We wanted to continue the tradition of having our December instalment of We Have A Commentary deal with an album well outside of Our Thing, and loved the idea of doing a "Weird Al" Yankovic LP. Al's been a huge influence on our lives and cultural tastes from a very young age, so the only question was which album we'd discuss. We turned things over to our Patreon backers, who selected Al's third record, 1985's Dare To Be Stupid. It's an end to end burner and gave us all sorts of opportunities to discuss both the minutiae and the broad strokes of what's made Al such a beloved and admired figure to us and so many others.

Hello to you, Marilyn, listening in Hancock, New Hampshire!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington, this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds (and a bit more) for Wednesdays on Whidbey—this final day of the old year—and your host, Diane Wyzga.      Shoveling Snow With Buddha by Billy Collins"In the usual iconography of the temple or the local Wokyou would never see him doing such a thing,tossing the dry snow over the mountainof his bare, round shoulder,his hair tied in a knot,a model of concentration. Sitting is more his speed, if that is the wordfor what he does, or does not do. Even the season is wrong for him.In all his manifestations, is it not warm and slightly humid?Is this not implied by his serene expression,that smile so wide it wraps itself around the waist of the universe? But here we are, working our way down the driveway,one shovelful at a time.We toss the light powder into the clear air.We feel the cold mist on our faces.And with every heave we disappearand become lost to each otherin these sudden clouds of our own making,these fountain-bursts of snow. This is so much better than a sermon in church,I say out loud, but Buddha keeps on shoveling.This is the true religion, the religion of snow,and sunlight and winter geese barking in the sky,I say, but he is too busy to hear me. He has thrown himself into shoveling snowas if it were the purpose of existence,as if the sign of a perfect life were a clear drivewayone you could back the car down easilyand drive off into the vanities of the worldwith a broken heater fan and a song on the radio. All morning long we work side by side,me with my commentaryand he inside the generous pocket of his silence,until the hour is nearly noonand the snow is piled high all around us;then, I hear him speak. After this, he asks,can we go inside and play cards? Certainly, I reply, and I will heat some milkand bring cups of hot chocolate to the tablewhile you shuffle the deck,and our boots stand dripping by the door. Aaah, says the Buddha, lifting his eyesand leaning for a moment on his shovelbefore he drives the thin blade againdeep into the glittering white snow."My New Year wish for you: As the old year folds onto itself and the new year dawns I wish for you that your everyday activities, even the very simple tasks, bring humor, contemplation, and a sense of magic in the ordinary. 1. Welfare System Fraud and Structural Issues Based on an op-ed by Phil Gramm and John Early in The Wall Street Journal titled “The Biggest Fraud in Welfare”. Key points: U.S. welfare spending has skyrocketed 765% since the mid-1970s, now totaling $1.4 trillion annually. If distributed evenly among the 19.8 million families classified as poor, each would receive $71,000 per year. The government fails to count non-cash benefits (Medicaid, housing subsidies, food stamps) as income, creating a distorted picture of poverty. Example: A single parent earning $11,000 annually can receive benefits worth $53,128, bringing total resources to $64,128, well above the poverty threshold. Criticism of the system: It traps people in dependency instead of promoting self-sufficiency, contrasting with Trump-era welfare reform that moved 7 million people off food stamps into the workforce. 2. Massive Fraud in Minnesota’s Medicaid and Welfare Programs Federal prosecutors allege up to $9 billion in fraud since 2018, possibly 50% of the $18 billion spent on 14 programs. Fraud described as “industrial scale”, involving fake companies and individuals exploiting housing and autism assistance programs. Some funds allegedly funneled to Al Shabab, a Somali terrorist organization. Criticism of Minnesota’s Democratic leadership for lack of oversight and alleged vote-buying incentives. Prediction: Similar fraud likely exists in California, New York, and Illinois. Media accused of downplaying the scandal; local CBS reports highlighted the severity. 3. Strong U.S. Economic Performance Under Trump Latest GDP report shows 4.3% growth in Q3, the strongest in two years, beating expectations of 3.2%. Growth driven by consumer spending, healthcare, tech, and AI-related investments. Inflation reportedly down to 1.6%, signaling economic stability. Commentary contrasts media narratives predicting economic collapse with reality of strong holiday spending and trade policy success.
