The mother of a Frisco high school student accused of fatally stabbing a fellow athlete during a track meet earlier this month spoke publicly for the first time on Wednesday, describing how her family has been “under attack” by a wave of racist harassment, false accusations and death threats. On Thursday, a “swatting” call was made to an address linked to the family of Austin Metcalf, the Frisco teenager who was fatally stabbed. Frisco police said officers responded earlier in the evening to a gunshot call to an address involving Austin Metcalf's family. A police spokesperson said the call turned out to be false. In other news, Dallas ISD officials said that the shooting at Wilmer-Hutchins High School that sent several students to the hospital might not have been preventable. Dallas ISD police Chief Albert Martinez said at a news conference Thursday morning that all doors at this campus were “locked and secured,” meaning the door could not be opened from the outside but could be opened from the inside, as fire code requires; in a seismic shift for Texas education that could have ramifications for decades, the state House signed off on a plan early Thursday to allow parents to use state dollars to pay for their children's private school education; and the writing has been on the wall. As the Dallas Mavericks move forward with their plans to build a basketball-only arena, their 32-year partnership with the Dallas Stars, their roommates at American Airlines Center and Reunion Arena, appears to be nearing an end. The larger North Texas school districts say classes will be held Wednesday, despite Dallas-Fort Worth being under an extreme cold warning. With the arrival of an Arctic blast, the region could see the coldest air of the season this morning. It expects wind chills in the area to dip into single digits in the metroplex. Other big local school districts, including Arlington, Fort Worth, Frisco and Richardson, announced that they will also remain open Wednesday. Though some also said students can arrive early to ensure safety. Dallas ISD and Richardson ISD have cancelled all athletics outdoor activities and events through Thursday due to the inclement weather. In other news, Neiman Marcus is closing its downtown store after more than 100 years in the core of the city. The storied site on Main Street will shutter effective March 31; Interim Dallas police Chief Michael Igo on Tuesday fired a Dallas police officer who'd been arrested on an aggravated sexual assault of a child charge; And Mariano Martinez remembers the exact moment he had an idea that would revolutionize beverages not only in Dallas but around the world. Martinez, who opened his restaurant, Mariano's Mexican Cuisine, now Mariano's Hacienda, in 1971, told The Dallas Morning News that a customer had complained to him that they didn't like his margaritas, saying the first was fine, the second tasted different, and the third wasn't even cold. Find out how Martinez took that comment and changed the bar and restaurant scene for the better in today's edition of the Dallas Morning News. Learn more about your ad choices. Claire de Mézerville López welcomes Eneida Padró, Ph.D., and Kate Shapero to the Restorative Works! Podcast.  Claire is joined by co-host, IIRP Instructor and Implementation Coach Nikki Chamblee, Ph.D. In this series of episodes, we explore what it means to “walk through tensions” - how we exist, find, and build community and forge a path forward through times of extreme polarization. Together, they explore how issues of polarization—exacerbated by the pandemic, political climates, and fractured relationships—are manifesting in schools today. Join us as Dr. Padró shares insights from her work supporting principals across the U.S. She speaks to the fractured relationships and uncertainty in schools caused by polarizing topics, and how leaders can begin to create supportive, trusting environments to navigate these challenges. Dr. Padró emphasizes the importance of centering humanity and relationships, particularly in schools serving marginalized communities. Kate brings her expertise as a science educator and restorative practitioner to the conversation, highlighting the double-layered polarization seen in K-12 settings. She discusses the complexities educators face when families and students experience issues differently—some engage deeply, while others shield their children from polarizing topics. Kate urges educators to cultivate curiosity and deep listening in students, creating spaces where conflicting perspectives can be explored with respect. Together, they discuss how restorative practices can be integrated into everyday school life to support students and staff, enhance relational health, and address issues of equity and inclusion. Whether it's by holding intentional check-ins, facilitating circles, or building authentic connections, this episode provides valuable tools for educators and leaders striving to create compassionate, equitable learning environments. Dr. Padró is Vice President of Instructional Leadership Academies at Relay GSE, leading the team responsible for the vision, design, and execution of all ILA programming. This includes the National Principal Academy Fellowship, the National Principal Supervisor Academy, the Inclusive Schools Leadership Institute, the Leverage Institute, and the National Structured Leader Professional Development. In previous roles at Relay, she served as Associate Dean of Regional Support, providing on-the-ground coaching and delivering professional development to school and system level leaders. Dr. Padró has worked in education for over 19 years, primarily serving communities in Dallas, Fort Worth, while delivering professional development across the country and internationally. Prior to joining Relay, she was an executive director at Fort Worth ISD, supervising a group of pre –K-12 school principals in the development of equity, literacy, instruction, culture, and leadership systems. Dr.  Padró has also served as a leadership development coach and program manager in the nonprofit sector. She engaged in turnaround work as a former school principal in Dallas ISD with student progress ranking in the top 5.6% in the district and the state. Kate is a science education and restorative practices specialist. After earning a BS in bioscience and biotechnology from Drexel University, she developed and taught science curriculum in the Philadelphia area, primarily in independent and alternative schools. Working with pre-K through post-graduate learners, she specializes in progressive curriculum design that is experiential, meaningful, and joyful. Teaching in a consensus-based K-8 school early in her career encouraged a deep curiosity about the science of relationships, especially how to humanely navigate conflicts and nurture trusting relationships among students and staff. This interest led to a master's degree in restorative practices education from IIRP in 2010 and continues today. As a restorative practitioner she collaborates with students, teaching teams, classroom communities, parent groups, and administrative staff to improve communication and relational health.  After almost 20 years in the classroom, Kate's current work includes facilitation, coaching, and professional development through independent consulting and roles with the IIRP, the Penn Literacy Network, and Unbound Ed. She regards positive relationships as a core value and aims to bring radical and needed transformation to our schools and communities. Tune in to learn how we can embrace our common humanity and work together to overcome polarization in our schools.

In this engaging episode of "Shark Theory," host Baylor Barbee takes us through valuable lessons from his experience as an honorary principal at a Dallas ISD school. Baylor emphasizes the significance of education and the dedication of educators, reminding us of the impact consistency, setting the right tone, and active listening can have on our lives and those around us. This insightful discussion extends beyond education, touching on universal themes of personal growth and leadership. Baylor Barbee shares his observations at Holland Elementary, highlighting the consistent and positive efforts of the school's leadership team in engaging students. He unpacks powerful concepts like the importance of consistency in life and how setting the right tone can influence our daily experiences. Baylor challenges listeners to reflect on their habits, questioning if they are consistently pursuing growth or settling into complacency. With a focus on the school's routine of greeting students, Baylor demonstrates how initial interactions set the day's tone, urging listeners to start their own days with intention and positivity. These insights are peppered with examples from his time as a principal for a day, where simple acts of kindness translate into profound impacts on the students. Key Takeaways: Consistency Matters: Emphasize the importance of being consistent in pursuing goals rather than being consistently complacent. Set the Right Tone: The way you begin your day or any activity can influence the entire experience. Value of Interaction: Simple gestures like a high five or showing genuine interest can significantly affect others, especially children. Power of Listening: Actively listening can create meaningful connections and is a rewarding practice in personal and professional contexts. Ask Questions: Engaging with curiosity and asking insightful questions is a powerful method for learning and fostering change. Notable Quotes: "Consistency is the most important piece of anything you do." "The energy you bring into a room sets the tone." "Just showing interest in somebody really does go a long way." "If you care about something, ask questions—it's the fastest way to learn and make a change." "You can create you a micro routine to put yourself in the best position to be productive for the day." What you just heard were public comments from three community members of Houston Independent School District, the largest school district in Texas, at the center of a controversial state takeover by the Texas Education Agency. The bell you hear in the audio is a hard cut-off for speakers, whose mics were immediately turned off. After working its way through the legal system for several years, last winter, the Texas Supreme Court greenlit the replacement of district superintendent and the locally elected board of trustees by the head of the TEA, appointed directly by the governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, himself. And last month, school was back in session under the newly appointed superintendent, Mike Miles - former US State Department ambassador, charter school CEO, and Dallas ISD superintendent - amid dozens of pedagogical and policy changes that left teachers, parents, and students confused, frustrated, and afraid, as heard in the public comment at the beginning of this episode. The takeover of Houston ISD sits at the intersection of so many issues impacting American education today - democratic backsliding and the rise of authoritarianism, the so-called parents' rights movement, testing & accountability measures, poverty, race, and charter schools. On Friday, September 15th, the morning after another heated board meeting in Houston, I spoke with Karina Quesada-Leon, an Houston ISD parent, activist, and former teacher who has been intensely involved in HISD for a decade, and she was generous to speak with me for an hour about the recent history of the majority Hispanic/Latino district, the impact of the takeover on teachers, families, & students, and how they are experiencing the New Educational System of Superintendent Mike Miles, and what's next for the movement opposed to these reactionary changes. We are generally not a current-events podcast, but because this is a fast-moving story, we wanted to release it to listeners as soon and as lightly edited as possible. You can also find an overview of the story on our YouTube channel by searching Human Restoration Project. We hope to follow up with Karina and other affected teachers, parents, and students at Houston ISD. UPDATE: Hopefully you've listened to part 1 of this discussion with our friend, Caitlin Fechner.  We'd highly recommend you listen to part 1 before diving in with us for part 2.     We surveyed parents a few months ago about where they stood with regards to allowing (or not allowing) sleepovers for their kids.  The reviews were heavy on the “no way” or “family only” but there were quite a few parents landing on “yes, they're fun and such a great childhood memory!” And they are and were!    In the internet age, information is coming at us at lightning speed.  So, we know more.  In real time.  What do we do with that knowledge? Should it affect our parenting?   Our friend, Caitlin Fechner, joins us for this 2-part series.  Caitlin has a BA in Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin and a MS in counseling from SMU.  She is a Licensed Professional Counselor, currently employed as a therapist with Dallas ISD.  She's married to Michael, and they have two sons, Trey and Milo.  We had so much to talk about that we decided to devote 2 episodes to this topic.  This discussion is hard and real.  Sleepovers in the 1970s consisted mostly of junk food, music, and a game or two of “straight as a board, light as a feather!” (iykyk) ☺    Sleepovers in the 2020s can look a lot different.  As always, you're the parent and will make decisions for your family that reflect your family values and parenting style.  We're all doing the best we can most days, and that's the truth.  Hopefully this episode will give you something to think about and consider as you make decisions for your family.     As always, thanks for listening!
