Jason drives up to the Skagit Valley to meet up with Shane "Showtime" Armstrong, Master Blender at Westland Distillery. The two walk around the warehouse tasting from a number of single casks and then head down to the Westland distillery in Seattle to spend some time in the sensory/blending room to share some of that experience with you, the listeners. This is an ultra geeky episode that gets into the nitty-gritty of what makes a single cask a single cask and what makes a cask of whisky better suited for a blending component. ...as usual, have a seat, have a pour, and listen in. Unless you're driving. If you're driving, be smart and stay sober but be sure to listen into the conversation! At the 2025 Premium Cigar Association (PCA) Trade Show, Matilde Cigars paid homage to its late founder, José Seijas. Before founding Matilde Cigars, José Seijas was best known for his tenure at Tabacalera de Garcia, where he served as Master Blender and Vice President of Operations. Seijas passed away in November 2024 from Parkinson's disease. He was 74 years old. This year, José's son Enrique released a cigar with his father's name on it. Text us your wine questions, craziest wine experiences, or if you just have a comment for us. . This week's podcast features a chat with Dr. Don Livermore. Though you are unlikely to know who he is, it is entirely likely that you have had products that he has overseen in his nearly 30 years at the Hiram-Walker distillery and the brand in question today - J.P. Wiser's, which is Canada's longest running brand of whisky. Wiser's is older than Canada, if that gives you some indication Dr. Don is, on paper, a Master Blender, but in reality, he's a virtuoso performer in that roll. He is the first Canadian to win Master Blender of the Year in the world at the World Whisky Awards. He developed the Canadian Whisky Flavour Wheel, a comprehensive and must-have resource for anyone interested in learning more about flavours in Canadian whisky. More than anything though, he is an amazing ambassador for Canadian whisky and is willing to take time to talk about the history, the chemistry, and art of making whisky. I really hope to have him on the podcast again in the future to learn more about the history of whisky in Canada. So here it I, my conversation with Dr. Don Livermore from JP Wiser's. A Weirdly Timed Episode... Let's get the awkwardness out of the way - I had the pleasure of interviewing Mel Maddox, now-former Master Blender for Old Elk, on May 2nd. A few days later, it was announced that Old Elk had been acquired by Middle West Spirits (a previous guest!) and, subsequently, all workings at their Fort Collins, Colorado location were ceasing. This included laying off all production staff, including Mel. This was still a wonderful conversation in which I learned about Old Elk, but my favorite part was learning more about Mel. The way she looks at whiskey when creating a blend is synesthetic, hard to describe to those who haven't experienced what color something tastes like or the what shape a mashbill makes in your mind. It's a beautiful talent (my version is seeing sounds in color) that is at once intangible and singular. Long story short...I don't know what the next steps are for Old Elk, or for Mel, but I wish them both the best. I think Old Elk was putting out the best stuff it ever had, and clearly her talents were on full display in blending and finishing. We as whiskey enthusiasts can only hope her next role continues to rely on those talents. Thank you to Mel for entering the Whiskey Ring! This episode features Drew Mayville of Buffalo Trace and Sazerac. When Drew was originally looking for work he applied to a brewery and a distillery. The distillery turned out to be Seagram's. In hind sight this was his best move. He began in the distillery lab. After many years of working in different areas he was promoted to the Master Blender. We discuss his role at Buffalo Trace and some of the nuances for being a Master Blender. His first priority is being responsible for the consistency and quality of the spirit that goes into every bottle. Drew is always looking to make a better whiskey with Sazerac's Buffalo Trace Distillery. Today he's transitioning into being more of an ambassador and educating people about the products. After the interview, The Master Blender led us through a master class on some of Buffalo Trace's most coveted expressions. Almost 200 plus in attendance at Roger Wilco were grateful for this once in a lifetime experience. www.BuffaloTrace.com - www.Sazerac.com - Instagram Be sure to support our sponsor Brewscuits and use the code fa2024 at checkout for 15% off your entire order. The platform of this podcast was to help connect listeners to the brands they see on the store shelves. As time has gone on, sometimes we discover there really isn't much substance to a brand. But today's guest is the very opposite. I found myself enthralled with our guests history in the culinary world and what he's doing to make his whiskey be one that many can appreciate from the liquid to the blending. Sean Josephs is the Co-Founder & Master Blender behind Pinhook. You know all those bottles with race horses on the label and different colored wax. Sean talks about getting his start in restaurants, grinding it out, and eventually working at some of the world's premier establishments and becoming such a decorated wine sommelier that he would be considered famous by those standards. Consider me a bit star struck by the time this episode is over. Then he finds a new passion in bourbon and opens up one of the first ever whiskey bars in Brooklyn and eventually left to start Pinkhook bourbon. Sean's passion comes through and we learn the secret decoder ring to knowing more about all his Pinhook bottles and what's in store for the future. Show Notes: Above the Char with Fred Minnick (@fredminnick) talks about adding water to high proof whiskey. What's your background and how did you get into bourbon? As a somm, do you remember the most epic wine? Was starting a whiskey bar in 2008 in Brooklyn a bold move? Were barrel selections becoming popular for restaurants in 2016? What made you want to stop doing bars and restaurants and start the whiskey brand? Can you explain the packaging and colors and how they work? What makes your whiskey special and what are you doing there? How long do you think you'll have enough whiskey to keep your projects going? Support this podcast on Patreon

Blending. Distilling. What does it mean to “make” whiskey? Eboni Major joins Greg and Sother live from Birmingham, Alabama, to break down a day in the life of a whiskey blender (spoiler alert, there are a lot more spreadsheets than you might think), discuss her often winding path through the world of food and beverage, and open up about what it's like as a Black woman in the bar community to hold a former employer accountable. Plus, real life vs. VR. Greg and Sother talk about what it was like finally being in the same room together and Greg shares the results of a head-to-head bartending challenge between a chatbot and a bunch of regular-ass humans.
