Send us Fan MailWhile we're editing our next episode (out before the end of the month!), we're very excited to share this adaptation of Fitzgerald's "The Dance," which first appeared in Red Book exactly 100 years ago. Although not widely known, "The Dance" is important for two reasons: it's Fitzgerald's most overt attempt at a murder mystery and his most direct confrontation of race, including the lynching crisis of the era. In this episode, students at the Bentley School in California under the direction of their English and history teachers, Dr. Richard Gabri and Dr. Destiney Linker, dramatize the story while calling attention to the composition process that conceals a major clue to the meaning. We saw this presentation at the American Literature Association in May 2026 and absolutely loved this approach to creative pedagogy. Congratulations to the students: Jude Marietta, Niko Schenk, Cookie McManus, Evelyn Van Huysse, Evan Sobel, Ezra Graham, Olivia Bussey, and Isaac Lloyd, who recorded this version of their presentation especially for us. And congrats to Dr. Gabri and Dr. Linker for the opportunity to witness these talents in action.

Then the train comes, and he is gone.It falls to Van Cheele to find out what his friend meant. What he discovers, by the pool in the oak coppice, is a boy with light brown eyes that hold something tigerish in them, lying in the sun with an ease that belongs to no child he has ever met.The aunt will find him charming. The dog will not stay in the house.Saki understood that the old country — the country before the parishes and the property lines — was never entirely tamed. The animals there talk."Gabriel-Ernest" was first published in 1909 in the Westminster Gazette, and later collected in Reginald in Russia and Other Sketches (1910).Saki was the pen name of Hector Hugh Munro (1870–1916), a writer of savage wit and supernatural unease. He was killed on the Western Front in the closing months of the Somme campaign.

Good morning. “Do not be so open-minded that your brains fall out.” I was reminded of that quip from G. K. Chesterton last week, when I visited The Old Ferryboat Inn in Cambridgeshire, which not only claims to be the oldest pub in England (serving ale since 560AD, apparently), but also to have a resident ghost. A young woman took her life for love almost a thousand years ago and local legend has it she's haunted the place ever since, appearing each year on the anniversary of her death: the 17th March. That date also happens to be St Patrick's Day, which is perhaps not the ideal occasion for sober eyewitness testimony. But it's easy to be sceptical…. According to a recent National Folklore Survey, more than a third of people in England believe in ghosts, and many like the idea of them too. “A haunted house at the top of your street is fantastic,” said Caroline Gibson from Pontefract in Yorkshire, speaking to the BBC about a poltergeist who is currently trending on social media, after featuring on the paranormal podcast, Uncanny. The occult does not sit easily with mainstream Christianity. The Church warns against séances, spirit-hunting and attempts to conjure the dead. Yet in an age inclined to explain everything materially, Christianity insists that the world does indeed have a spiritual dimension. A problem remains, however, of how to discern between spiritual reality versus superstition — or for that matter, between good versus evil spiritual forces. “Do not be so open-minded that your brains fall out” doesn't really help us with that discernment, but Chesterton, himself a Christian, followed up with another one-liner that might be more useful. “The object of opening the mind, as of opening the mouth, is to shut it again on something solid.” That gets us closer. Open the mind, just not endlessly, to no purpose: open it up to close it again. The risk of being open-minded is that you may sometimes look foolish or naïve. But there is risk too in being so determined never to be gulled, or seemingly unscientific, that you refuse in advance the richness that comes with leading a spiritual life. Ghost stories challenge us to believe that there's more to the world than what we can understand in purely physical terms. Christianity goes further still, teaching that we ourselves are more than merely physical beings. If a haunted house in your street can be called fantastic, then why shouldn't a church be called the same – in both meanings of the word? Fantastic in the modern sense of being great, but also in the older sense of being extra-ordinary. A place for open minds to shut down on something solid.

A bored barrister, stranded by rain in a lonely mountain inn, meets the oddly persistent Mr Tallent who proceeds to read to him. Years later, a death, a will, and a box of interminable manuscripts draw the narrator back into Tallent's orbit, where questions of legacy, obsession, and a strangely lingering presence begin to surface. A wry, quietly uncanny tale about the burdens of bad art and the ghost it can leave behind. This original recording is an audio presentation by Jasper L'Estrange for EnCrypted Horror. “MR TALLENT'S GHOST” by Mary Webb, 1926.

Crypticon Seattle 2026: Pets In Horror Panel

The Scariest Things

Play Episode Listen Later May 11, 2026 59:17

Frodo the cat serves as the ultimate horror witness in A Quiet Place: Day One (with Lupita Nyong’o) Crypticon Seattle, the great Pacific Northwest horror convention, has once again come and gone, but the memories linger. The panels are what make the convention feel like a class reunion. The panels are produced entirely by volunteer experts from across the region and are the ultimate in fan interaction. This is what it feels like to create a horror community, sharing our ideas and experiences with each other. This year, I decided to record some of the panels I participated in and attended to give you a sense of what happens at these events. This Pets in Horror panel was hosted by Brien Gorham, and I participated in it along with Kathy Fennesy and Todd Johnstson. If you are a long-time reader of our website or a listener of our podcast, you will know that I have a big ol’ soft spot for pets in horror. Whether they are the MacGuffins, the heroes, or the villains of the story, pets provide strong emotional connective tissue within horror constructs. The use of pets also sparks some great debates regarding the narrative use of animals. Because we have such a natural affinity for critters, horror movies tend to exploit those feelings by putting the animals in peril. Fair, or not? We will talk about that in this discussion. Brien was inspired by the success of last year’s remarkable film Good Boy which we have been a huge proponent for. You can use that link to listen to an interview with director Ben Leonberg, who discusses how he coaxed an award-winning performance from his pet dog, Indy. That movie, however, is just the tip of a very big trope iceberg. Thank you to Jason and Jasen for putting me on this panel, as it is something near and dear to me, and to many attending Crypticon. Brien Gorham outlined his panel discussion topics for this panel: “Indy the Dog from Good Boy has become the latest in a line of cinematic pets to steal our hearts, but domestic animals have a long history in horror movies. Whether that be as a witness, antagonist, or, as in the case of Indy, a protagonist. Let’s discuss how our collective best friends have been represented in horror films.” Introductions Opening question: If you could choose one pet from a horror movie to have in your home, who would you choose and why? Some larger questions that can be applied to any category: How do our personal relationships with pets affect how we see them in stories? (Please feel free to include personal stories where appropriate) How does the motivation of a pet differ from human motivation? Altruism? How do we recognize animal performances? (Indy's acting win) What resources are available for those who are sensitive to animal violence?  Part 1: Pets as Witnesses Possible Movies: Cat's Eye, Poltergeist, The Hills Have Eyes I and II Let's start with movies where a family pet serves as a witness or bystander to an individual or family crisis. In these cases, what purpose does the inclusion of the pet serve? How much do we hate it when pets are introduced just to be killed off for sympathy? Part 2: Pets as Heroes Possible Movies: Good Boy, Cat's Eye, Phenomena, The Hills Have Eyes Next, let's explore pets that go above and beyond, playing an active role in saving the day. Which movie pets do you most admire? How do certain traits of specific animals play into this heroism? How much do we hate it when animals sacrifice themselves for humans? Part 3: Pets as Antagonists  Possible Movies: Cujo, Lake Placid, The Uncanny, Uninvited, Pet Sematary, The Black Cat (any version) What happens when man's best friend turns violent, and our furry friends rebel against us? The most terrifying pets in horror? The most heartbreaking transformations? Closing What beloved pets have we not seen represented in horror movies? PET HORROR RESOURCES You can check out our Favorite Horror Movie Dogs Dead List for our updated list of horror hounds for your reference. Kathy Fennessy is a former president of the Seattle Film Critics Society and runs the Seattle Film Blog. She has a blog post titled “Good Boy and Other House Pets in Horror: Purrs, barks, Growls, and Deadly Attacks.“ I find that Kathy is the unofficial research librarian for Crypticon Seattle and has a deep and thorough knowledge of the genre. For those of you who get triggered by animal harm or death in movies, please visit “Does the Dog Die?“ It’s a great resource for people who need to filter their movies for moments that will trigger anxiety, with the primary trope being that of harm to dogs. It also covers things like harm to children and rape, which are non-starter elements for many people. A Recording of Brien Gohram’s Good Boy: Pets in Horror Panel Panelists:Brien Gorham – HostKathy Fennesy Eric LiTodd Johnston Please note: I was using a compressor microphone on the table, so the audio isn’t as clean as it would be with our dynamic podcasting microphones. Todd Johnston, in particular, is a bit faint, though I did boost the audio when he is speaking. Don’t over-adjust your volume, though, because when the conversation turns back to the rest of the panelists, it picks up. I was introduced to Chris Dalla Riva, who I'd describe as an analytics-driven music historian. He wrote Uncharted Territory: What Numbers Tell Us about the Biggest Hit Songs and Ourselves. I know very little about music but I'm fascinated by objective measures of subjective taste. I enjoyed our talk and look forward to reading the book for yet more fascinating question fodder. Topics! * 00:01:14 – Big question: Is taste objective or culturally constructed?* 00:02:01 – Top-down vs. organic creation of hit music in the 50s–60s* 00:03:36 – Why 1950s hits often centered on death and tragedy* 00:05:01 – Data-driven approach: listening to every Billboard #1 song* 00:09:47 – “Vibe shifts” in music (e.g., Kurt Cobain / Smells Like Teen Spirit)* 00:11:20 – How technology shapes music evolution (from Jimi Hendrix to Frank Sinatra)* 00:13:03 – Do lyrics actually matter? Case study: It Wasn't Me* 00:18:01 – Organic viral hits driven by DJs and accidents (pre-internet virality)* 00:29:32 – “Uncanny” factor in hits (e.g., Pumped Up Kicks)* 00:34:08 – Strange trends of the 90s (swing revival, genre fragmentation)* 00:41:10 – Death of monoculture vs. rise of creator freedom in the internet era* 00:52:38 – Taylor Swift as the “last monoculture superstar”House of Strauss is a reader-supported publication. Uncanny, the BBC podcast about paranormal stories, has grown way beyond radio. There's a live theatre tour, a fan convention, it's on YouTube and now a new series called Uncanny Cold Cases. Danny Robbins, the creator of Uncanny, talks about where the idea came from and why he thinks audiences keep coming back.QVC has filed for debt restructuring in the US, as it tries to shrink a debt pile of around $6.6bn. The shopping channel, once a giant of tele-shopping, is up against a new generation of buyers who would rather scroll than sit on the sofa with the remote. TikTok Shop alone has around 30 million users in the UK and is now the fourth biggest beauty retailer in the country. Katie Linsell, UK retail reporter at Bloomberg News, lays out what's gone wrong in the US. Rob Locke, presenter on ITV's Shop on TV, talks about what it's really like to sell live in the middle of the night. Hungary has a new Prime Minister. Péter Magyar's win has ended Viktor Orbán's 16 years in power, and he's promised big changes to the media. That includes rewriting Orbán-era media laws, pausing public broadcasting until it can be proven impartial, and shaking up the way the state hands out advertising money. Amrit Singh, Professor of Practice at NYU School of Law, and Iván Nagy, Hungarian political journalist and fellow at the Columbia Journalism Review, discuss what it's been like to work as a journalist in Hungary.Presenter: Katie Razzall and Ros Atkins Producer: Lisa Jenkinson Content Producer: Lucy Wai Researcher: Ruth Waites Technical Coordinator: Chris Brown

Jeff and Brian begin a Horror Joy mini-series on haunted and haunting houses by discussing Stanley Kubrick's 1980 adaptation of Stephen King's The Shining and the Overlook Hotel as a possibly sentient space. They ask whether the hotel merely contains ghosts or actively amplifies violence, racism, sexism, and repetition. They critique the “Indian burial ground” trope, discuss Grady's claims that Jack has “always been” the caretaker, the final photograph's time-loop implications, and scholarship on hereditary or cyclical violence. They emphasize the film's maze motifs (hedge maze, carpets, corridors) and consider the steadicam and “autonomous camera” as intensifying dread, while noting Dick Hallorann's disposability and ending with “joy” found in the film's craft and unsettling images.References:Graham Allen. ‘A Mad Image, Chafed by Reality': Kubrick, the Uncanny and the 4th of July 1921 Photograph in The ShiningF. It’s not a good day. If she can confront her mother's legacy and overcome her family's generational trauma, she just might find a way to preserve the skunkworks and reconcile with her sister…but digging into her family's past is thornier than it seems, and the secrets she uncovers will force Ellie to choose between her family and the universe itself.
