things to mention before I start. One - this is just a sampling of all the incredible books coming out this year. I’ll add some links to some great resources in the shownotes where you can find more complete listings of titles to browse through and discover some gems: http://www.readbrightly.com/middle-grade-books-2018/ https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/98185.Middle_Grade_Novels_of_2018 https://mgbookvillage.org/2018releasedates/ https://electriceighteens.com/ And second - publication dates do change, so while I’ve mentioned the book release month - things sometimes change. All right - let’s get to it! Coming in January… Let’s start with the some sequels because there are some AWESOME sequels coming our way to give us something to look forward to during this dreary month…. Linda William’s Jackson’s follow-up to Midnight Without a Moon - A Sky Full of Stars is out this January as Rose struggles with the way to face the rising racial tensions in her community. Ooooo - and the new Fenway & Hattie is out this January!!!  I just can’t get enough of that little dog!  This third one is called Up to New Tricks so definitely snag that one for your Fenway fans - and for you, too! And Gordon Korman’s Supergifted is also set for a January release - this is the sequel to Ungifted - a great book about a boy named Donovan who is mistakenly transfering into a gifted program and has to figure out how to pass as brilliant.  This follow up is about his new friend, Noah. We are also getting another Terrible Two book in January - Terrible Two Go Wild! And a new Spy on History book - Victor Dowd and the World War II Ghost Army! Ah!  And we a get a new HiLo book this January! It’s called Waking the Monsters! (As my husband said - yeah, that sounds like what I do every weekday.) Our 8 year old is SUPER psyched about this new book! - so keep ‘em coming Judd Winick! Okay - and it’s not really a sequel BUT - there is just released a GRAPHIC NOVEL version of the first The Wings of Fire book - ahhhh!!!  It’s illustrated by Mike Holmes and my students are going to FREAK when I tell them  tomorrow. Some other January releases that are looking fabulous are…. Betty Before X  - an historical fiction novel set in the 40s about 11-year-old Betty Shabazz - future civil rights leader.  This one is written by her daughter, Ilyasah Shabazz with Renee Watson Winterhouse by debut author Ben Guterson - this is an urban fantasy mystery set in a magical hotel containing a huge library with secrets to discover. We are also getting the first middle grade book by picture book author Angela Dominguez called Stella Diaz Has Something to Say! Another novel that looks REALLY interesting is called TBH, This is SO Awkward by Lisa Greenwald and it’s told entirely in texts.  So I definitely need to check that one out. And my friend Emily Montjoy has been raving about Just Like Jackie by Lindsey Stoddard so I’m looking forward to my turn with that one. Also - Leslie Connor, the author of the critically-acclaimed All Rise for the Honorable Perry T. Cook, has a new novel out in January called The Truth as Told By Mason Butte - so definitely check that one out. Natalie Lloyd also has a new novel coming out this January! So if you liked A Snicker of Magic or The Key to Extraordinary, look for The Problim Children - which is described as a mix between Lemony Snicket and the Addams Family... Annnd - the new Elly Swartz novel - Smart Cookie!!  I had a chance to read an ARC of this one with my daughters and oh I can’t wait for it to be out in the world! On to February … One that I’ve had a chance to read ahead of time is Playing Atari with Saddam Hussein by Jennifer Roy and Ali Fadhil.  I’ll talk more about this book later when I have time to really go into depth, but for now I’ll just say - preorder it. A great historical fiction about an Iraqi boy during the first Gulf War. Then we have The Serpent’s Secret by Sayantani DasGupta - a fantasy about a New Jersey girl discovering that she may, in fact, be an Indian princess. The 11:11 Wish by Kim Tomsic looks really fun. It’s about a dorky math nerd who vows to reinvent herself at her new school. And when she makes a wish as the clock strikes 11:11, she gets granted a magical object that might help her. Shannon Hitchcock, author of Ruby Lee & Me has a new novel coming out in February - this one is call One True Way. Another one to look out for in February is Becoming Madeleine: A Biography of the Author of A Wrinkle in Time by Her Granddaughters. With all the buzz about Wrinkle in Time with the new movie coming out, this book looks really great. Aaand - we get a new John David Anderson novel in February!! This one (Granted) is so different from Ms. Bixby or Posted, but I just loved it! It’s a fantasy novel about a fierce fairy named Ophelia Delphinium Fidgets who runs into some trouble as she attempts to grant her first wish. In March, there are so books I am really looking forward to! My principal won’t mind if a take a month-long reading sabbatical, right? Like Vanessa is the debut novel by author Tami Charles - it’s set in 1983 and is about a young girl inspired by seeing Vanessa Williams get crowned Miss America and is encouraged by her teacher to enter a beauty pageant. Lauren Magaziner has a new book out in March called Wizardmatch that looks like a fun fantasy. And The Science of Breakable Things by debut author Tae Keller looks really good - a book about a scientifically minded girl competing in an egg-drop contest AND using those skills to try to help her mom deal with her struggles. In March we also get Colby Sharp’s Creativity Project! An “awesometastic” collection of short stories developed from the author’s prompts to each other. It is a fantastic read and such a clever idea!  Definitely one that teachers will want on hand to spark your writers’ imaginations. The Train of Lost Things  by Ammi Joan-Paquette is another favorite of my #BookVoyage friend Emily Montjoy - who has amazing taste by the way. (Definitely go follow her on Twitter @mrsmontjoyreads ! ) So I’m looking forward to a chance to read this one as well. Oh! And the next Dan Gemeinhart novel comes out in March!! It is called Good Dog and I can’t read the synopsis to you or I’ll start crying but it sounds simply wonderful. Of course it is - it’s Dan Gemeinhart! March lets us reconnect with some favorite characters with a great bunch of sequels coming out. We get a new Emily Windsnap book, Emily Windsnap and the Falls of Forgotten Island. And a new Star Scouts graphic novel - League of Lasers   The third Narwhal and Jelly book (Peanut Butter and Jelly) come out.   The 78-Story Treehouse as well as a new Dory Fantasmagory book called Head in the Clouds along with a new Stick Dog Stick Dog Crashes a Party.   We also get Elana Arnold’s follow up to A Boy Called Bat - Bat and the Waiting Game   And - probably the book that I have been waiting and waiting for. DYING to read with my daughters - is The Wild Robot Escapes - the sequel to Peter Brown’s incredible The Wild Robot!  So - mark your calendars for March 13th, pre-order this one, AND - if you haven’t yet read the first one…. well, what’s the matter with you? Get on that! In April we have lots to look forward to including sequels, like: The next Moon Base Alpha book called Waste of Space, Janet Tashjian’s My Life As a YouTuber , and Jasmine Toguchi, Drummer Girl will be out. And Adrienne’s Kress’ second Explorers book - The Reckless Rescue!   And the third book in Jason Reynold’s incredible Track series will be out! It’s called Sunny and follows “the chillest dude on the Defenders team”, but one with a troubled life at home that hides behind that sunny smile. And, the debut by Laurie Morrison and Cordelia Jenson, called Every Shiny Thing looks really really good…. I’m also looking forward to the new Jewell Parker Rhodes novel called Ghost Boys. It’s about a young boy who is killed by the police when they mistake his toy gun for the real thing. And as a ghost, he witnesses how that event unfolds in his neighborhood and meets other ghosts like Emmett Till. Oh that gives me chills just thinking about it! And - we get a new Kwame Alexander novel this year!  It is called Rebound - the much-awaiting prequel to his Newbery-winning The Crossover. This one about Josh and Jordan’s father, Chuck Bell. On to the awesome May releases to watch for: Terri Libenson’s new graphic novel - Positively Izzy looks great- it’s the companion to Invisible Emmie. And the The Cobalt Prince, the second 5 Worlds graphic novel will be out. Another May release that I am so so excited about is Most Valuable Players - the next Phil Bildner Rip & Red book. There are three books coming in May that have been getting a lot buzz lately - one is called Bob - written by Wendy Mass and Rebecca Stead. I can’t wait to see the awesomeness THAT collaboration brings! The second one is Aisha Saeed’s middle-grade debut, Amal Unbound, which is about a Pakistani girl forced into working as an indentured servant to pay off her family’s debts. Friends who have read this one are saying it is  incredible. And then I keep hearing about Front Desk by Kelly Yang. Let me just read you a bit from the description and tell me this doesn’t sound AMAZING! Okay, “Mia Tang has a lot of secrets. Number 1-She lives in a motel, not a big house. Number 2- Her parents hide immigrants. Number 3-She wants to be a writer.” In June we have some really cool books coming our way: Kate Messner’s new novel Breakout - based on some details from the real-life (and close to home for me) breakout of two prisoners in New York and how the community reacts to that situation. I can’t WAIT for this one!!   Also - Kate Beasley (of Gertie’s Leap to Greatness) and Dan Santat (of a million books you love, most recently the picture book After the Fall) are teaming up for a book called Lions & Liars - about a boy named Frederick who is sent to a disciplinary camp for troublesome boys. That one looks phenomenal!   And Laura Shovan’s new book Takedown is coming this June!  Can’t wait to read this novel about a girl who wants to join the wrestling team. I keep hearing people raving about it on Twitter. And Barbara Dee has a new novel coming out in June called Everything I Know About You.   We also get to read Wendy McLeod MacKnight’s new middle grade novel The Frame-up! I had a chance to read this one this past fall and it is phenomenal. It’s about a young artist who goes to live with his father for the summer and attends an art-camp at the museum where his father is the director. And he soon discovers that the paintings are alive! Truly - after reading this book, I’ll never look at another painting the same way again.  It’s so so good!   And thankfully I have July and August off from school, so I can catch up AND snag some summer release books such as…. Cindy Baldwin’s debut  - Where the Watermelons Grow And my daughter will be thrilled to know there will be a new Dog Man this summer called Lord of the Fleas!   Oh! And Denis Markell, author of Click Here to Start has a new novel coming this summer called The Game Masters of Garden Place. Also this summer is a cool book called Marcus Vega Doesn’t Speak Spanish by Pablo Cartaya. Let me read you a blurb: “Marcus Vega is six feet tall, 180 pounds, and the owner of a premature mustache. When you look like this and you're only in the eighth grade, you're both a threat and a target.” And the rest of the description is so good - definitely check this one out. This August we also get a new Jess Keating book! This one is called Cute as an Axolotl: Discovering the World's Most Adorable Animals So after August, specific publication dates get a little harder to come by. BUT - a few things have popped up. Like.. A new Last Kids on Earth book called The Last Kids on Earth and the Cosmic Beyond   The new Nameless City graphic novel called The Divided Earth   The Vanderbeekers and the Hidden Garden!! A new Beatrice Zinker book! And I can’t wait for Jarrett Krosoczka's graphic novel memoir coming out called Hey, Kiddo.   Also - I saw, I think... a Sarah Weeks has a sequel to So B. It coming out called Soof? That is definitely on my radar!   And the big news in my class this week - the 8th Amulet book!!!!!! Woohoo!!!  Oh my gosh - my students cheered when I told them that Kazu Kibuishi announced this on Twitter last week!  It is called Supernova and has a beautiful cover so go check that out and make all your middle grade readers happy by pre-ordering it now. So so much to look forward to this year! And of course - I’ll keep you posted about all the amazing books headed our way so we can stay up to date. And definitely make sure you check out the show notes and check out those links so you can dive deeper and discover awesome new books that you are looking forward to reading this year. Main Topic - A Conversation with Jarrett Lerner This week I am so excited to welcome to the show Jarrett Lerner - author of the fantastic middle grade novel EngiNerds. We chat about his plans for the sequel, the power of the perfect metaphor, and Project Runway! Take a listen….. Interview Outline: Enginerds Enginerds has been getting all kinds of love lately - congratulations!! I saw Colby Sharp used Enginerds as his example in his 5 ways to support authors you love video. For those who aren’t (yet!) familiar with Enginerds, can you tell what this story is about? What was your thought process like when deciding what your robots would look like and act like? Enginerds is in a long and glorious line of children’s books and movies and TV shows featuring robots. What are some of your favorites? We are getting a book two, right?! Other Middle Grade Projects So I saw on Twitter last month that you have teamed up with Analiese Avery (@_AJAvery) to launch @MG_BookBot. How did that get started and what are your plans?   And I am so excited about your new middle grade focused website -  MG Book Village!  Aside from the twitter hashtags, what are you hoping to include on the site? Tell me about your KidLit Mentorship Project…. Project Runway Your Writing Life What is your writing process like? What are you working on now? Your Reading Life One of the things I talk about a lot with other educators is the power of that one person to really influence a child’s reading life - either in a really positive way or sometimes in a negative way. Was there someone in your life who impacted you as a reader? What have you been reading lately that you’ve liked? STEVE MARTIN MARTIN SHORT  Every once in awhile a concert comes along you just can’t pass up. When I saw the Steve Martin Martin Short concert was headed for Nashville, I jumped at the chance to see these two funny legends. To top it off, the show was at the historic Grand Ole Opry. Done! In full disclosure I should tell you that I am 48 years old. When Steve Martin performed “King Tut” and “Wild & Crazy Guy” on Saturday Night Live I instantly became a comedy fan. It was probably the first time I saw a grown man act like a child and it was infectious. It was pre-VCR days in the Roberts household, so I would place my cassette recorder (the rectangular, black, five button kind) next to the TV and magically capture the insanity. I listened back so much I wore that tape out.   So, what did I think of the live show? It was great. Non-stop laughs for two hours does a body good. They delivered and it was worth my $91 upper balcony ticket. Yes, ninety-one dollars. I have missed out on too many great shows by being frugal. No more. Just like they mention in their show, this was the “See ‘em Before They Die” tour I love the experience of being in the audience. I think it’s important for every performer to sit, watch and enjoy other performances. No matter how hard I try, though, I can’t just sit and enjoy a show. Being a stand-up comedian for going on twenty-seven years just gets in the way sometimes. The good news, as I was enjoying the show I was making mental notes of what I could learn from the experience. Hopefully you will find some value in the specifics I list below. A more detailed analysis is posted at www.schooloflaughs.com . Here are “9 Showbiz Lessons From Steve Martin & Martin Short in Concert” #1) KEEP WORKING These two guys continue to work and those gigs lead to more gigs. They stay on the radar. They stay relevant. As tempting as it is to fold up the circus tent and quit comedy, you can always get better if you keep working.   #2) A COMEDY BUDDY KEEPS YOU HUMBLE A comedy buddy can help keep you from getting too arrogant. In the show the two comedians trade affectionate barbs and reminders of their failures and miscues. They also keep each other rooted in reality. A comedian who stays isolated can begin to think they are bigger or better than they actually are. #3) YOU ARE NEVER TOO OLD, OR TOO BIG Martin short just turned 67 and Steve Martin is 72. Just like the characters in the Three Amigos these two guys could have cashed out many years ago and rode off into the sunset. Instead, they continue to explore their age and experiences for new bits, characters and laughs.   #4) USE YOUR WHOLE LIFE AS MATERIAL Many jokes and stories during the concert were about experiences these fellows had before making it big. A quick slideshow full of childhood photos allowed them both to use their razor sharp wit to comment on the “pre-Hollywood” versions of themselves. Giving an audience a glimpse into their early days is both fun and endearing. #5) DEVELOP A “SECOND SKILL” I love artists who are multi-dimensional. Steve Martin’s ability to play banjo, tell jokes, act, write, perform and interject off the cuff remarks make his performances satisfying. Martin Short can sing, dance, embody a character, perform and captivate with the best of them. Had this just been two hours of story telling or joke slinging, it wouldn’t have had nearly the impact. #6) SHINE YOUR SPOTLIGHT ON SOMEONE ELSE The loudest, longest standing ovation during the show wasn’t for Steve or Marty. No, the incredible show of appreciation was for fiddle player Nicky Sanders. And it was well deserved. With Short and Martin offstage the band kicked into high gear and Sanders took over like Charlie Daniels on triple mocha latte. He even wove in a few notes of “Johnnie B. Goode” to pay homage to Chuck Berry who passed away just days earlier. #7) KNOW WHO AND WHAT YOU ARE As an entertainer evolves, so does his or her stage persona. At least, if you are truly an artist it will. Knowing who and what you are means being in touch with where you are NOW. #8) CONTINUE TO GROW ARTISTICALLY These two artists continue to grow and explore their gifts. Although Steve Martin has been playing banjo for most of his life, it wasn’t until 10 years ago he played onstage with other musicians. It’s not as easy as it sounds. It was a risk, one that paid off. Martin Short continues to develop characters and star in shows such as “Marty & Maya” where he and Maya Rudolph take on hipsters, nature lovers and everyone in between. #9) UPDATE YOUR PROMO PHOTO In one of the funnier early moments Steve Martin congratulates Martin Short on his promo photo. He said he had asked for a digital copy of it but it was taken before the digital age. Indeed, the headshot was at least fifteen years old. Short told Steve he had advantage because he has looked the same sine he was thirty years old. But it was indeed a jab that landed because it was 100% true.   IN SUMMARY Overall, the concert was a truly satisfying experience. I would definitely recommend it to any current or aspiring entertainer (comedy or otherwise). It definitely motivated me to write more, take more chances and develop more bits. Luckily for me, my head shot is good to go (I must say). LINKS AND PARTING NOTES Steve Martin is offering a master class in comedy. If you are interested, here is a link:  STEVE MARTIN MASTER CLASS If you would like to read more about Martin Short check out his book, “I Must Say, My Life As a Humble Comedy Legend” In this engagingly witty, wise, and heartfelt memoir, Martin Short tells the tale of how a showbiz- obsessed kid from Canada transformed himself into one of Hollywood's favorite funnymen, known to his famous peers as the "comedian's comedian." I highly recommend Steve Martin’s biography, “Born Standing Up: A Comic's Life (Unabridged)” Martin illuminates the sacrifice, discipline, and originality that made him an icon and informs his work to this day. To be this good, to perform so frequently, was isolating and lonely.   AUSTIN, TX SCHOOL OF LAUGHS APPEARANCE If you are in the Austin, TX area, please come out for a crash course in stand-up comedy techniques.
