Research from Imperial College London, and funded by the Greater London Authority, suggests ‘air pollution is damaging at all stages of life'. They found exposure to certain particles could lead to miscarriages, cause low sperm count and stunt children's lung growth. As well as cause chronic illnesses, cancer and strokes in adults. The findings come as Boris Johnson, publicly criticised the planned expansion of Ulez by the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, saying ‘it has nothing to do with air pollution'. Frank Kelly, professor of community health and policy at Imperial College London, explains the significance of the findings and why there should be “nothing political when it comes to air quality”. Contents: Background Plan Corresponding plans Operation London Bridge Operation London Bridge (also known by its code phrase "London Bridge is down") is the name of a funeral plan for Queen Elizabeth II. The plan includes the announcement of her death, the period of official mourning, and the details of her state funeral. The plan was created in the 1960s and revised many times in the years before her death in 2022. The phrase "London Bridge is down" would be used to communicate the death of the Queen to the prime minister of the United Kingdom and key personnel, setting the plan into motion. Bodies involved in preparing the plan included various government departments, the Church of England, Metropolitan Police Service, the British Armed Forces, the media, the Royal Parks, London boroughs, the Greater London Authority and Transport for London. Some critical decisions relating to the plan were made by the Queen herself, while some were left to be determined by her successor. Reporting on the preparations, The Guardian described them as "planned to the minute" with "arcane and highly specific" details. As well as Operation London Bridge, there is an additional plan called Operation Unicorn, which details what would happen if the Queen were to die in Scotland, as ultimately proved to be the case. Running concurrently with Operation London Bridge is Operation Spring Tide, which addresses the accession of King Charles III to the throne and his first trip to the countries of the UK. Several Commonwealth realms developed their own plans for how to react to the death of the Queen. Pooja Agrawal, architect and planner, is co-founder of the social enterprise Public Practice, and now serves as its CEO. Based in London, Public Practice creates placements for trained architects and planners in local government. Their goal is to build up the capacity of planning departments to respond to both the crisis of affordable housing, and to the shortage of skilled practitioners in the public sector. At the same time they are working to make that new generation of city planners young and diverse. Public Practice's initial cohort was 17 ‘associates,' then 37 the following year (from over 400 applicants). And those new associates joined 24 councils across London and south-east England. The UK Government will soon publish its highly-anticipated Levelling Up White Paper, setting out a plan to level up opportunities and to address the country's long-standing geographic inequalities. What have fellow UK think tank experts made of the levelling up debate so far? How do they feel the agenda's narrative has evolved over the past eighteen months? What do they expect to see in the forthcoming Levelling Up White Paper? In this episode of City Talks, Andrew Carter speaks to Will Tanner, Director of Onward and former special advisor to Theresa May, Carys Roberts, Executive Director of IPPR (Institute for Public Policy Research) and Nick Bowes, Chief Executive of Centre for London and former Mayoral Director of Policy at the Greater London Authority. In this Podcast we talk to Kathleen Kelley about her work in LocalMotion “to support local people to address social, environmental and economic priorities selected and driven locally and derive as much learning as possible from that process”. The circumstances facing communities and charities across the country are increasingly difficult. The long-term and continuing squeeze on funding to local government and for local services against a backdrop of long-established regional differences, has left charities – themselves resource constrained – increasingly having to pick up the pieces. Kathleen Kelley is now working with a number of independent funders who have been investing and supporting charities to survive and adapt for a number of years but they know that there is more they should do to support and boost the potential of people and communities, and crucially to do so through a place-based approach. Kathleen through her work is keen to understand how to be more effective collectively in supporting issues facing communities across the UK and how this might change practice Kathleen has led the development of the National Lottery Community Fund’s partnership funding approach, establishing strategic partnerships across the charitable, public, private and funder sectors. More recently she was Assistant Director of Communities and Social Policy at Greater London Authority implementing the Mayor’s strategies on Social Integration and Equalities, Diversity and Inclusion. Previously she worked at the Joseph Rowntree Foundation for 10 years --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/globalnet21/message

We then move to how she overcame her aversion to maths to embrace a role that involved quite a lot of numbers - and discuss how having a family increased her drive to advance through her career and pursue promotions. Finally, we look back to the family and other industry figures that inspired her and her approach to taking on new challenges and reach assignments. Hitting The High Notes is town planning's equivalent of Desert Island Discs. In these episodes Sam Stafford chats to preeminent figures in the planning and property sectors about the six planning permissions or projects that helped to shape them as professionals. And, so that we can get to know people a little better personally, for every permission or project Sam asks his guests for a piece of music that reminds them of that period of their career. Unlike Desert Island Discs you will not hear any of that music during the episode because using commercially-licensed music without the copyright holders permission or a very expensive PRS licensing agreement could land Sam in hot water, so, when you have finished listening to this episode, you will have to make do with YouTube videos and a Spotify playlist, links to which you will find below. Sam's guest for this episode of Hitting The High Notes is Victoria Hills, Chief Executive of the RTPI. Their conversation takes in Victoria's early work at Wycombe District Council, her move, via Steer Davies Gleave, to the Greater London Authority and from there her role at the Old Oak & Park Royal Development Corporation. Australia based, UK born and bred Bang the Table colleague Jodie House has NEVER listened to the UK Consult Podcast before, and with some flimsy excuses (at best) for not doing so, but can Jonno guess what sector she focuses on in her work, and what her favourite TV Show is, based on her name alone?
