This week on the podcast, Patrick and Tracy welcome Naomi Kritzer, author of Obstetrix. About Obstetrix: Doctor Liz has just been acquitted for performing the last abortion in North Dakota when she’s kidnapped. They’re not just any kidnappers, but a fundamentalist cult, deep in the rural west, without respect for law or decency, and in desperate need of an OB/GYN. Guarded, isolated, without access to the outside world, Liz nevertheless is treated with respect as the only doctor on the compound, but she is very aware of what happened to the last obstetrician they kidnapped. She must escape, and bring help to the girls trapped at the compound, if it’s the last thing she does. About Naomi Kritzer: NAOMI KRITZER has been re-reading favorite books since childhood, and probably still has passages from A Wrinkle in Time memorized. She writes for both adults and teens, including Catfishing on CatNet and Chaos on CatNet from Tor Teen and Liberty’s Daughter from Fairwood Press. Her writing has won the Hugo Award, the Nebula Award, the Edgar Award, the Locus Award, and the Minnesota Book Award. Naomi lives in St. Paul, Minnesota, with her family and three cats. The number of cats is subject to change without notice. This week's picks: Naomi #1: Schmigadoon! Online romance fraud and 'catfishing' – when someone pretends to be someone they're not - is a problem across the globe. It causes financial and emotional devastation, yet many people refuse to take it seriously. Datshiane Navanayagam speaks to two women from the UK and Sweden who have spent years rebuilding their lives after being targeted by men they met on dating sites.Pernilla Sjöholm is from Sweden. She was conned by the infamous Simon Leviev, the so-called "Tinder Swindler" and allegedly scammed out of the equivalent of $65,000. Pernilla is now an international speaker on AI, cybersecurity and fraud prevention. She also co-founded IDfier, working on digital identity verification, and is the author of Swindled Never After. Anna Rowe is pushing for greater support for romance fraud victims after her own experience of being conned. In 2015 she fell in love with a man who she had met online. After 14 months she discovered that the man she was in a relationship with, ‘Antony Ray' was using a fake identity and leading a double life which left Anna feeling emotionally and sexually violated. Anna is now dedicated to helping victims of all types of romance fraud and catfishing through her platforms LoveSaid and Catch the Catfish.(Image: (L) Anna Rowe, credit Nina Rangoy. Someone tells you they love you, mirrors your values, and makes you feel seen in a way you haven't felt in years. Then they vanish, come back with an excuse, and your body floods with relief. That cycle is not romance. It's a strategy, and it's driving a surge in romance fraud, catfishing, and online dating scams that leave victims with financial loss and trauma that looks a lot like PTSD.In this episode we sit down with Anna Rowe, founder of catchthecatfish.com and part of lovesaid.org, to map the real mechanics behind these crimes against women: mirroring, love bombing, isolation, and trauma bonding. Anna shares how a perpetrator can maintain overlapping relationships, how shame keeps people silent, and why the most damaging moment is often what happens after the fraud is exposed when victims meet disbelief from friends, banks, or even police. We also get practical about what's changing right now: deepfakes, face swap video, and voice cloning that can make a scammer look and sound “verified” on calls and voice notes. We unpack celebrity romance fraud, the “pig butchering” romance-plus-crypto investment scam, and the first responder toolkit Anna built to help law enforcement respond without blaming the victim and to safeguard people from repeat targeting, spyware, and data resale. If you've ever dated online, have a loved one who has, or work in victim services, this conversation will change how you spot coercive control in a digital relationship.

In 2016, Michelle Hadley was arrested and accused of staging a bizarre kidnapping plot and framing her ex's new fiancée through a series of disturbing online messages. Investigators believed the threats, which described a violent abduction fantasy, were part of an elaborate hoax created by Michelle herself. She was jailed and faced serious charges… until the case began to unravel. As detectives dug deeper, they uncovered evidence pointing to a far more complex scheme than anyone initially believed. This episode is sponsored by:Aura Frames: get $25 off their best-selling Carver Mat frame with code TCKR at auraframes.com. On this eye-opening episode of Fishing the DMV, we break down the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR) budget crisis and what it means for anglers across Virginia, Maryland, Washington DC, and the entire DMV fishing region. Ryan Brown and Mike Bednarski dive deep into the budget cuts, conservation funding issues, and declining fishing license sales that are putting serious pressure on fishery management. If you care about bass fishing, trout fishing, striped bass, or freshwater fishing in Virginia, this is a must-listen conversation that connects the dots between policy, conservation, and your time on the water. We also break down the bigger picture—why the traditional “user-funded conservation model” (hunters and anglers funding wildlife management) is starting to fail, and what a new funding system could look like in Virginia. From fish stocking cuts to habitat management challenges, this episode gives you the real story behind what's happening and how it could impact your next fishing trip. If you're serious about Virginia fishing reports, bass fishing tips, fisheries management, conservation, and the future of fishing in the DMV, this episode delivers critical insight you won't hear anywhere else.If you want to get involved you can email Mike at mike.bednarski@dwr.virginia.gov and his phone is 804 432-7244. As a teenager, he took things to the next level—launching his own kayak and dialing in his approach to kayak catfishing, drift fishing, anchored fishing, and structure fishing. Over time, he refined his techniques and built a reputation for consistently catching trophy blue catfish, flathead catfish, and channel catfish. In this episode, Tim gives us an in-depth breakdown of Kerr Lake catfishing patterns, seasonal movements, and proven tactics to help you catch more fish. We dive into:• The best areas on Kerr Lake to target big catfish• How to locate fish using electronics, sonar, and side imaging• The most effective catfish baits (cut bait, live bait, and fresh shad)• When to use drift fishing vs anchoring techniques• How weather, current, and water temperature impact the bite• Gear setups including catfish rods, reels, rigs, and terminal tackleTim also shares stories from the water—including a jaw-dropping 130-pound blue catfish caught on a guided trip—and explains what it takes to consistently land fish of that caliber on Kerr Lake.Since launching King's Catfishing Guide Service and his YouTube channel in 2017, Tim has guided hundreds of successful trips and takes pride in introducing beginners, kids, and families to the sport of catfishing and outdoor fishing adventures. Was steckt psychologisch hinter Identitätsdiebstahl, Cyberstalking und Catfishing? You may be shocked to hear that musicians sometimes lie about who they are. Some may say this is not shocking at all - it's almost a tradition. But there's a meaningful difference between Ziggy Stardust and a band from North Dakota claiming to be a Chinese black metal act to game the press. In this episode we try to map that difference. We spend a healthy portion of time on what we're not talking about - aliases, concept bands, anonymity for anonymity's sake - before getting into the genuinely murky territory of bands that have used fabricated identities for commercial advantage. We cover the fake Zombies that toured America simultaneously in 1969, The Masked Marauders and the elaborate Rolling Stone prank that accidentally became a real album, Silibil n Brains, Dundee rappers who got signed to Island Records on the strength of their American accents, before discussing Ghost Bath, the project that brought this whole phenomenon into focus for us.Along the way we also get into AI-generated music, Milli Vanilli (and why what they did is arguably less dishonest than what plenty of current pop stars do routinely, and a genuinely unresolved case involving a supposedly Iraqi black metal band that may or may not have put its members in real danger. The question running through all of it: does context change how we hear music? And if it does — what does that say about us?Highlights:00:00 Introduction01:24 Catfish and Hoax Bands Explained02:11 Patreon05:10 Famous Death Hoaxes05:42 Mystique Versus Scams09:02 Not Aliases or Roleplay10:43 Anonymity and Masks13:23 Fake Touring Lineups19:03 Concept Bands and Bits24:28 AI Bands and Deception27:54 Outright Music Scams30:13 Milli Vanilli Then and Now30:53 Pop Star Fraud Culture33:39 Mask Marauders Hoax35:20 Orion Elvis Impostor38:50 Platinum Weird Backstory40:25 Syllable American Rap Ruse43:38 Jana Mystery Metal Band46:06 Velvet Cocoon Troll Scam48:36 Ghost Bath Identity Debate54:40 Context and Cultural Relativism58:10 Ghost Bath Fallout and Ethics01:02:53 Outro

Ahead of the 30th anniversary of the Dunblane massacre on Friday, presenter Anita Rani speaks to three women whose lives changed for ever that day; Melanie Reid, a journalist who was one of the first at the scene in Dunblane that morning, Rosemary Hunter, one of three women leaders of The Snowdrop Campaign that changed UK gun laws and Anna Hall, who grew up in Dunblane and is the director of a Channel 4 documentary about the shootings, The Dunblane Tapes. How would you feel if everyone in your household forgot your birthday? After a woman's social media post saying her family had forgotten hers went viral, Anita talks to the author Poorna Bell and the journalist Nell Frizzell about whether forgetting a spouse's birthday is simply a careless moment or the sign of something deeper.Catfishing is the act of creating a fake online persona to deceive others for romantic, financial, or malicious reasons. This happened to 19-year old Sasha-Jay Davies, from Aberdare in Wales who for almost four years has been accused of leading men on, arranging to meet them and not showing up, and been harassed by complete strangers, all because someone else has been using her photos without permission on social media. BBC Wales reporter Eleri Griffiths has been covering the story and joins us along with Reagan Brien, a solicitor at Cohen Davis who has worked on similar cases.New research carried out by the University of California in the US has revealed that a blood test can detect dementia in women, years before they have symptoms. Dr Sheona Scales, director of research at Alzheimer's Research UK, explains the research findings and what it could potentially mean for women's dementia diagnosis in the future.Presenter: Anita Rani Producer: Rebecca Myatt

The Tua Tagovailoa debate heats up again, with the Dolphins notably skipping his birthday, potential landing spots like Atlanta and Minnesota discussed, and Geno Smith possibly getting scooped up first — Hollywood can't resist ribbing Joe about how mad he'd be if Miami keeps him. Beyond catfishing, romance scammers are moving in with victims and rewriting wills. Here, Pretend Podcast host Javier Leiva exposes their new playbook.Full show notes and resources can be found here: jordanharbinger.com/1195What We Discuss with Javier Leiva:Romance scams are so common that identical fake stories (architect in Indonesia, talking to Johnny Depp) are used with thousands of victims simultaneously, making them seem like urban legends.Scammers target vulnerable people by checking boxes: isolated from family, cognitive decline, terminal illness, government pension, loneliness. More boxes = bigger mark.Advanced scammers move in with victims, become caregivers, get named as estate executors, then move on to victim's elderly relatives when the person dies.Damage goes beyond money — victims often become unable to trust again and avoid relationships entirely, while family stress affects everyone for years.Watch for red flags: excessive early generosity, isolating behavior, urgent requests bypassing reasoning, password/financial access requests, sob stories. Trust family concerns. And much more...And if you're still game to support us, please leave a review here — even one sentence helps!
