Tonight, we'll read the first half to “The Little Mermaid” written by Hans Christian Andersen and adapted by Snoozecast. The second half will air in our next episode. This story follows the journey of a young mermaid who is willing to give up her life in the sea as a mermaid in order to marry a prince and become human. Originally published in 1837, The Little Mermaid was part of a collection simply titled Fairy Tales Told for Children. Andersen, a Danish author known for his poetic and sometimes melancholy storytelling, wrote many tales that have become classics, including The Ugly Duckling, The Emperor's New Clothes, and The Snow Queen. Unlike the cheerful retellings most children grow up with today, Andersen's original mermaid tale is more bittersweet, filled with longing, sacrifice, and questions about the soul. The story is notable for its vivid underwater world, where mermaids live for centuries but do not possess immortal souls, and where the surface world is mysterious and dangerous. The little mermaid, youngest of her sisters, is drawn not just to the handsome prince she saves, but to the idea of a different kind of existence—one filled with love, human emotion, and perhaps, a soul of her own. — read by 'V' — Sign up for Snoozecast+ to get expanded, ad-free access by going to snoozecast.com/plus! On a bitterly cold January the Gaea Star Band gathers around the stove in the studio at Singing Brook to record Gaea Star Crystal Radio Hour #605, an hour of emotional, compelling, powerful improvised music and songs by Mariam Massaro with Mariam on vocals, acoustic 6- and 12-string guitars, ukulele, dulcimer, Celtic harp, Native flute and mandolin, Bob Sherwood on piano and backing vocals towards the end and Craig Harris on Native low drum and congas. Recorded live, today's show begins with the rich, gentle-yet-powerful “So Many Veils”, a gorgeous folk song with a deeply powerful and affecting vocal from Mariam above tight acoustic guitar, imaginative piano and Ringo-esque conga work from Craig. “Here We Are Again” is a flowing raga based around Mariam's DADGAD tuned 12-string acoustic guitar, a meditation on circles and cycles and “The Snow Queen” is a beautifully classical-sounding winter song with lush, pillowy chording from Bob on piano and Mariam on ukulele and imaginative, range-y vocals and “I Am Bountiful” derives a powerful, rocking primitivism from Mariam's percussive mandolin, skipping congas and suspended, rhythmic piano. Mariam plugs in her crisp, rich-sounding dulcimer for the driving, throbbing “To The Glory”, a beautiful song with excellent ensemble work and a precise, virtuosic vocal that wraps evocatively and intuitively around the pretty, imaginative cadences. “Solare” continues the Gaea Star Band winter tradition of including a sunny, summery song during particularly cold spells and this version is driving, powerful and decorated in another fine vocal from Mariam. We conclude today's show with inspired takes on Mariam's “We Call In The Elements” and “Fire In Our Bellies” from her “Vision Quest” LP. Learn more about Mariam here: http://www.mariammassaro.com

Gaea Star Crystal Radio Hour #601 is an hour of improvised visionary acoustic music performed by The Gaea Star Band featuring Mariam Massaro on vocals, Native flute, acoustic guitar, mandolin, crystal bowl, mandolin and ukulele, Bob Sherwood on piano and Craig Harris on congas and Native drum. Recorded live at Singing Brook Studio in Worthington, Massachusetts in mid-December of 2024, today's show begins with the relaxed, slowly unwinding winter anthem “The Snow Queen”, a lovely folk song that paints winter with rich descriptive stanzas from Mariam. “Somebody Before You” is a rich and beautiful ballad featuring a gorgeous vocal and sweeping Native flute passages from Mariam and expressive piano from Bob and “Blessed Are The Peacemakers” is a dancing, energized minor ballad led by Mariam's chiming mandolin and Craig's propulsive conga work. “Star Ray” is a gorgeous and deeply emotional peace, simultaneously sweet and driving, with affecting, sweeping vocals from Mariam and “Trail Of Light” is a pretty, open folk gospel song propelled by Mariam's tight ukulele strumming and “Sail On” from the “Vision Quest” album appears in a gorgeous, soulful rendition that sustains the magical ukulele-piano interplay of the original supporting Mariam's powerful vocal. “May I Be The Reflection” is a spacious, minimalist arrangement that creates a vast space to feature a fine, evocative conversation between Mariam's powerful lyrics and Native flute passages that seem to fill the horizon and we close today with “Full Moon #2”, a beautifully unusual ode to the night sky that evokes moonlit vistas with clever chording and unusual melody. We're visiting the Kingdom of Arendelle for a Disney Animated movie based on Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale “The Snow Queen.” This icy tale makes for perfect pre-holiday viewing, and audiences agreed when they spent over a billion dollars at the box office to see it, making it the highest-grossing film of 2013 and the highest-grossing animated film of all time, at that time. And it wasn't just audiences who felt the magic, critics agreed and the film racked up awards, including two Oscars: Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song. With one sequel already out and another on the way, the franchise featuring the voice talents of Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell, Jonathan Groff, and Josh Gad has become a cultural phenomenon - and Disney clearly has no plans to let it go. But will Frozen be enough to melt the heart of musical skeptic Beef, or will Lobster or Rum Daddy panic and run away to the mountains? Conceal, don't feel, don't let them know - at least not until the rating! For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. Alas, this week plague has struck the House of Raven (well, the flu has, at least) and Eleanor is laid-up feeling decidedly unwell. So, we have dipped our beaks into the vault, and pecked out a seasonally-appropriate Patreon Exclusive episode to plug the gap!Originally released last December, we start the episode off with a chat about the common characteristics of 'Snow Queens' or 'Snow Witches', including lots of examples, from Babushka and La Befana to Mother Holda and Gryla, as well as Snow Goddesses like Skadi and Chione. After drawing some common threads together, and discussing some problematic issues with many representations of Snow Queens, it's then onto the main event: Martin's telling of his take on "The Snow Queen" - after which we have a little chat about the story and distinctions made between our version and that of Hans Christian Anderson. We really hope you enjoy it, and fingers-crossed that a) Martin doesn't catch 'the lurg' as well, and b) Eleanor feels well enough to record this week's Magic and Medicines episode about the Zodiac - after which we should be back on track! The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays (Magic and Medicines about folk remedies and arcane spells, Three Ravens Bestiary about cryptids and mythical creatures, Dying Arts about endangered heritage crafts, and Something Wicked about folkloric true crime from across history) plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcast Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. For our final Local Legends episode for Series 4, Martin gathers round the campfire to talk about the folklore of Sussex with Dr Paul Quinn.Paul grew up in Sussex, going on to complete his doctorate at the University of Sussex, working on anti-Catholicism and the Early Modern Stage. He has a wide array of interests, from Doctor Who and popular science fiction to the history of fairy tales, Shakespeare and his contemporaries, and the links between Catholic discrimination and magic. After completing his postdoctoral fellowship at Sussex University's Centre for Early Modern and Medieval Studies, he moved ultimately to the University of Chichester, where he teaches modules including ‘Fairy Tales: From Early Modern to Postmodern' and ‘Theatres of Pleasure and Theatres of Pain.' Moreover, if you visit the Sussex folktale centre website, you can get a sense of the scale of the work he encounters, as editor of the Centre's journal Gramarye. Past issues include all sorts of fascinating scholarly articles covering English subjects like Lady Godiva and Queen Mab to Classical tales such as those of Daedalus and Demeter to lively discussions of a vast array of European folklore, from Little Red Riding Hood and Hansel and Gretel to the Snow Queen, Rumpelstiltskin, and The Miller's Daughter.Suffice to say, Paul is an interesting chap, and as someone who has spent most of his life in Sussex he's very well equipped for this conversation – one which compliments our series finale as released on Monday, answering one of the big questions about Sussex folklore thrown up in that recording. To learn more about Paul and his work at The Chichester Centre for Fairy Tales, Fantasy and Speculative Fiction, visit the centre's website at https://www.sussexfolktalecentre.org/The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. The story centers on the struggle between good and evil as experienced by Gerda and her friend, Kay. The first part originally aired on January 4th, 2021. The story is one of Andersen's longest and most highly acclaimed stories. It was also the inspiration for the Disney movie “Frozen.” In the first part, we meet best friends, Gerda and Kay. We also learn of the wicked mirror that splinters into tiny pieces over the land. The shards sometimes land in unknowing people's eyes or hearts, and cause them to be cold-hearted and mean-spirited. This happens to the little boy, Kay. Then he gets whisked away by the Snow Queen's sled. Gerda goes in search of him, and meets a kindly witch. — read by 'V' — Sign up for Snoozecast+ to get expanded, ad-free access by going to snoozecast.com/plus! Learn more about your ad choices. We just can't get enough of Hans Christian Andersen on this show and it's freaking COLD out there anyway, so bundle up in your finest faux fur blankets, clutch a mug of something warm, and harken to this winter tale. That's right, Abbie and Kelsey are finally tackling The Snow Queen.
Tonight, we'll read the first part out of three episodes to the fairy tale “The Snow Queen” by Hans Christian Andersen. The other two parts will air in the next two weeks. All three episodes first aired in January of 2021. The story centers on the struggle between good and evil as experienced by Gerda and her friend, Kay. The story is one of Andersen's longest and most highly acclaimed stories. It was also the inspiration for the Disney movie “Frozen.” — read by 'V' — Sign up for Snoozecast+ to get expanded, ad-free access by going to snoozecast.com/plus! Learn more about your ad choices. In this year's annual Xmas special, I put the Christ back into Christmas by refuting the fringe skeptical view that no such person as Jesus Christ ever existed. This topic forced us to examine what historical sources we can trust, how unreliable and yet how useful the New Testament may be to historians, and how the pagan continuity hypothesis leads to yet more unsupported, extreme conclusions. Join Dr. Oakley & Holly as we tackle the 'Abominable Snowwoman' phenomenon! Yes, ‘tis the season for our vaginas to hibernate, and they might be feeling the winter blues. From cozying up with a humidifier to offering our vaginas a warm mug of hydration, we're diving into hilarious yet helpful tips to thaw out that chilly dryness. Let's navigate the winter wonderland of vaginal care with laughter and warmth! Yes, changes in weather conditions, particularly cold weather, can affect vaginal moisture for some individuals. It's often related to decreased humidity levels indoors during the winter, which can impact the mucous membranes in the body, including the vagina. This might cause dryness, discomfort, or irritation in some women. Using a humidifier indoors, staying hydrated, wearing breathable clothing, and using lubricants if needed can help manage this. It's always a good idea to consult a healthcare professional for personalized advice if someone is experiencing persistent discomfort or dryness. These discussions can be valuable to address any concerns and find the best solutions for individual needs. There are several treatment options for vaginal dryness. Some, such as vaginal moisturizers or lubricants, are available without a prescription. Dr. Oakley will go over those in this episode. Thank you, ladies, for listening. Always feel free to ask Dr. Oakley any women's health questions at any time. Please send in your comments, questions, and suggestions for future topics at TheLadyBodPod@gmail.com.
