Send us a textDespite all the rain, the Minnesota Twins and Cleveland Guardians managed to get a couple games in at Target Field this series, splitting the pair. And that seemed just fine, considering how battered the Twins' lineup is now. David and Dan discuss the impact weather had on this series while seriously questioning how Rocco Baldelli handled it, while they also saw the ending to Game 1 as the most Minnesota ending a baseball game could have. They assess how the team is holding together the lineup without Carlos Correa and Byron Buxton, and they look ahead to a big weekend of baseball in the AL Central. Andrew "Hoges" Hoganson fills in for Dan, and worries that filling in for Dan is what caused the winning streak to end. The boys talk through all of the latest injury news and the transactions processed by the team. David wants to know what the expectation should be for the upcoming American League Central series against the Guardians and the Royals knowing the roster will be a makeshift group. Hoges wants to know if Rocco managed differently to start the streak because he knew he was on the hot seat, while David just wonders if Rocco has also at times been confused about this winning streak. David loves Pablo Lopez showing off some swagger, and Hoges wants to know if the Twins are a legitimate playoff team. Hoges offers high praise for Rocco for managing to win these games, and David wants to see the Twins recall Randy Dobnak to fill in as a long reliever. David once again romanticizes a Kody Clemens homerun, while Hoges can't stop talking about Willi Castro's great catch in left. David is curious if this is what we can expect out of Chris Paddack moving forward, while Hoges wants to know how many AL Central teams will make the postseason. Guest In a career that spanned a quarter-century, Ted Czech covered crime for newspapers in three states. Disenchanted with how journalism was taught and practiced, Czech launched a second career in public relations in 2021 and began work on Saving the Beast: A Recovering Reporter Reflects on America's Broken Media and How to Fix It. Why This Episode Matters This episode explores the state of American journalism with Ted Czech, a former newspaper reporter and author of Saving the Beast. Czech critiques the decline of objective reporting, attributing it to sensationalism, ideological bias, and personality-driven news. He advocates for a return to balanced, fact-based journalism. Key takeaways: Journalism must separate fact from opinion to maintain credibility. Media polarization feeds public echo chambers. Restoring trust will require structural and cultural change. The Twins win the first and then lose the next three in close fashion, dropping farther under .500 -- which is all still part of David's grand vision for their return to a winning record by mid-summer. David's optimism, though, is limited after seeing the bats go cold and the pitchers prove unable to get the ball to first base in key moments. Dan is not so sure Ryan Jeffers has truly turned a corner, but he is quite sure that a healthy Willi Castro would make a difference right now, considering Rocco Baldelli's bench options. Send us a textFor the fourth time this season, the Minnesota Twins lost a series, this time at home to the first-place Detroit Tigers. But they did salvage at least a win, in Game 3, showing that even a fourth-place team still wins once in a while. With David taking a Buxton-like scheduled off-day, Hoges fills in to talk about the team with Dan, and both have lots to say about manager Rocco Baldelli. They question his handling of basically the entire roster, from decisions on pinch-hitting and pinch-running to how long to let starters and relievers stay in the game. In the end, though, they are the least impressed with how little impact it seems (so far) the changes he instituted in spring training have made to a team that resembles the one that ended last season far more than the team that cruised into first place last summer. Send us a textDespite some good pitching performances, the Minnesota Twins lost another series, this time three games out of four to the Kansas City Royals in Kansas City. David and Dan see plenty of culprits, mostly on the lineup card in the poor performances by Jose Miranda and Byron Buxton (whom both of them hope is able to tend to family matters while he is away). The lack of fundamentals in baserunning and fielding are concerning to David, while Dan thinks that Rocco Baldelli mishandled his trip to talk to home plate umpire Nic Lentz during Game 1 of this series. They discuss whether David Festa or Zebby Matthews will assume a more permanent role in the rotation in Pablo Lopez's absence, and they talk about whose spot on the roster Brooks Lee will take. Send us a textWhile Game 1 wasn't pretty, the Minnesota Twins did finally get one win and then another one to take two of three against the Chicago White Sox, evening them up with the rest of the AL Central's teams at 2-4. So in that sense, it's a whole new ballgame for the final 156 this Major League Baseball season. David and Dan discuss the lows of Chris Paddack's start and then the highs of the games that followed, which featured improved outputs from Byron Buxton and Carlos Correa. David really likes how Rocco Baldelli is managing leadoff man Matt Wallner, while Dan struggles to justify keeping Paddack on the active roster should the veteran starter struggle again the next time through the rotation. David was happy to see Rocco Baldelli move to steal some bases, while Dan thinks Rocco should have given Bailey Ober an earlier hook in Game 3 -- if he chose to start him at all. Dan also asks what role an under-the-weather Eddy Julien has on this team, and David ponders whether this 0-3 start will get even worse against the Chicago White Sox this week. Guests Jane Kelly founded Eat Your Books in 2009 with her sister Fiona Nugent because she wanted to easily find recipes in her extensive cookbook collection, and reasoned there are other cooks with the same need. She has spent the past 15 years building the site into a search engine for 2.6 million recipes found in cookbooks, food magazines, and online. Previously, she held senior roles in television and music for the Virgin Group in the UK. Katie Thacher leads CookShelf, which now manages Eat Your Books and is building the next iteration of the product. A lifelong cook and cookbook lover, Katie spent most of her career in product management for consumer tech products, most recently spending 6 years at Amazon working on Kindle and Amazon Music. After leaving Amazon, she wanted to combine her love of cooking with her love of building great tech products, which led her to reach out to Jane about working together on Eat Your Books. In addition, she co-owns a wine bar called Little Thing in Seattle's Beacon Hill neighborhood. Episode Summary This episode explores how technology bridges the gap between physical cookbooks and digital resources by making more recipes available to cooks. Jane and Katie discuss their journey with Eat Your Books, a platform that helps home cooks easily find and utilize recipes from their personal cookbook collections and an almost endless array of digital resources.
