In this episode, listen to a remastered version of William Greathouse's sermon “The Cross and My Freedom.” This is the fourth sermon of a series on the cross preached during Holy Week in 1976 at Shawnee Church of the Nazarene. Greathouse was a pastor, teacher, and leader of the Church of the Nazarene. He served as a pastor from 1938 to 1963 and then was elected president of Trevecca Nazarene College. My Bondage and My Freedom

Do you ever feel like you're not enough? Have you thought, “if only I could get this Christianity thing right? I always seem to fall short.” It's Easter week; are you excited about it or prepped to feel like a miserable sinner? Today is for you if... If you desire to grow closer to God. If you're tired of doing life in your own strength. If you're ready to enjoy freedom in Christ like He meant for you to live. I've got the Waffle House voice going on today. My kids were worried about me. “It's okay, just allergies,” I told them. This isn't my real voice. It's just temporarily altered my voice. It'll go back to my original soon, but it made me think we can look at what we do and feel; that's who I am, my identity.  We can think, I'm not good enough, don't read my Bible enough, don't pray enough, or I always make the same mistakes and then feel guilty. But Father says something different about our identity. It's Easter week and how many times will you hear, “For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.” Or worse, some will listen to, “You're just a sinner in the hands of an angry God.”  Many believe we're broken sinners, and that's what we'll always be. Yes, they believe in Jesus and that He died on the cross, but they've somehow got to live up to a certain standard to be righteous all the time. There's more to be done and keep doing to keep the sinful nature at bay. It's not about what we do but what Jesus did.  “Jesus + nothing = My Freedom.”  This is the gospel! My righteousness is based on Jesus and Jesus alone!! This is the “good news”!! Romans 10:4 NRSVA “Christ is the end of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes” Galatians 3:1-3 NASB You foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified? 2 This is the only thing I want to find out from you: did you receive the Spirit by works of the Law, or by hearing with faith? 3 Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? Paul clarifies the believer's relationship to the law: “The law was put in charge to lead us to Christ that we might be justified by faith. Now that faith has come, we are no longer under the supervision of the law.” — Galatians 3:24–25 Galatians 3:26–27 Mirror Study Bible 26 What Jesus Christ believes to be true about you is the final confirmation of mankind's redeemed sonship. His faith is the only valid reference to your belief!  27 Whoever is immersed in Christ is fully clothed with him! He is your brand new wardrobe confirming your sonship! Question 1: How were you saved? * by observing the spiritual to-do list? * by believing what Jesus did for you? Paul is urging Christians to continue like we began our relationship with Father by faith. We started by believing and by opening ourselves up to the Spirit's work in us. Salvation had nothing to do with the law. Likewise, we achieve growth in Christ through our human effort either. Colossians 2:6 NASB Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, You received Jesus by faith, so walk in Him by this same faith. Growth comes from abiding in the Vine (John 15), not by human effort. The Spirit produces fruit in us. Question 2: How can you rest in Jesus and what He did for you on the cross today? This conversation is with Nick Bromell, Professor Emeritus in the English Department at University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Mass. Bromell is the author of numerous articles on 19th and 20th century literature and politics, and has edited the Norton Critical Edition of Frederick Douglass' My Bondage and My Freedom, as well as a collection of essays under the title The Political Companion to W.E.B. Du Bois (University of Kentucky Press, 2018). He is the author of four books: By the Sweat of the Brow: Literature and Labor in Antebellum America (University of Chicago, 1993), Tomorrow Never Knows: Rock and Psychedelics in the 1960s (University of Chicago Press, 2000), The Time is Always Now: Black Thought and the Transformation of U.S. Democracy (Oxford University Press, 2013), and a new book, the occasion for our conversation today, The Powers of Dignity: The Black Political Philosophy of Frederick Douglass, out with Duke University Press in 2021.In The Powers of Dignity, Bromell centers on the notion of dignity and its cognates in Douglass' work and, by way of that focus, develops a broad, comprehensive picture of a political philosophy rooted in what Douglass calls “the slave experience.” In our discussion here , we explore themes of race, racism, Republicanism, liberalism, and the complexities of imagining Black liberation in the 19th century up through the 21st century.

My friend is forever shouting about his Freedom. It is the only song he sings. Freedom is a good thing, but our love of freedom is why family sizes are shrinking. Children are a responsibility. Freedom and Responsibility are paired opposites, a duality. The more you have of one, the less you have of the other.I had written only those few words when I received a request from the American Small Business Institute to answer a question from Glenn in Calgary; he wanted me to predict the Top Five Qualities of an Advertising Consultant in 2023. I had the Freedom to answer however I wanted. I could be flip, funny, cute, self-serving, dismissive, scholarly, insulting, pedantic, or predictable. My Freedom was unrestrained. But I also had the Responsibility to give Glenn a list of five specific, attainable goals that would make him and his clients more successful. I told Glenn the Top Five Qualities for 2023 would be these: Ability to write good ads. I've never seen a business fail due to “reaching the wrong people.” Businesses fail because they say the wrong thing. Knowledge of how to differentiate a business from its category. You must make your client's business distinctive and memorable. Honesty. You must be willing to accept responsibility for the failure of your ad campaign. Courage to say what needs to be said to the business owner. This is how you avoid campaigns that fail. Wisdom to know that good advertising will not fix a broken business. Choose your clients carefully, Glenn. Depression and Joy are another duality. The more you have of one, the less you have of the other.Pride – the inability to feel grateful – is what keeps us from feeling joy. The disembodied voice that tells us we need to be “proud, self-made men and women,” is the devil who robs us of our joy. Depression is unfocused anger. Joy is unfocused gratitude. The more you have of one, the less you have of the other. If you look for reasons to be angry, you will find them. If you look for reasons to be grateful, you will find them. Don't be angry. Be grateful. Justice and Mercy are a third duality. And the tug-of-war between them is intense.The only hard choices in life are the choices between two good things. Justice and Mercy are both good things. When you encounter the tug-of-war between them, which one do you favor? Opportunity and Security, a fourth duality.When Opportunity increases, Security declines. This sounds like Risk and Reward, but it's not. If Risk and Reward were a duality, increasing your risk would decrease your reward. But increased risk of failure increases potential reward. This makes Risk and Reward a synchronous potentiality contained entirely within the realm of Opportunity. Ultimately, it all comes down to Choices.Our plan is always to make good choices, not bad choices. But most choices are neither good nor bad in the moment we make them. They become good or bad in hindsight. They become good or bad due to consequences. The outcome is never entirely clear until after the show is over. We learn more from our failures than we learn from our successes. Good decisions come from experience. Experience comes from bad decisions. You cannot judge a person's experience by their age. You can judge it only by what they have experienced. A person can have 30 years of experience, or they can 1 year of experience 30 times. Which will you have? Will you choose to embrace risk and take your beatings when you fail and learn hard lessons and win great victories? Opportunity is a good thing. But then again, so is Security.   Frederick Douglas was the “prose poet of America's (and perhaps a universal) body politic. He searched for the human soul, envisioned through slavery and freedom in all their meanings. There had been no other voice quite like Douglass's.” Join me and Professor David Blight as we discuss his Pulitzer Prize winning biography, Frederick Douglass, Prophet of Freedom. The lessons Douglass taught about freedom, dignity, and justice nearly 150 years ago are as important and relevant today as they were then. Guest David W. Blight, Sterling Professor of American History at Yale University David W. Blight  is a teacher, scholar and public historian. At Yale University he is Sterling Professor of History, joining that faculty in January, 2003. As of June, 2004, he is Director, succeeding David Brion Davis, of the Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery, Resistance, and Abolition. In his capacity as director of the Gilder Lehrman Center at Yale, Blight organizes conferences, working groups, lectures, the administering of the annual Frederick Douglass Book Prize, and many public outreach programs regarding the history of slavery and its abolition. He previously taught at Amherst College for thirteen years. In 2013-14 he was the William Pitt Professor of American History at Cambridge University, UK, and in 2010-11, Blight was the Rogers Distinguished Fellow in 19th-Century American History at the Huntington Library, San Marino, CA. During the 2006-07 academic year he was a fellow at the Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Writers and Scholars, New York Public Library. In October of 2018, Simon and Schuster published his new biography of Frederick Douglass, entitled, Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom, which garnered nine book awards, including the Pulitzer Prize, the Francis Parkman Prize, the Bancroft Prize, and the Gilder Lehrman Lincoln Prize. The Douglass book has been optioned by Higher Ground Productions and Netflix for a projected feature film. Blight works in many capacities in the world of public history, including on boards of museums and historical societies, and as a member of a small team of advisors to the 9/11 Memorial and Museum team of curators. For that institution he wrote the recently published essay, “Will It Rise: September 11 in American Memory.”  In 2012, Blight was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and delivered an induction address, “The Pleasure and Pain of History.” In 2018, Blight was appointed by the Georgia Historical Society as a Vincent J. Dooley Distinguished Teaching Fellow, which recognizes national leaders in the field of history as both writers and educators whose research has enhanced or changed the way the public understands the past. Blight's newest books include annotated editions, with introductory essay, of Frederick Douglass's second autobiography, My Bondage and My Freedom (Yale Univ. Press, 2013), Robert Penn Warren's Who Speaks for the Negro, (Yale Univ. Press, 2014), and the monograph, American Oracle: The Civil War in the Civil Rights Era (Harvard University Press, published August 2011), which received the 2012 Anisfield-Wolf Award for best book in non-fiction on racism and human diversity. American Oracle is an intellectual history of Civil War memory, rooted in the work of Robert Penn Warren, Bruce Catton, Edmund Wilson, and James Baldwin.  Blight is also the author of A Slave No More: Two Men Who Escaped to Freedom, Including their Narratives of Emancipation, (Harcourt, 2007, paperback in 2009).  This book combines two newly discovered slave narratives in a volume that recovers the lives of their authors, John Washington and Wallace Turnage, as well as provides an incisive history of the story of emancipation.  In June, 2004, the New York Times ran a front page story about the discovery and significance of these two rare slave narratives.  A Slave No More garnered three book prizes, including the Connecticut Book Award for non-fictio...

Author and speaker, Donna Thomson, takes us on the journey of a caregiver.   In Episode #050, I had the pleasure of interviewing Donna Thomson and we dove into the topic of caregiving. Donna is an author and speaker on issues relating to family caregiving, disability and aging. She is a patient and family advisor on health research and policy. Donna teaches family caregivers how to advocate for care in hospital and in the community.     If you find this read interesting you can listen to the conversation in its entirety by clicking play on the player below or searching ‘Empowering Ability’ on your podcast player, such as, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Play.   Before my interview with Donna I took the opportunity to read Donna’s first book, ‘The 4 Walls of my Freedom’, which really helped me to gain perspective on what it is be like to be a mother with a child that has medical needs. It gave me perspective on what it must have been like for my own mother, when faced with the medical challenges my sister experienced at a young age. Quoting Donna from her book, “Mothering a child with medical needs is a very public, but lonely endeavor.”     On the podcast I ask Donna, “Can you share your experience so that others listening can also understand your perspective? And, so other mothers maybe don’t feel so alone?     Paraphrasing from the podcast Donna shares, “My son, [Nicholas], has CP [cerebral palsy] and a complex disability. At 4 months [old] he was diagnosed, and it was like he became the property of health care and social care systems. We began to be assessed and I felt as though I was under a microscope. [I was] Grateful for the assistance because you feel like it is the key to the future success of your child, and you want to present as a competent parent. Then you learn when you present as a competent parent that’s reason for people to abandon you. If you seem to be doing well then people aren’t going to help you. In order to access the help you need at home you have to demonstrate failure as a parent. What do these assessments and scores about my baby say about me? Am I a success or failure as a parent? All of this brought the bond between my son and I closer and we would have very intimate moments when alone at home.”   I ask, “Do you feel that this pushed you into being a victim?”   In summary Donna replied, “Not exactly. We had to demonstrate to the system what our needs where, and to do that they had to show them that they were struggling.”     Finding Pleasure in Peeling the Potatoes:   In a previous conversation with Donna it came up that she had to find pleasure in peeling the potatoes and this connects directly to her book title ‘The Four Walls of My Freedom.’ On the podcast, I ask Donna, “Why do we need to find pleasure in peeling the potatoes? And, how do we do that?”   Paraphrasing from the podcast Donna shares, “I can’t leave my house, so how can I make a rich life of this? Watching the lady peeling the avocados next door through the window, [I admired] the way she was able to peel the avocado without breaking the skin was beautiful. I started thinking I can do that. Then I started thinking about how well I am peeling vegetables. It was sensual, secondly, I was feeding my children. I linked what I was doing with the purpose of what I was doing.     I started thinking about the tiniest things that I was doing as forms of meditation, and it made me happy. I wasn’t doing anything differently, I was simply looking at myself doing the jobs of feeding the kids, doing the laundry, and making the bed.   Locating the extraordinary in the ordinary. We have the benefit of the slow movement lived loud in our families. We do things more slowly, we are more contemplative, we do things more purposefully. There is opportunity in finding meaning and joy in the way we live.”     Everyone is a Caregiver.   Donna shares, “The word caregiver applies to everybody. At the end of the day we are talking about dependency needs met by someone else. A pet, a friend, we all look after each other even when we are perfectly healthy in the prime of our lives. You are not feeling good I will bring you over some soup. We don’t have anything in our society to say that caring for someone is okay. The pendulum has swung so far away from providing care [being accepted in our society].   In my first conversation with Donna, she helped me to realize that I am a caregiver. When I was honest with myself it was the truth, and it felt weird. My ego didn’t want to accept this language because of the societal stigmas that are attached to caregiving. At first, it made me feel weak. Upon reflection, and acceptance that I am a caregiver there is a strength that comes with being a caregiver. Caregiving is one of the most connected and real human experiences that we can have, it has been wired into our biology as we have evolved as an advanced species. As Donna shares, “Everyone is a caregiver.”    So I ask you, how are you a caregiver? I invite you to celebrate that you are a caregiver, and not to fight it or deny it. What are the benefits that caregiving brings into your life?     Donna's Life as an Activist:   Paraphrasing from the podcast Donna Shares, “My idea was do to a post mortem on our family experience and the support that we received, or did not receive, and to determine what was helpful and what was not helpful. I thought this would be useful for other families and policy makers. I became involved in inclusion. I became active in the family movement, and I became involved with the Ottawa affiliate for PLAN, which is all about citizenship.   I became aware of and met Indian economist, Amartya Sen, who developed ‘The Capability Approach’. The Capability Approach looks at how people can be supported by the community and the State so that they can have a life that they value. It is about individual choice and being supported to have a life that you value within circumstances of adversity. Sen was looking at extreme poverty in India, but I used this approach to look at my family.”     Donna used this approach in her book 'The 4 Walls of my Freedom’  looking at how people can make personal choices, express their personal values, and live in the community to do this. Donna and I further discuss inclusion, and I recommend you listen to this episode to hear these perspectives.     Donna's New Book:   I’m co-writing a new book with Dr Zackery White, a professor at Queens University in Charlotte North Carolina.   Donna shares, “Dr. Zackery White is writing about Caregiver identity and how it is so difficult to express the transformations that happen when giving high levels of care to someone. Lots of things grow and lots of things die when you become immersed in giving care to someone. Giving people language to create the narrative to understand your life in the now.   My part of the book is the what’s next. What can you do to be an advocate and take action; personal support networks, what are the assets in your community [asset based community development], and online tools including support groups. These are actions you can take to thrive in situations of adversity. It will be titled something like ‘Transformations in Caregiving’ ”.       I thank Donna for coming on the podcast and sharing her deeply personal experiences, and her insights on caregiving. This week we celebrate July 4th as a Nation. Independence Day. We celebrate the Freedom we have because many men and women have sacrificed SO much to secure it for us. We are a blessed nation in this regard. But there is an even greater Freedom than this. The Freedom we have as Believers in Jesus. This Freedom is forever and can never be taken away. Donna Thomson, author of the best-selling book, The Four Walls of My Freedom will be interviewed by Dave, The Caregiver's Caregiver, Wednesday, June 17, at noon PDT.  Her book portrays the account of raising a son with cerebral palsy and her passionate appeal to change the way we think about "the good life." Donna Thomson’s life was forever changed by her son Nicholas. Donna gave up her career to become his primary caregiver and embarked on a second career as a disability activist, author, and consultant. She will discuss her experience in treading delicately through daily care, emergencies, and medical bureaucracy as Donna and her family cope with her son’s condition while maintaining value and dignity. She brilliantly demonstrates the vital contribution that people with disabilities make to our society and addresses the ethics and economics of giving and receiving care and will also discuss  ways that communities can help caregivers.

My Bondage and My Freedom is an autobiographical slave narrative written by Frederick Douglass and published in 1855. It is the second of three autobiographies written by Douglass, and is mainly an expansion of his first (Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass), discussing in greater detail his transition from bondage to liberty. Douglass, a former slave, following his liberation went on to become a prominent abolitionist, speaker, author, and publisher. In chapter one, Mr. Douglass recounts his early childhood experiences as a slave.
