This is Garrison Hardie with your CrossPolitic Daily News Brief for Tuesday, May 9th, 2023. Samaritan Ministries: Don’t be limited by restrictive networks. There’s another way. A Biblical way. Samaritan Ministries. Say you have a medical need. You don’t have to check and see what hospital is in your network, or be concerned about the doctor being in-network, too. No. You go to the hospital you choose, and don’t give a second thought as to what’s in-network and what’s not, because with Samaritan Ministries, you’re in control of your health care. Afterwards, fellow members pray for you, and send money directly to you to help you pay your medical bills. And when they have a medical need, you’ll do the same for them. That’s what Biblical health care sharing looks like. Check it out today at samaritan ministries dot org slash cross politic First, we start with the news of a coronation for our friends across the pond. https://www.cnn.com/2023/05/06/europe/coronation-king-charles-ckc-gbr-intl/index.html King Charles III is crowned in once-in-a-generation ceremony Britain’s King Charles III has been crowned in a once-in-a-generation royal event witnessed by hundreds of high-profile guests inside Westminster Abbey, as well as tens of thousands of well-wishers who gathered in central London despite the rain. While Charles became King on the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II last September, the coronation on Saturday was the formal crowning of the monarch. The service was a profoundly religious affair, reflecting the fact that aside from being head of state of the United Kingdom and 14 other countries, Charles is also the Supreme Governor of the Church of England. In the most significant moment of the day, Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby placed the 360-year-old St. Edward’s Crown on Charles’ head. The spiritual leader of the Anglican Church then declared: “God Save the King.” The intricate service lasted just over two hours – about an hour shorter than Elizabeth II’s coronation in 1953 – and followed a traditional template that has stayed much the same for more than 1,000 years. However, it has been modernized in certain key ways. The archbishop acknowledged the multiple faiths observed in the UK during the ceremony, saying the Church of England “will seek to foster an environment in which people of all faiths may live freely.” The King took the Coronation Oath and became the first monarch to pray aloud at his coronation. In his prayer he asked to “be a blessing” to people “of every faith and conviction.” In what is considered the most sacred part of the ceremony, the King was anointed with holy oil by the Archbishop of Canterbury. He was also presented with the coronation regalia, including the royal Robe and Stole, in what is known as the investiture part of the service. Then, for the first time in coronation history, the archbishop invited the British public, as well as those from “other Realms,” to recite a pledge of allegiance to the newly crowned monarch and his “heirs and successors.” Ahead of the event, some parts of the British media and public interpreted the invitation as a command, reporting that people had been “asked” and “called” to swear allegiance to the King. In the face of such criticism, the Church of England revised the text of the liturgy so that members of the public would be given a choice between saying simply “God save King Charles” or reciting the full pledge of allegiance. The ceremony also included a reading from the Bible by UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and, in another coronation first, gospel music. Once the King was crowned, his wife, Queen Camilla, was crowned in her own, shorter ceremony with Queen Mary’s Crown – marking the first time in recent history that a new crown wasn’t made specifically for this occasion. After the ceremony, the newly crowned King and Queen rode back to Buckingham Palace in a much larger parade, featuring 4,000 members of the armed forces, 250 horses and 19 military bands. The pomp and pageantry concluded with a royal salute and the customary balcony appearance by the King and family members. They and the crowds below watched a flypast of military aircraft, slimmed down because of the poor weather. Despite the splendor of the occasion, it has not been without controversy. Some have objected to millions of pounds of taxpayers’ money being spent on a lavish ceremony at a time when millions of Britons are suffering a severe cost-of-living crisis. Security is by far the most costly element of large events and the Met said ahead of time that Saturday would be the largest one-day policing operation in decades, with more than 11,500 officers on duty in London. The coronation has also attracted anti-monarchy demonstrations, with a small number of protesters arrested in central London on Saturday morning before the event began. Republic, a campaign group that calls for the abolition of the monarchy, said the idea of the “homage of the people” was “offensive, tone deaf and a gesture that holds the people in contempt.” Some eyebrows were also raised earlier this week when a controversial and widely criticized UK public order bill came into force. Since the death of Queen Elizabeth II last year, there have been a number of instances of anti-monarchists turning up at royal engagements to voice their grievances against the institution. The new rules, signed into law by the King on Tuesday, just days before the coronation, empower the police to take stronger action against peaceful protesters. https://thepostmillennial.com/biden-to-veto-house-remain-in-mexico-bill?utm_campaign=64487 Biden to veto House 'remain in Mexico' bill On Monday, the White House announced that Joe Biden would veto an immigration bill coming out of the House of Representatives that would reinstitute several Trump-era policies including construction of the border wall and the remain in Mexico policy, which stated that anyone seeking asylum had to wait in Mexico as their claim was processed. According to the Associated Press, the White House Office of Management and Budget said in a statement, "While we welcome Congress' engagement on meaningful steps to address immigration and the challenges at the border, this bill would make things worse, not better. Because this bill does very little to actually increase border security while doing a great deal to trample on the nation’s core values and international obligations, it should be rejected." On Thursday, the House is set to vote on the 213-page Secure the Border Act. Thursday also marks the expiration of Title 42, the Trump-era policy instituted under Covid that granted Border Patrol and Department of Homeland Security officials the ability to expel illegal immigrants over health concerns. The Secure the Border Act would also require employers to verify a worker's immigration status for employment and institute the E-Verify system House Majority Leader Steve Scalise said, "Joe Biden sent a message that America’s border is open, and millions of people answered that call and started coming across our border illegally. We’re going to show the president how to solve the problem." The Daily Mail reports, the Secure the Border Act would limit federal funds for NGOs (non-governmental organizations) that aid illegal immigrants crossing the border, would end Biden's expedited entry policy for Nicaraguans, Venezuelans, Haitians, and Cubans, and grant more money for hiring additional border agents. Joe Biden loosened restrictions along the southern border after he took office and HHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas made the announcement that migrants seeking asylum would be permitted entry into the US as would unaccompanied minors. US Border Patrol Chief Raul Ortiz said that over the weekend 26,382 apprehensions were made by border patrol and that 11 pounds of fentanyl and 83 pounds of meth were seized. Mexican cartels have exploited Biden's border crisis, with 2,378,944 illegal immigrant encounters reported in the 2022 fiscal year and 1,659,206 reported in FY 2021, by trafficking humans and drugs, especially fentanyl across the border in record numbers. https://www.dailywire.com/news/airlines-may-soon-be-on-the-hook-for-delayed-and-canceled-flights-transportation-dept-says Airlines May Soon Be On The Hook For Delayed And Canceled Flights, Transportation Dept Says Transportation Secretary Pete Boo-tuh-jeg announced on Monday that the agency introduced rules requiring airlines to reimburse customers who incur expenses due to certain delayed and canceled flights, a move which comes as the industry faces elevated demand and a constrained labor force. The proposed rules, which would apply when an airline delays a flight for more than three hours or cancels a flight for a “controllable” reason, would mandate that the firms offer compensation for stranded passengers, as well as a meal or meal voucher, overnight accommodations, and ground transportation between the airport and hotel. “When an airline causes a flight cancellation or delay, passengers should not foot the bill,” Buttigieg said in a statement, noting that the proposed reimbursement rules would be the first in American history. The move comes after Southwest Airlines experienced holiday travel disruptions last year due to extreme winter weather conditions, staff shortages, and an outdated computer system. The carrier canceled thousands of flights days after other carriers had resumed normal operations. Buttigieg told the company, which has since promised to compensate passengers for all expenses incurred during that time, that the disruptions were “unacceptable” and promised that his agency would exercise “the fullest extent of its investigative and enforcement powers” to ensure customers are reimbursed. The new proposals also occur as the sector faces a severely limited pool of available pilots and frontline staff. Carriers previously encouraged commercial pilots to retire as worldwide lockdowns caused demand for air travel to plummet in the spring of 2020, worsening a previous trend toward a lack of available pilots. Elevated prices for airline tickets and a rapid return in travel demand, however, are now prompting lawmakers to consider the problem. Regional Airline Association CEO Faye Malarkey Black told members of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee last month that more than 50% of current pilots would be forced to retire within the next 15 years because of federal rules mandating that pilots exit their positions once they reach 65 years of age, even as only 8% of pilots are below 30 years of age due to the high cost of flight education. Buttigieg has opposed legislation that would increase the retirement threshold to 67 years of age, contending that “the answer is to make sure we have as many and as good pilots ready to take their place, to have a stronger pipeline.” https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/fecal-transplant-pill-fda-approval-rcna81779 FDA approves first pill for fecal transplants, made from healthy bacteria in human waste U.S. health officials on Wednesday approved the first pill made from healthy bacteria found in human waste to fight dangerous gut infections — an easier way of performing so-called fecal transplants. The new treatment from Seres Therapeutics provides a simpler, rigorously tested version of stool-based procedures that some medical specialists have used for more than a decade to help patients. The Food and Drug Administration cleared the capsules for adults 18 and older who face risks from repeat infections with Clostridium difficile, a bacteria that can cause severe nausea, cramping and diarrhea. diff is particularly dangerous when it reoccurs, leading to between 15,000 and 30,000 deaths per year. It can be killed with antibiotics but they also destroy good bacteria that live in the gut, leaving it more susceptible to future infections. The new capsules are approved for patients who have already received antibiotic treatment. More than 10 years ago, some doctors began reporting success with fecal transplants — using stool from a healthy donor — to restore the gut’s healthy balance and prevent reinfections. The FDA approved the first pharmaceutical-grade version of the treatment last year from a rival drugmaker, Ferring Pharmaceuticals. But that company’s product — like most of the original procedures — must be delivered via the rectum. Cambridge, Mass.-based Seres will market its drug as a less invasive option. The treatment will be sold under the brand name Vowst and comes as a regimen of four daily capsules taken for three consecutive days. Both of the recent FDA approvals are the product of years of pharmaceutical industry research into the microbiome, the community of bacteria, viruses and fungi that live in the gut. Currently most fecal transplants are provided by a network of stool banks that have popped up at medical institutions and hospitals across the country. While the availability of new FDA-approved options is expected to decrease demand for donations from stool banks, some plan to stay open. The FDA warned in its approval announcement that the drug “may carry a risk of transmitting infectious agents. It is also possible for Vowst to contain food allergens,” the agency noted. The FDA approved the treatment based on a 180-patient study in which nearly 88% of patients taking the capsules did not experience reinfection after 8 weeks, compared with 60% of those who received dummy pills.

For years, Nicaraguan dictator Daniel Ortega has abused opponents almost entirely free from the world's attention. But in 2018, democracy advocate, Félix Maradiaga, took the country's future into his own hands, exposing Ortega's rampant crimes. In this episode, recorded at the 2019 Oslo Freedom Forum, Maradiaga discusses how he rallied the world to pay attention. In 2021, Maradiaga was arrested and held in solitary confinement. In February 2023, he and 221 other prisoners of conscience were released and sent to the United States.

What does one do when faced with the worst kind of choices? Alvaro Rivas literally found himself with a gun to his head, when the Nicaraguan government claimed he was a spy because of his work with American ministries. He knew that he risked imprisonment or death if he remained in his native country; the only option was to flee to freedom. The problem? His wife and children could not join him in the arduous journey. They would have to come later, when Alvaro could secure them safer passage. In the meantime, he would cross forests, rivers, and endure internment in a detention facility, encountering the worst of humanity along the way. Safer in a free country, Alvaro holds onto faith that his family will ultimately join him, all the while building a life of legacy and service in his newly adopted country.

We start this off with some somber news coming out of Alabama. https://www.foxnews.com/us/two-teens-charged-dadeville-alabama-mass-shooting-sweet-16-birthday-party Two teens charged in Dadeville, Alabama, mass shooting at Sweet 16 birthday party Alabama authorities announced Wednesday that two teenagers have been arrested and charged in the Dadeville mass shooting at a Sweet 16 birthday party last weekend. Four people were killed, and another 32 people were injured when gunfire erupted at approximately 10:34 p.m. Saturday at the Mahogany Masterpiece dance studio, located in the 200 Block of Broadnax Street in Dadeville, a sleepy town of just 3,200 people in Tallapoosa County, about 62 miles northeast of the state capital of Montgomery. Days later, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency announced Ty Reik McCullough, 17, and Travis McCullough, 16, were both formally charged with four counts of reckless murder. The teens from Tuskegee were arrested by Special Agents with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) State Bureau of Investigation (SBI). "These individuals have been charged after a complex and thorough investigation was conducted with assistance from a multitude of law enforcement agencies," the ALEA said in a statement. At a press conference Wednesday, District Attorney Mike Segrest said the pair would be charged as adults and that prosecutors would ask a judge to hold them without bail. A bond hearing must be held by Friday under Alabama law. He said four people remain in the hospital in critical condition and that more charges would be coming. The gunfire broke out Saturday at a 16th birthday party for Alexis Dowdell, which was being held at the dance studio just off the town’s courthouse square. Witnesses have said multiple people began shooting some time after Dowdell’s mother paused the celebration to ask people with guns to leave. The birthday girl’s brother, Philstavious "Phil" Dowdell, reportedly died in his sister’s arms. Besides Phil Dowdell, a star wide receiver with plans to play college football at Jacksonville State this fall, those killed were fellow Dadeville High senior Shaunkivia Nicole "KeKe" Smith, 17, an athlete-turned-team manager; 2022 Opelika High School graduate Marsiah Emmanuel "Siah" Collins, 19, an aspiring singer who planned to start college this fall; and 2018 Dadeville High graduate Corbin Dahmontrey Holston, 23, another former athlete at the school. Holston had gone to the party to check on a younger family member who feared trouble, Holston’s mother Janett Heard told AL.com. Relatives told the news outlet that the shooting began shortly after Holston arrived, and that he pulled his younger relative to safety. https://nypost.com/2023/04/18/chinese-police-stations-allegedly-spying-on-nyc-la-more/ After FBI busts Chinese ‘police station’ in NYC, six more exposed in US The FBI helped shut down a clandestine Chinese “police station” in Manhattan after the arrest of two alleged operatives earlier this week — but The Post is told that there are several more of these illegal organizations scattered across the US. In addition to the Chinese police station above a noodle restaurant in Manhattan’s Chinatown, there is another station at an undisclosed address in New York City, as well as an outpost in Los Angeles, according to a new report by Safeguard Defenders. The Madrid-based human rights group initially published a report last year detailing 100 clandestine Chinese police stations around the world. In addition to Los Angeles and New York, the nonprofit has found so-called “overseas service stations” in San Francisco and Houston as well as in cities in Nebraska and Minnesota. These law enforcement organizations, operated by the Chinese Communist Party, are tasked with spying on Chinese nationals around the world. UFWD is an acronym for United Front Work Department, a Chinese government agency that controls overseas ethnic and religious affairs. Often, the police stations — whose operatives allegedly spy on dissidents and others — hide behind nonprofits and community associations, according to Safeguard Defenders’ reports. In Chinatown, the police station was run by the America ChangLe Association NY Inc., which owns the building at 107 East Broadway where the operation was located, The Post revealed in October. The nonprofit, which listed its charitable mission as a “social gathering place for Fujianese people,” paid $1.3 million in 2016 for the suite of offices that houses the Fuzhou Police Overseas Chinese Affairs bureau at the East Broadway location, filings show. Last year, the group held its annual gala dinner, featuring New York City Mayor Eric Adams as the guest of honor — an event that was not disclosed on the mayor’s official agenda. On Monday, federal agents arrested “Harry” Lu Jianwang, 61, of the Bronx, and Chen Jinping, 59, of Manhattan for allegedly establishing the East Broadway station, known as the Fuzhou branch of the Ministry of Public Security in China. The men allegedly shut down the station last year when they became aware of a federal investigation, according to a statement from the Department of Justice. According to the criminal complaint, Lu also helped track down dissidents who were living in the city. Chinese officials also requested that he participate in demonstrations against Falun Gong, a religious movement subject to crackdown across the globe by the Chinese Communist Party, the complaint said. Lu and Chen also tried to obstruct the DOJ’s investigation by deleting their communications with an official of MPS after finding out about the FBI investigation, federal prosecutors said. The criminal complaint against Lu and Chen was unsealed Monday at the same time that 44 other defendants were charged, in two separate complaints in Brooklyn federal court, for various crimes related to illegally acting on behalf of China in the US. Employees with technical backgrounds like user experience, software engineering, graphics programming and other roles announced on LinkedIn that they had been let go by the company on Wednesday morning. A Meta spokesperson confirmed to CNBC the cuts had started. One employee impacted by the moves told CNBC that Wednesday’s layoffs also hit product-facing teams and that Meta plans to cut business-facing roles, such as finance, legal and HR, beginning in May. The employee, who discussed the layoffs under condition of a-nuh-ni-muh-tee to speak freely, said Meta suggested tech teams who weren’t impacted by Wednesday’s cuts may also be included in layoffs next month. LinkedIn posts indicated that multiple people who worked as gameplay programmers were also affected by the layoffs. Gameplay engineers work on virtual and augmented reality products, according to a Meta job listing. With ad revenue slumping last year and its stock price in free-fall, Facebook’s parent announced its first round of layoffs in November, affecting some 11,000 workers. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg then declared 2023 the “year of efficiency,” and proceeded with a plan of an additional 10,000 job cuts in March, resulting in restructuring costs of between $3 billion and $5 billion. As Zuckerberg said at the time, the new round of April layoffs targets technical workers. He said cuts in the business groups would take place in late May. Wall Street has applauded the downsizing. Meta shares have soared 81% this year after losing about two-thirds of their value last year. Revenue has declined for three straight quarters, and analysts are projecting another quarterly sales drop when Meta reports its first-quarter earnings next week. The company’s previous guidance called for sales of between $26 billion and $28.5 billion, which means the streak of revenue declines could end if Meta reaches the top end of the range. https://www.breitbart.com/immigration/2023/04/18/bidens-border-roughly-180000-more-migrants-in-march/ Biden’s Border Flood: 180,000 More Migrants in March President Joe Biden’s deputies accepted roughly 180,000 more illegal migrants in March to take jobs and homes that would otherwise go to better-paid Americans. The March inflow brings Biden’s total southern inflow to roughly 4.3 million — or more than one migrant for every American born in 2022. That massive inflow spikes Wall Street by cutting Americans’ wages, inflating housing prices, and shifting new jobs and wealth to the coastal states. The two leading GOP candidates for 2024 — Donald Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis — are promising to end the illegal migrant inflow. Federal data released on April 17 shows that 162,317 illegal migrants were arrested at the border in March by the border agents. Biden’s deputies rejected 90,000 of the migrants under the Title 42 border barrier, which is due to expire on May 11. They allowed 104,238 migrants into the United States to take jobs while they plead for asylum. The 104,238 accepted migrants include roughly 80,000 people admitted after they were arrested along the borders, plus 26,583 people who used the agency’s “CBP One” to get an appointment inside the United States for the catch-and-release process. But federal officials also allowed in another 30,000 migrants via quasi-legal loopholes cut by Biden’s pro-migration, Cuban-born border chief, Alejandro Mayorkas. These Cuban, Haitian, Venezuelan, and Nicaraguan migrants fly into the United States by aircraft and are not recorded in the border arrest data. This legal trick allows Mayorkas to claim that he is managing the border chaos created by Biden’s welcome for migrants, despite a judge’s order barring the process. But the monthly data also excludes the so-called “gotaways” who sneak past the half-built wall, decommissioned sensor networks, and diminished border patrol. This “gotaway” population added roughly 50,000 more job-seeking illegal migrants in March. These gotaways are quasi-legal because Mayorkas has announced he will not deport them unless they commit a violent crime. So the total inflow in March was about 180,000 — 104,238 let through the border, 30,000 lets in via Mayorkas’ pathway, plus 50,000 gotaways. Biden’s policies have allowed entry by roughly 4.3 million illegal migrants since January 2021 — or roughly one migrant for every two births in the United States during his tenure. In their press release on the monthly numbers, GOP leaders touted the bigger number of migrants who arrived at the border, not the smaller number of migrants who were actually admitted by Mayorkas. Donor-backed GOP officials rarely mention the huge economic impact of Biden’s migration on voters — or even on swing voters. Roughly 75 percent of the welcomed migrants in March are working-age job-seekers who need to pay their high-interest smuggling debts by working even tough jobs at low wages. That makes them attractive hires for U.S. employers who do not want to hire the roughly six million Americans who have been sidelined by age, criminal records, drugs, laziness, obesity, disability, or reluctance to take jobs for wages below what they have been paid before. The federal government annually admits about 1 million temporary workers — many of whom never go home — plus about 1 million legal immigrants. Those numbers were largely set by Congress in 1990. All told the combination of legal and illegal immigrants delivers roughly one migrant for every American birth each year. And now this! Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis released a parody of the old Bud Light "Real Men of Genius" commercials taking aim at transgender female athletes, including Lia Thomas and CeCé Telfer among others. Instead of Bud Light, which has been involved in a massive controversy over the brand’s partnership with Dylan Mulvaney, the ad introduces Freedom Heavy and "real men of women’s sports." https://twitter.com/i/status/16481268 78207680513 - Play Video 0:00-0:30

Come hear Ken Ham, Pastor Doug Wilson, Dr. Ben Merkle, Dr. Gordon Wilson, me and more, and of course a live CrossPolitic show! Mark your calendars for October 11th-14th, as we fight, laugh, and feast, with beer & psalms, our amazing lineup of speakers, our Rowdy Christian Merch, and a Sabbath Feast to wrap up the occasion.
What's up to my bulging babirusas and polychromatic paddlefish! Welcome back to the BNP and thanks so much for joining! We have a dandy doozy of an ep for ya this week friends, a real ripsnorting pistol whipper. We got a zany audio tidbit, believe that. Also included are two original altered states of consciousness-casts, the first of their kind on the BNP - but certainly not the last. Someone who isn't me gets a hoot out of recording content from a seat in their pineal gland. The meat n potatoes of this week's ep weaves a sordid tale of rampant government corruption, cover-ups at the highest echelons of power, and rogue intelligence agencies. We hear from investigative journalist Gary Webb, who sacrificed his career (and eventually his life) in order to paint a detailed portrait of how the CIA and assorted other 3 letter agencies worked intimately alongside Colombian drug cartels, Nicaraguan right-wing para-militiamen, and inner city dope dealers in order to flood U.S. urban centers (starting in E. L.A., then fanning out from there) with cheap cocaine. This cheap blow could then be cut into crack, making a high price drug suddenly affordable in low income neighborhoods. This highly addictive and socially destructive substance blossomed forth an entirely new drug market. The result was a public health apocalypse, with crack cocaine causing generationally devastating effects throughout urban America and filling the prisons with young black men, who because of racist sentencing legislation were put away for twice as long as their richer, white-collar counterparts selling powdered cocaine uptown. Gary Webb's 1996 expose was entitled Dark Alliance, and it ran in the San Jose Mercury. It's now quite difficult to find online, however currently you can access it here. Download while you can. I end the episode by reading an article outlining Israel's role in arming and supporting brutal right wing dictatorships in Central America. The Guatemalan right wing actually referred to the genocidal slaughter in the 80's as the "Palestinianization" of the country's indigenous Mayan people. If you derive some value from the free shows I put out, please consider supporting my work at https://www.patreon.com/noetics. We kick off Season 7 (!) with a World Baseball Classic wrap-up, an Opening Day kick off, and an intro to our flocks of pitchers. The WBC left many happy results in its wake. Team Australia's Mitch Neunborn was signed by the Phils, Nicaraguan closer Duque Hebbert signed on site by the Tigers, and Team Israel built new ballfields. There were so many more eyeballs on the games, fans in the seats, and merch in the shopping carts than ever before. Closing out our Fantasy Boyfriend Baseball League recruitment, Pottymouth claims the Blue Jays as her pitching flock, with a focus on Alek Manoah. Patti takes the newly shiny Rangers, which allows her to reference rodeos *twice.* And we had to make our tough calls to narrow down this year's boyfriend group to fantasy team rosters. NCiB hero Kim Ng is appointed to the President's Council on Sports, Fitness and Nutrition, and 13 women will take the field as uniformed coaches this season. MLB gets a sense of humor and uses noted rule-follower Tim Anderson and others to explain the rule changes for this season. We say “I throw a nice party and I gotta big screen,” “bouncing Czechs,” and “Alek Manoah may have gone shopping but so did the Rangers.” Get boosted, fight the man, send your game balls to Meredith, and find us on Twitter @ncibpodcast, on Facebook @nocryinginbball, Instagram @nocryinginbball and on the Interweb at nocryinginbball.com. Meet Producer Kelbin: A child of Nicaraguan immigrants, Kelbin talks about the life experiences that shaped him into who he is today!
President Daniel Ortega of Nicaragua suspended diplomatic ties with the Vatican over the weekend in what appears to be retaliation for the pope's strong public criticisms on March 10 of his “rude dictatorship,” likening it to “a communist dictatorship in 1917, or a Hitlerian one in 1935.” These comments were made by the pope in an interview with Infobae, an Argentine news outlet. “I have no other choice,” the pope said, “but to think that the person in power is mentally unbalanced.” On “Inside the Vatican” this week, host Ricardo da Silva, S.J., and veteran Vatican correspondent Gerard O'Connell are joined by senior editor Kevin Clarke to discuss the ongoing conflict between the Nicaraguan president and the Holy See. “There are so few independent voices left within Nicaragua,” Kevin says on the podcast. “Thousands of non-governmental organizations have been shut down. The independent press is essentially acting in exile to cover political developments in Nicaragua. The last man standing was the Catholic Church.” Later on, Ricardo and Gerry discuss another interview Pope Francis gave last week. In the interview with Elisabetta Piqué, who is Gerry's wife and a Rome-based correspondent for La Nacion, the Argentine news outlet, the pope again criticized the ongoing war in Ukraine, stopping short of labeling the wanton killings there a genocide, he also condemned what he called “the ideological colonization of gender,” and announced “everyone will have the right to vote” at the upcoming “Synod on Synodality,” settling a long-held question as to whether women would be allowed to vote for the first time in a church synod. The revelation has taken even senior Vatican officials by surprise. In celebration of Pope Francis' first decade at the helm of the Catholic Church, Ricardo and Gerry close the show sharing their abiding sense of Pope Francis. For Gerry, who has known the pope for 18 years, “this man is a pastor,” he says. “I have seen this at a very personal level, at a level of the family, but I see it also at the level of the leader of the Catholic Church in relation to Catholics, [and] in relation also to the people of the world.” “The phrase that he uses over and over is a ‘culture of encounter,'” Ricardo says. “He's somebody who is constantly trying to read where people are at, what people are struggling with, what people are talking about. Not shutting down conversations, but also not scared to say what he thinks in all of this.” Please consider supporting Inside the Vatican by purchasing a digital subscription to America at www.americamag.org/subscribe. Read transcript Spencer Horwitz hasn't suited up for the Toronto Blue Jays yet. Actually, he hasn't even been to Toronto yet. But the 25-year-old first baseman and outfielder is already making waves on an international stage: just days ago, as a rookie member of Team Israel's roster at the World Baseball Classic, where the Holy Land is the unanimous underdog in a group of Latin American powerhouse teams, Horwitz tied the game in the eighth inning by hitting Israel's first RBI. That completely swung the game's momentum, leading to two more runs by Team Israel—and a upset victory for the Jews. Days before Horwitz's herculean swing, he joined the Menschwarmers for a friendly interview about his upbringing in Baltimore, why he joined Team Israel and how excited he is to get to Toronto for his first-ever major league game. Plus, Gabe and Jamie catch up on Max Homa's continued rise to stardom, Lance Stroll's feat of broken-wrist racing and the (unfortunately) historic game Team Israel played at the WBC after that initial Nicaraguan victory. Speaking to the Italian daily Il Fatto Quotidiano, Francis declined to evaluate his pontificate so far, saying the Lord will judge his life one day based on whether he practiced the Corporal Works of Mercy as taught by Jesus. “The Church is not a business, or an NGO, and the pope is not an administrator who has been commissioned to balance the numbers at the end of the year,” he said, according to an English transcript published on Il Fatto Quotidiano March 12. According to the pope, it's not easy to pay attention to God's will and put it into practice: “It's necessary to attune yourself with the Lord, not with the world.” Asked about his wish for the world, Pope Francis responded: “peace.” https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/253848/not-an-easy-job-pope-francis-asks-for-prayers-on-10th-anniversary-as-pope The president of Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega, has ordered the closing of the Vatican embassy in Managua and the Nicaraguan embassy to the Holy See in Rome, according to Reuters. And according to the AP, Vatican sources confirmed there had been a request from Nicaragua to shut down the two embassies. The proposal to suspend relations between the Vatican and Nicaragua follows just days after Pope Francis likened Nicaragua's Sandinista government to Nazi Germany in an interview. He also called Ortega “unstable.” Ortega, who leads Nicaragua's socialist Sandinista National Liberation Front party, has governed Nicaragua continuously since 2007 along with his wife, Rosario Murillo, who is now the vice president. The regime has variously been accused of corruption, voter fraud, imprisoning critical dissenters and journalists, and committing violent human rights abuses against the people of Nicaragua. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/253850/report-nicaragua-to-close-vatican-embassy-in-managua-nicaraguan-embassy-to-holy-see Today, the Church celebrates Saint Roderick, a priest in Cabra, Spain during the persecution of Christians by the Moors. Archbishop José Gomez presided over the funeral Mass, held at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles. Speaking briefly at the conclusion of the liturgy, Gomez said “Bishop Dave,” as O'Connell was affectionately known, would be sorely missed, but “we know that he's in heaven.” O'Connell, 69, a popular Irish-born priest who worked on myriad social causes in South LA for the past 45 years, died February 18 after being shot multiple times in his Hacienda Heights home, according to District Attorney George Gascón. Carlos Medina, the husband of O'Connell's housekeeper, has admitted to murdering the bishop, Gascón said in a February 22 press conference. Earlier in the week, both Pope Francis and President Joe Biden issued condolences to O'Connell's family and all those grieving his death. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/253792/we-know-that-he-s-in-heaven-thousands-gather-for-funeral-of-bishop-david-o-connell-in-los-angeles Dozens of people reportedly were murdered in post-election attacks on villages in Nigeria's Benue State Wednesday, according to a diocesan official. During the attacks, Fulani men armed with military gear descended on the Benue State capital, Makurdi, the official said. One of the latest low points in the Nicaraguan dictatorship's persecution of the Church was the recent sentencing of Álvarez to 26 years and four months in prison as a “traitor to the homeland” convicted of “undermining national security and sovereignty” and “spreading fake news.” The bishop was also stripped of his Nicaraguan citizenship. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/253788/aid-to-the-church-in-need-greatly-concerned-about-nicaraguan-bishop-sentenced-to-prison Today, the Church celebrates Saint Colette, the founder of the Colettine Poor Clares (Clarisses). https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/saint/st-colette-413

A chingona feminist, theologian, storyteller, and advocate in her own right, she is also a fellow Latina with a Master's degree who earned her Masters of Divinity from Vanderbilt University's Divinity School. Christina and Prisca, both sharing the culture and identity of first-generation Nicaraguans, who talk about her book "For Brown Girls" that at this point, is every Brown Girls bible and guide who have experienced imposter syndrome, sense of belonging or simply being called a "difficult daughter". She's all vibes in this episode as she is not afraid to say it how it is and shares big pockets of wisdom for us Latinx who are navigating graduate school, her views on the the lack of Latinx representation in the media and on social media but most of all, she is hella chill and down to earth sharing some personal favorites and what we can expect and look forward to next from nuestra amiga and Latina Rebel Prisca! We hope you enjoy this podcast episode as much as Prisca and Christina enjoyed bringing this episode to life. Stephen Sackur speaks to Félix Maradiaga, the former opposition leader and presidential candidate imprisoned by Nicaragua's veteran autocrat Daniel Ortega. Maradiaga was recently released, deported to the US and stripped of his Nicaraguan citizenship. Ortega is trying to eliminate all Nicaraguan opposition - could he succeed?
The greatest threat to the Ortega regime in Nicaragua? Ideas. And that's how Félix Maradiaga, Nicaraguan political activist, ended up in solitary confinement, in darkness, for months on end, with little food, little water and suffering interrogations without end. And his dearest wish, now, safe in the US? To be guided not by hate or resentment but by love, to create a different future for not only his grandchildren but those of his torturers. Welcome to the United States, Mr. Maradiaga. You elevate us all.
More than 300 Nicaraguans have been stripped of their citizenship. They're considered political opponents of the president, Daniel Ortega. Some were already out of the country, but 222 were recently deported from Nicaragua to the United States and forced into exile. It's the latest move by President Ortega to crack down on political dissidents. But will it succeed in silencing them? In this episode: Felix Maradiaga (@maradiaga), Nicaraguan activist and former presidential candidate Episode credits: This episode was produced by Ashish Malhotra with Chloe K. The astonishing events that occurred when the communist Sandanistas put 500 deaf Nicaraguan children in one special school in Managua. No, Agatha, I am sorry but Koko the gorilla could not speak. And Fred, I am sorry but Kanzi the chimpanzee did not ever speak either. Do how did humans acquire the miracle of speech if it is not found in monkeys, racehorses, or dolphins? Oh yes, they certainly communicate, as do bees. But that is quite different from describing abstract ideas with sounds. Humans use language to discuss monkeys, dolphins, and everything else on our planet. No creature uses language to discuss humans. LAS SANDINISTAS. uncovers a watershed moment in history when a group of Nicaraguan women shattered barriers to lead rebel troops in battle and reshape their country with landmark social reforms during 1979's Sandinista Revolution and the ensuing US-backed Contra War - only to face renewed marginalization by their male peers once the wars ended. Now, 35 years later, amid the worst levels of violence against women in Nicaraguan history, these same women take to the streets to lead the popular movements for equality and democracy once again.
It's Friday, February 17th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. By Adam McManus (Adam@TheWorldview.com) 22 civilians in Congo killed by rebel group On February 12th and 13th, 22 civilians were killed in two separate attacks in Africa's Democratic Republic of Congo. The attacks took place in the conflict-ridden province of Ituri, reports International Christian Concern. The perpetrators of the attacks, which occurred about twelve hours apart, are suspected to belong to a local rebel group called CODECO, which stands for “Cooperative for Development of the Congo,” which is one of the many militias operating in the east of the country. Congo is the 37th most dangerous country in the world for Christians. Pray that justice would be done. Proverbs 21:15 says, “When justice is done, it brings joy to the righteous, but terror to evildoers.” The story of one Turkish woman On February 12th, an elderly woman approached the Samaritan's Purse site near the location of the Turkish earthquake in need of something to eat as she is diabetic. One of their registered nurses, named Rhonda, who happens to speak Turkish, was able to give her a banana during a brief break from setting up the tents and equipment. More importantly, Rhonda provided a listening ear. The elderly woman shared that she is from another area in Turkey, but that her family lives here. After hearing the news of the devastating earthquakes, she traveled to the city to find her daughter and grandchildren. To her utter dismay, they had all died in the disaster. While speaking with the Samaritan's Purse staff, the woman shed tears and thanked the ministry for coming to Turkey. She offered hugs and kisses before leaving the site in search of somewhere to stay for the night. Her story is heartbreaking, but just one of so many in Turkey today. Daniel Ortega stripped 94 Nicaraguans of citizenship, deports to U.S. Nicaraguan dictator Daniel Ortega stripped 94 Nicaraguans of their citizenship, including some of the Central American country's most celebrated writers and journalists, reports The Guardian. The move was announced by a Nicaraguan judge on February 15th. Last week, 222 political prisoners, including some of Nicaragua's leading opposition activists, were deported from Nicaragua and flown to the U.S. – a move widely interpreted as a sign of Ortega's determination to remain in power after 16 years as president. Nicaragua's government called the deportees, who were also stripped of their citizenship, “traitors to the motherland.” Brian Nichols, the U.S. state department's assistant secretary for western hemisphere affairs, tweeted, “This deplorable act represents a step further away from the democracy the people of Nicaragua deserve.” And speaking to the Washington Post last week, Juan Pappier, with Human Rights Watch, said, “The country is on the verge of becoming the western hemisphere's equivalent of North Korea.” Senator John Fetterman suffering clinical depression Democrat Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania checked himself into Walter Reed Hospital to receive treatment for clinical depression on Wednesday night, reports Breitbart. Adam Jentleson, his chief of staff, said, “While John has experienced depression off and on throughout his life, it only became severe in recent weeks. On Monday, John was evaluated by Dr. Brian Monahan, the Attending Physician of the United States Congress. Yesterday, Dr. Monahan recommended inpatient care at Walter Reed. John agreed, and he is receiving treatment on a voluntary basis.” Fetterman suffered a stroke last year before he won the Pennsylvania Senate race in a highly competitive contest against Dr. Mehmet Oz. His office said this month that he was hospitalized after he felt lightheaded but that tests ruled out another stroke, reports NBC News. 4th abortion complication at University of New Mexico abortion mill On February 15th, Abortion Free New Mexico volunteers documented the fourth abortion complication of 2023 at the University of New Mexico Center for Reproductive Health abortion mill in Albuquerque. A woman was placed into an ambulance and taken to the emergency room during the lunch hour. This occurred just six days after the last abortion complication that was recorded by the No Sidewalk Without the Savior volunteers. The steady rate of abortion injuries at this location raises red flags about who is causing these injuries on unsuspecting women, most of whom are traveling there from out of state. It has been well documented by Abortion Free New Mexico that the University of New Mexico participates in the Ryan Residency Training program whose main emphasis is to “ensure the availability of abortion care in hospitals and make sure that all obstetrician-gynecologists are skilled to provide abortion." Tara Shaver of Abortion Free New Mexico invited Christian pro-lifers to “join us as we call upon the governing leadership at the University of New Mexico to shut down this dangerous late-term abortion facility." You can sign the petition through a special link in our transcript today at www.TheWorldview.com. Florida Christian college cancels singers over homosexuality And finally, on February 11th, Pensacola Christian College cancelled The King's Singers, a highly regarded British male a cappella ensemble which sings pop, classical, and sacred music, because one of their singers is an active homosexual, reports CNN. Jonathan Howard, one of the six members of The King's Singers, told The New York Times that two members of the group were homosexual. In a tweet, The King's Singers said, “It has become clear to us, from a flood of correspondence from students and members of the public, that these concerns related to the sexuality of members of our group.” In a responsive tweet, Pensacola Christian College, a private independent Baptist institution, said that it “cannot knowingly give an implied or direct endorsement of anything that violates the Holy Scripture, the foundation of our sincerely held beliefs. Pensacola Christian College cancelled a concert with The King's Singers upon learning that one of the artists openly maintained a lifestyle that contradicts Scripture. “The highly talented musicians were treated with dignity and respect when informed of the cancellation. The artists stated their understanding and acceptance of the change and were given full remuneration.” A section referring to sexuality in the school's articles of faith notes: “We believe that God has commanded that sexual activity be exclusively reserved to a man and a woman who are legally married to each other.” It goes on to say that scripture forbids “sexual immorality including adultery, fornication, homosexuality, bestiality, incest, and the use of pornography.” Because of its Biblical stand, Pensacola Christian College is being called homophobic and unchristian by homosexuals and their supporters, reports ThePinkNews. But Ephesians 5:11 says, “Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.” Take a moment and thank the college's president, Dr. Troy Shoemaker.
