One of our favorite movies of 2025 so far is Sarah Friedland's debut feature Familiar Touch, which opens in theaters in New York on Friday, June 20. The film follows an octogenarian with dementia, played by Kathleen Chalfant, as she settles into her new life in a nursing home. It's a delicate, touching, and surprising work that evades clichéd depictions of elderly people—thanks in part to the collaborative process through which it was made. The film was shot in a real care facility in Pasadena, with residents participating in the production process and appearing in the film. Chalfant, a stalwart of the New York stage, anchors the film with a towering performance. On today's episode, Film Comment invited Molly Haskell, herself a stalwart of American film criticism, to interview Chalfant, after learning she was particularly impressed by Chalfant's work in the film. Their fascinating conversation touches upon depictions of aging onscreen, Chalfant's preparation for the role, how the film resists sentimentality, and more.
Most people think aging is about endings. Familiar Touch shows us it's about beginning again. In this episode, filmmaker Sarah Friedland, actress Kathleen Chalfant, executive director Shaun Rushforth, and resident Jean Owen of Villa Gardens, take us behind the scenes of this award-winning film that reimagines aging, dementia, and caregiving through dignity, creativity, and collaboration. A must-listen for family caregivers and senior living advocates. We go behind the scenes of Familiar Touch—filmed at Villa Gardens, a Front Porch Community. What does it mean to open your doors, your story, and your heart to a film crew? How do you protect dignity while embracing creative risk? And what happens when older adults shift from being passive recipients of care to powerful co-creators? We talk about everything: boundaries and trust, storytelling and memory, leadership in senior living, and how art can reimagine what aging and caregiving really look like—rooted in love, dignity, and the belief that every person deserves to be seen and why this film needs to be shared. Familiar Touch gives family caregivers a rare gift: the chance to see their own journey reflected with honesty and grace, reminding them that they are not alone. The small moments of transition. The weight of goodbyes. The quiet strength of starting over. Filmed on location at Villa Gardens in Pasadena with residents as cast and crew, Familiar Touch offers an authentic, collaborative portrayal of aging and caregiving. It premiered at the Venice Film Festival, winning three major awards, and will be released in U.S. theaters on June 20, 2025 by Music Box Films. This week we're excited to present a conversation from this year's edition of New Directors/New Films with Familiar Touch director Sarah Friedland and cast members Kathleen Chalfant, Carolyn Michelle, and H. Jon Benjamin. This conversation was moderated by New Directors/New Films co-chair Dan Sullivan. Presented by The Museum of Modern Art and Film at Lincoln Center, the 54th edition of New Directors/New Films (ND/NF) takes place through April 13, and has, since 1972, showcased new and emerging filmmakers whose distinctive visions and risk-taking works highlight the vitality and potential of cinema. The Opening Night selection of this year's festival, Familiar Touch is about an octogenarian named Ruth (played by Kathleen Chalfant) who has been living independently, but cracks have started to emerge: toast is placed to dry in the dish rack, confusion rests on her face, the dead are spoken of in present tense while the living (such as a son right before her) go entirely unrecognized. Her entrance into an assisted-living facility begins the strange, transcendent journey that is Familiar Touch, Sarah Friedland's feature debut, which earned three awards at the 2024 Venice Film Festival, including the Lion of the Future, Best Director, and Best Actress for Chalfant's astonishing turn. Friedland builds her drama through sharp honesty, and tough as its material may be, few films are so tonally flexible, so able to turn on a dime: stray moments of tenderness, humility, even absurdity poke through, with a love and care for Ruth shown by characters and creators alike. Familiar Touch portends the arrival of major directorial talent and we were honored to have it as the opening night selection of the 54th edition of New Directors/New Films. Familiar Touch will open in select theaters beginning June 20th, courtesy of Music Box Films.

The Friday Newsletter | Daily Gardener Community Historical Events 1756 Birth of the handsome and tall Swedish botanist, Pehr Loefling. Pehr met Carl Linnaeus at the University of Uppsala, where Carl was his professor. Early on, Carl dubbed Pehr his "most beloved pupil," and he started calling Pehr "the Vulture." Carl came up with the moniker after observing that Pehr had an intuitive way of finding plants and observing the most minute details of plant specimens. After graduating, Carl recommended Pehr for an opportunity in Madrid. Pehr landed the position, learned Spanish, and was soon called Pedro by his friends. In short order, Pehr joined a Royal Spanish Expedition to South America. His mission was to find and learn about an improved cinnamon species. Two years into the trip, Pehr was botanizing in Venezuela when he died of malaria on the banks of the Caroní River. He was buried beneath an orange tree. He was 27 years old. By the end of the year, over half of the expedition's men would be dead from disease compounded by hunger and fatigue. When Linnaeus heard the news about Pehr, he wrote to a friend, The great Vulture is dead. 1801 Birth of William Barnes (books about this person), English polymath, writer, and inventor. He wrote over 800 poems and had familiarity with over 70 different languages. The English writers Thomas Hardy and Edmund Gosse visited William on his deathbed. Edmund later wrote that William was dying as picturesquely as he lived... We found him in bed in his study, his face turned to the window, where the light came streaming in through flowering plants, his brown books on all sides of him save one, the wall behind him being hung with old green tapestry. Any gardener who loves their garden has likely thought about the day they'll have to say goodbye. William wrote about that moment in a little poem called To a Garden—On Leaving It. Sweet garden! peaceful spot! no more in thee Shall I ever while away the sunny hour. Farewell each blooming shrub, and lofty tree; Farewell, the mossy path and nodding flower: I shall not hear again from yonder bower The song of birds, or humming of the bee, Nor listen to the waterfall, nor see The clouds float on behind the lofty tower. My eyes no more may see, this peaceful scene. But still, sweet spot, wherever I may be, My love-led soul will wander back to thee. 1870 Birth of Adolph G. Rosengarten, Sr., American businessman. His family pharmaceutical company would become part of Merck in the 1920s. In 1913, Adolph and his wife Christine wanted to escape the heat of Philadelphia and find a place suitable for a country home. They settled on a piece of land in Wayne, Pennsylvania, and commissioned their former friend and classmate Charles Borie to design the house and Landscape architect Thomas Sears to work on the terraces. After 1924, the family lived there year-round. Adolph named the estate Chanticleer as a tongue-in-cheek nod to "Chanticlere" in William Makepeace Thackeray's The Newcomes (1855), wherein the estate was "mortgaged up to the very castle windows." Adolph always said he sympathized with the fictional Chanticlere owner from the novel. The etymology of Chanticleer means rooster, and that's why there are so many rooster motifs at Chanticleer (books about this garden). Today the public garden at Chanticleer is among the best in the United States. The grounds occupy 35 of the 50 acres owned by the foundation. The garden opened to the public in 1993. The job of maintaining and designing Chanticleer now falls to seven full-time horticulturists who strive to preserve and improve a garden that's been called America's most romantic and creative garden. 1939 Birth of Phyllis Theroux (books by this author), American writer and journalist. She grew up in San Francisco following World War II. She once wrote, I think this is what hooks one to gardening: it is the closest one can come to being present at creation. Grow That Garden Library™ Book Recommendation The Flower Hunter by Lucy Hunter This book came out late in 2021, and the subtitle is Seasonal flowers inspired by nature and gathered from the garden. Lucy Hunter is a floral whisperer. She knows how to create beauty - true, artistic, Raphaelian, dreamy, sumptuous beauty. For a first book, Lucy has given gardeners quite a gift. Gardeners love nothing better than chatting with other gardeners and seeing their gardens. How do you do this? Why do you grow that? What do you do with this flower? In The Flower Hunter, Lucy Hunter welcomes us to a year in her North Wales garden. And trust me; you want to see what Lucy is doing with the beauty she finds in her own backyard. Lucy is generous with her step-by-step tutorials. She inspires with her essays on working with natural elements. She's funny, too. And Her photography is top of the top. Even if you feel no match for Lucy's level of mastery, she manages to help connect the reader to the well of creativity, the tiny spark of inspiration that each of us possesses. As gardeners, we see the beauty in the every day. We know how to find peace in nature. Lucy extends that serenity and joy and puts it to work in creating more than just exquisite floral arrangements. She also demonstrates other projects like drying flowers for a fall wreath, making natural dyes (easier than you think), and creating your own journal (more fun than you think!). Lucy Hunter has two decades of floral, photography, and landscape design experience. She is a naturalist at heart. She is an edge-softener, an evocateur, a seasonal transition lover, a rose lover and guru, a believer in potential, and a pathfinder to your own creative voice. You'd better believe that her Instagram is amazing. You can follow her @lucytheflowerhunter. This book is 208 pages of Lucy Hunter doing what Lucy Hunter does best: florals, beauty, softness, nature, and sparks. You can get a copy of The Flower Hunter by Lucy Hunter and support the show using the Amazon link in today's show notes for $25. Botanic Spark 1892 Birth of Edna St. Vincent Millay (books by this author), American lyrical poet and playwright. Gardeners know many of Edna's verses like: April comes like an idiot, babbling and strewing flowers. I would blossom if I were a rose. I will be the gladdest thing under the sun! I will touch a hundred flowers and not pick one. But there's a touching little poem of Edna's that was published posthumously. that I thought I'd end the show with today. It's a lovely spring poem called, If It Should Rain. The American actress Kathleen Chalfant once said that her friend Sloane Shelton would repeat the last three lines before going to sleep at the end of particularly hard days. If it should rain --(the sneezy moon Said: Rain)--then I shall hear it soon From shingles into gutters fall... And know of what concerns me, all: The garden will be wet till noon-- I may not walk-- my temper leans To myths and legends--through the beans Till they are dried-- lest I should spread Diseases they have never had. I hear the rain: it comes down straight. Now I can sleep, I need not wait To close the windows anywhere. Tomorrow, it may be, I might Do things to set the whole world right. There's nothing I can do tonight. Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener And remember: For a happy, healthy life, garden every day.

I visited with American actor Kathleen Chalfant back when we first hunkered down due to COVID19 for our Hunkered Down Podcast. At the time, I expressed my gratitude to Joel Bernstein for inviting Ms. Chalfant to the podcast. A celebrated and honored stage, film and television actor, Ms Chalfont debuted on Broadway in Dance With Me followed by M. Butterfly. She has won numerous awards for her varied, powerful performances – in original Broadway productions. In Wit she played a scholar battling cancer – in Tony Kushner's Angels in America, she played several roles including Hannah Pitt and Ethel Rosenberg.I am not going to get into her extensive film and television work. Finally, in addition to the thrill of meeting this great actress, Kathleen was a fun and generous person to talk with. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

With Old now playing in theaters, I recently landed an extended interview with writer-director M. Night Shyamalan about the making of his latest film and career. During the wide-ranging and very fun conversation, Shyamalan talked about his favorite movies, collecting first edition Hitchcock posters, what he's learned during his career that he wishes he knew early on, why working with lower budgets has been his secret sauce, what happened with his Labor of Love script that was originally going to star Bruce Willis, how The Sixth Sense changed during the writing process, why Spilt has so many deleted scenes, the way he directs on set, meeting with Steven Spielberg to write the fourth Indiana Jones movie, and more. Of course, we also talked about the making of Old, how he charted the age of every actor for every scene, how he came up with the Old ending, and more. If you haven't seen the trailers, Old is about a family on a tropical holiday that discover the secluded beach where they are relaxing for a few hours is somehow causing them to age rapidly. The film was inspired by the French graphic novel Sandcastle by Pierre Oscar Levy and Frederik Peeters. Old stars Gael García Bernal, Vicky Krieps, Alex Wolff, Rufus Sewell, Thomasin McKenzie, Ken Leung, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Abbey Lee, Aaron Pierre, Embeth Davidtz, Eliza Scanlen, Emun Elliott, and Kathleen Chalfant. Alright people, it's that time of the year again, for the debut of another sophomore season of THE hit comedy of 2020, as well as the return of a certain twisty filmmaker, we've got a double batch for you on the #talkintv show here today, we're reviewing the debut of Season 2 of Ted Lasso on Apple TV+, and on the movie side of things, we're reviewing M. Night Shyamalan's brand new movie, Old! Ted Lasso is an American comedy streaming television series developed by Bill Lawrence, Jason Sudeikis, Joe Kelly, and Brendan Hunt, based on a character of the same name whom Sudeikis first portrayed in a series of promos for NBC Sports' coverage of the Premier League. The series premiered with the first three episodes on Apple TV+ on August 14, 2020, and was renewed five days later for a second season of 12 episodes, which premiered on July 23, 2021. In October 2020, the series was renewed for a third season. The series follows titular American Ted Lasso, a coach of college-level American football, who is unexpectedly recruited to coach an English Premier League team, AFC Richmond, despite having no experience in association football. The series also co-stars Brendan Hunt, Hannah Waddingham, Juno Temple, Brett Goldstein, Phil Dunster, Jeremy Swift & Nick Mohammed, and is just as cheery, heartwarming, and unexpectedly emotional as the first time around. Then we have M. Night Shyamalan's Old. Old is a 2021 American science fiction mystery thriller film written, directed, and produced by M. Night Shyamalan, inspired by the Swiss graphic novel "Sandcastle" by Pierre Oscar Levy and Frederik Peeters. The film's ensemble cast includes Gael García Bernal, Vicky Krieps, Eliza Scanlen, Thomasin McKenzie, Alex Wolff, Abbey Lee, Aaron Pierre, Rufus Sewell, Ken Leung, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Embeth Davidtz, Emun Elliott, and Kathleen Chalfant. The film follows a group of people who find themselves aging rapidly on a secluded beach from which they cannot escape. The film was announced in October 2019 after Shyamalan read the graphic novel by Levy and Peeters. The cast joined the following summer, with filming taking place from September to November in the Dominican Republic. It marked the first film of Shyamalan's career to have no shooting take place around his hometown of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Following a delay attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic, Old was theatrically released on July 23, 2021, in the United States, by Universal Pictures, and hoo boi, is this another Shyamalan stinker or is this more of what we're used to? Tune in to find out, it's all covered here on the Talkin' TV Podcast! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/talkintvpodcastgmailcom/support

In this time of sheltering, we think one of the things that’s magical about short stories is that they bring the world to you. On this program, guest host Michael Cerveris presents two stories about the difference between what other people observe about us, and who we actually are. Even though we’re all mostly “home alone” right now, these pieces remind us that when we are out in the world, our inner and outer selves can be very different. Cerveris reads “Riding the Doghouse,” a great coming-of-age story about a young boy and his trucker dad, by Randy DeVita, and the superb Kathleen Chalfant brings to life Carol Shields’ “Mrs. Turner Cutting the Grass.” Mrs. Turner is a suburban widow with sloppy gardening skills—and cellulite—but she has an interesting past.
Michael Neeley is a former professional actor and medieval knight turned writer, motivational speaker, personal development coach, author, and host of the Consciously Speaking podcast. He has appeared in feature films with Mel Gibson and Kevin Costner, performed off-Broadway with Andre Braugher and Kathleen Chalfant, and had recurring roles in several popular soap operas. His studies in character development took place both on and off camera and ultimately fueled his desire to pursue personal development and consciousness training as a profession. Michael is a student of Buddhism and sits on the Board of Directors at Insight Santa Cruz, a Buddhist meditation community. His contemplative practices form a great part of the foundation of his work, where he is a certified Dharma teacher and meditation guide. In this episode Doug and Michael discuss: Moving beyond advertising and sponsorship into monetizing strategies that really accelerate profits and increase influence. Creating a funnel that works with who you are and what you offer to bring in guests that fit into your message and are also good candidates for becoming clients. The win-win strategies off affiliate marketing and joint venture partnerships. Finding the right social media outlets to fit who you are trying to reach. Key Takeaways: If you have a service or product that would be of value to someone, it would be a disservice not to offer it to them. A huge thank you goes out to Joel Bernstein for inviting actress Kathleen Chalfant for this Hunkered Down conversation. Ms Chalfant is a celebrated and honored stage, film and television actor. She debuted on Broadway in Dance With Me followed by M. Butterfly. She has won numerous awards for her varied, powerful performances – in original Broadway productions. In Wit she played a scholar battling cancer – in Tony Kushner’s Angels in America she played several roles including Hannah Pitt and Ethel Rosenberg.I am not going to get into her extensive film and television work. And on top of the thrill of meeting this great actress – Kathleen is a fun and generous person to talk with. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Guest host Jane Curtin presents three quirky stories in which a drop or two is taken: Michael Gerber's and Jonathan Schwarz's "What We Talk About When We Talk About Doughnuts" is a riff on a famous Raymond Carver tale; it's performed by Joey Slotnick. Early New Yorker humorist Corey Ford tells us just what can go wrong at "The Office Party," performed by Jordan Klepper. And wry tale of boozy suburbia, "The Sorrows of Gin," is performed by Kathleen Chalfant.

In this episode of The Plot, I'm joined by playwright and journalist Winter Miller. Miller is a widely produced playwright and has also written extensively for The New York Times. In the mid-2000's she traveled with Nicholas Kristof to the Sudan border, for research on what eventually became her best-known play In Darfur. In Darfur premiered at The Public Theater, followed by a standing room only performance at their 1800-seat Delacorte Theater in Central Park, a first for a play by a woman. She was a founding member of the Obie Award-winning playwriting collective 13P and has taught widely at universities, venues like New York Theatre Workshop and the Sundance Institute, as well as refugee camps in Northern Uganda and Palestine. In 2016, her play Spare Rib was read at an event, presented by Gloria Steinem, Samantha Bee, and others, honoring Christian OBGYN and abortion provider Dr. Willie Porter, and raised $20,000 in one night for southern abortion clinics.Miller's newest play No One is Forgotten is about two women imprisoned under unknown circumstances. It was inspired by the many recent stories of journalists captured abroad and runs Off-Broadway at Rattlestick Playwrights Theater from July 8 to July 27. In this talk, she discusses the current geopolitical climate, what we can do to keep journalists safe, and how she ran a particularly successful Kickstarter campaign to make the play possible. (One tip: it helps to have a very cooperative cat!)If you would you like to help promote a safer world for journalists, consider supporting Amnesty International, Reporters Without Borders, or The Committee to Protect Journalists. “We keep going through the things that hurt us because we fail to let go of the old and make room for new things in our lives.” Michael Neeley, the author of The Art of Forgetting, emphasizes that some of the negative patterns in our lives are from actions that we take subconsciously, without much thought going into the process. Let Go…or Be Dragged: Writing to Heal From Trauma From his pharmaceutical background, Michael Neeley came across the concept of a blind study and this helped him understand how a person’s beliefs and expectations can influence the actions of others. Constantly repeating a concept to yourself can make it your reality and it’s therefore important to let go of the wrong preconceptions thus giving yourself and others a chance to have a new start. We tend to create negative patterns in our lives because we wish to prove to ourselves that we were right and the outcome can be different. By accepting that we are the common denominator in our experiences, we are able to actively participate in changing the course of our lives. The suntan effect is seen in our lives when we get new information on how to improve our lives and for a few days or weeks it excites us but soon it no longer holds a significant meaning to us. Only by ensuring we let go of our past totally can we then be able to use the new information to help ourselves recover from the trauma in our lives. Let go of the preconceptions you have about others and about yourself so that you can get a new start. Disengage from operating on autopilot and take control of your life by paying attention to all the actions you take (mindfulness). By clearing out the old beliefs and influences in your life, you will make room for new and positive information that will help transform your life. The poet Anne Sexton took her own life in 1974, but had she lived, this year would have marked her 83rd birthday. Reason enough, thought the actor Paul Hecht, to organize an elegant tribute to her at the Cornelia Street Café on Nov. 14. Two strong women — Kathleen Chalfant and Jennifer Van Dyck — took turns mapping Sexton’s somewhat fragile life through the ley lines of her verse. Even without knowing how it ended, it was possible to glimpse a conflicted mind through the shifting surfaces of her words. Pianist Liz Magnes provided deft transitions between sections of the program, which followed a loose arc from childhood to maturity. Cornelia Street Café co-owner and host Robin Hirsch provided the introduction. Bon Mots: Verses from "Rowing": Then there was life with its cruel houses and people who seldom touched — though touch is all — Verse from "A Story for Rose": Someday, I promised her, I'll be someone going somewhere. Verses from "The Ambition Bird": The business of words keeps me awake.I am drinking cocoa, that warm brown mama. Verses from "The Black Art": A woman who writes feels too much, those trances and portents! As if cycles and children and islandsweren't enough; as if mourners and gossipsand vegetables were never enough.
