To mark the recent release of the second Wicked film, for this week's episode we're revisiting my 2020 interview with Dee Michel, author of the book Friends of Dorothy: Why Gay Boys and Gay Men Love the Wizard of Oz. Dee's book is an in-depth examination of queer Oz fandom, which for him has its roots in happy memories of watching the movie with his dad. Dee grew up in the 1950s with the threat of the red scare looming over his family — his parents met at a Communist Party meeting, and there was the constant threat that the family would be exposed. Added to the general chaos of the time was the discovery that his father was gay, and Dee's own struggle to find his place in the world. And before we get to that, a quick heads up that I have a new YouTube video coming this weekend about the powerful gay magic behind The Wizard of Oz and Wicked. In this episode of _Classical Et Cetera_ we explore why these tales endure, what they offer the moral imagination, and how they help both children and adults see the world with clarity and wonder. From questions about when to begin reading fairy tales to the connections they share with Scripture, we discuss why "demythologizing" (whether fairy tale or sacred text) risks losing the very truth they carry. The Department of Justice's declaration that Jeffrey Epstein was a "lone wolf" with no ties to intelligence and no involvement in kompromat is not just laughable—it's an insult to the intelligence of every American with a functioning frontal lobe. This isn't just a lie; it's a grotesque act of gaslighting. You don't amass blackmail material on billionaires, politicians, and royalty by accident. You don't operate an international sex trafficking ring out of mansions, private islands, and government-funded plea deals unless someone very powerful is holding the door open. For the DOJ to issue this absurd narrative in 2025, after years of irrefutable evidence and obvious patterns, is like spitting in the face of every survivor, whistleblower, journalist, and citizen who's been screaming the truth while being told they were delusional. What this memo really signals is institutional rot—an admission, cloaked in denial, that the system doesn't intend to clean up its mess. It's a grotesque pantomime of justice, hoping the public will grow tired, stop asking questions, and let the concrete dry over a grave full of secrets. But this isn't going away. Meanwhile, Sean "Diddy" Combs may have just blown up his own $100 million lawsuit against NBC, thanks to courtroom comments that handed the network's lawyers a gift-wrapped opening. With ironic or nonsensical morals attached to their ends, their tone is more satirical, glib, and tongue-in-cheek than is usual in children's stories; the serialization in newspapers for adult readers was appropriate for the materials.
