In this Summer Coolers edition of NHL Wraparound, hosts Neil Smith and Vic Morren dive deep into the state of the Dallas Stars, a team that continues to knock on the door but can't quite break it down. After a heartbreaking third straight Conference Final loss, the Stars made a surprising offseason move—replacing head coach Peter DeBoer with Glen Gulutzan, signaling a reset without dismantling their core.Dallas finished the 2024–25 regular season with 102 points and were one of the West's most dangerous teams on paper. But after a Game 1 offensive outburst against Edmonton in the Conference Final, the Stars' scoring completely dried up. That collapse has left major questions about leadership, playoff preparedness, and whether the window to win with Jamie Benn, Tyler Seguin, and Matt Duchene is beginning to close. The episode covers offseason moves, the state of the blue line, the future of Jake Oettinger, and why the new coach might finally be what pushes this veteran-heavy team to the next level.IN THIS EPISODE:[00:00] Dallas Stars 2024–25 recap: Another deep run, same ending[00:38] Jim Nill wins GM of the Year again—but makes a major change[01:00] Glen Gulutzan replaces Peter DeBoer: Why now?[02:00] Veteran core aging: Benn, Seguin, Duchene[03:00] Free agent re-signings: Duchene, Benn, Blackwell, Bork, Lundkvist[03:45] Offseason additions: RFA Rodak Faksa returns, Nathan Bastian signs[04:15] Key departures: Mason Marchment, Matt Dumba, Cody Ceci[05:00] Offensive depth: Still dangerous despite losses[05:45] Defensive pairings: Heiskanen, Lindell, Harley, Laaksonen, Burns[06:00] Goaltending: Oettinger & DeSmith remain the tandem[07:00] Miro Heiskanen's return and Brent Burns' arrival[08:00] Rantanen's revenge against Colorado: A defining moment[09:00] Why the scoring collapsed vs. Edmonton[10:00] Was DeBoer's message stale? Can Gulutzan change the tone?[11:00] Final thoughts: The Stars are a contender—but for how much longer?KEY TAKEAWAYS:The window is closing: Benn, Seguin, and Duchene are aging, and the opportunity to win with this core is narrowing.Jim Nill's bold coaching change to bring back Glen Gulutzan—whom he originally let go—shows humility and a desire to fix culture from the top down.Scoring vanished in the Conference Final, and questions remain about why so many top-tier players underperformed.Jake Oettinger is still one of the league's top young goaltenders, but he'll need to carry the load again in 2025–26.Miro Heiskanen's return to full health, along with the quiet addition of Brent Burns, could be critical for defensive stability. The Central Division is loaded, with Dallas, Winnipeg, and Colorado all battling for top spots—but one of them is destined to go home early, again.RESOURCE LINKS:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgBj1LV0-DMfBhcRPSJZLjAX (Twitter): https://twitter.com/NHLWraparoundNeil Smith: https://twitter.com/NYCNeilVic Morren: https://www.linkedin.com/in/vic-morren-7038737/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nhlwraparound/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@nhlwraparoundFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61555451139787#NHL #Hockey #Podcast #DallasStars #GlenGulutzan #PeterDeBoer #JakeOettinger #JimNill #JamieBenn #TylerSeguin #MattDuchene #ColinBlackwell #NilsLundkvist #MavrikBourque #RadekFaksa #NathanBastain #MasonMarchment #MikaelGranlund #CodiCeci #EvgeniiDadonov #MattDumba #RoopeHintz #WyattJohnston #JasonRobertson #MikkoRantanen #SamSteele #OskarBack #MiroHeiskanen #EsaLindell #ThomasHarley #IlyaLyubushkin #LianBichsel #CaseyDeSmith

About the Guest(s)Nis Benn is the co-founder of Hyme Energy, a Copenhagen-based company pioneering solutions to decarbonise industrial heat at scale. With a background spanning sociology, consulting, political organising, and deep-tech startups, Nis has consistently chased high-leverage, system-level climate solutions — from nuclear innovation to Hyme's molten-salt heat storage.Episode SummaryIn this episode of Shape the System, host Vincent Turner speaks with Nis Benn of Hyme Energy about one of the world's biggest yet overlooked climate challenges: industrial heat. While most clean-energy discussions focus on electricity, heat accounts for roughly a third of global emissions — largely produced by directly burning coal, oil, or gas for steam and high-temperature processes.Nis traces his path from climate-centred politics and nuclear R&D to Hyme, where the team is commercialising molten-salt thermal storage. Hyme uses renewable electricity to heat a specialised hydroxide salt to ~520°C, storing energy as heat and dispatching it as steam — the medium many factories already use. That retrofit-friendly approach lets manufacturers decarbonise without ripping out existing systems.Beyond emissions, the economics matter: industry spends trillions annually on fossil energy for heat. Hyme's model pairs lower, more predictable energy costs with reliability and innovative commercial structures (e.g., heat offtake agreements in partnership with asset managers), allowing customers to “buy heat” as a service. On the engineering front, Hyme's corrosion breakthroughs enable long lifetimes using standard stainless steels in most of the system — a key step to bankability and scale. Hyme is targeting first commercial plants from 2026 and meaningful scale by 2030.Key TakeawaysIndustrial heat is massive: About one-third of global emissions come from process heat, much of it from direct fossil combustion.Store power as heat: Hyme heats molten hydroxide salts with renewables, then delivers on-demand steam for existing processes.Minimal retrofit: Because many factories already run on steam, Hyme can slot in with limited disruption.Compelling economics: Rising energy and CO₂ costs + access to cheap renewables = strong business cases and multi-market optimisation.Path to scale: First FID-ready projects in 2026, scaling via partnerships/licensing toward hundreds of plants through the 2030s.Notable Quotes“Around 30% of global emissions come from industrial heat — it's the single biggest emissions sector.” — Nis Benn“If you already use steam, Hyme can just produce it another way.” — Nis Benn“Reliability is what industrial players care about most — our job is to deliver that with renewables.” — Nis Benn“You can ‘buy heat' as an outcome — not worry about the kit behind it.” — Vincent TurnerResourcesHyme Energy: https://hyme.energyBackground reading on industrial heat, thermal storage, and energy marketsShape the System is an independent podcast with support from KPMG High Growth VenturesMore about KPMG High Growth VenturesScale up for success. We had an absolute blast chatting to Benn this week. He's not just ebullient and funny he's also a heck of a climber. He makes YouTube content with his older brother and one of the best climbers in the world, Noah. It's a funny position to be in, to be one of the best climbers around but to have a brother who is even better so we did talk about that a bit but we talked about a range of stuff, most of which I forget now, but it was good I remember that! Israel has faced fierce criticism at the UN Security Council in New York of its plan to step up the war in Gaza. Britain's envoy said an expanded offensive would open the way to more bloodshed. But the US representative insisted Israel could decide how to ensure its own security. Also, the Met Police says the majority of the more than 500 people arrested for supporting the banned group Palestine Action yesterday were aged over 50. And the voice of Mr Benn -- the actor Ray Brooks -- has died.

While Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is often portrayed as a political improviser who seizes opportunities and dodges land mines as they occur to preserve his hold on power, he is in fact guided by a clear and consistent mission, Haaretz editor-in-chief Aluf Benn tells the Haaretz Podcast. “Netanyahu’s strategy, since the inception of his career, and even before he became a professional politician, has been to prevent the establishment of a Palestinian state and diminish the Palestinian national movement,” said Benn. As the war has worn on and with Netanyahu’s latest decision to escalate the conflict in Gaza instead of working to end it, Benn says the contention that the argument that Netanyahu does not really share the ideology of his farthest-right coalition partners – National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich – does not hold up. “I've yet to see one area of disagreement between Netanyahu and Smotrich and Ben-Gvir,” Benn said. While the premier may “hide behind” excuses of being pushed and pulled by outside forces, Benn believes he has a firm grip on power and knows exactly what he is doing. In his wide-ranging conversation with podcast host Allison Kaplan Sommer, Benn also discusses the 20th anniversary of the Gaza disengagement – which Israel’s right blames for the events of October 7, his brewing confrontation with the IDF Chief of Staff over Gaza, and whether Netanyahu can face the voters after essentially abandoning the remaining Gaza hostages. Andrew Murray, the quiet Cavan boxer, walked a Rocky Road unlike any other. As a child, he battled Perthes disease, and, despite doctors warning he could end up in a wheelchair if he boxed, the young Andrew was transfixed by Eubank and Benn, igniting an unyielding desire to step between the ropes. He defied medical caution, joining Cavan Boxing Club, and rose to become a three-time Irish Elite champion and a two-weight professional Irish champion. Andrew fought alongside a golden generation of Irish pros like Bernard Dunne, Andy Lee, John Duddy and Matthew Macklin. He shared bills with champions and contenders, from Paul McCloskey's world title night against Amir Khan, to fighting on the same card as Tyson Fury, and proudly headlining RTE fight nights. From a challenging loss to Gavin Rees after preparing in remote Ros Muc, to his final victory on a raucous Henry Coyle night in Mayo, Andrew's career was a testament to his quiet determination. The clearing price of optionality in the market is impacted by a myriad of factors. To be sure, the economy and corporate profit cycle, the stance of monetary policy and geopolitical risk all matter. Flows in the derivatives markets are also of consequence as they impact the environment for supply and demand. And in this context, it was excellent to welcome Benn Eifert, Founder and Managing Partner of QVR Advisors, back to the Alpha Exchange.Benn brings a data-driven lens to today's complex volatility markets, and in this conversation, he discusses the unintended consequences of crowded risk-managed option strategies, such as buffer ETFs and overwriting. We explore how structural flows have drained the volatility risk premium, especially from the front end of the curve where the flow has especially been one way, leading to substantial optionality being sold into the marketplace. Benn states that since 2012, the VRP has largely vanished, leaving the returns to owning short-dated straddles actually positive since then. For risk-managed ETFs, the implications are unfavorable as many of these strategies often reduce beta without providing meaningful downside protection, results that are posted on the QVR website. From Benn's perspective, even for a large and liquid options complex like the S&P 500, the sheer volume of capital chasing the same trade is distorting expected returns. We finish the conversation by exploring the evolution of QVR's trade implementation and risk management practices. Here, Benn shares that the listed options market has become a focal point relative to years ago when OTC products transacted bi-laterally with large banks were of greater importance. The approach now leans into technology and seeking to exit and enter trades more passively, with a market-making approach.I hope you enjoy this episode of the Alpha Exchange, my conversation with Benn Eifert.
The playoffs are wrapped up, though the Panthers are probably still partying hard, and it seems there's more hockey to talk than ever! First off, we talk Sergei Kostitsyn — the other half of the brotherly duo (we talked Andrei back in November) who played for both the Habs and the Predators, and became known as much for their off-ice exploits as for their performance at the rink! We also learn why it pays to have good linemates and play junior hockey for the Hunter brothers! Then we do a quick draft recap — not many surprises as round one went pretty much chalk. The trades were the thing that sent ripples as some big names are moving to new teams — Noah Dobson to MTL, John Gibson to DET, and JJ Peterka to UTAH, with Michael Kesselring shufflin' back to Buffalo. As teams jockey for financial position in advance of free agency opening on Tuesday, some old faces — Tavares, Bennett and Benn have already decided that the grass isn't greener — buckle up kids, it's about to get spicy! Finally, we dip into the mailbag to answer some great questions from the listeners out there — plus, will co-host Tom finally make amends with Lindy?
Former Rangers pitcher Derek Holland joined the show to discuss his charity event, the Mavs picking Flagg, the Stars re-signing Benn, and more.

Back on the Cboe floor, Cem Karsan sits down with Benn Eifert to trace the fault lines shaping today's volatility regime. They dig into why market structure, not just macro, is driving outcomes... from the reflexive cycles of implied vol to the growing influence of structured product flows and zero-day options. With correlations breaking down and dispersion rising, Benn makes the case that path matters more than magnitude. It's a conversation about what happens when liquidity fragments, when the Fed can't step in, and when legacy playbooks stop working. Listen to an interview with Hanna Benn, along with ISO's principal oboe Jennifer Christen and principal bassoon Ivy Ringel. Benn's solo work defies classification, featuring intricate vocal layering with refined electronic production. She's contributed to high profile projects across the modern music landscape. As a vocalist, she can be heard on Meshell Ndegeocello's Grammy winning album "The Omnichord Real Book" and the Academy Award nominated soundtrack for "Everything Everywhere All at Once." As a composer, her work has been performed at Carnegie Hall.
