This week, your hosts read Far Out: An Anthology of Recent Queer Science Fiction and Fantasy, edited by Paula Guran, aka an absolutely kickass collection of speculative short stories ranging from a cat-loving AI to gut-wrenching horror. Both Amelia and Sarah agree that this is one of the best anthologies they've encountered, with an effective theme and a wide selection of engaging and imaginative stories. Also, Amelia brushes the fringe of a deep musical conspiracy involving a "hellish" pop song played in H&M which was at the center of multiple murders and an apocalypse cult, probably, according to her lack of evidence and the general vibes. Sarah liked the beat. Stories discussed: Cat Pictures Please by Naomi KritzerThe Deepwater Bride by Tamsyn MuirI'm Alive, I Love You, I'll See You in Reno by Vylar KaftanDas Steingeschöpf by G. V. Guest host Kate Burton  presents four works with a hint of strangeness.  Your laptop wants the best for you, with a little reciprocity, in “Cat Pictures Please,” by Naomi Kritzer, performed by Nia Vardalos.  “There Will Come Soft Rains” is an eerie post-apocalypse classic by Ray Bradbury, performed by Kathleen Chalfant.  A despondent housewife gets a lift from a seductive window treatment in Michel Faber’s “The Eyes of the Soul,” performed by Sam Underwood.    Join and give!: https://donatenow.networkforgood.org/symphonyspacenyc?code=Splashpage See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Our apologies for the slightly late upload on this one! We blame internet connectivity issues, warped audio, and a cat who just. won't. leave. the. keyboard. alone. Come ye, come all, and welcome our fabulous guest Naomi Kritzer to the podcast! Kritzer is the author of the 2019 Nebula Award nominated young adult novel, CATFISHING ON CATNET, as well as the 2016 Nebula nominated and Hugo and Locus *winning* story CAT PICTURES PLEASE. We discuss everything from Kritzer's own cats to the parameters of artificial intelligence (catlike or otherwise) to the building blocks of personhood, and basically fall even more in love with this author's fantastic words. You can read CAT PICTURES PLEASE on the Clarkesworld website at http://clarkesworldmagazine.com/kritzer_01_15, and you can find out more about Naomi Kritzer's work at www.naomikritzer.com or by following her on social media under the handle @naomikritzer.
