Full Text of ReadingsTuesday of Fifth Week of Easter Lectionary: 286The Saint of the day is Saint John of AvilaSaint John of Avila's Story Born in the Castile region of Spain, John was sent at the age of 14 to the University of Salamanca to study law. He later moved to Alcala, where he studied philosophy and theology before his ordination as a diocesan priest. After John's parents died and left him as their sole heir to a considerable fortune, he distributed his money to the poor. In 1527, he traveled to Seville, hoping to become a missionary in Mexico. The archbishop of that city persuaded him to stay and spread the faith in Andalusia. During nine years of work there, he developed a reputation as an engaging preacher, a perceptive spiritual director, and a wise confessor. Because John was not afraid to denounce vice in high places, he was investigated by the Inquisition but was cleared in 1533. He later worked in Cordoba and then in Granada, where he organized the University of Baeza, the first of several colleges run by diocesan priests who dedicated themselves to teaching and giving spiritual direction to young people. He was friends with Saints Francis Borgia, Ignatius of Loyola, John of God, John of the Cross, Peter of Alcantara, and Teresa of Avila. John of Avila worked closely with members of the Society of Jesus and helped their growth within Spain and its colonies. John's mystical writings have been translated into several languages. He was beatified in 1894, canonized in 1970, and declared a doctor of the Church on October 7, 2012. St. John of Avila’s liturgical feast is celebrated on May 10. Reflection Saint John of Avila knew that the lives of Christians can contradict the Good News of Jesus Christ—for example thinking racism is OK—implicitly encouraging Christians to live their faith-halfheartedly, and causing obstacles to non-Christians who might accept Baptism. In 16th-century Spain, those who advocated reforming the Church were often suspected of heresy. Saint John of Avila held his ground and was eventually recognized as a very reliable teacher of the Christian faith. John of Avila is the Patron Saint of: Andalusia, Spain Click here for more on Saint John of Avila! Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media

May 10: Saint John of Ávila, Priest and Doctor 1499-1569 Optional Memorial: Liturgical Color: White Patron Saint of Andalusia Spain and Spanish clergyHis humble epitaph reads “I was a sower”Some of the most passionate and daring missionaries stayed close to home. They never sailed the high seas or crossed a snow-capped mountain. Today's saint was one of them. He was an only child, and after his parents died, Fr. John sold his family property, travelled to Seville, cut all ties, and prepared to sail to New Spain (Mexico), one more wave in that surging missionary tide which crashed on Mexico's shores throughout the 1500s. But it was not to be. St. John of Ávila never walked up the ship's plank. He never crossed the ocean. While waiting for his ship in Seville, his skills as a preacher and catechist, and his obvious holiness, were noticed by the local bishop, who convinced him to preach, teach, and evangelize in Andalusia, in Spain's rugged south.Saint John then spent himself crisscrossing a region that had only recently been conquered by the Spanish crown, and so was still populated by Spanish Muslims and Jews whose conversions to Catholicism were often more matters of expedience than religious conviction. In this newly opened mission field, our saint's broad, humanistic education perfectly matched the pastoral need. Father John harmonized orthodox theology, renaissance humanism, rigorous morality, and an insightful spirituality into a powerful synthesis which, when conveyed through his compelling preaching, moved his congregations to their very cores. As John migrated through the great cities of southern Spain - Seville, Córdoba, Granada – large numbers of the faithful followed him everywhere, eager to absorb every word that flowed from his mouth or pen.People of every class, educational level, and depth of religious commitment found St. John fascinating. In his own lifetime he came to be known as “Master Ávila” for his dominance of the sacred sciences and his vigorous pastoral efforts. He converted, or led to deeper conversion, Saint John of God, founder of the Hospitaller Order, and Saint Francis Borgia, a future Master General of the Jesuits. He was a friend of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Jesuits, and advised Saint Teresa of Ávila, foundress of the Discalced Carmelites. Despite these, and many other, personal connections to famous religious orders and their founders, St. John always remained a diocesan priest, not a religious order priest, something unusual for a priest of his era with such wide influence.Saint John's erudition and solid virtues were further buttressed by his life of abject poverty and physical suffering. He was also part of that loud, pan-European cry for church reform that preceded the Council of Trent by decades. Saint John established several seminaries and colleges, provided spiritual direction to multitudes of laity, religious and seminarians, wrote a long spiritual treatise called Audi filia (“Listen daughter”) and was invited by a bishop to attend the Council of Trent as his theological adviser, though illness prevented Saint John from making the journey.John was declared Venerable in 1759, Blessed in 1893, and Saint in 1970. Proving that saints are always contemporary, he was declared a doctor of the Church by Pope Benedict XVI in 2012 after a petition from the Spanish episcopacy for such an honor was duly studied and approved by the Vatican. The Papal Bull declaring him a Doctor of the Church states: “The teaching of John of Ávila is outstanding for its quality and precision, and its breadth and depth, which were the fruit of methodical study and contemplation together with a profound experience of supernatural realities.”In his last few years, Saint John suffered acute physical pain and was largely confined to his humble home. Confinement allowed him to finally perfect his theological and spiritual writings and to correspond with those seeking his wise counsel. The esteemed Master Ávila, a true Man of La Mancha, died clutching a crucifix, surrounded by many disciples, on May 10, 1569.Saint John of Ávila, your refined education, broad mind, and ardent love of God and Mary showed itself in all you did and said. May our lives likewise reflect our deepest Christian beliefs, inspiring our friends and families to live saintly perfection.

Jesus Salvador remembers an area above the city of Granada, in southern Spain, where there used to be a canal flowing with water and a waterfall.“If the winter was cold, the waterfall would freeze,” he said. “In warmer weather, a mist came off this canal and these hillsides were covered with green moss.”And below, at the end, he said, there was a great place to swim — known as the “Pool of the Moors.” Archaeologists and hundreds of volunteers spent months cleaning out and sometimes entirely redigging the acequia de Aynadamar, just above Granada, Spain. It had been abandoned for nearly half a century. Credit: Gerry Hadden/The World The Moors ruled the area for 800 years and built the now-abandoned canal, or acequia as they're called in Spanish. All told, the canals form a complex network some 1,800 miles long, snaking down from the snowy Sierra Nevada mountains to the plains. The Moors were master water engineers. But today, much of their knowledge — and the network of waterways they built throughout the region — have been lost. Now, amid drought and water shortages, archaeologists are trying to recover them.Archaeologist Elena Correa from the University of Granada and her team, along with hundreds of volunteers, spent the last year restoring and cleaning this acequia. Its historical importance is unmatched, she said, as it once provided all the drinking water to the seat of Moorish power in Granada: the Albaicín.The Albaicín is a hillside maze of cobbled lanes and whitewashed homes, a mix of Moorish and Spanish architecture, with the Alhambra fortress looming just in front. It's a huge tourist draw. Elena Correa, an archaeologist at the University of Granada, inspects part of the acequia de Aynamadar before its reopening.  Credit: Gerry Hadden/The World These days, the water that trickles from the Albaicin's many fountains is pumped in by modern machinery. But a millennium ago, residents relied only on gravity.Originally, Granada's water all came cascading down from a natural spring some 10 miles into the mountains. It's called the Well of Tears, named after the tear-drop shape its creators gave it.Correa and her team hiked up the canal and opened the sluice. The water began as a gush, but soon it was a trickle. Some half a mile from the city, it disappeared altogether, absorbed into the dirt canal. It's supposed to reach the University of Granada, to be used for watering the grounds. But this is just the start, Correa said. Newly released water from the acequia de Aynadamar, which once fed the ancient Moorish quarter of Granada, Spain, called the Albaicín, soaks into the earth a mile short of its destination. Because water levels are low due to drought.  Credit: Gerry Hadden/The World “We inherited this from the Arab farmers,” said Luis Miguel Ortega, head of the region's irrigation authority. “The know-how most likely came from ancient Persia, Syria and Jordan.”The Well of Tears is still in use, providing water to a couple of close-by hamlets. Its water is crystal clear, if low due to a lack of rainfall. The Well of Tears, some 10 miles up the mountain from Granada, Spain, is the source of water for the newly restored canal.  Credit: Gerry Hadden/The World Ortega explained what he calls the real genius behind the acequias. Further up in the Sierra Nevada mountains, he said, there are canals that are not for watering crops directly. They run horizontally along the range until all of their water just seeps away into the earth.“It might seem wasted, but the water is filtering down the mountainside. That's why far below the canals, you find fruit trees and crops that normally wouldn't flourish at such high and dry altitudes,” he said.To reach the highest of these canals, you drive a dirt switchback a couple of hours to about 7,000 feet above sea level. Here, above the treeline, runs the Acequia de Los Hechos. It's about 3 miles long and is meant to feed aquifers below. The Well of Tears, some 10 miles up the mountain from Granada, Spain, is the source of water for the newly restored acequia. Credit: Gerry Hadden/The World Farmer Alejandro Molina tends to his potatoes and chestnut trees on his ranch here.“The canal here provides water to all the farms you see below,” Molin said. “If you were to cut off the acequia, this place would become a desert.”

An tseachtain seo, thug Uachtarán na Stát Aontaithe Joe Biden cuairt ar Éirinn. Ba é an ceathrú Uachtarán ó na Stáit Aontaithe a tháinig go dtí an t-oileán. Chuaigh sé go Béal Feirste ar dtús chun ceiliúradh a dhéanamh ar Chomhaontú Aoine an Chéasta. Chuaigh sé ar aghaidh go Cairlinn i gContae Lú, an áit a rugadh a sin-sin-seanathair Owen Finnegan, a chuaigh go dtí na Stáit Aontaithe san 1840í. Tá gaolta le Biden fós ina gcónaí ann. Chaith sé am ag siúl timpeall Dhún Dealgan agus dúirt sé gur mór an onóir é teacht ar ais go hÉirinn agus gur bhraith sé go raibh sé ar ais ag baile. Thug sé cuairt ar Uachtarán na hÉireann Micheál D. Ó hUigínn in Áras an Uachtaráin agus bhuail sé leis an Taoiseach Leo Varadkar ag Teach Farmleigh i bPáirc an Fhionnuisce. Labhair sé os comhar na bpolaiteoirí ó Dháil Éireann agus ón Seanad, agus é ag moladh an naisc leanúnaigh idir Éire agus na Stáit Aontaithe. Chríochnaigh sé an tráthnóna le fáilte oifigiúil i gCaisleán Bhaile Átha Cliath. Chaith sé an lá deireanach i gContae Mhaigh Eo. Thug sé cuairt ar Chnoc Mhuire agus ar Bhéal an Átha, an áit a rugadh a sin-sin-sin-seanathair Edward Blewitt, a chuaigh go Meiriceá le linn an Ghorta Mhóir. Bhí ceolchoirm ar siúl sa bhaile leis na Coronas, The Academic agus na Chieftains ag seinm. Tháinig na mílte daoine go dtí an baile chun fáilte a chur roimhe. Labhair sé faoin nasc atá aige leis an gceantar agus lena mhuintir i mBéal an Átha i gcaitheamh na mblianta, gur chuir sé sin go mór leis an lá tábhachtach pearsanta a bhí aige in éineacht leis a chlann féin ar an turas seo.   Sa Fhrainc, tá an Chomhairle Bhunreachtúil tar éis cead a thabhairt don Uachtarán Emmanuel Macron chun an pinsin a athchóiriú le go mbeidh ar dhaoine dul ar scor ag ceithre bliana is seasca d'aois. Bhí agóid i gcoinne an athchóirithe ar siúl i bPáras agus i mbailte eile timpeall na tíre. Tá daoine ar buile leis an Uachtarán as an tslí a chuir sé an t-athchóiriú tríd ag baint úsáid as Airteagal 49.3 de Bhunreacht na Fraince gur féidir an rialtas dlí a thabhairt isteach gan vóta ó pholaiteoirí. April 4: Saint Isidore, Bishop and Doctor c. 560–636 Optional Memorial; Liturgical Color: White Patron Saint of the internet There was little he did not know The vast colonial ambitions of Spain in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries went hand in hand with equally epic Catholic missionary efforts. This unity of purpose, these shared goals, with civil and ecclesiastical resources and powers working in concert, was the natural consequence of a country with a total unity of identity. Today's saint was a singularly important, if remote, source for that powerful concurrence of Iberian theology, culture, art, and language which, after centuries of gestation, became the Spanish juggernaut that conquered and evangelized a hemisphere in the 1500s. As a youth, Isidore received an excellent classical education in the Roman tradition, similar to the classical learning Saint Augustine imbibed two centuries before him and utilized to such great effect. Yet Isidore not only learned a great deal, he also remembered it and was uncommonly dedicated to his intellectual pursuits, writing numerous weighty tomes. The breadth and depth of his learning were without equal in his time. It was simply said that Isidore, Archbishop of Seville, knew everything. He is considered by many to be the last of the Latin Fathers of the Church, those early Christian theologians whose writings are the gold standard for all subsequent theologians. His knowledge was put to good use. As the Roman world, which had dominated Spain for so many centuries, slowly crumbled away in the fifth and sixth centuries, Visigothic (Western Goths) tribes overran Spain. Like their Gothic cousins in Central Europe, the Visigoths were Arians, and Arians were heretics. They denied that Christ was consubstantial with the Father and accepted all that flowed from that erroneous starting point. Saint Isidore played an important role in the assimilation of the Visigoths to Nicene Catholicism after one of their Kings abandoned Arianism. Theological unity having been achieved, the old Roman culture of Iberia slowly blended with Visigothic culture to form something new—Spain. Saint Isidore was, then, a nation builder, because he was first a Church builder. And he built the Church not just through his massive erudition but also through effective headship in calling and guiding Church synods, by establishing liturgical unity through the Mozarabic Rite, and by encouraging scholarship and learning through the Cathedral schools he mandated in every diocese. Saint Isidore's most enduring work is his Etymologies (or Origins), an enormous compendium of universal knowledge. It was the standard encyclopedia in Medieval libraries and continued to be utilized as late as the Renaissance. No author's manuscripts were more widely copied in the Middle Ages than Isidore's. Although Saint Isidore was not a creative thinker in the same class as Saint Augustine or the Eastern Fathers of the Church, his mind was such a vast storehouse of knowledge that Pope Saint John Paul II named him the Patron Saint of the Internet. After a long reign as Archbishop of Seville, in his last days Saint Isidore prepared for death by wearing sackcloth and ashes, confessing his faults to his people in church, and asking their forgiveness. He died in his late seventies in 636, just four years after Mohammed, the founder of Islam, died in Saudi Arabia. About seventy-five years after their deaths, Muslim armies crossed the strait of Gibraltar from North Africa and began the long conquest which obliterated the Visigoths. The Spanish reconquest of their nation would take centuries until, in 1492, the last Muslim stronghold, Granada, fell. Both sides were inspired by faith more than patriotism. Both sides fought. Both sides thought they were right. In the end, the nation Isidore created was the stronger and drove Mohammed's heirs back over the waters to Africa. Isidore's enormous legacy was a Catholic nation, and it prevailed. Saint Isidore, you used your education and knowledge to great effect to evangelize a people. Help all who seek your intercession to unite their learning with zeal for the good of the Church and the many peoples it serves.

Full Text of ReadingsThursday of the Fourth Week of Lent Lectionary: 247The Saint of the day is Saint Turibius of MogrovejoSaint Turibius of Mogrovejo's Story Together with Rose of Lima, Turibius is the first known saint of the New World, serving the Lord in Peru, South America, for 26 years. Born in Spain and educated for the law, he became so brilliant a scholar that he was made professor of law at the University of Salamanca and eventually became chief judge of the Inquisition at Granada. He succeeded too well. But he was not sharp enough a lawyer to prevent a surprising sequence of events. When the archdiocese of Lima in Peru required a new leader, Turibius was chosen to fill the post: He was the one person with the strength of character and holiness of spirit to heal the scandals that had infected that area. He cited all the canons that forbade giving laymen ecclesiastical dignities, but he was overruled. Turibius was ordained priest and bishop and sent to Peru, where he found colonialism at its worst. The Spanish conquerors were guilty of every sort of oppression of the native population. Abuses among the clergy were flagrant, and he devoted his energies and suffering to this area first. He began the long and arduous visitation of an immense archdiocese, studying the language, staying two or three days in each place, often with neither bed nor food. Turibius confessed every morning to his chaplain, and celebrated Mass with intense fervor. Among those to whom he gave the Sacrament of Confirmation was the future Saint Rose of Lima, and possibly the future Saint Martin de Porres. After 1590, he had the help of another great missionary, Francis Solanus, now also a saint. Though very poor his people were sensitive, dreading to accept public charity from others. Turibius solved the problem by helping them anonymously. Reflection The Lord indeed writes straight with crooked lines. Against his will, and from the unlikely springboard of an Inquisition tribunal, this man became the Christlike shepherd of a poor and oppressed people. God gave him the gift of loving others as they needed it. Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media
