Dr. Ben Weitz discusses SIBO and Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Dr. Ben Weitz. [If you enjoy this podcast, please give us a rating and review on Apple Podcasts, so more people will find The Rational Wellness Podcast. Also check out the video version on my WeitzChiro YouTube page.] Podcast Highlights 0:32 I'm going to make some comments, pose some questions, and discuss some recent podcasts that we've done on SIBO and IBS. We had a discussion with Drs. Rahbar and Gurevich on SIBO and IBS: Discussion on SIBO and IBS with Dr. Sam Rahbar and Dr. Ilana Gurevich: Rational Wellness Podcast 298. We also had a presentation by Dr. Mark Pimentel on the latest research that his group has recently published on SIBO and IBS: SIBO: New Research Findings with Dr. Mark Pimentel: Rational Wellness Podcast 311. I also recommend that you listen to the interview that Shivan Sarna and Dr. Allison Siebecker conducted with Dr. Ali Rezaie of Dr. Pimentel's group: Digestive Disease Week 2023 Research Update by Dr. Ali Rezaie (June 2023) 3:42 Irritable bowel syndrome or IBS is the most common gastrointestinal disorder occurring in up to 20% of the US population. It is a functional digestive disorder marked by the following symptoms: gas and bloating, stomach pain, diarrhea, constipation, or alternating diarrhea and constipation. IBS is considered a functional disorder because if you do a scope or do a CAT scan, you won't see any structural problems in the intestines. By contrast, if you have Crohn's or ulcerative colitis and you do a scope or a scan, you'll likely see damage to the lining of the intestines, possibly bleeding, and erosions. Because it's a functional disorder, IBS was often considered to be a stress-induced disorder. Dr. Pimentel has now proven that approximately 60% of cases of IBS are caused by Small Intestinal Bacteria Overgrowth or SIBO. 5:35 The large intestine, aka, the colon, is a large and very elastic tube and it contains the trillions of bacteria, archea, and fungi that compose our microbiome. When these bacteria in the colon ferment and produce gas, this is not a problem. But the small intestine is a smaller tube and doesn't stretch as much and doesn't contain anywhere as much bacteria as the large intestine. The small intestine is where most nutrients are absorbed from our food, so there need to be a smaller amount of bacteria lining its mucosa or this would interfere with this. If you consume fermentable fiber and there is an overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine, this can lead to gas and bloating, which can cause pain and a change in bowel habits. Hydrogen sulfide and hydrogen gas are usually associated with diarrhea, while methane gas is usually associated with constipation. Dr. Ben Weitz is available for Functional Nutrition consultations specializing in Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders like IBS/SIBO and Reflux and also Cardiometabolic Risk Factors like elevated lipids, high blood sugar, and high blood pressure. Dr. Weitz has also successfully helped many patients with managing their weight and improving their athletic performance, as well as sports chiropractic work by calling his Santa Monica office 310-395-3111. Dr. Weitz is also available for video or phone consultations. Podcast Transcript Dr. Weitz: Hey, this is Dr. Ben Weitz, host of the Rational Wellness Podcast. Generative AI is the latest shiny toy in the workplace technology toolbox. The difference in this case is the bar to use it is very low. Anyone with an internet connection and a computer can access it. In this episode of Get Reworked, employment attorney Peter Rahbar discusses the potential risks of generative AI to the workplace and why organizations need to create guardrails around employee use. Listen: Get Reworked Full Episode List "I think it's very important in this moment, where we have a potential transformative technology, for the company to really take the lead on how it's introduced and used in the workplace. So I think an effective policy would not only describe what platforms and technologies are being governed here, but what type of information should and shouldn't be used with these platforms," said Peter. Highlights of the conversation include: The risks — and rewards — generative AI creates for employers and employees alike. How generative AI adds to existing employee fears of being replaced. Why companies should create policies on generative AI use now, not later. Why we need a debate on the use of AI in HR. On where we are and where we need to be with AI regulation. Plus, host Siobhan Fagan talks with Peter about the importance of transparency around AI use in the workplace, the different effects of internal vs. external use, and whether or not he is indeed Peter Rahbar. Listen in for more.
In episode 56 of Barclay Damon Live: Labor & Employment Podcast, host Ari Kwiatkowski talks with Peter Rahbar of the Rahbar Group. He's an attorney with broad experience in workplace issues, which he brings to the conversation. Starting off with a definition of the phenomenon, Peter asserts that it's not new, though the phrase “quiet quitting” may be. Essentially, it refers to employees doing the bare minimum to get by in their jobs—without actually quitting. To combat it, he suggests clients (and listeners) communicate early and often to avoid many circumstances that can lead to quiet quitting. Listen in for more on this timely topic.

Peter Rahbar is a workplace legal expert and founder of the Rahbar Group. In response to the phrase Responsible Leadership, he states that leaders must understand that it is their responsibility to take care of those who choose to follow them. This can manifest in many different forms, such as listening to ideas, understanding their needs, and providing them with support. He goes on to explain that he has worked with many leaders over his career and that he has developed strong relationships with them. All of these relationships have solidified his understanding of responsible leadership and the importance of taking care of those who follow. Ultimately, Peter believes that responsible leadership is a responsibility that must be taken seriously. Responsible leadership requires building trust with those around you, whether they are employees, clients or customers. To be a responsible leader, you need to have qualities such as vision, integrity, courage, humility, compassion, and flexibility. Vision involves being able to articulate your ideas to those who work for you. Integrity involves making difficult decisions and having difficult conversations. Courage involves going into difficult situations. Humility involves understanding that you don't know everything, and building a team to help you understand those things. Compassion involves showing empathy and understanding for those who rely on you. Finally, flexibility is needed as world conditions can change without warning and you need to be prepared to modify your plans accordingly. The conversation between the two speakers centered around employment and workplace law and how to build trust and understanding with clients. Peter, a lawyer, has been practicing for over 20 years and was inspired to pursue a career in law after watching television shows as a child. He originally planned to become a sports lawyer and was accepted to Proskauer Law Firm, where he learned the importance of labor and employment law. After 12 years of leading Hearst's global employment strategy, he decided to switch sides and start his own firm, where he now focuses on working with executives and individuals. We need some of our OTs with the biggest hearts and brightest minds to consider specializing in burn therapy. But, no matter what setting you work in, you will likely have someone with a burn patient on your caseload at some point. Burns are the 4th most common type of trauma worldwide (behind traffic accidents, falls, and interpersonal violence.) 90% of burns occur in low- to middle-income countries. While OTs have worked in burn units for decades, the research behind OT-specific contributions to burn care is still in its infancy. We'll see this at the beginning of the podcast as we look at some early-stage research from Iran on occupational therapy for hand burns. Then, we'll be joined by burn-rehab clinical specialist, Jody Sabel, OT/L. Jody will share about her work in acute and outpatient burn care. And, she will speak with us about the challenges and opportunities is in this incredibly important practice area.In order to earn credit for this course, you must take the test within the OT Potential Club. You can find more details on this course here:https://otpotential.com/ceu-podcast-courses/occupational-therapy-for-hand-burnsHere's the primary research we are discussing:Aghajanzade, M., Momeni, M., Niazi, M., Ghorbani, H., Saberi, M., Kheirkhah, R., Rahbar, H., & Karimi, H. Cement is to the construction industry like dirt is to a garden. It's essential for all kinds of buildings and infrastructure. But it's also a huge greenhouse gas contributor. With the current push toward more climate-friendly technologies, two researchers from Massachusetts claim they have created a cement-like material that is not just carbon neutral, but literally sucks carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere.Hi, I'm Kathy Fettke and this is Real Estate News for Investors. If you like our podcast, please subscribe and leave us a review. So what is this intriguing new material? It's called Enzymatic Construction Material or ECM. It was created at the Massachusetts-based Worcester Polytechnic Institute by researchers Suzanne Scarlata and Nima Rahbar.Carbon-Negative FoodprintIn addition to its eco-friendly carbon-negative footprint, they say it will also use stored carbon to heal cracks. And it may also be a good material to patch aging concrete. As reported by Construction Dive, the primary component of ECM is calcium carbonate crystals. You get that by combining carbonic anhydrase with CO2, which is an enzyme found in living cells. The mixture also includes sand, water, and a polymer binding agent. The final product isn't as strong as concrete, but Scarlata and Rahbar say it could be used for smaller projects with a lower load demand. That might be the side of a house, for example. What's a Megapascal?ECM's strength is currently 12 MPa, or Megapascals, which is a unit of measure for the compressive strength of concrete. The higher the number, the more pressure can be applied to the concrete before it starts to break down. Typical Portland Concrete ranges from 20 to 40 MPa but some concrete is rated much higher for projects that require high strength and durability.Scarlata told Construction Dive: “The technology's there, but needs tweaking and a little more development.” They have patented their product and founded a start-up called Enzymatic Inc. to develop it. In addition to making it stronger, they also reportedly want to make it more resistant to humidity and water damage. They plan on conducting more tests, and will be filing for grants to help fund their research. ECM currently costs about $168 per cubic yard to produce although Rahbar says the benefits it provides for the environment are much greater than concrete. Concrete is cheaper, dollar-wise, at $125 per cubic yard.Other Eco-Friendly Concrete AlternativesBut this isn't the only eco-friendly product being developed to replace concrete some day in the future. According to media website, Anthropocene, which focuses on sustainability science and innovation, there are other products in development that are also carbon-negative.One is called hempcrete, which is made of hemp fibers and a binding agent. Another is a material that's infused with bacteria that absorbs carbon dioxide. The ECM product has an enzyme that does that.ECM vs. ConcreteAnthropocene says that twenty-seven cubic feet of ECM will store 8 kilograms of carbon dioxide while the same amount of concrete will “emit” more than 180 kilograms of carbon dioxide. In addition to being carbon negative, ECM can use the carbon it stores to heal cracks. It can also be produced without high temperatures and doesn't take a long time to cure, like concrete. It'll take a huge effort to displace concrete, however. Concrete pretty much rules the construction world right now, with some 30 billion metric tons used per year. It also accounts for about 7% of the greenhouse gases produced worldwide.Rahbar says their goal is to produce a building material with a lower carbon footprint. He says: “It's our contribution to climate change issues.”If you'd like to read more on this topic, you'll find links in the show notes at newsforinvestors.com.Also, please remember to hit the subscribe button, and leave a review! You can also join our real estate investor network for free at newsforinvestors.com. In this podcast episode, MRS Bulletin's Sophia Chen interviews Nima Rahbar of Worcester Polytechnic Institute on the use of an enzyme, carbonic anhydrase, that initiates self-healing in concrete. The enzyme catalyzes calcium in the cement to react with carbon dioxide from the air to form crystals of calcite, which repairs cracks. Rahbar's research group has demonstrated how the material can heal millimeter-wide cracks. Ubiquitous concrete is responsible for 8% of human-made greenhouse gases, including that used in the repair of existing structures. Rahbar's work is expected to help reduce concrete's carbon footprint, while also speeding up the self-healing compared to the previously used bacteria-based methods.
