EP #326 - Brave Action - An interview with author James Twyman Okay everybody you are in for an incredible experience in this episode of Empowering Chats. I am thrilled and so honored to welcome my guest, author James Twyman. His latest book is called, I Don't Know, Maybe, I Love You. James is not only an author but also an Episcopal Franciscan priest and a lifelong follower of St. Francis. Here is what he has to say about what he wrote, “This book is meant to be a pause button, an opportunity to hold still and look at the big picture, what we really want in our lives and in the world. Taking a collective deep breath may not solve all the complex problems we face, but it might be a first step toward finding a solution to the dark and elusive issues of our era.” James is calling people to step up, become de-polarizing agents and change the world one conversation at a time. He has a Credo he lives by, that goes something like this; “I don't care who you voted for –– come and walk with me. I don't care who you support –– come and serve with me, there is nothing you can say that's going to change the way I feel about you, so come and love with me.” James and I both agree that we can be much more effective when we realize we all come from the same place. A place of love with an understanding that we are all human. The question to ask ourselves, before entering into a divisive conflict or protest is; Are we coming together to be angry and prove our “rightness” or are we coming together peacefully because we want to unite and show we are here to listen and be open to solutions? James emphasizes the need to de-polarize, hence his motivation to start the “De-Polarizing” movement. His goal is to unite and to come back together so we can focus on a higher goal, one that unites rather than separates. This week, we're thrilled to welcome guest comedian Andy Gomez for his very first appearance—so buckle up for laughs, liquids, and bromantic explorations. To match the whimsical vibe of Friendship, we crack open a THC seltzer from Trail Magic—because that's exactly the kind of movie it is. While Texas holds its breath, waiting for the governor to sign off (or veto) on keeping or outlawing these fizzy, buzz-worthy drinks, we're already in toast mode. Next up, it's time for classic buddy-comedy gold with I Love You, Man. To fuel our “I love you, bro” affirmations, we pop open a fresh pour from Equal Parts Brewing—a brew as balanced and dependable as a true friendship. Dr. Andrew Johnstone and Jason Heat from Seemingly Unrelated podcast return to Flixwatcher to review Andrew's choice Ariana Grande: Excuse Me, I Love You. Ariana Grande: Excuse Me, I Love You (2020) is a Netflix documentary that follows the Grammy-winning, multi-platinum singer-songwriter around the globe on her sold out 2019 Sweetener World Tour. To be filed under one for the fans only. There is very little insightful footage to be found here in the 1 hour 37 minutes. It does feature 25 songs performed by Ariana Grande so if that is something you'd like to watch then this is for you. There are music films (Rocketman) and documentaries (Amy) that transcend genres and interest to reach a wide audience, this is not one of them. Unsurprisingly the recommendability scores were very low, there was nothing compelling enough to engage non fans and the overall score is 1.82. 2025 januárban jelent meg Bujdosó János zeneszerző-gitáros kvartetté bővült zenekarának, a Bujdosó Quartet legújabb albuma Hundred Desires címmel, amelyet június 13-án a Gödör klubban, majd a nyár során az ország különböző részein be is mutat a közönség előtt.

This week on West of Knowhere, we delve into a medley of peculiar and unexpected stories. We kick off with the intriguing news of Qatar offering a $400 million airplane to the United States as a potential temporary Air Force One. The episode takes a wild turn as we propose a reality TV concept where contestants vie for U.S. citizenship and discuss the Supreme Court's pushback on the Trump administration's immigration policies. We transition into the digital realm with a discussion on AI and copyright issues, including the unexpected firing of the U.S. Copyright Office Director. Meanwhile, in Argentina, a shocking discovery of 80 boxes of Nazi materials is unearthed in their Supreme Court's basement, leaving us pondering the past. Send us your questions for Fishbowl 6!Here Dr. H sits down with Lisa, a pediatric nurse practitioner, to witness her story of developmental trauma, concomitant chronic depression, and eventually her path of healing and rebuilding trust and connection, largely through psychotherapy. During her years of intermittently crippling and suicidal depression, she was put on various psych meds, which might have helped at the time, but later became shockingly difficult to try to taper and stop. This is a story of overcoming shame, a story that looks at the question of whether people need meds for life….and it turns out, surprise surprise, that what's causing or driving depression actually really matters….and when that's a Mom wound, most psych meds are really just acting as flimsy bandages."I Love You, I Hate You, Are You My Mom?" In this powerful episode of Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, host Sana sits down with Marie Birtel—journalist, lecturer, psychological counselor, and author of I Love You, When. Together, they confront the rarely discussed realities of transgenerational trauma, covert narcissism, and misogyny within families. Marie courageously shares her personal journey of emotional abuse, generational silence, and eventual liberation. This conversation explores how abuse cloaked in societal respectability often goes unnoticed, how family systems condition women to stay small, and what it takes to break free. Marie's story is a mirror for many—revealing that healing is not only possible, but a powerful act of reclamation. About the Guest:Marie Birtel is a French-German journalist, university lecturer, psychological counselor, and author. Her book I Love You, When is a self-help narrative that exposes the hidden layers of family abuse and offers hope to those navigating trauma. Through her writing and counseling work, Marie empowers others to recognize covert narcissism and reclaim their inner truth. Key Takeaways: Covert narcissism often appears under the guise of victimhood, using control and dependency to manipulate. Emotional abuse in families can manifest subtly through guilt, gaslighting, and mood-based punishment. Eating disorders, depression, and relationship struggles can be symptoms of unresolved trauma. Misogyny within families perpetuates generational cycles of silence and shame. Healing begins with awareness, courage to speak out, and often cutting ties with toxic family dynamics.
When children grieve, the adults around them are often grieving, too—but how do we help them process loss when we're struggling ourselves? In this powerful conversation, author Lindsay Bonilla shares the deeply personal story behind her children's book “The Hole,” written to help young readers understand and express grief. With host Gabe Howard, together they explore the challenges of discussing death with kids, why grief shouldn't be “filled in” and forgotten, and how storytelling can create space for healing. Whether you're a parent, caregiver, or someone who has experienced loss, this episode offers heartfelt insights into navigating grief—both for children and yourself. Listen now for a moving discussion on love, loss, and the importance of remembering. “A lot of children have experienced a lot of loss. So, letting kids lead and tell you what they need. Giving them tools, like children's books that address grief. Or if they see something. I mean, gee, there's a lot of, lot of movies. I mean, my son's obsessed with Star Wars. There's a lot of loss in that. And sometimes just taking the time to have the conversation at the level that they're comfortable with and letting them kind of lead the conversation. Rather than just acting like, well, they're fine. You know? [Laughter]” ~Lindsay Bonilla Our guest, Lindsay Bonilla (LindsayBonilla.com), is a professional storyteller and author whose previous picture books include The Storyteller, the Parents' Choice Award winner Polar Bear Island, I Love You with All of My Hearts, and The Note Who Faced the Music. She lives with her husband, two wild and creative kids, and her dog, Blitzen, in North Canton, Ohio. Our host, Gabe Howard, is an award-winning writer and speaker who lives with bipolar disorder. He is the author of the popular book, "Mental Illness is an Asshole and other Observations," available from Amazon; signed copies are also available directly from the author. Gabe is also the host of the "Inside Bipolar" podcast with Dr. Nicole Washington. Gabe makes his home in the suburbs of Columbus, Ohio. Philip Gulley, Peterson, and Sweet Miche share their personal journeys of unlearning traditional theological concepts and reflect on what makes Quakerism a meaningful path to a more authentic faith. Gulley highlights fear as a significant motivator for religious beliefs and a tool for control and how the current political moment is a masterfully evil manipulation of human fears. Gulley also offers his perspective on the continued usefulness of organized religion, emphasizing the importance of bringing people together, respecting personal autonomy, and aligning its social efforts with the ethos of Jesus and radical love. Philip Gulley is a Quaker pastor, writer, and speaker from Danville, Indiana. Gulley has written 22 books, including the Harmony series recounting life in the eccentric Quaker community of Harmony, Indiana, and the best-selling Porch Talk essay series. Gulley's memoir, I Love You, Miss Huddleston: And Other Inappropriate Longings of My Indiana Childhood, was a finalist for the Thurber Prize for American Hor. In addition, Gulley, with co-author James Mulholland, shared their progressive spirituality in the books If Grace Is True and If God Is Love, followed by Gulley's books If the Church Were Christian and The Evolution of Faith. In Living the Quaker Way: Timeless Wisdom For a Better Life Today, Gulley offers the opportunity to participate in a world where the values of the Quaker way bring equity, peace, healing, and hope. In his most recently published non-fiction work, Unlearning God: How Unbelieving Helped Me Believe, Gulley describes the process of spiritual growth, especially the re-interpretation of the earliest principles we learned about God. Resources Here are some resources for friends in the process of unlearning and seeking spiritual growth: Therapy Therapy and spiritual growth can be deeply complementary. While therapy doesn't typically provide spiritual direction, it creates fertile ground for unlearning and spiritual development. You can use online therapist directories to find a therapist by location, insurance, specialty, cost, and more at Psychology Today, TherapyDen, or Open Path Psychotherapy Collective. Poets and Authors Audre Lorde is a profoundly influential Black lesbian feminist writer, poet, theorist, and civil rights activist. Her work powerfully explores the intersections of race, class, gender, sexuality, and ability. You can read her essays in Sister Outsider and her "biomythography" Zami: A New Spelling of My Name. Federico Garcia Lorca is one of Spain's most important poets and playwrights of the 20th century. His work is celebrated for its intense lyricism, surreal imagery, and passionate exploration of themes like love, death, desire, oppression, and Andalusian culture, particularly in works like Gypsy Ballads and plays such as Blood Wedding and The House of Bernarda Alba. Walt Whitman is a central figure in American poetry, often called the "Bard of Democracy." Whitman revolutionized poetry with his use of free verse and expansive lines. His lifelong work, Leaves of Grass, celebrates the individual, democracy, nature, the body, spirituality, and the interconnectedness of all life, aiming to capture the diverse spirit of America. Mary Oliver is an American poet who focuses on the natural world, particularly the landscapes of New England. Her work finds wonder, spirituality, and profound insight in quiet observation and moments of attention to nature, inviting readers to connect more deeply with the world around them. Christian Wiman is a contemporary American poet and essayist known for his unflinching honesty and intellectual rigor in exploring themes of faith, doubt, suffering (often drawing on his own experience with chronic illness), mortality, and love. Joy Harjo is a member of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation and served as the first Native American U.S. Poet Laureate. Her work weaves together Indigenous history, spirituality, myth, social justice, resilience, and a deep connection to the land, often infused with the rhythms of music and prayer. Akwake Emezi is a non-binary Nigerian writer and artist known for their powerful, innovative, and often genre-bending work. Their novels (like Freshwater and The Death of Vivek Oji) explore complex themes of identity, spirituality (often drawing on Igbo cosmology), gender, mental health, trauma, and the body, challenging conventional Western frameworks of selfhood. Elaine Pagels is a renowned historian of religion, particularly noted for her scholarship on early Christianity and Gnosticism. Her groundbreaking book, The Gnostic Gospels, brought non-canonical early Christian texts to wider attention, revealing the diversity of early Christian thought and exploring how political and social contexts shaped religious history and scripture. LGBTQ+ film festivals are events dedicated to showcasing films by, for, or about queer individuals and communities. They serve as vital platforms for representation, providing visibility for filmmakers and stories often marginalized in mainstream media. These festivals (like Frameline, Outfest, NewFest, and countless others globally) are also important spaces for community building and celebrating queer culture. Quaker Voluntary Service is a year-long program rooted in Quaker values. It brings young adults together to live in an intentional community, work full-time in social justice-focused non-profit organizations, and engage in spiritual exploration and leadership development, putting faith into action. Listener Responses We hear directly from Roxanne, who unlearned the idea that any single group holds the definitive spiritual answer, instead discovering valuable truths across diverse practices and traditions through their continuous seeking. On Facebook, friends shared their experience wrestling with the traditional ideas about God they grew up with. Many people mentioned letting go of a harsh or judgmental image of God, questioning core doctrines, and letting go of feelings of unworthiness.
