What if death could knock on your door — quite literally — before claiming a life? Would you answer? Would you believe it? And what strange thread connects these events in Wales to a death in America? In this eerie real-life account from 19th-century Wales, a tailor living in a remote farmhouse near Newcastle Emlyn is disturbed by strange and persistent sounds — knocking at doors and windows, ghostly wailing in the night, and an uncanny sense that something is coming. Witnesses hear it too. The knocking grows louder. And then it reaches a crescendo… But the story doesn't end there. In fact, it's only when news arrives from across the Atlantic that the full meaning of these uncanny spirit sounds becomes clear. On this episode, Mark explores a chilling tale of death omens, haunted houses, and the old folk belief that death itself gives warning — if you know how to listen. Explore the lore... if you dare! ORDER PARANORMAL SWANSEA AND GOWER BY MARK REES: Get Mark's latest "Ghosts of Wales" book "Paranormal Swansea and Gower" now! You can order it online here. The Ghosts and Folklore of Wales podcast explores the eerie world of Welsh ghosts, ghost stories, lore, myths, and legends. Launched by author and journalist Mark Rees (Ghosts of Wales, Paranormal Wales) in early 2020, this weird and wonderful podcast delves into the country's countless curious subjects, blending decades of research from books and articles with long-lost tales from dusty old tomes. From "real-life" encounters with the uncanny to fantastical adventures from the Mabinogion, new episodes are uploaded monthly and feature everything from pesky poltergeists to fire-breathing dragons, with the odd wicked — and not-so-wicked — witch along the way. Alongside the regular stories, you can expect the occasional special guest, live ghost hunts, and all sorts of quirky surprises from a Welsh storyteller with original ideas. Seasonal specials include dark folklore and Gothic Halloween (Nos Calan Gaeaf) traditions, plus everyone's favourite skull-headed Christmas visitor, the Mari Lwyd. Dare you explore haunted Wales? From the sublime mountains and cascading waterfalls to bustling cities and remote farms, journey through the paranormal and unexplained in all corners of Cymru. Think of it as unlocking the Welsh X-Files with some tenuous Ghostbusters references and terrible sound effects along the way! Be sure to subscribe so you never miss a spooky episode. Entre sus novelas realistas cabe destacar: The face that must die (El rostro que debía morir, 1983); The count of eleven (La cuenta de once, 1991) y The one safe place (El único lugar seguro, 1995). Ha sacado a la luz antologías como New tales of the Cthulhu mythos (1980), New terrors (1980), los primeros cinco volúmenes de Best new horror (1990-1994), y Uncanny banquet (1992). You have a data ghost. The excess of information we share online – photos, posts, messages, locations – creates a digital doppelganger that blurs the line between human and non-human, living and dead. Artists like U5 and Bill Viola reckon with this excess of image, data, and self-surveillance creating works that grapple with the uncanny in its digital manifestations. In this week's episode of Tomorrow Is The Problem, host Dr. Donna Honarpisheh sits down with anonymous artist collective U5 member, Berit Seidel and Kris Ravetto-Biagioli, a professor of cinema and digital media at UCLA, to discuss surveillance technology and the digital uncanny in the works of U5 and Bill Viola.Tomorrow is the Problem is brought to you by the Knight Foundation Art + Research Center and is produced in partnership with FRQNCY Media.

Millions of tourists flock to London each year, eager to snap a selfie in front of Buckingham Palace or Big Ben. But beyond the crowds lies a darker – and distinctly stranger – side to the city: a gothic metropolis haunted by tales of demons, poltergeists and murders most foul. Jon Bauckham talks to author and historian Clive Bloom about some of the capital's spookiest stories, and why he believes that the eeriest encounters tend to unfold in the most mundane of places. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for May 10, 2025 is: uncanny un-KAN-ee adjective Uncanny is typically used to describe something that is strange or unusual in a way that is surprising or difficult to understand. It can also describe something that seems to have a supernatural character or origin. // The child has an uncanny ability to recognize streets and locations she's seen only once or twice before. // The lights suddenly flickered, and we were both overcome with an eerie, uncanny feeling. See the entry > Examples: "... as Nelson Moultrie walked through the cemetery and observed trees growing in ways that resemble the shapes of people, like one that bore an uncanny resemblance to a pair of legs, she said she's already felt the presence of the people buried there." — Laura Liebman, The Post & Courier (Charleston, South Carolina), 21 Mar. 2025 Did you know? Uncanny describes that which unsettles us, such as disquieting observations, or mysterious situations and circumstances. Strip the word of its prefix, though, and you're left with canny, a word that can be used as a synonym for clever and prudent. While canny and uncanny don't appear to be antonyms, they both come from an early Scots word canny meaning "free from risk; wise, prudent, cautious." And in Scots, canny has for centuries had a secondary meaning more similar to that of its mysterious cousin: the Oxford English Dictionary defines a sense of the word used chiefly in negative constructions (e.g., “not canny”) to describe what is not safe to be involved with, or more broadly, what is not in accordance with what is right or natural, as in "the idea is not canny." Rather uncanny.
