This is the tenth Wingin' It in our series on Church History, in which Wade and Mike are using Mark A. Noll's book Turning Points: Decisive Moments in the History of Christianity as the spring-board for their discussion. Their intention is to use his structure as a rough guide for their conversations; so if you're looking for a book study guide, you'll need to keep looking. If you're looking to hear Mike and Wade find another excuse to record a conversation about things they enjoy, though, you're in the right place.  This episode picks up with the tenth chapter of Noll's book, which Noll entitles The New Piety: The Conversion of the Wesleys (1738). We hope you'll enjoy this  Wingin' It series. (And if you do, don't forget to share!) We are happy to be a part of the 1517 Podcast Network. On this weeks’ episode we take you back to the 2nd Annual Here We Still Stand conference in beautiful, if slightly milquetoast, San Diego (just kidding San Diego, we love you, as we have recorded at least once a year from your confines only to eventually praise your street food, socio-economic diversity and weather).   Think of it as part of the road trip, as we recorded this show almost immediately upon returning from our road trip.  Stay tuned in the next few weeks as we continue releasing those shows.  On this live show we talk with Debi Winrich on her new podcast “the Soul of Christianity” as well as Dr. Russ McCullough from the Gwartney Institute to discuss his work on Christianity and Capitalism.   If you’re still reading, cool. So we can get a little more serious.  Not really serious, but just more familiar.  This is Dan, I write in the third person plural sometimes, but usually it’s me.  So.... hey.  This conference was super rad and you will be hearing our talks (mine in some edited fashion) soon.  But it was also crazy anxiety inducing for me as it could seem like a kind of intellectual fashion show for a specific type of religious speaker.  I had initially thought that we were doing a show that a few people might watch, but not that we were doing an actual live program.  You see, an hour or so of intellectual-and-otherwise chit chat isn’t that hard, but it’s also not a live performance.  At any rate, I had an acting coach once tell me that the last thing you should do is apologize before a performance.  What did she know, anyway?  Enjoy the show.  Even if it sounds rushed and stilted in the beginning because it was a strange new environment and I felt like a caged animal on display.  But it was fun. For reals!   Peace!

On episode SEVENTY-SIX of Let the Bird Fly! the guys are thrilled to be joined by Rev. Dr. John Pless of Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, IN, as well as by returning guest Rev. Bror Erickson. But they're not only joined by these two fantastic guests, they are also joined by a live audience, as this episode was recorded at the 2018 Here We Still Stand conference, which was held in October of 2018.  Recording in front of a live audience changes things a bit, but perhaps the biggest challenge for Wade was being told he had to keep it to 40 minutes! So with guests of this caliber and a limited time, they cut right to the chase, skipping the Scripture Narrative and the Free-for-All. Instead the guys get right to the business of discussing Hermann Sasse, a theologian that both Dr. Pless and Rev. Erickson have a wealth of knowledge about. As always, we're grateful to the 1517 podcasting network, but we are especially thankful for giving us the opportunity to record this episode at the Here We Still Stand conference. Speaking of the 1517 Podcast Network, they have a newly released series entitled The Soul of Christianity, that you should check out. It's a 12 part series on the Apostle's Creed, which is hosted by Debi Winrich and Dan van Voorhis. And while you're at it, make sure to check out all the great podcast in the 1517 Podcast Network. 00:00 - Introduction 05:23 - Free-for-All (Pitcher hits or designated hitter) 16:26 - Main Topic (Imago Dei) On episode SEVENTY-FIVE of Let the Bird Fly! the guys sit down with Rev. Adam Morton to discuss Imago Dei (or specifically what it means to be created in the image of God). The guys recorded this episode will at the Here We Still Stand 2018 conference, which was held in October of 2018. Rev. Morton was gracious enough to sit down with the guys not once, but twice (you'll see what we mean a little over 30 minutes into the episode). Rev. Morton is currently working on his doctorate at the University of Nottingham. As is our want, however, we make you suffer through a Free-for-All before getting to the Main Topic. In this episode we bring back a favorite from way back on Episode 3: pitcher hits or designated hitter. After roundly beating Wade, however, we move on to a wonderful conversation with Rev. Morton. What is the Soul of Christianity? Soul (noun) 1. the emotional part of human nature; the seat of the feelings or sentiments 2. the principle of life, feeling, thought, and action in humans 3. the animating principle; the essential element or part of something On this podcast we get to the essential element of Christianity as Debi Winrich has sought out a few of her friends and acquaintances to help her get to the “soul” of Christianity in a way that is both intellectually stimulating and also accessible. Some podcasts can cater to the academic crowd and leave the layperson scratching their head, or they can hold long held traditions in contempt for lack of understanding. Rather than play to either the professional or lay crowd, we decided we would bring them together. Debi brought her many talents to the show, chief among them, to call out the professor, theologian or pastor who obfuscates, uses big words, and sometimes seems to miss the point. And to keep us focused, we chose the original creed of the early church: the Apostles Creed. Debi has interviewed 12 professors, pastors and theologians, and interspersed her conversations with her producer, Dr. Daniel van Voorhis (of the Virtue in the Wasteland podcast) as they help us get to the Soul of Christianity.
