Ep5 - Homelessness Reduction Act And Brexit by Papa Baiden
[Recorded Nov 15th, 2017. Edited and produced by Jie Zheng.] Just another day in the life of a homelessness activist. Saw another person I couldn't walk past, and thought it was worth sharing the experience. [Recorded Nov 10th, 2017. Edited and produced by Jie Zheng.] Interviewing Andy Slaughter (Tw: @hammersmithandy) In depth discussion on housing policy, Homelessness reduction act, and the state of private rented sector. We begin by important coverage of the Grenfell Tower tragedy, and look into the duty of care government carries for housing victims, applying this duty wider, also touching on the lack of legal protection for tenants. Also features a nice shout out to the work of charities Shelter, Crisis, and St Mungo’s. This 4 page note explains in great detail the new duties in law. But looooong story short, there’s a huge increase in legal responsibility for local governments with no increase in funds to meet this (some areas have had epic decrease of funds). http://www.cih.org/resources/PDF/Policy%20free%20download%20pdfs/What%20you%20need%20to%20know%20Homelessness%20Reduction%20Act%202017.pdf
[Recorded Nov 2nd, 2017. Edited and produced by Jie Zheng.] Interviewing Tom Copley (Tw: @tomcopley) An interesting look at the issue of homelessness from the perspective of somebody inside the Greater London Authority. Change is often spoken of as something people want ‘outside the system’. It’s great to hear from someone elected into office talk through some of the challenges of the housing system, what he’s trying to do to make it better. Agency fee ban (A new draft bill will be introduced to Parliament today (1 November 2017) to ban letting fees.): https://www.gov.uk/government/news/government-action-to-end-letting-agent-fees 3. Home Office use of CHAIN homelessness data (The Home Office secretly acquired sensitive data, showing the nationality of people sleeping rough on the streets, in order to remove them from Britain) : https://amp.theguardian.com/uk-news/2017/aug/19/home-office-secret-emails-data-homeless-eu-nationals 4. My Freedom of Information request on Bedroom Tax, and findings: bit.ly/2BOY2d8 5. Open letter to Boris Johnson from Head of UK Statistics Authority regarding the £350million per week figure used in the EU referendum (great to see misleading data claims be challenged by independent authorities. Need this for homelessness too): https://www.statisticsauthority.gov.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/Letter-from-Sir-David-Norgrove-to-Foreign-Secretary.pdf
Begining the journey for you, the same way it all started for me: talking to someone huddled up on the street. This episode is a brief exploration of some of the issues that the gentleman I came across had to deal with, and I then put it into context of my wider research on homelessness that I underwent to produce my book. The product is raw, first person experience of the dangers and pitfalls of homelessness, and a reminder of why we need to solve this issue.
