Following five years of research and consultations, the ICRC published a new, updated Commentary on the Fourth Geneva Convention (GC IV) of 1949 in October 2025. GC IV is the cornerstone of protection for civilians in international armed conflict and occupation – protections that remain urgently relevant amid patterns of urban warfare, strikes on essential services, and persistent harm to people who are not, or are no longer, taking part in hostilities. The 2025 Commentary, following the interpretive methodology outlined in the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties, consolidates seven decades of practice, jurisprudence, and operational experience into a practical guide to applying GC IV's safeguards effectively today. Over the coming weeks, we are delighted to co-host a joint symposium with the editors of Just Security and EJIL:Talk!, sharing expert contributions on selected topics addressed in the updated ICRC Commentary on the Fourth Geneva Convention. We hope this analysis will help shed light on important aspects of the Fourth Convention that are explored in depth in the updated Commentary, outline developments in law, technology and language since 1949, and give readers an idea of what has changed since the initial ICRC Commentary on this Convention was published in 1958. As Jean-Marie Henckaerts highlights below, a good faith interpretation and application of the Fourth Convention is indispensable: “it keeps interpretation anchored in the Conventions' object and purpose, ensuring that their protective spirit prevails over technical evasions.” His following post, initially published on 21 October 2025, serves as an introduction both to the updated Commentary and to this symposium.
1. Democratic Candidates Struggle on Foreign Policy At the Munich Security Conference, AOC, Gretchen Whitmer, and Gavin Newsom are portrayed as unprepared on major foreign‑policy questions. AOC gives vague and confused answers regarding whether the U.S. should defend Taiwan against China. Whitmer appears unsure when asked what “victory” in Ukraine looks like, deflecting the question to an ambassador. Commentary suggests this reflects a broader weakness in foreign‑policy understanding among potential 2028 Democratic contenders. 2. Criticism of Far‑Left Ideology The intellectual foundation of the far left is hollow compared to past decades. They claim AOC’s comments reflect ideological simplicity, reliance on identity politics, and lack of deep geopolitical knowledge. Suggestion that cultural Marxism and DEI-style frameworks have replaced rigorous foreign‑policy thought. 3. AOC’s Israel Comments AOC is criticized for saying U.S. aid to Israel should be conditioned and alleging Israel committed “genocide” in Gaza. The hosts argue her position is ideologically driven and historically insensitive, especially when stated in Germany. They also claim Hamas statements contradict the genocide narrative. 4. Predictions About 2028 Politics: AOC will likely run for president. Chuck Schumer may encourage her to do so to avoid competing with her for Senate. If AOC runs, Mondaire Jones / Mondami (context suggests a progressive challenger) could run for Schumer’s Senate seat. 5. Obama’s Recent Commentary Barack Obama is criticized for: Calling certain ICE actions “rogue behavior.” Comparing Republican messaging to demagoguery while presenting Democrats as unifying. Hosts claim Obama is historically partisan and argue many current Democratic positions stem from his ideological influence. 6. Claims That Democrats Are Anti‑Law‑Enforcement Gavin Newsom is accused of comparing American law enforcement to “secret police.” The hosts argue Democrats are reviving rhetoric similar to segregation‑era resistance to federal authority. 7. U.S. Foreign Policy Under Obama and Biden Allegations that Obama and Biden’s foreign policy empowered Iran and weakened global deterrence. Claim that U.S. ambiguity over Taiwan is mishandled by the left. 8. Potomac River Sewage Issue Over 1 billion gallons of wastewater spilled into the Potomac. Washington, DC officials say repairs will take up to nine months, criticized as incompetence in government management. Please Hit Subscribe to this podcast Right Now. This is an episode all about the hard stuff. Politics. Disagreement on tour. Tour sites where the truth itself is in debate. Confronting places with complicated, dark histories. Most of the advice out there is: avoid this stuff at all costs. People just want to have fun, they're on vacation. Guides should stick to the script and make sure they don't say something that upsets the guests. I'm not here as a tour guide to shove my opinions down everyone's throats. Can't we all just get along? Can't we just keep the discourse civil? Our guest this week, Mike Fishback, is a middle-school humanities educator and curriculum designer who thinks this instinct is exactly the problem. "Civil discourse" isn't about keeping things polite — it's about strategies for engaging with and managing disagreement and difficulty in learning situations, like a tour. Mike learned through experience that it's unwise to sit back, cross your fingers, and hope you don't upset a guest. That there are powerful ways to lean into difficult topics that make the whole experience more meaningful — intentionally creating dialogue through artful questioning and participatory techniques. And he has the educational frameworks and two decades of lived experience to back every word of it up.Mike also happens to have spent years as a client of mine — I was the tour guide for his group of middle schoolers on trips to New York and DC, and I saw firsthand how he engaged his students with really meaty, difficult topics in a way that didn't shut them down but fired them up.The lessons here aren't for kids. They're for everyone. And if you've ever told yourself that your job is just to deliver the facts and keep things light, this conversation might be the most useful hour you spend all week.More takeaways and show notes on tourpreneur.com

Chuck Todd takes a hard look at the state of American governance and institutional trust — or the lack of it. He starts by reflecting on the historical significance of three consecutive one-term presidents, ranking his top five most underrated commanders-in-chief and arguing that both Biden and Trump are unlikely to be viewed as consequential a century from now. From there, Todd pivots to a searing indictment of the current moment: from the Epstein reckoning exposing the government's inability to tell the truth, to DHS being treated as a political plaything by Kristi Noem and Corey Lewandowski, to the DOD endangering lives in the El Paso FAA incident with zero accountability, to Moderna alleging that HHS refused to even review an mRNA flu vaccine under RFK Jr.'s watch. He connects the dots across a pattern of institutional dishonesty — a Justice Department focused on narrative management, masked ICE agents no one can justify, a fired antitrust chief clearing the way for powerful interests, and a "hostage system" style of governing that holds federal paychecks as leverage — making the case that when the government lies this often, it forfeits the benefit of the doubt on everything, and that the Epstein scandal isn't just a story about one man, but a mirror reflecting a system designed to protect the powerful. Finally, Chuck hops into the ToddCast Time Machine to revisit the publishing of the Communist Manifesto and argues that while its critiques of the excesses of capitalism were correct… it’s revolutionary prescriptions led to the worst authoritarian states in modern history. He also answers listeners’ questions in the “Ask Chuck” segment. Get your wardrobe sorted and your gift list handled with Quince. Don't wait! Handspun documentation I went through nearly all of my handspun skeins of yarn. I made updates in each page on Ravelry to add skein information. You can enter length and weight and it add that to your stash. I also ended up changing the names of the finished projects to include the weight and length! I wrote yarn weight (dk sport etc) on physical tags i have on the yarn. So much easier for me to work with. I found this by searching the yarn on ravelry then doing the advance pattern search to look for sweaters people knit with this yarn. Related- Eileen recently asked if someone in our group had knit a certain pattern she had questions about before purchasing/committing to. If you look at the pattern on Rav and click the Projects Tab. You can use the filters there to select "Made by Group Members" and then click on the Rav group you want to look in. You can use that to see who you want to chat w/ about it. ElizabethisKnitting (on Instagram- shared her Winter Soul Sweater in this post. Its so beautiful! Why are you not all knitting this? Friday date nights with Dan Running into Riley & her bestie Ellie at Lucky Finn, my current local favorite coffee shop- after the gym on a Saturday morning. It was so hilarious! Very much enjoyed Pluribus on Apple TV+. Seeing Millie in Finding Nemo Jr. and an early dinner after with family. Mani/pedis with Megg, Eme & Hattie for Hattie's birthday. Super Bowl- while we lost it's always fun to watch. I enjoyed the commercials, and had fun cheering on the Seahawks kicker Jason Myers who played football at Marist where I went to college (now Marist University) Hattie's 8th birthday dinner. Dad and I did a Zoom beforehand in celebration of what would have been Mom's 70th with a few of her cousins. Quote of the Week Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them humanity cannot survive. -Dalai Lama ------ Thank you for tuning in! Contact Information: Check out the Down Cellar Studio Patreon! We're Still Learning Pt. 3 | February 15, 2026Pastor Bria BradshawColossians 3:12-13 (ESV) Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.“Because the Bible emphasizes healthy relationships so highly, it's sad that there are so many believers who have hurting or broken relationships. Many Christian homes have been shattered by divorce. Some who stay married are unhappy. Their homes are a tense battle ground, not a loving refuge. Many Christian parents are at odds with their kids and the kids with their parents. On the church level, some bounce from church to church, leaving a trail of damaged relationships behind. I know of Christians who won't speak to other Christians because of misunderstandings, hurt feelings, and wrongs that have taken place. Sadly, the loving families, genuine friendships, and healthy relationships that we want most out of life often elude us.”- Commentary on Colossians 3:12-13Your relationships need a healed you.Unhealthy: That was so long ago. It doesn't matter now.Healthy: What happened then impacts what happens now.Unhealthy: My life is fine. It didn't really bother me.Healthy: I may not see what God can see.Unhealthy: I'm a new creation in Christ. I've put that all behind me.Healthy: The old is made new by acknowledging my need for healing not ignoring it.Mark 8:22-26 (ESV) And they came to Bethsaida. And some people brought to [Jesus] a blind man and begged him to touch him. And he took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village, and when he had spit on his eyes and laid his hands on him, he asked him, “Do you see anything?” And he looked up and said, “I see people, but they look like trees, walking.” Then Jesus laid his hands on his eyes again; and he opened his eyes, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly. And he sent him to his home, saying, “Do not even enter the village.”WE'RE STILL LEARNING TO HEAL1. Let Jesus lead your healing journey.Mark 8:23 (ESV) And he took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village…Ask the Lord, “Where do you want to lead me?”2. Let Jesus do what He wants and how He wants.Mark 8:23-25 (ESV) “...and when he had spit on his eyes and laid his hands on him, he asked him, “Do you see anything?” And he looked up and said, “I see people, but they look like trees, walking.” Then Jesus laid his hands on his eyes again…Ask the Lord, “Will you do for me what I can't do for myself?”3. Let Jesus show you what you haven't seen in a while.Mark 8:25 (ESV) …and he opened his eyes, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly.Ask the Lord, “What do you want to restore that I haven't seen in a while?”4. Go where Jesus tells you to go next.Mark 8:26 (ESV) And he sent him to his home, saying, “Do not even enter the village.”Ask the Lord, “Where are you sending me from here?”

Most people have one or two core self-care needs that, if they're met, everything else feels easier. This episode is about how to figure out yours... and what to look out for when you hear people preaching about their own! There's also acknowledgment that your neurodivergent body and brain may process things in different ways, so the following questions may not be that useful for you.Figuring out your core self-care need or needs (just a jumping-off point!): Thinking back to times in your life when things felt the easiest, what was your life like? Which of your needs were being met fairly well? When life has been a bit easier or better, did you notice any particular ups and downs based on particular needs being met? For example, if you were overall feeling pretty good compared to your baseline, was there anything that particularly threw you off? Or something that could bring you back to that feeling better pretty quickly?Tuning into your body right now, is there anything your body is asking for? This won't necessarily be a core need, it's more a check-in to see what messages your body is already good at giving you.Thinking about the past few days, weeks, or months, are there any messages your body has been consistently giving you? For example, when you've felt tired, does it feel more like you need sleep, or more like you need food, or more like you need to be around another person to recharge? Again, this isn't a perfect metric, just noticing how your body talks to you.Is there any form of self-care that feels like it REALLY fixes a bad day?Resources mentioned: Takedown of Why We Sleep: https://guzey.com/books/why-we-sleep/Commentary on the above post: https://statmodeling.stat.columbia.edu/2019/11/18/is-matthew-walkers-why-we-sleep-riddled-with-scientific-and-factual-errors/Transcript DocAnd one more link someone sent taking down the book Why We Sleep (I haven't listened to this episode but the links alone look great): https://open.spotify.com/episode/4r0Vawq8xAfnsnKbYVUNhc?si=n7t-koeuS2GXQ2QnA8j4dQAuDHD Flourishing resources:Transcript Doc Mattia's NewsletterLike Your Brain community space (Patreon/Discord)Repost of ep 11, originally published Aug 18 2023 Hosted on Acast. Today's podcast begins with our memorable host, Mike Slater, chattering about the SAVE Act before asking the audience an important question that liberals seem to hate: Do you actually know where your American birth certificate is?Following that opener, Slater gabs with Breitbart's Economics Editor, John Carney, about the current financial health of this great nation under Trump 2.0. It's a somber and reflective show on today's Breitbart News Daily. Our pensive host, Mike Slater, compares the music and culture of the United States of America in the 1940s to today's slop. How did we fall from such great heights?Following that opener, Slater speaks with the former host of the show, Breitbart Editor-in-Chief Alex Marlow, about the news of the day in a way that only the two of them can! In this episode of Outlaw God, Dr. Steven Paulson and Caleb Keith examine Christian views of suffering and critiques the common idea that God sends hardship to create or strengthen faith. Drawing on Luther's reading of the Psalms and 2 Corinthians 3, they argue that faith comes first and suffering follows because faith is attacked, not produced, by affliction. They trace how mystical and modern evangelical traditions interpret suffering as a path to humility, conversion, and even divine compassion, including the notion that God must suffer to understand humanity. The discussion concludes by previewing Luther's break from these ideas and a clearer theology of the cross to be explored next time.
