Master blender and co-owner of Mombacho Cigars, Claudio Sgroi paid us a visit at Cigar Snob HQ. Erik surprised Claudio with a special cigar that he'd been aging for 5 years. Claudio shared his inspiring and serendipitous story of how he went from never smoking cigars, to falling head over heels, to eventually being offered his dream job of master blender.
The full meeting, held via Zoom with Claudio Sgroi and a number of Cigar Sense members, lasted 3 hours and 20 minutes. We kept what was most relevant for our audio audience. We talked about: - how you get from the tobacco compounds to the aromas, the 5 basic tastes and the tactile perceptions - how memory and other factors influence our cigar experience - cigar education and the need for a common lexicon to be adopted more widely - art in the master blender work, and the importance of how smokers perceive the cigar and a lot more. — This podcast is brought to you by Cigar Sense founders and paid members. This week, #ELOsoFumarTakes welcomes Claudio Sgroi of Mombacho Cigars to sit down for #Take110. Sgroi and Mombacho have taken on some incredible projects in the last couple of years. They first gave us the revolutionary Casa Favilli - featuring a Nicaraguan-grown Connecticut Broadleaf. At the 2019 PCA (nee IPCPR) Trade Show, Sgroi announced the unprecedented collaboration with Diplomatico Rum, the infamous Venezuelan Spirit Company. We also look back at some of the decisions that put Sgroi and Mombacho on this course of creativity, innovation, while still holding true to tradition. Claudio Sgroi is master blender and president at Mombacho Cigars. Together with Claudio, we reviewed the key processes of the premium cigar production to identify critical risks of defects which, when it comes to enjoying our cigars, translate into loss in flavor or off-flavors. Off-flavors, differently from those flavors that we simply do not like, are those perceptions that are connected to undesirable compounds, substances that end up in the tobacco or in our cigar, but are not meant to. Mombacho Cigars is one of the few Nicaraguan cigar manufacturers with a destination factory that's not located in Estelí. The historic building the company calls him is in Granada, Nicaragua, where tons of tourists happen upon Mombacho's story and subsequently (at least we all hope) fall in love with the craft of cigar making. The company's not just a tourist destination, though. They're making serious cigars, including the Mombacho Liga Maestro, which Cigar Snob called the No. 12 cigar of 2018. Mombacho master blender Claudio Sgroi dropped by our office with cigars and doughnuts for a chat. This week, Mo Maali of Patina Cigars joins us for our 42nd Take. It's Southside of Chicago vs. Beantown. And we talk, of course, cigars. Patina Cigars are manufactured at the home of Mombacho Cigars - Casa Favilli in Granada, Nicaragua. Master Blender, Claudio Sgroi was "honored" to team up with Maali on this project and has created some traditional cigars in outward appearance only. Patina in quite unordinary and we dive into that with Maali and learn about his journey as well. Enjoy!
This week we're joined by Claudio Sgroi from Mombacho Cigars! Claudio talks about the Puro Sabor festival, Mombacho Cigars, the Mombacho Experience, what's coming for IPCPR 2017, and some new projects they've been working on.
